I love a good sandwich and this place does not disappoint…read more The hubby and I had lunch here the other day (takeout). I got the PhD on their homemade bun. It's the only vegetarian sandwich on the menu. It's topped with avocado, tomato, gouda, roasted red pepper, lettuce and maple balsamic mayo. It was good, but I wish there was one more veg sandwich option. The bun was also just alright. Next time I will try getting it in a wrap. The hubs tried a more adventurous sandwich. Him being a meat eater, he got the "Sean Evans" which was topped with fried chicken in hot sauce, chips, caramelized onions, dill mayo, and chili pepper cream cheese. I must say, I was kinda jealous. We also split a slaw. It was good, but nothing to write home about. They are also known for their cookie dough, which I will have to try next time. The sandwiches were good, but again, I wish there were more veg options (besides salads).

I went to Lunchbox recently and got one of their "lunchboxes" for dinner, lol. I thought it was…read moreok, but a little pricey for what it was. I think it might have been what I ordered. I will go back for a sandwich instead next time. So I had the "Schrute" Salad $8.65, and I added grilled chicken to it for an additional $2.50. I made it a "lunchbox" for an additional $3.25, which gave me a snack, cookie dough and a can of pop. So my whole meal was $16.25. The "Schrute" Salad was baby arugula, pickled beets, raisins, candied pecans and goat cheese. The added chicken was sliced real chicken breast. I got a balsamic dressing on the side. The ingredients were fresh and the portion of chicken was good. I just felt that this was a salad I could have put together myself in my kitchen very easily. When I eat out, I like to have something that I can't make myself easily. The salad was good, but I didn't feel that it was anything special. I chose the Creamy Dill Potato Salad. I usually don't like potato salad, but given all the reviews raved about it, I tried it. I have to say, I did like it very much. I loved that it had bacon in it. Everything tastes better with bacon! There was also cheese. It was creamy, but not overly so and tasted garlicky and dilly, haha. The portion looks huge in my picture, but it is not that large. The container is a larger Solo container, so it's a little bit bigger than the container that my salad dressing was in. For my cookie dough, I chose the "Sharon, Lois and Graham" which was cookie dough with lime cream cheese, shredded coconut and graham cracker crumbs. It was pretty good. It tasted like raw cookie dough and key lime pie. The cookie dough comes in a standard Solo container (you know, the size container that you get soy sauce in when you get sushi takeout - well, when they don't give you packets of soy sauce that is. It's the same size container that my salad dressing came in). I really love the whole "school theme" of the place. The menu is called the "Course Syllabus." Menu items have names like "Substitute Teacher," "Class Clown" and "P.A. Day." On their webpage you can click on "Report Card" and provide feedback. I think this is all very fun and creative. Lunchbox is where Bun Republic used to be. It's a really small space. There are a few tables to sit at and eat, but it's mostly a takeout place. The place is super cute. There's free parking in the back. I feel this place is really cool. I was just not really wowed by my salad. I will try a sandwich next time (which seems to be the more popular choice anyway) and write an update then.

The Long Version: District Deli opened up around March 2025 in the space that was Bismallah Pies (was Charlie's Groceteria before that). My husband and I dropped by to pick up a sandwich to share. The sandwiches are all named after nearby streets, which really gives it that neighbourhood feel. All meat sandwiches are $13.99 and vegetarian sandwiches are $12.49. You can also build your own for $13.99 where you can choose 2 meats, one cheese, and whatever vegetables you like. We went with the build your own option. We got roast beef and prosciutto cotto, fresh mozzarella and lettuce, tomatoes, cucumbers, pickled onions, pickled eggplants, and roasted red peppers, with a bit of honey mustard. The sandwich was really good. The bread was fresh, as were the other ingredients. It was a bit pricey in my opinion, but this is in comparison to other similar sandwich shops with $8-10 sandwiches (like 50 Two Sandwiches or Shorty's Sandwiches), but they are in industrial parts of town, so I get it, rent in Hintonburg is higher. District Deli only has cold sandwiches. No hot sandwiches, at least not at the time of the writing of this review. Service was courteous and efficient. Street parking only. Review #118 (2025)

I visited recently with my friend and we both ordered a specialty iced drink. I ordered the Iced Shake Toffee Nut with Cold Foam. This drink has a strong coffee flavour and you can truly taste the toffee nut. I like that it's super refreshing and it's perfect for the summer days. My friend ordered the Ice Biscoff Latte with Whipped Cream. If you are a biscoff fan, this is a must-order. They use biscoff to blend into the latte and they even place a full biscoff cookie on top of the whipped cream. It balances the sweetness of the drink and the coffee flavour at the same time. We also ordered the Smoked Salmon Toast which has a garlicky cream cheese, cucumber, smoked salmon, fresh dill, avocado, capers, radish and a slice of lime. This is a hefty gourmet toast and I love how fresh all the ingredients are. Make sure to squeeze the slice of lime before having it, and it really adds some sourness to the whole dish. I am a huge fan of capers, so this added some tanginess! All the employees are really kind-hearted and will come around often to check in on their customers. They gave good suggestions on both food and drinks. I really like the whole atmosphere of this restaurant. A must-visit if you haven't already!

I would say on the milder side of medium. The chicken was a lean chicken breast that was battered and deep-fried. The cabbage added a nice crunch to the sandwich. I felt the pickles were a bit too thickly sliced, but I still enjoyed them. There was too much mayo for my tastes. I should have asked them to go easy on the mayo. The bun was fresh. I appreciated that it was plain and had no pesky seeds. The sandwich was fairly large. The fries were crispy and very tasty. I like that they were fresh cut fries and not from frozen. My friend got the Southwest Chicken Salad, which comes with avocado. However, she doesn't like avocados and asked me if I did. Oh I love avocados! So she asked to have the avocado on the side and kindly gave it to me. It was half an avocado, sliced, and served in a ramekin. It was perfectly ripe and not blemished at all. Service was attentive but not intrusive. My friend and I hadn't seen each other for a long time so we had a lot of catching up to do and our server definitely gave us the time and space. He was also knowledgeable about the menu, which I appreciated, since I had a few questions. We ate on the patio. The patio overlooks the parking lot, but the lot is not busy, so the ambiance is not bad. They have a few tables under umbrellas if you prefer shade and some without umbrellas if you prefer sun. Lots of free parking in the plaza parking lot.

I've been coming to Canada every year for longer than I can remember, and it's always a necessity…read morethat I stop here for what is likely the best sandwich you can get anywhere in the country. Di Rienzo's is a small deli tucked away in Ottawa's little Italy neighborhood but trust me it's no secret. There's always a line of the well informed, salivating with a grin as they wait (not long mind you, they move fast). The smell here is your first clue that your in for somethings delicious, if you weren't hungry when you arrived you will be once the aroma hits your nostrils. They have a selection of Italian pre-packaged products and various snacks, as well as cold drinks to complete your meal. That said, this joint is all about the sandwiches. They'll make whatever combo of meats, cheese, and toppings you want but if your unsure just pick one of the options on the board. I almost always get the #14. It's all the delicious Italian meats you could want plus havarti, lettuce, and mayo (exchange the regular havarti for the herbed havarti if you'd like). The bread is amazing quality as well. You really can't go wrong here. They have some sandwiches in a case ready to go as well, such as the steak which I hear is amazing. The staff here couldn't be more friendly and accommodating which is no small feat for a place this busy. There are no tables so it's takeout only and It IS cash only however they have an ATM for the unprepared. Oh, lest I forget, this amazing and quality sandwich is less than 10 bucks! This spot is a real gem and if you find yourself nearby you absolutely have to try it out.
