The nitro cold brew in a can is over priced and not actually nitro, I won't buy that again. The cortado was excellent. It has a reasonable amount of seating and is quiet enough for studying, work, or a meeting. This is a local chain so check out the other locations as well. While waiting for family to arrive on a day outing in Annapolis, the Tall Man and I searched for a good coffee shop in the area and Ceremony just kept coming up. This location is their main one, west of downtown Annapolis, with their roasting facilities in the back and a small but rustic-cool cafe area in the front. Definitely a very hipster vibe here, but the image is backed up by quality beans and drink. I was impressed by the inventiveness of their coffee drinks, serving up the basic espresso drinks along with several types of pourovers and coffee "cocktails" (no alcohol, but with a flavor punch regardless). Although I typically go for a latte or a chai, I was enticed by these specialty drinks and got the Lady Baltimore, the prettiest almond milk-based drink with floating meringues and a surprising citrus punch. The Tall Man thoroughly enjoyed his pourover, and the rest of the fam raved about the Springtime Mule and chai latte. Overall, this was a winning find in Annapolis. It's rather on the more expensive side for sure, even for third wave coffee shops, and there aren't a ton of seats for crouching over a laptop. But next time I'm in the area, Ceremony would still be on my list for sure. read more

Minimalist space and divine coffee, oh man, oh man...I am excited!! Or maybe it's the caffeine kicking in. This place is quite reminiscent of my favorite coffee nooks in Central California. The selections are limited to retain the integrity of their best product--coffee. The space is beautiful, in its own industrial/minimalist kind of way. I liken the experience to going to an authentic Edo sushi place in Japan... Just let the chef give you the best of the best, the way it's intended to be served. Don't come here expecting to order a tepid latte with almond milk, four pumps of caramel, and light foam. You go to Starbucks for that. Highly, highly recommend Ceremony! Caffe Pronto roasts the best quality coffee in Annapolis. By far. Coming from Seattle, this is in fact the only coffee shop that lives up to my high standards of coffee quality in the greater Nap-town area. The head roaster just won the 2011 Brewers Cup! Holy Cra*!!! So I guess it's officially the best. One of my only complaints about the roaster is it's location. It's far from the historic city center, and impossible to reach without a car. I like walking places. The neighborhood is a mix of light industrial and car dealerships, and the coffee shop is actually hidden a block off West, the primary avenue, and around an almost invisible corner. Thankfully there are large signs in the shape of arrows pointing people in the right direction. I actually drove past it twice using my iphone for directions before I looked up and saw the signs. What I'd like to see is a bit more of is seating somehow... there are basically three small tables and four barstools. In the mornings this place has a line, and nowhere to go! How about some outside seating perhaps? Keep in mind, this is some of the highest quality coffee in the region, if not the nation, if not the world? Ok that's an exaggeration. Definitely the only coffee shop in Annapolis with good coffee. Other than the other Caffe Pronto location. read more

What a little hidden gem. They roast their coffees here and it's amazing!!! They may not be service oriented but I have never had a bad experience. They are serious about coffee though. They also offer some pastries if you're hungry. They have some nice seating areas and when the weather is good the front door (a garage style door) is open. Limited selection and what they do have is often stale. Same as the Riva Road location. Bottom Line: The best coffee I've ever had and its worth the wait. Admittedly, I am not a huge coffee drinker but I do enjoy a few cups a week and I enjoy trying good, locally roasted, coffee. I also like gourmet things that are off the beaten path so Ceremony Coffee Roasters gets a check mark there too. The industrial and minimal interior is charming and I like that the beans are roasted just a few feet away. Of course the real draw at Ceremony is the coffee. Even though I usually add milk and cream to my coffee, at Ceremony, the coffee is so good that its practically a sin to add much of anything to it. A cup of joe at Ceremony does require a little bit of patience because of the methods they use. For starters, they grind the beans to the proper particle size and then weigh them to ensure perfect proportions. Next, they heat filtered water to the accurate temperature, around 200 degrees Fahrenheit. Finally, the grinds are placed in a filter and the hot water is slowly poured over grinds. Perfect coffee slowly drips into a cup of deliciousness. As you can imagine, this process takes some time and if there are a herd of people in front of you, then extra patience will be required. But, if you enjoy coffee, and your taste buds sings for really good coffee, its totally worth the time and $5 price tag. Pass on the Mermaid and support this local business that is as special as a peaberry itself and is growing like coffee bushes in the subtropics! Ceremony now has four locations, including two in Annapolis. (The newest edition is in Festival at Riva.) My dear Coffee Snobs, After going through a bag of their beans last year, I have been searching for the same level of complexity and fruity notes in every cup of Ethiopian since to no avail. I finally got a chance to get out to Annapolis for a day and found the perfectly tucked away roaster in the middle of what feels like nowhere. All the beans for purchase were roasted within 3-4 days, which I really appreciate. There is a nicely curated selection of coffee brewing contraptions available to add to your own collection (two Aeropresses are better than one--don't be selfish). If you want a snack, there is Mast chocolate and almond butter toast available to complement your pour-over. This is my favorite coffee. I am a home barista, and I only use their beans as they have the best flavor. They used to be Pronto, but changed their name. I love the Mass Appeal (formerly Sweet Cheeks) and Decaf House Blend (formerly Anns Blend). The have a cafe on location where they sell drinks, but it is small and no frills. The drinks are great but there isn't much there if you want ambiance or food, etc. But, if you are looking to get the best freshly roasted beans in the metro DC area, and I have checked them all out in both DC, Baltimore, and the Maryland metro area, then this is the place to get them. read more

