Found this spot when my family were going to be in Menlo Park. My kid was craving orange rice so I was glad to find Mama Cocos. Plus there was an outdoor kids area and I was definitely the best mom at that moment when she saw it. It was a nice day to sit outside and my husband and I loved the murals. I saw a video of food recommendations and we had to try the ceviche. It was more like a shrimp cocktail minus the juice. We loved it, especially my toddler. She got some tacos and extra rice. I got the mole enchiladas. The black beans were so tasty. The whole plate was delicious. My husband got a torta with al pastor. It was not what he was expecting but he still ate the whole plate. He'll probably try asada when we come back. Service was great. We were tbe only ones outside but staff still cane regularly to check on us. Definitely a spot to check out with your family. read more

The ambience and beautifully decorated exterior and interior are very inviting. The staff is friendly. The food was lack luster. The red salsa tasted like tomato sauce. There was a kid at the next table that literally said " that does not taste like salsa and I don't like it". There was so air conditioning. I was here a week after my previous visit. Boy, it was disappointing.. Service: 1/5 the young lady at the counter projected a really weird vibe, as if she was there to walk around in a beauty pageant, not to help customers with their orders. She barely responded to questions as if words cost money. Anyways, when I placed my order, instead of trying to understand what I asked for, she charged me for a Jalapeños salsa on the side. I'm someone who can't eat or tolerate very spicy food. So it felt absurd to get charged for a jalapeño salsa that I wouldn't eat. I told them that I was here couple days ago and the guy who was here gave me two salsas on the side(like every other Spanish restaurant), I just want those. And she and another lady told me, anything besides burrito is just us being generous, in a tone, that sounded like we are doing you a favor. I just paid for a burrito, so it felt bizarre. Food: 2/5 the burrito was cooked and the guy in the kitchen kept it at the counter. The way the chef kept it on the internal order counter was also weird, it rolled from one side of the counter to the other. And then it just stayed there for 3-4 mins, even though both ladies were free, they were not attending to other customers. As she was packing, that's when I realized that they were not going to add any salsa but a lot of chips. How was I going to eat those dry chips without any salsa. So absurd. So, I reminded them to give me the same two salsa like a few days ago. This is when they told me about them being generous. And I was taken aback and a bit annoyed by it. They gave me box and when I opened it at home, I realized they had taken out all the complimentary chips that they give out of generosity and gave me one cup of green salsa but no red salsa.. Superb customer service from Nico here, really friendly people, warm and inviting with a colorful festive interior, and stunning wall murals done by a local artist. They have a patio in the back, beautifully decorated and partially covered, the perfect spot for a meal. We got a veggie burrito to go, I specified spinach tortilla with pinto beans and cheese. Not only did it have all of that plus rice and pico de gallo, it also comes stuffed with fresh sautéed vegetable like green zucchini. I stopped by for the first time after work a couple of weeks ago and very much enjoyed the a meal of take out that I brought to share with my mother. I thought the Quesa Birria was delicious and the empanadas were very tasty. My mother said the she enjoyed her enchilada. However, the next day for dinner I had planned on enjoying my left overs. To my very unpleasant surprise while dipping my quesa birria taco and taking a bite, I pulled a very long hair out of my mouth. EXTREMELY disappointing!! I would have given them a 4.25 or 4.5 ish rating; but I just can't get past the hair. I had a really relaxing Friday night out. The vibe of the place is super chill, and you can dress however you like, which makes it even more relaxing. The food was delicious! I especially loved the mango margarita and the enchiladas, they were so good and really filling. The portion size was perfect for the price; it's pretty average for Bay Area prices, not too expensive but not cheap either. The Mexican food was great, and the ambiance was really nice. Met up family here for lunch and it was perfect because my 2 kids were entertained the whole time by the play kitchen they had and also baby toys! Very cool that they have the space to do this in the back patio. The food was good and the service was good. The only odd thing was the michelada came in a glass that wasn't big enough for the whole beer so the mixture isn't right when you add more beer to it after? Not a big thing. Food is great, not the best, but overall good flavors. I've attended 2-3 times because I enjoy the food and is near me, but the service is TERRIBLE ! I wanted to give this place a chance