Bro, this gotta be top 10 Salvadorean spots in the Bay Area. The ambiance is what really captivated me: I felt back in Central America. Once you take your seat in this small, humble establishment, you are given a menu and your order is taken I went with the Pupusas: here, you can get them w Flour Tortilla, or Rice Tortillas of your choice. I'll say, the rice tortillas aren't for everyone, as some describe it as bland. I went with both types, with one of them w shrimp. What a meal! Online, it can be shown as RINCONCITO CATRACHO, but it's the Salvadoran spot COME TRY IT OUT

Service was amazing. The woman who helped me was super sweet. A small but intimate place with amazing food. I was in San Mateo for the day for work and so glad I went here for my lunch! I got the bean and cheese pupusas :)

a cup of coffee and a plate of food

Sweet people working here & the chicken cheese pupusas are very tasty. I m glad I was craving pupusas. I have a favorite pupusa place in San Mateo now. I have tried many but this is my favorite. Was a bit dirty cause of food and drink spills but it's ok.

Pupusas...top one is chicken and cheese. The bottom is pork, beans and cheese.

For some reason, I was craving pupusas and found this place through yelp. Frankly, I'm not sure why I decided to try this place since it only had four reviews. It must have been the location and the very convincing (and spot on) reviews. Before I had a chance to study the menu that was hanging on the wall, a woman walked out from behind the counter/kitchen. She asked if I wanted the English menu. I didn't think I needed it, so I declined the offer. She said to let her know if I had any questions. I finally decided on one pork and one chicken pupusa. She asked if I wanted beans and cheese in it. I guess I had a confused look on my face because said I could have whatever I wanted inside. I opted for one chicken with cheese and the other pork with beans and cheese. Apparently, everything was made to order. There was another lady in the kitchen flattening and stuffing my pupusas. The pupusas were amazing. The outside was crisp and the inside was soft. I especially liked the chicken with cheese. Definitely recommend.

Down home, stick to your ribs, locals mainly, kinda divey restaurant. Besides having your standard Mexican menu, they have cuisine from Honduras and El Salvador. Honduran yuca con chicharon - $12 - There was some real nice chunks of pork that were both juicy and crunchy from being pressed on the griddle. The deep fried yuca it was served atop of is a gut bomb. (http://www.yelp.com/biz_photos/el-rinconcito-catracho-san-mateo?select=1yoND3HgfU9e7LtdtHXS_Q#1yoND3HgfU9e7LtdtHXS_Q) Hondureno taco - Reminded me of a a chicken taquito or a rolled taco from Socal. Bailada ($5.5) - flour tortilla with beans, rice, and sour cream. Tastes like the bean burrito from Taco Bell but wayyyy better. Opt for the egg. So good. Montada pupusa. Basically a revuelta pupusa that's topped with an over easy egg and topped with a salsa fresco. (http://www.yelp.com/biz_photos/el-rinconcito-catracho-san-mateo?select=W8oZi803pWRoCzBMzKZDPg#W8oZi803pWRoCzBMzKZDPg) Washed everything down with a jamaica drink. It's not really divey but the interior matches the exterior. The authenticity of this place is the standout. The prices are reasonable enough that I wouldn't mind coming back to explore more of their menu. Worth walking the extra steps from downtown 3rd if you're into unique eats.

It's a food truck parked on the street near the corner of the shopping center nearby. Parking was pretty easy on the street or in the nearby shopping center. Don't expect an area to eat or tables unless you're gonna walk down to the shopping center or take it to go as most people do. The staff was very friendly and full of smiles, and I was able to order with my broken Spanish. Food: I wanted to try a variety of pupusas so got the Revueltas, spinach with cheese, and lorocco with cheese. All were very tasty and I would love to try the rest of the menu as well. My favorite by far is the pupusa Revueltas. This is as close to authentic Salvadoran you can get until you try the local cheeses in El Salvador.

I ordered 4, all different, plus 3 pastor tacos. After I placed the order, he told me it would be about 15 minutes, great sign since it meant they would be freshly made. Far better than most places around here that I've tried.

The beef birria tacos are SO good like the flavor, the birria consomme, the sauce, the meat. Everything just hits right. This is a legit hole-in-the-wall kitchen, and that's exactly what makes it special. No frills, just really good food that keeps you coming back. Every time I'm craving birria (which is often), this is where I go. The quality stays consistent every single visit, which is huge. You know exactly what you're getting and it never disappoints. For the price and taste, the value is excellent. You're getting authentic, flavorful birria without paying sit-down restaurant prices. Summary: Flavorful, but HEAVY…read more Details: They just opened up a new branch in SF, but we wanted an excuse to hit up San Mateo, and Latin American is always a good enough excuse. While photos of their SF location suggest some seeing, this OG location is pretty much pickup/delivery only: a fairly literal hole in the wall, located along a random quiet street. Most folks would probably opt to take home or eat at one of the "nearby" parks, but we've gotten in the habit of just eating in the car, which... not so great for something as messy as birria lol. I'll say that for most folks, this would probably easily be more a 4 star spot, while for us, it's more a 2 star since we're unlikely to come back. That's not to say the food was bad: on the contrary, the flavors were quite good, and the consomme was less salty than some of the others we've tried. But their food is HEAVY. Not just the birria itself, but also the burrito we got, and heavier than other places we've been for some reason, with the birria sitting in a pool of oil soon after we picked it up. This probably isn't a deterrent for most people though, so take this as you will. Accessibility: Not too relevant since this is really just a pickup spot, with the pickup window being at the usual height you'd find elsewhere.
