I recently celebrated my 20 year high school reunion at the Center for the Southern Folklore, and the venue was perfect. There was plenty of room to dance, reconnect with old friends, chill at the table or bar or sample foods from the buffet. The decor is very Memphis and very funky. Lots of cool photos blown up and hung on the walls contrasting with the colorful atmosphere. The shop is also folksy and cute, stocking items reflective of Memphis or the southern way of life. Pick up some CDs of local musicians that have played the Center, or grab a souvenir to take home to Mom.

Great place with great food, music, art and people. We happened to walk by as we had just left our hotel to walk around and explore the city and as a fan if the arts, I decided to walk in to check it out. They gave us plenty of tips on where to go and what to do to. They also host music nights there with local musicians and serve food and drinks. That was an amazing experience!

As Porko already stated, all we did here was listen to some jazz, and nom on peach cobbler, but the cobbler was ex-cell-ent.

Driving from Oklahoma City to Maryland sounds absolutely insane (because it kind of is), so when we…read morefound ourselves passing through Memphis around lunchtime, I turned to my trusted Yelp experts to help us find a local gem. Sunrise Memphis did not disappoint. We stopped in around 12:30 p.m. on a Wednesday and didn't experience any crowds or much of a lunch rush. That being said, after eating here, I completely understand why people mention waiting hours on weekends. The ordering process is simple: walk up to the counter, place your order, grab a number, and seat yourself. I appreciated that they offer both breakfast and lunch all day because it meant we didn't have to choose between the two. I ordered the chicken tenders with tater tots and an Arnold Palmer. Everything was fresh, hot, and exactly the kind of comfort food you crave in the middle of a long road trip. Kyler ordered the Kitchen Sink, which came with eggs, bacon, hash browns, grits, and a biscuit. He asked if he could swap the cheesy grits and biscuit for biscuits and gravy, and they ended up bringing him everything anyway! It was a massive meal, but absolutely delicious. Beyond the food, the staff was incredibly friendly and welcoming. I also loved the fun, eclectic atmosphere. The colorful Memphis touches throughout the restaurant gave it so much personality, and there was even a bar area that made me think this would be an absolute blast for brunch with friends. Sunrise Memphis ended up being one of our favorite surprises of the entire drive. If you're passing through town, do yourself a favor and stop here.

A step inside at the same time the counter guy hollered back to let the cooks know a graduation was about to begin so "expect to be busy soon" confirmed that fact! You order at the counter and are given a number for your table and your food is delivered with a smile and some casual southern hospitality banter. This place is quirky with its decor but on point with the food. Get the bacon! Always get the bacon! I'm still dreaming about it! Be warned! We were told during busy times, the line stretches around the building for a steady 8hrs at a time! May the timing of your visit ever be in your favor!

Such a unique atmosphere! Chess club that also doubles as a coffee shop!…read more I went in on a Thursday morning and they weren't too busy. I ordered an iced latte to go. The sizes are big! The coffee was very smooth and tasty. Prices are reasonable. They did seem to have some food options but I did not peruse the food menu much. The barista made my drink quickly and kindly. This spot seems like a great place to play chess (or other games for that matter) or to socialize. They do offer alcoholic drinks as well.

We asked the concierge and she suggested two options of coffee shop and chess club. My granddaughter decided on chess club. When you first walked in the door, it's a nice cozy, rustic floor, wooden floor, and nice artifacts everywhere and the tables were amazing cause they were designed for chess players. There were some nice sitting comfort chairs and everything looked very historic like the Memphis area. They had an array of sandwiches and salads and pizza and coffees and desserts with the cookies and the brownies. If you just want to curl up and read a good book and have a snack, this is the best place. The service was fantastic. They were very accommodating and very patient with our incisions with all the fantastic choices they provided. Well, I ordered the delicious chicken sandwich and my granddaughter ordered the Smashburger. She ate that burger so fast I was still working on the lettuce. LOL the food was delicious. She ordered a brownie, and I had a chocolate chip cookie and they tasted homemade. She would barely give me a piece of her brownie to taste. So if you're looking for a very good relaxing, caring, engaging, aesthetically, pleasing, and great customer service. Even if you're not eating and you just wanna play chess or cards or any of the other games or books that they had available. Just come take a break and enjoy. I will be back when I'm in Memphis again.
