This southern gem actually caught me by surprise, because it was so neatly tucked in the block. The minimal advertisement for such a beautiful establishment really spoke to my sense judgement, because I quickly thought the owners(or culture of the restaurant) would be soaked in humility. And I was right. Central had some of the best dinning service I have ever experienced while visiting Montgomery. The service was so keen that the host observed me picking out sausage in my dish and came over to inquire if everything was ok and if I wanted to send the dish back with the necessary adjustments. I had the shrimp pasta which was pretty pretty good, but the catch of the day (Maui Maui) was amazing. I also ordered the fried green tomatoes as a starter, which was dressed with a pimento cheese sauce that I couldn't keep my hands off of. The meal and starter portions were definitely a good size, I had to request a take home box. Wait, I almost I forgot the deserts. They're all hand made and from the description on the menu you'll love every single one. Personally, I couldn't decide... so I randomly let my finger land on one, and I ended up ordering the Banana Nut Bread. Great choice, and a good portion size as well(I took that home too). The decor was pretty dope, it reminded me of a NYC restaurant. There was plenty of space so you didn't have to worry about bumping shoulders with anybody. Central has an open view kitchen so you can see the chefs prepare your scrumptious meal as you patiently wait. Celebrated anniversary on a week night at Central. I had taken some roses that afternoon to be on our table when we arrived. We were greeted at the door, and throughout the evening, with many "happy anniversary" smiles and comments. The food and service was wonderful. Our evening started with a complimentary glass of excellent Proseco. Ribeye steak was cooked to perfection. Wife's shrimp and grits dish was delicious and creamy. Appetizer, salad and dessert all rated 4.5 stars too. Fully met my expectations for a great date night with my bride of 31 years. read more

After several days of mediocre food on the road we were thrilled to find Central. We had an appetizer of pork jowls on cornbread with the pepper relish that was outstanding. My husband have the duck- best he has ever had. We also have the ginger mule drink icy cold and refreshing very nice. The atmosphere is lively and classy. Passing through Montgomery we decided to stop here for dinner and some drinks. The food was amazing! A bit on the pricy side and a limited menu but was full of items you wouldn't normally find. I was visiting Montgomery, and certainly did not expect one of my best meals in recent memory to be in Alabama! I started with the Southern Mule cocktail which is a concoction of bourbon, ginger and lime and was simply blown away! This was followed by the New York Strip Steak and Frites which was once again, simply superb. The steak was flavorful and succulent, and the sauce it came was perfect - tasty and did not overwhelm the steak. I usually like to dip my fries in mayo, but with a couple of bites of these seasoned frites I knew that would only ruin the experience and they were delicious just on their own. I rounded off with the chocolate buttermilk cake which was great but I would have probably preferred the cake to be a bit warm rather than served at room temperature. Note that the place is busy - even on a Wednesday night it was absolutely packed. In spite of this, the staff were still attentive and very friendly. A fantastic meal overall and I can't recommend this place enough! read more

I've been here a number of times before, but today was not the normal offering. The sevice was very good as usual. However, the food didn't meet my expectations. The flavors were on the spot, but you can't serve rabbit with bones in it. Four bites had bone pieces in them, completely distracting from the dish. When you're paying this price for food this shouldn't happen. I told the server, but not confident it made it to management or the kitchen. I saw no reduction on the check...not what I would expect for a restaurant that projects itself at this level. read more

Great food, super nice staff. It was a little expensive but I went for my birthday so I didn't mind spending. Management gave me a complimentary dessert which was nice of them. Very good downtown restaurant, my favorite in the Alley area. Excellent fish dishes, and some good appetizers (wontons are quite good). Ambience is dark and modern, but you can go casual. I only wish there was more energy: place has only been half full or less when I've gone. read more

I want to say...I was very, very thrilled with my 1st visit here. I had some business in Montgomery and made a day trip down to the Capital for meetings and my local colleague selected this place. The inside of the restaurant is very high end and classy looking...and part of a string of nice places connected together by "the Alley" which is a entertainment district where drinks can be taken outside and around. All looked good, but this place really was amazing and reasonably priced. My fish tacos were out of this world. Great taste, sized portion and exceptional rice and beans. My colleague had a club sandwhich that was HUGE and he said great. And service was stellar. And if going where the power brokers go is your thing...then this is it too, as I saw both the Lt. Gov and also the Atty. General -- in different lunch groups there while we were there. So can't get much better for Alabama shot callers for power lunch! Probably my favorite place in Montgomery. Had previously had the pork shank, which was really delicious, along with the pimento cheese plate starter. The atmosphere was wonderful after following a very short wait to be seated. This time around I had the catch of the day which was the lightly fried tilefish placed upon a bed of popcorn grits with Brussel sprouts on the side. The fish was cooked perfect and if you have never had tilefish, it's very similar to Chilean sea bass, so don't pass up the opportunity. However, the Brussel sprouts were a bit salty and the overall price was a little steep which kept it from getting 5 stars. read more

Decided to give Cental yet another try. What a disasterous decision on my part. Was there on 9/3/16 and granted football was about the only thing going on...but surely you should have been able to have gotten a decent meal with only about a quarter of the restaurant filled. Appetizers were poorly prepared and lacking any kind of flavor or creativity and the entrees were even worse. When the chef was observed just standing around with his hands stuffed in his pockets, that should have been an omen. The only bright spot was the server who managed to smile through it all. So goes baseball, so goes Central...three strikes and you're out. read more

Amazing food! I was traveling through Montgomery and chose Central based on the Yelp reviews. I called to ask if they were dog-friendly and responded they could sit us at a patio table. I must confess I did not have very high expectations for fine dining and was very pleasantly surprised. The decor is very cool, the outside area fun and funky where you can also see other bars and restaurants. I love food especially when it is accompanied by great service. Tonight I experienced a mixture of both. I ordered a wedge salad, (great, a bit too much dressing) the shrimp and grits ( the blandest grits ever, shrimp bland, presentation was lacking) the Scottish salmon (omg the best salmon I have had in a long time) Brussels sprouts ( they were really good) pecan pie (very good, would have enjoyed it more had it been warm) and mango custard ( the graham crackers had no crisp to them, the custard was very good, the soft graham was the big downfall). Now in regards to my drinks and the bartender. Where the buffalo roam was my first drink. I have enjoyed it several times and it was good as always. My second drink was an Amarena Breeze which stated it contained Amarena cherries and syrup well there were no actual cherries. When I inquired the bartender told me there was supposed time muddled cherries and perhaps the girl made it improperly. He made the drink over pouring cherry juice not once did I see a muddler. I knew he probably wasn't the man to trust when he told me my Salmon was prepared in the brick oven, when I asked him if it was grilled or pan seared. IT WAS GRILLED. After three visits I will come again. When charging a little more than average I expect my service to be a little better than average. Great food, prime pricing and mediocre service in my opinion for a fair experience. read more

Absolutely love this place. The fish tacos are awesome, the Calamari is the best I've ever had and the Bananas Foster Bread Pudding is to die for. I love the set up of the place, the openness and the old wood beams give it a bit of old Montgomery flair. The service has been great the times I've been, all very friendly and welcoming.