Everyone there know what they are talking about when it comes to coffee and tea... they roast their coffee and they even have a lab in the back where i am sure they held classes for people who are interested. The must try is the Nitro-Cold-Brew... it came out of a tap (like the beer tap) and when you taste it, it's so smooth, frothy, and not bitter... I don't know some of the coffee chain because of their bitterness, but here, i don't even need to put sugar in my cold brew or my latte... it's that yummy the price is a little "high" $4 for Latte, $5 for cold brew and hot chocolate... but you get what you pay for... As a committed localvore, I really want to love this place. Truth, though? They don't earn that love. First, the good. The coffee is delicious, the parking is never full, and the place, while tiny, is cute and there always seems to be at least one seating choice open. Now, the problems. There are no prices on the pre-packaged snacks, which are way over-priced and not so good. The staff is, as mentioned in other reviews, kinda snobby, but I was also add snobby about *weird* stuff. Like today I went by on my way back to work to grab an Americano and a couple of snacks and the dude who made my Americano held it out toward me like he was handing it to me, but when I lifted my hand to take it from him, he basically scoffed when he said he'd just put it down because it was hot. Huh?! Of course it's hot, and you have a sleeve on it, and if you weren't trying to hand it to me why did you hold it out like you were handing it to me? Weird. My two pre-packaged snacks and Americano cost me almost $17... and they're just not very tasty. The nuts are over-roasted and super dry and the protein bar is gooey and gross, no better than old school protein bars that have been improved upon immensely by other companies in recent years. I have choked down two small bites so far and am not sure I can stomach another. I may on rare occasion go by and get a coffee beverage from Ceremony, but I will be scoffing at their snacks like the baristas scoff at the customers, and will likely grab my coffee elsewhere, as well. I simply ordered online and ordered the Antithesis and the De-caf. Honestly, I didn't care for either. The Antithesis is marked as a dark roast and imo, it definitely wasn't a dark roast. To me it had little body, little flavor and a touch bitter. I will express though, they were very professional and gave me brewing suggestions , which based on my experience in following them, didn't make a difference. They were very nice. One disappointment though, ( I understand they have a no return policy) they didn't even suggest sending a different blend to try and they wouldn't honor a partial refund. I get it. I'm not faulting them, I'm not being critical, I simply didn't enjoy their coffee. read more

In the Annapolis area, this is the top shop easily. Then there is another shop down the street in a strip mall and it also sells Ceremony Coffee. However, if you want awesome coffee you usually go to the roaster! The shop is small. There are about 4 very small tables for two people each, one larger table for four people. There might be outside seating but I wasn't paying attention because it was pouring rain when I visited. There is plenty of parking in a private lot and along the street. Many people stopped by on bikes while I was there, even in spite of the rain. The barista was incredibly friendly and got me a fresh roasted bag. The roaster wasn't operating when I was there. The shop is really large since it also houses the roasting facility and a training center lab. I actually didn't bother to look at the menu, but do note that they had about four varieties of pour overs and two of espresso. I got a latte to go (which i really dislike doing because I am not into paper cup taste) but I note that they have plenty of for-here mugs. In addition to having a variety of coffee beans for purchase, the shop also has plenty of swag. There are glasses, mugs, shirts, prep items, etc. They have everything you would want to make coffee. For me, I think Ceremony expresso could have a better blend, but it's a high end, nice roastery and my taste is not the be-all end-all taste for espresso. If you are a coffee tourist or in the area, this is a worthy stop over. read more