but I've never felt so uncomfortable and unwelcome at a restaurant before and that speaks a lot when you go in and the majority of the time is empty. I'm assuming because the old lady that's there always receives people with an attitude. Not only that but they took 40 min to give us our food and not a soul in the place. The Carne a la Tampiqueña was a variety plate that came with sliced skirt steak grilled with onions/peppers, mole enchiladas, guacamole, refried pinto beans, and red rice. Finally, we had the Huarache (meaning "sandal"), made of a fried oblong masa dough served over black bean puree and topped with cactus salad, cheese, cream, green salsa, and a choice of meat (we had the Cochinita Pibil, or achiote pork shoulder braised in banana leaves). We had a large party of nine for lunch to celebrate a work milestone. Service was a bit slow though very friendly, there was only one server taking care of entire restaurant and helping take out customers. All of our food was delicious! I had the chile relleno with the shrimp and very much enjoyed it. Their black beans and red rice were also very tasty. My co-workers were also raving about the mexican coffee they enjoyed. Parking in downtown Menlo Park (near ECR) is a bit challenging, not their fault of course, but something to note when planning to visit. The decor is very vibrant and welcoming. They also have a very inviting patio in the back that looks like it would be a great place for a work happy hour come summer. read more

Really was not a fan of this place. First, they kept the door open so as a result, the interior had tons of flies and mosquitos that kept flying around our food. Second, the service was not great. It took a long time for anyone to come by to take our order or to take our bill. Third, the food was really disappointing. The guacamole tasted like it came from a grocery stores far too creamy. The bowl for the tostada ensalada was too hard and none of the shrimp were deveined. And agree with other reviews that there was way too much dressing on the salad. Mama coco's is a warm and cozy neighborhood spot. We had a very pleasant waitress and there's a great semi-covered, back patio for enjoying the South Bay weather. Unfortunately the restaurant is really not that clean. The patio table cloths were stained with congealed food. I have seen some critters hanging in the back patio area on previous visits. In general, the space needs a deep scrubbing and upgrade for the worn tables and chairs. I can forgo renovations and perfect cleanliness for really delicious, authentic Mexican food. But Mama Coco's doesn't quite deliver. The guacamole, green salsa and mole are store bought. The chips were borderline stale. That was just what we noticed on our order, so I'm sure other dishes are store bought as well. The food is tasty but not exceedingly fresh or worth the $20+ per dish. Well, the chips were cold with a tablespoon, of green sauce, which was flavorful. After being seated, we were served our drinks quickly and put in our order, than sat and sat ... I grew a nice beard and Her Ladyship's hair, turned a nice salt and pepper color while waiting for our order to arrive. She ordered the epanadas, I went for the beef burrito. My opinion is probably biased because I am Mexican. The chile reńeno was good, they don't seem to deep fry it, which is fine ( healthy) it still tasted good. However the rice tasted a bit weird to me, like if they had made it from canned tomatoes. I didn't really like that. The means were good. Other than the rice I enjoyed the meal. I also didn't get any tortillas. I am used to eating this meal with tortillas and I was surprised I really didn't need them. I will day this place is like a healthier version of Mexican Food which I love. The place itself it's beautiful. The tables and just the decorations are so cute! Very cozy. We had such shockingly bad service that we left before we even ordered our main dishes. We arrived about 5:30 PM on Sunday. We were the only customers. We had to search to find someone to direct us to seats. We mentioned that the table we chose was unsteady - the waitress told us she would do something about it. I ordered guacamole (slightly below average) which the waitress brought promptly but without any napkins or tableware. And the table was still wobbling! At that point I was already dissatisfied with the service. My wife got up to get napkins. When she returned she told me that the waitress told her she was too busy with other orders to get us napkins even though she was doing something with her phone. That was it! I put down $15 for the quacamole and walked out. I see that other reviewers were happy with the service but that was clearly not our experience. The place is very nice and looks clean but there are a few things that to me are red flags: The place was smoky as we walked in and stayed that way for the entire time we were there (45-50 min.). The service was so slow, even when we were the only customers inside. The food took about 20 min to arrive and the host took forever to come back after delivering the food.
