    German Doner Kebab
    Heather M.

Having lived in Germany for 3 years, my husband and I fell in love with the doner kebab food trucks there. We are always on the hunt for that authentic taste. While this isn't exactly like those doners (the difference is in the bread), these were as close as we've found! We ordered a sample of everything...German Doner, Doner Quesadilla, Doner Spring rolls, Doner Poutine, and Flaming Fries! I had the regular German Doner and my husband got the "go large." The amount of meat on the regular is extremely generous, the "go large" was almost too large. When you order online you can easily select what you do and do not want on the sandwich or any extras. It's very customizable. Hands down my favorite item was the spring rolls. They were amazing with a little jalapeño in it to give a bit of kick. So good! They disappeared before I could even take a picture. Flaming Fries - The "flaming" spice was barely there. I didn't find them too spicy but I love spice. They were very good paired with any of the sauces (but garlic was my fav). Doner Quesadilla- When I think of quesadillas I think cheesy goodness. Well the cheese is barely there with these. This was the only item that we tried that we wouldn't order again. I'd get an extra order of those amazing spring rolls instead!

The fam and I decided on German Doner Kebab for our weekly(sometimes twice a week, not gunna lie) pandemic takeout day. I am a HUGE fan of Wolf Down, which is a no fuss, simplistic doner shop smack dab in the city. They make the best tofu doners, and their in house sauces are AMAZING! Okay...this is not a review for Wolf Down ...You can read my Wolf Down review here if you want: https://www.yelp.ca/biz/wolf-down-ottawa?hrid=Drtw3PBXnnixEMbMx1p0rw&utm_campaign=www_review_share_popup&utm_medium=copy_link&utm_source=(direct) German Doner Kebab is a chain that recently opened in Ottawa. Fellow Elite Yelper, Jennifer P. sums up the history of this chain really well in her review! Go read it! Her reviews are great and so detailed! I've had this place on my list for a while. I was kind of bummed when the only vegetarian doner protein option was a veggie patty, but I gave it the benefit of the doubt. Guys....it's not very good. The pictures online made it look like this fried up goodness filled with vegetables cut up in cubes. My doner was filled with a mushy black bean burger. Unless you love black bean burgers, I feel vegetarians are getting the short end of the stick here. I wish they thought of something more innovative. The bread was OK, and did the trick holding all the toppings in. There was no yummy chew factor with the bread though. Toppings included lettuce, purple cabbage and onions. I did pay for a side of pickles for an extra $1.00 and honestly it wasn't worth it. I received about 5 small pickles in a small container (the containers they put their sauce in). I did appreciate that the sauces were served on the side so that the doner did not become soggy. Their sauces were OK, but in my opinion lacked flavour. The hubby had the chicken doner and he thought it was really good. He also had the doner spring rolls and he thought they were fantastic. I also ordered a side of fries which I thought were really good. Their chili bites were amazing as well. They were super cheesy and spicy. I may be back down the road, but I won't be rushing back for that veggie doner.

This is super great unique crispy shell with great Halal donate meat inside and a crunchy salad with a delicious sauce. The waiting time is the only draw back.. but the packaging is so nicely done.. they come with a funky fork , wet towel and variety of dipping sauces. Fries is crunch and great too. We also tried their chicken quesadillas for the kids it was great! If ur on Keto diet they also have Doner bowl.. salad topped with the meat! Lots of varieties around doner !

Gourmet kebabs done right! First time having a German kebab and now any other kebab just seems basic to me. The meat is perfectly cut, juicy and succulent with the freshest ingredients. You have to eat the meal with their 3 signature sauces to give it that final touch. Their hand made doner kebab bread is unlike anything I've ever tasted. The entire experience is unique and something you should definitely try, don't be shy ;)

