    Checking out MaryBrowns

I had heard a lot about Mary Browns Chicken from friends and family in Atlantic Canada and Ontario. Well we decided to check out Mary Browns in Ottawa. The staff was really friendly and helpful in answering our questions. I order the Chicken sandwich combo with fried potato wedges with side order of fried pickles and coleslaw. Let me not forget the side of sauces that accompanied the meal. The chicken sandwich was tender crispy and juicy . I added some amazing coleslaw , Mary brown sauce and buffalo sauce to the sandwich. It was fantastic . The fried pickles were soft and greasy.. The potato wedges were ok - they could have been cooked a little longer to have that great crisp- the killer was they were very salty. I would say that Mary Brown's chicken sandwich is much better than Popeyes chicken because the chicken was thick, tender, crisp and juicy. The coleslaw added to the chicken sandwich pushed it to a new level. We will be back but next time I would request that the potato wedges be crispy and with no salt. The fried pickles be crispy. One final note that price is a few dollars higher then Popeyes and McDonalds but the quality of the chicken is well worth it.

Heard some people from the maritime raving about Mary Brown's, how it's even better than Chick-fil-a, so we decided to give this a try. Tried both classic Big Mary sandwich and also Buffalo Mary. They both tasted fine but in my opinion nowhere near as good as Chick-fil-a. Saw a promo on the wall that Big Mary is $3.99 on Monday's so that would be more worthwhile (regular $6.99). The venue was clean and staff was friendly.

Love the spicy Mary with the spicy mayo. Decent sized portions. Taters are also pretty great. Definitely worth a try.

Overall, the food was ok, but had too strong of a charcoal smell and taste for me. I ordered a half chicken meal with jollof rice and plantains ($20.99). The wait was about 30 minutes. They serve the food in styrofoam takeout containers (never my preference for both health and environmental reasons). The food was so hot, it melted and deformed the bottom of the container. Hope I didn't ingest too many carcinogens as a result o_O I got spicy for the chicken. It had some kick to it, but wasn't all that spicy. It smelled and tasted strongly of charcoal. Too much so for my liking. However, it was tender and juicy, not dry at all. The rice was spicier than the chicken, which I liked. However, I've had lots of jollof rice and this version had a spice in it that I had not tasted before in jollof rice and I didn't like it. It also had lots of huge dried bay leaves in it that I had to pick out. The plantains were great though. Soft and sweet with a nice caramelization to them. Staff were courteous. The restaurant is in a strip mall with lots of free parking.

Admittedly this was my first time trying African cuisine but definitely an experience I have been looking forward to for a long time. We really loved the flavours and cooking of the meats. Excellent charcoal aroma, great seasoning and a skilled cooking of the chicken which had juicy chicken breast and tender dark meat. The goat wasn't too gamey or tough but has the signature bite on the bone pieces. I was expecting it to come super spicy but it was fine and came with a spicy sauce on the side that's addictive! It was my first time having jollof rice so I don't have a frame of reference but I found it to be tasty. The food was just a bit greasy but the flavours were worth it.

It was tasty, slightly juicy and very crispy. The sauces were a bit sweet. As mentioned below, Table 85 made the best fried chicken in their old location. The spicy seafood noodle was good but not great. It is a huge portion and more than enough for one person. Could be shared if you are not huge eaters. I hesitated between 3 and 4 stars. They were only cubed daikon radish as a free side. A far cry from the appies that normally accompany Korean food. They also don't sell rice which I also found unusual for a Korean restaurant. I guess it more of a fried chicken fast food joint.

