Tahini's - Jamaican Jerk Shawarma. A crowd favorite!

We were short on chicken but, There was a generous portion of Gyro. They didn't have the platters box anymore. I Think it affected the quantity, for veggies and meat we got a few slice of tomatoes (we where only two) so each of us got 3 slices (that are already cut in half) The chicken was shredded into really small pieces and dry. For the sauce I think one was yogurt, two different lvl of hot sauce, tahini sauce and one sweet sauce. We have lots of rice left and lots of salad I was the only one who had some. I think overall it is still a good value but if you have a small appetite.

TLDR: Tasty chicken shawarma bowl in suburban plaza. Excellent $8 daily specials…read more So I finally made it out to Tahini's! They are a chain from London, ON. This is their first location in Ottawa (it's technically in Kanata, lol). I was going to try their famous blueberry chicken shawarma but was seduced by their $8 daily specials, haha. On Sundays, their regular-sized Habibi bowls are only $8 (usually $12.99) and y'all know I can't resist a deal, so that's what I got. I figured since I was saving $5, I might as well add 2 beef samosas (for $2.99) for kicks and still be ahead, lol. The Habibi Bowl is rice, chicken shawarma, fried onions, tzatziki, spicy garlic sauce, parsley and pita chips. I like that they fry up the chicken on the grill after they slice it off the spit. The chicken was moist and flavourful. The rice was a bit clumpy, but still tasty. They were super generous with the fried onions and pita chips. Lots of crunchy texture for sure in this bowl! They were also generous with the sauces. The beef samosas were mostly wrapper, not too much beef and onion filling, but they were crispy and piping hot from the fryer. They are more similar to African-style samosas/sambusas as opposed to Indian-style samosas. They're also pretty small. Service was courteous and efficient. I like that the takeout containers are cardboard and not styrofoam. It's a fast food joint. Some tables are available to eat in. Atmosphere is very casual. Lots of free parking in the plaza parking lot. (41)

Maybe a 3.5 star if only I could give half-stars. For the overall experience. We have had Papa…read moreSam's before, but it's been a while, and we are now comparing current pizza competition in the 'hood, for price, quality, service, and to see how well they stand behind their advertising. That last point for this experience really bites! Down one full star for this experience!! We were drawn to Papa's because of local advertising, so I called. At the end of placing my order, the man who answered said, "in Kanata"... nope! We completely blanked on that - I didn't even notice the ad specifically stated Kanata, when we wanted the Stittsville location. I hadn't fully realized they had 2 locations until then! The bad experience was with the Stittsville location; they charged about $5 more for the same pizza, saying "all the prices have gone up!" Yay for you, not so much for me!! But for now, supporting local, you got me once. So this pizza was $31, taxes in. Almost double the Milano's special!! Yikes! On the upside, they did allow me to change one item at no extra (I don't like green peppers), and they threw in 2 cans of pop at no charge. Great! As for the pizza itself, we got what papa's calls XL, but to us this is the same size as Large at Milano's, so it's bigger than Domino's, and also had more of everything on it than Domino's. Papa's considers chicken to be a premium topping, so they charge more for it (we didn't get it today). I might add that Chicken is included at Milano's. So how good was the pizza? The bottom line it was ok, but not stellar. I've been looking for pizza crust that is light and airy and full of bubble-pockets, instead of too thick. That's not what we got here. However, it wasn't too thin or too thick. The pizza was covered with ingredients (waaay better than Domino's!) On the downside, I didn't love the pepperoni on it; I like it more like salami that's not too hard and chewy. This is sort of like bologna... and just about as exciting :-( Lastly, the service: ummm... leaves a bit to be desired. First of all, they don't respect advertised specials at both locations, which is really unfortunate. That will affect future purchases at Papa's either location. Secondly, the Stittsville location is in like an old house, and the sidewalks are not well shovelled. I walked past an open door that wasn't the entrance, to hear loud (Lebanese?) music blaring!! When I did get in to pick up my pie, the music was gratefully turned down, and the pie was ready. However, the fellow serving started in on the personal questions: "Do you know what your name means? Heaven!" And "I love your hair!" Geez, I love the compliments, but did not expect them!!

I loved the fact that I could order all of the things I want in one platter! I got a mixed shawarma…read moreplate with chicken and beef, potatoes, fattoush salad, tomatoes, onions, pickles, turnips, garlic sauce, hummus, and pita bread. It said the sesame sauce was best with beef and the sweet sauce was best with chicken, so naturally I got both. There were two small pitas in a bag and the garlic sauce and hummus came in small containers on the side. I opened the container with everything else and while it was packed to the brim, I was disappointed to find a big portion of rice, which I did not select as part of my order. I had also hoped for those crispy pita chips in the fattoush that I was craving, but unfortunately there were none. There were limited tomatoes, pickles, turnips (chunks not strips), and onions, so I would order extra if you normally eat a lot of them. It was hard to get down to the salad, toppings, and potatoes underneath the meat, but it wasn't a bad problem to have. The chicken was good, but I found it a bit drier and I preferred the beef, especially with the sesame sauce. Next time, I won't get the sweet sauce, but only because I ended up not being in the mood for the sweet taste after all. I didn't ask for extra garlic on top of the meat and potatoes like my husband did on his, but I should have. There wasn't nearly enough for everything and it wasn't very strong, so I scraped up every little bit of the garlic I did have in the small container. The portion was very large, the price was affordable, and prep/delivery was quick. I might try a sandwich the next time, with extra garlic, of course!

TL;DR/The Short Version: Cute little place in Stittsville…read moreselling tasty soups and sandwiches. The Long Version: I had lunch at Wiches Cauldron recently and it was great. I got the Chicken Sandwich ($15.95). It was sliced real chicken breast meat, mozzarella cheese, mixed greens, cucumbers, picked onions and fig jam. It usually comes with mayo, but I asked them to omit it. All sandwiches come with a mini 4 oz soup. I chose the curried carrot and squash soup. The sandwich was delicious. The bread they use is a Kaiser and it's from Carp Bakery. It was soft and very fresh. I loved that the meat was real chicken and not deli meat. The fig jam was tasty and gave the sandwich a nice sweet taste. The soup was a bit watery, but was full of flavour. It had a strong curry flavour and the coconut milk in it made it a bit creamy. I enjoyed it. Funny story: I ordered the chicken sandwich. They ask your name for the order. The lady who ordered after me also got the chicken sandwich but she asked for no cheese. The cashier announced to the kitchen "no cheese on the chicken sandwich" and the kitchen asked "which order? Jennifer's?" And the cashier said "no, the next one, I haven't punched it in yet." Lol. I chimed in "I love cheese, I definitely want cheese on my sandwich!" The man in the kitchen said "alright, extra cheese for Jennifer!" And the lady after me said "yeah, you can have my cheese." Haha. So I got two slices of cheese in my sandwich. Score! Lol. Everyone working there was super nice and friendly. It's a small place, so the cash and the kitchen are right next to each other. I took my order to go, but there's seating to dine in. I noticed they have a small amount of branded merchandise, like baseball caps. There is free parking in their private parking lot at the back of the restaurant. Fun facts: The Wiches Cauldron started off as a food truck in the early/mid 2010s. Some time in the early 2020s they moved into their present location which was Red Gables Creperie before (it was also briefly Red Gables Ramen before they rebranded and started selling crepes instead of ramen).