It was offering a BOGO deal on Korean beef corndogs. It was exactly what I needed! I placed an order for two beef corndogs with garlic sugar. I also got a Diet Coke. My timing was perfect. I placed the order in my car that was parked at RCGT Park. My order would be ready by the time I got to Seoul Dog. What was a pleasant, perhaps shocking, surprise was heading downtown just past 8 pm and finding out that Seoul Dog has a parking lot. Free parking. What?! I felt like it was either a mistake or I had won a mini jackpot. I pulled into a spot and walked in. I got to the counter and indicated that I had an Uber Eats order. The nice woman handed me a paper bag with my items in it. I thanked her and happily left with my order. I headed back to my hotel room and chowed down. On Uber Eats, the corndog was going for $9. It's kind of pricy considering that Chun Chung offers fancy rice dogs at $7 tops. I will admit that the ones at Seoul Dog are a bit longer, so perhaps that makes paying $9 a dog a bit easier to take. I got my corndogs plain. As much as I dig ramen chip and potato cubes, I wanted something simple. I got both corndogs sprinkled with garlic sugar. I didn't know what it meant. Luckily, there isn't any sugar. It looks more like powdered sugar, but it's all garlic. As a garlic lover, it was the perfect garlicky level of yumminess. The beef hot dog in each one was plump and juicy. I liked that the batter was crispy on the outside, which a mild chewiness that was enjoyable. The cold Diet Coke washed everything down so nicely. It hit the spot. It was wonderful trying out a local Korean corndog joint and having a couple of corndogs for dinner. It made up for the small hot dog that I had at the ballpark. I'm thinking that the ballpark should offer corndogs from Seoul Dog. It's easy to eat them on sticks. (258)

Long before ChungChun Rice Dog infiltrated the Kogo market, lol. They started out on Clarence St and then moved to Lyon St and now are on O'Connor St. I really enjoyed their beef corndog. I got it with the regular dough, but you can get it with spicy jalapeno dough too (for an additional $1). I also got it plain, but you can get it topped with potatoes pieces or ramen chips (again for an additional $1). I got the garlic sugar sprinkle and spicy ketchup and mustard sauces. The beef corndog is regularly $9 but UberEats was having a BOGO deal, although the price is $10 on UberEats so I paid $10 for 2. The beef hotdog was juicy, and the batter was crispy on the outside and had a pleasant slight chewiness on the inside. It wasn't too thick. Admittedly, garlic sugar sounded weird to me as a sprinkle on top, but it oddly works and tastes good. It's super garlicky though, you have been warned. They gave us 1 tiny packet of mustard and a tiny Solo cup of spicy ketchup for both corndogs (see picture). The spicy ketchup was tasty and not too spicy. I dumped the container into the box and dipped the corndog in it because there's no way the corndog would fit into the tiny cup. I also opened the packet of mustard and squirted the contents into the box for dipping. So while I thought it was tasty and reasonable with the BOGO deal, I personally think the regular price is too high for what it is. The regular beef corndog is only $4.99 at ChungChun. Yes, ChungChun is a chain, and I always root for the underdog, but twice the price is too much for me. Seoul Dog does have the option of Jalapeno dough, which ChungChun does not have. Their current location is great because it has free parking, which is very rare for a restaurant downtown. They also have both indoor and outdoor seating and a lot of both. I picked up my UberEats order and the pickup was smooth. I got there early so just hung out outside until the app told me it was ready. I entered as soon as the app alerted me it was ready and they were just packing it up. No complaints with pickup. I'm glad I got to try the OG in Ottawa kogo, lol (still need to try the OG in Montreal kogo at Picks on Saint Marc, which was years before it's time, but I digress). They also sell Korean donuts at Seoul Dog. Not exactly sure what these are, but I'm interested to try them, especially since they have an apple flavoured one.

Salang Kabob House has been on my list of places to try for some time now, so I was thrilled when I saw that they had a BOGO (buy one get one free) special on UberEats. It was $19.99 BOGO for a Mixed Shami Platter. So this is what I got. Each platter came with a ground chicken kabob, a ground beef kabob, rice, salad and naan. It was a lot of food and a great deal. I enjoyed the chicken shami, but I found the beef shami a bit gamey. The kabobs had a good flavour to them. The rice was soft and fluffy and nicely seasoned, but a little bit oily for my tastes. The salad was iceberg lettuce, cucumbers, tomatoes and red onions. Vegetables were fresh and crisp. The salad came with a spicy red sauce, which I liked, and a creamy dressing, which I didn't use. The naan was tasty and I appreciated that it didn't have pesky sesame seeds sprinkled on it like some other places. I ordered for pickup and the food was ready in about 15-20 minutes. Pickup was quick and efficient. The restaurant has lots of seating inside. There's free parking available in front of the restaurant. The parking is shared with neighbouring businesses. (102)