I had been wanting to try The Fry ever since they first opened up in Toronto, but hadn't gotten…read morearound to it. Then they opened a location on Elgin St and for some reason or other, I still hadn't gone. Then they opened this location in Barrhaven, and I thought "hmm, free and plentiful parking, in a shopping plaza, and close to our friends' house, there is no excuse not to go!" So my husband and I went there last night with our friends who live near the restaurant. The Fry's specialty is Korean fried chicken. My husband and I shared the standard "half & half" ($28.99), which was a whole chicken, half of it plain fried chicken and the other half fried chicken in sauce. Our friends (another couple) got the "special half & half" ($29.99), which is also a whole chicken except you get to choose how you want the halves (choices are plain fried chicken, fried chicken in sauce, fried chicken in spicy sauce and soy garlic chicken). They got plain fried chicken and soy garlic chicken. They also got a basket of sweet potato fries ($7.49). Like all Korean restaurants, they start you off with some banchan (free appetizers). We got a skillet of sizzling corn, and some pickled daikon radish and pasta salad. We got 1 plate of each for the 4 of us. You can look at the pictures I posted, but I felt the daikon radish and pasta salad portion was pretty stingy. There were literally 6 pieces of rotini in the pasta salad for the 4 of us to share (!). I didn't have any corn, but those who did said it was ok. Just corn in some butter and heated up. The pickled daikon radish was good. It wasn't too strong in flavour. The pasta salad was pretty much rotini with some diced red and green bell peppers in a mayo-based sauce. It was good. Now on to the main attraction: the fried chicken! So I specifically told our server that I cannot eat sesame seeds, so please tell the kitchen not to sprinkle sesame seeds on my order of friend chicken with sauce. Well, guess what? It was the last basket to arrive and came covered in sesame seeds. So I reminded the server of my request and she said "oh yeah, sorry" and took it away. So luckily I was able to eat the other half which was just plain fried chicken. My husband and I were almost finished the plain fried chicken before they brought out the re-made sauced one. Now in our situation it was fine because we were going to share anyway, but had I been waiting for the sauced chicken, everyone else would have practically finished their meal before I would have gotten mine. The server did apologize again when she brought the new one out. The plain fried chicken was good. It wasn't too salty and the batter was just right. However, I really liked the sauced one. The sauce was garlicky and slight sweet. The pieces are cut up into small pieces, smaller than you would get at other fried chicken places like Kentucky Fried Chicken, Popeye's or Church's. The chicken also comes piping hot, so be careful you don't burn yourself! Service was good in that they were polite and nice, and they checked up on us occasionally and brought us extra napkins when they saw things were getting a little messy, lol. They also give you a water jug for the table and they refilled it when it was running low without us having to ask. When it came time to pay the bill, I noticed that they did not compensate us for their sesame seed screw up. Now my expectations for such matters are pretty low, like maybe a free dessert, or 10% off the item they made the error on, or even 5% off your next visit, just any small gesture to take responsibility for the mistake. So I was a bit disappointed in the way they handled the situation. At least the server apologized. Decor is pretty casual. There are 3 TVs that play sports and one TV that plays Korean pop music videos. The place is brand spanking new as they just opened up March 4, 2017. It's where the Corny Dog used to be (and before that Spuds). Overall, the chicken was good, but I found the sauce not as flavourful as Bonchon Chicken (in the USA) or Table 85 (the hidden gem here in Ottawa). Oh and they are still waiting for their liquor license as of the writing of this review. Also, if you are trying to eat healthily, you are out of luck at The Fry. I mean with a name like The Fry, what do you expect? The majority of the menu items are deep-fried. There are no salads or vegetable dishes (with the exception of buttered corn, and I guess french fries and sweet potato fries - but these are by no means healthy choices even if they are technically vegetables).

We took the really creamy mac'n cheese and the rice and beans as sides. The mac was a bit runny but very satisfying and the rice was added on top of the cooked beans. The chicken sandwiches and biscuits were hot and fresh. It's a very thick piece of yummy white breast, with a clean crunchy breading. Not overly spicy and thankfully less sauce than other places. Compared to Mary Brown's there is less seasoning but it is thicker and crunchier. $5.99 is a good deal these days. The biscuits were excellent and made a nice side for only 99 cents each. I would avoid the Mac and Cheese - it was very soupy, little noodles or cheese. Ripoff for $2.29 even if they would have filled the pathetically small container.

I've eaten at Freshii before in other parts of the city, so I knew what to expect. What was a surprise was how affordable their offerings are compared to other salad bowl restaurants in the area. The wings are fresh and never frozen, halal and made to order with a crap load of house made sauces. The onion rings are made in house from scratch. The order: 20 wings with onion rings - instead of the 3 sauce offer, I asked for 4 sauces and while they said it was and extra $2, they didn't end up charging me extra. That was not necessary but nice. The good: I ordered for pick up and when I went t to get the order, they had it ready for me. The place was really clean and the staff is pleasant and very helpful. I got the spicy mayo, Parmesan, hot honey and honey garlic. They were all really good and I certainly don't have any complaints - from a personal perspective, I just wouldn't get the spicy mayo. That's kinda silly. The bad: I would have really preferred if they had a Parmesan garlic instead of just parm - kinda boring ya know. Still decent though when dipped into franks red hot! Also, I would really have preferred if they actually had a Buffalo sauce - they don't and a quick taste of their hot, don't really scream Buffalo. Look, do your fancy wings but you gotta respect the Buffalo - it's just what is expected! Make a fancy buffalo sauce like Primal Kitchens but you still gotta have a Buffalo! Overall, quite happy with the quality of the wings - they were not overly fatty and the meat was perfectly cooked without any burnt or dry spots. The skin had a good snap to it (I went with classic cos breaded ain't my thing...) Will go back again to see what the fries are all about. Total bill $33.99 plus tax = &38.41
