3 piece fried chicken combo $12.49.
    Jennifer P.

So I had Mary Brown's for the first time today, despite going past a Mary Brown's on Dufferin Street in Toronto all the time in my youth on the way to Yorkdale Shopping Centre. In those days (before social media) I never heard any advertising for Mary Brown's and there was no hype. It was also the only Mary Brown's location I ever saw. I didn't know that it was a chain from Newfoundland. And for whatever reason, I was never compelled to try it. Now in 2019, fried chicken is big again and here in Ottawa there was a lot of noise about Mary Brown's coming to Ottawa (returning to Ottawa? Rumour has it there was a Mary Brown's here once upon a time but then it closed? It was in Barrhaven? I don't know. Can anyone confirm?), so obviously I had to check it out! This location out by the Coliseum movie theatre opened at the beginning of March 2019 (the one at the Kanata Centrum opened January 2019). I was expecting a lineup since I heard the Kanata one has huge lineups, but at 6:45pm on a Wednesday it was super quiet. I was served right away. I got the 3 piece fried chicken combo for my husband. It came with taters (potato wedges), a small coleslaw and a can of pop for $12.49. I got a Chicken Pop-ins (popcorn chicken) combo for myself. It came with taters and a can of pop for $9.79. I loved the Chicken Pop-ins. They were mostly meat with just a bit of batter/breading. And it was all lean breast meat too! I'm a fan. I got the Maple Chili dipping sauce and I really liked it. It was a bit sweet and a bit spicy. I wasn't a huge fan of the taters. Some pieces were ok, but some I found were really mealy/starchy/powdery tasting (the bigger and thicker wedges). I had some of the fried chicken and it was good. The skin was crispy and yes it was oily/greasy, but not dripping with fat in a gross way. The seasoning on the fried chicken, Chicken Pop-ins and taters seem to be all the same to me. The seasoning was a bit on the bland side in terms of flavour, but there was adequate salt, just the flavour profile was blah IMO. The dipping sauces definitely helped, especially the Maple Chili since it gave a spicy kick. Service was friendly and quick. The restaurant is new and looks very clean. There are not that many seats to eat in, but everyone who came in while I was there was getting takeout. There's lots of free parking in the complex. I got a link to a feedback survey on my receipt. I did the survey and got a code. So if I bring back my receipt with the code written on it within 60 days, I get 15% off my next purchase. I guess I'll have to come back to try either the Buffalo Chicken Tenders or the Thai Chicken Pop-ins - twist my arm! Lol ;)

    My first Big Mary!

We were heading over to the Coliseum to see a movie and needed a meal before our movie, and honestly I had never heard of Mary Brown's before...I was pleasantly surprised! I ordered the Big Mary Chicken Burger, and upgraded my taters to a poutine. The burger was a little disappointing at first, definitely smaller than expected, but the taste of the chicken made up for it. I chose the spicy mayo which worked well, and the chicken was moist and flavorful. I would place it right up there with my usual favorite - Wendy's Spicy Chicken Sandwich. The poutine, for choosing the small, was huge and tasted great. Gravy had a good taste without being too salty, and the taters had a coating on them that was pretty yummy. The meal was a little pricey, $10.50 plus the $3 poutine upgrade, but I would mind coming back every now and then. Overall, very good experience when I had no intention to go there in the first place :)

All of their locations at the…read moretime of this review are in the Greater Montreal Area except for this one, which is in Ottawa. So I'm usually super jealous of all my friends who still live in my hometown, Toronto, because Toronto almost always gets new chains before we do here in Ottawa. But this time I get to say "Na na na na boo boo! We got Mont Tacos before you!" Lol. This location opened up on October 2020. So Mont Tacos sells what they call "French Tacos" but I would describe them as "flattened burritos." They have some pre-set ones or you can build your own. I built my own. I got 2 small combos, which comes with fries, a dipping sauce, and a fountain drink ($8.99 each combo). If you just get a small sandwich it's $5.99. They have medium, large and X-large too, to suit your appetite. For the base price you get 1 meat and 1 sauce choice. You can add more toppings (meat, cheese, or vegetables) for more money ($1-2 per topping). I didn't add any additional toppings. I got 1 with "marinated chicken" and Samurai sauce and 1 with "chicken cutlet" and Algerian sauce. So they put fries inside the "taco" and they also add their signature cheese sauce. I found the "tacos" a little too wet and saucy for my tastes, but I still enjoyed it. My husband and I shared the "tacos" so I was able to eat half of each. The "marinaded chicken" has a curry flavour to it, which I enjoy, but if you don't like curry, you might want to stick with the regular "chicken cutlet." I was very pleased that both types of chicken were real chicken breast pieces and not some fake chicken loaf like you get at Subway Sandwiches or other places. The fries were shoestring fries, which was my favourite. They weren't that crispy by the time I got home (got takeout), but they were still delicious. The Algerian sauce is a bit sweet and a tiny bit spicy. I really liked it. The Samurai sauce is also spicy, but was less multidimensional than the Algerian sauce. Both were good. Service was friendly and efficient. The food here is Halal. This restaurant is where Central Bergham used to be and truth be told, Mont Tacos reminds me of Central Bergham a lot. Central Bergham also has creamy dipping sauces for their fries and they also had Algerian sauce and they kind of tasted the same. I don't know what I conclude from these observations. Hey whatever, I'm a fan of both places! I just wished that they would include 1 free vegetable topping with your order. I feel like the price can really creep up if you add lots of vegetables to it. The restaurant is in a strip mall, there is some free parking in the mall parking lot, but the lot is small and difficult to maneuver around when it's full. There's some free street parking if you don't mind walking a little bit.

Uber eats is trundling in too; I've seen about 2-3 of those. I'm gaining weight just from the smell!! I am giving this place a 5-star just based on the smell!! But I reserve the right to change my mind after eating. I love the decor! That wall with the jelly bean houses on it! Ok, by now maybe you know that Mary Browns is a chain our of Newfoundland, so I had to try this at least once. I never ever eat breaded and friend chicken; honestly, KFC is good enough! What can I say? I was hungry!! But I love Newfoundland, and I want to know how this compares!! Also to note: there was a lot of staff behind the counter, so things seemed to move fairly quickly. Oh and I saved something for next time: they have introduced banana pudding!! Sorry for the drool marks on this review... Two meal deals included drinks and coleslaw for, $28.00. I will update my review after I taste all this for the first time. My stomach is sincerely grumbling!! UPDATE: oh man, was this ever good! The chicken was juicy and tender, the coating was perfect! The fries were wedgies and already coated and flavoured, so we didn't add salt or ketchup. The coleslaw was so good that all they needed to do was give bigger portions! Delish!! Definitely deserves a 5-star!! Will return. Also fixed the spelling. Predictive text, my keister!