Rounding up from 3.5 stars…read more I got the Sultani Platter, with came with one tikka and one shami kabob, rice, salad, and naan. I chose chicken tikka and beef shami. I also upgraded to qabulli rice instead of just regular, and Salang salad instead of regular. I wanted to try the Qabulli rice because it's Afghanistan's national dish. It had the addition of julienned carrots and sultana raisins, and I believe it typically has sliced almonds as well, but this one didn't. The Salang salad had the addition of feta and kalamata olives, along with the iceberg and romaine Lettuce, cucumber, tomato, red onion, and pickled pepper. The platter had some weight to it! The salad came with both ranch and Greek dressing. They were fine, though I wish there was some other house dressing. The chunks of feta were great, softer than I expected and less dense, less salty. All in all, the salad wasn't anything special, but I did appreciate the fresh component to the dish. I'm not usually a fan of chicken breast, but the chicken was very moist and flavourful. Beef shami is always a safe bet for me. This one was a little more done/drier and saltier than I would've liked, but still good and the flavour was there. Both had the grill flavour that I enjoy. The tomato chutney that came with it was nice. It was almost like a fresh salsa but not chunky, and with a little spicy kick to it. The kabuli pulao (though they spell it "qabulli" rice) was tasty. They were very generous with the raisins and I wasn't big on the sweetness. The carrots were cooked and tasted a bit sweet to me also, but not sure if it was just the raisins cooked with them. Maybe the almonds would've helped cut the sweetness. I really liked the basmati rice itself, which was flavoured. It was great to try the qabulli rice, but I think I'll get the regular rice next time. The plain naan was good, nice a fresh, crispier on the outside and doughier on the inside. If you've never had Afghan naan before, it's not the same as Indian naan. Indian naan is thinner, flakier, and larger, whereas Afghan naan is thicker, denser. I do wish I had something to dip it in or had it buttered or something, but it's great bread and I had already filled up on the rice, so I actually split it and saved the other half to use in a sandwich later. My husband got the beef shami platter, which came with two shamis, and an upgrade to garlic naan. I tried some of the naan, and while good, I found salty. Maybe they used garlic salt? I also got the ayran/doogh to drink and the firnee for dessert. Doogh is like a salted yogurt drink that I've only tried maybe once in the past, so I thought I'd try it again. It was okay, but I couldn't finish the whole bottle. The firnee was homemade and very tasty. Not at all as sweet as I expected, and I loved how creamy/milky it was, and the crushed cardamom and finely chopped pistachios on top. It was perfect. Will definitely order from here again.

Five Stars -- The Best Philly Cheesesteak I've Ever Had…read more I just had the best Philly cheesesteak of my life. I don't say that lightly. From the first bite to the last, it was absolute perfection. The steak was unbelievably tender, sliced thin and piled high, cooked just right so every bite was juicy and full of flavour. The cheese? Melted perfectly into every bite, rich and smooth. And the bun... warm, soft, with just the right hint of crispness. It held everything together like a proper cheesesteak should. And here's the part that shocked me: it was better than any cheesesteak I've ever had in Philadelphia -- and I've had plenty. This one sets a whole new benchmark. Every ingredient tasted fresh, every flavour balanced. No shortcuts. No filler. Just pure, delicious craftsmanship. It's the kind of sandwich that makes you stop mid-bite and appreciate what's happening. I can't remember the last time I enjoyed something this much. If you think you've had a great Philly cheesesteak before, think again -- this one is on another level. I'll be back. Now let's talk about the Onion Rings I got as a side! Simply perfection. Nice and crispy in a very tasty batter. Best in Ottawa, by far! I will definitely be back!

My husband and I came here recently for an early dinner…read more We each had the 2 piece broast chicken combo ($7). Each combo includes fries, coleslaw, garlic sauce and a can of pop (although we never got any garlic sauce, but they gave us 9 packets of ketchup (yipee!), since I love ketchup and garlic sauce is usually fattening anyway, I was happy with just the ketchup). The wait is long because they make everything to order. It was about a 20-25 minute wait. The chicken is crispy on the outside and juicy on the inside with a nice hint of flavour. I feel that the chicken is slightly better here than at Zaki's Broast. Broasted chicken is supposed to be less greasy and oily than fried chicken, but I still found it oily. The best broasted chicken I've ever had was at La Hoyo in Halifax which is now closed :( I'm still looking for chicken like that... The fries here are much better than at Zaki's in my opinion. The fries at Laziz are hand cut and lightly seasoned. The coleslaw here is also amazing. It's the creamy type which I usually don't like but I liked Laziz's coleslaw. The dressing is slightly sweet and they use purple and green cabbage, so it looks really colourful. There's a nice crunch to the coleslaw too. The older man who works here is very nice, but the younger guy was really indifferent towards us. The place is clean enough, as are the washrooms. There's sufficient seating and lots of free parking. It's in the same strip mall as the Mark's, Sushi Kan, and Eclipse Asian Cuisine.