I called Ceremony before driving 5 hours about fixing my espresso machine. "Yes we can do that. Yes we fix Rancilio Miss Silvia machines." I confirmed their hours and explained that I was real happy they could do it because no one in my town could. I happily drove the long drive to drop it off. When I arrived, they wouldn't take it because the espresso repairman wasn't working today. They just refused to help. I get that everyone needs a day off, but they knew how far I was driving, and that I was driving over the same day I placed the call. First..the coffee is undeniably amazing. Truly it is. A WORD OF CAUTION...stop reading if negative reviews bother you. But it's not the coffee that has warranted my negative review. It's the....uh....well it's the staff. A few words I would use to describe them would be: effete, dismissive, haughty, pretentious, snobbish and at times, downright rude. Every time I go in there I feel like I'm being judged. For example I asked for a latte with no foam and was told that was a flat white. Ok then, I said, give me that. The cup was very small so I asked for a larger one and they looked at me like I just threw up on the Mona Lisa! Then, horror of all horrors, I asked if they could add a Splenda to the coffee as it brews. If only you could have seen the look on his face. Again...judgement. Then I went to pay and was told I couldn't use my Cafe Pronto gift card. WTF?! I said, "aren't you the same company?" The clerk responded "yes, but you still can't use it." No, "I'm sorry for the inconvenience....we're switching registers". I mean I don't know but say SOMETHING instead of looking at the customer like they are the dumbest person you've ever met. I don't think I can adequately state how truly offensive the staff is. And here's the thing...,they ALL ARE LIKE THAT, I mean is it company policy?! I've talked to others and they feel the same way. So the question is: is the coffee that good that it overshadows the rude staff? Some days, yes. Stupid Ceremony Coffee Roasters. They turned me into a coffee snob. I was perfectly content with my free Mr. Coffee and $5 bag of Archer Farms. But never ever again will I have coffee that way. Their coffee is fresh roasted (as in within the week, not within the year), fresh ground, and fresh brewed. I love that it's not roasted dark at all. They actually develop the flavor of a coffee bean, not char(bucks) it out. Here's the best part, the thing that turned me into the geek I am today: free coffee cupping. They do this every other Friday. It's usually headed up by either the head roaster, Andy, or Ronnie, who I believe does some roasting too. Honestly, I have no idea what he does. He's just sort of there. Knows his stuff though, that's for sure. He also brewed me an espresso once, which was excellent. Anyway, cupping. It is the process of smelling, tasting, and analyzing a coffee to determine its flavor characteristics. Yes, each coffee has its own "personality", if you will. I'd heard a lot about Ceremony and had a chance to stop by on Saturday. What an odd location, but wow, what a cappuccino! I savored every drop. Bought some whole bean espresso and I'll also give that a whirl at home. From everything I've read, these folks take coffee very seriously and have show up in several listings for top coffee in the country. I'm a bit sad that Lamill left Baltimore but now that I've found Counter Culture at Atwaters / Patingo and Ceremony coffee at Ceremony (closed Sundays) and Caffe Pronto I've got my backups. Only thing is a) I'm sure there is a reason but they could surely use a better location and the staff weren't unfriendly but sure were not friendly. I love coffee and I like to talk with experts - but it was clear there would be no talky talky. They weren't busy at all so that wasn't an excuse. Hope this was an anomaly. read more

Came in for a afternoon cup of joe and some quiet time to work. Although it wasn't very quiet, the coffee and ambience was great! The entire space is well light with lots of seating and tables to work on. If you want to work on a paper, you might need headphones to drown out the surrounding noise but otherwise you could complete a lot of work like I did. I could see myself coming with some friends to grab some breakfast and have a little chat, it's got room and space for that. Go around the corner for better parking than on the street which can be hard to get out of once you're in the spot. The coffee is very good but it is very highly priced. It will likely serve as more of a coffee splurge for most rather than your regular coffee stop. You won't avoid the stereotypical coffee snobs here either. The baristas were helpful in answering some questions I had visiting for the first time but upon a return trip I was not so lucky. The service was rather curt and aloof. Aside from the service their product was tasty and they offer several varieties of coffee each day which alternate. You can even watch their roasters at work through a window in the front of the store to see the process. I would still recommend trying the place out but don't expect a super friendly welcome and be ready to pay for the top shelf beans. read more
