Hadn't been here in many, many years and was starving by the time we were driving through El Centro. Arrived within 30 minutes of them trying to close and felt a little bad about that. They washed the floors and cleaned the bathrooms around us. The chips and salsa were very good. The Spanish rice was very good. The machaca was delicious. The chicken taco looked good. The beans were just okay. The salad was not great - just a bagged iceberg lettuce mix with cheap ranch dressing on top. Had the Mexican Style Rib Steak and the sauce was super tasty but the texture of the meat was terrible. I forced myself to eat a few bites but it was just weird strands of fat and tasted almost like it had been frozen and then put in the microwave to serve to me. Don't get it! read more

After the drive from San Diego to El Centro, I was famished and looking forward to some out-of-this-world Mexican food...this was the first place we went! My boyfriend is a native El Centro-ian and pretty darn picky when it comes to delicious Mexican food. Celia's did not disappoint! First off, when you sit down you're greeted with homemade tortilla chips and salsa. I can make a meal out of the tortilla chips by themselves...they are so freaking good! Really crisp and light and tasty! But we didn't stop at the chips, oh no there were way too many scrumptious items on the menu to stop there! Like the chili verde burrito with moist slow cooked shredded pork in a succulent sauce with tomatillos and green chilies all wrapped up like a present in a flour tortilla (are you drooling yet?!) or the killer chili rellenos with just enough heat and gooey cheese to make them crave-able... WOW. Thanks to nice lady at the supermarket across the way, we were recommended this lovely restaurant. The staff is really nice and you can tell they are proud to serve their delicious food! Loved the chips and salsa, the chips were amazingly non-greasy, perfectly crisp (not like some chips that threaten to break your teeth!) My friend ordered the Special Quesadilla and it was to die for. Completely home-made everything... soft and pillow-y on the inside, it's a deep fried homemade tortilla stuffed with cheese and served with pieces of meat (high quality). Disappointed to say the least. Chile Colorado was just alright but nothing special. Wife tried the carne asada burrito and said it was the worst burrito she's had. Just tortilla and bland tasting meat...nothing else. Tried the special quesadilla that seems to be favored here and it was greasy and tasted like it should be sold at a county fair. Coffee wasn't even drinkable as it seemed to have been sitting out all day. Chips and salsa were surprisingly excellent though. Overall, I just don't understand the high reviews. Celia's is a middle-of-the-road Mexican restaurant. - Food & drink: the basics are done to a decent, basic standard. Nothing here has wowed us, but even basic Mexican food is pretty good. They serve Mexican Coca-Cola here (made with sugar instead of corn syrup), which our son likes. - Service: everyone is very friendly and helpful. - Atmosphere: pretty poor. Overly-bright inside, like a cafeteria. The last time we were there, the wall-mounted TVs (why do most restaurants around here have so many TVs?) were playing "Cops", so our kids got to watch and listen to a succession of lowlifes assaulting, or getting assaulted by, the police-- an odd choice for a "family" restaurant, and one that doesn't exactly foster a relaxing vibe. - Pricing: we felt most things on the menu were priced a dollar or two too high. We've certainly done worse for Mexican food in the Imperial Valley, but we've done better too. read more

We were looking for a Mexican Restaurant in El Centro, so we looked up Mexican Restaurants on internet and Celia's came up first. So we decided to try it. Upon arrival we were set at a table by Belia who was so friendly, sweet and kind, I knew that we had a winner before we had even ordered. She helped us with the ordering and the food was Awesome as was the service. What all the people in El Centro have, is truley a Special place to eat with some of the best friendly service I have not seen in a long time. We will be back as soon as we can return. I have been visiting Celia's Restaurant every time I visit Imperial Valley. For 15 years their chilaquiles are on point. They wake up your taste buds and make them sizzle. Staff is consistently friendly & attentive. The restaurant is very clean & bathrooms sanitary. Although I visit perhaps every quarter year, I always look forward to coming. The secret of visiting an new restaurant and walking out with a smile is to ask the locals or folks who eat there: what is the specialty of the house? What is the dish they really, really make better than anyone else? Several reviewers mentioned the special quesadilla, hands down. But has anyone tried their rolled chicken taco plate with guacamole on top? Their chicken enchiladas? Their combination burrito? Their huevos rancheros? Their chorizo omelette? Get with the program folks! Few restaurants in town, heck, in the county beat Celia's with those plates! Celia's carne asada burrito is serviceable, but nothing to write home about. Celia's never makes "salsa bandera," THE salsa for dipping. The tomatoey, spicey watery dip Celia's serves with chips is mediocre at best. But, BIG BUT, Celia's guacamole may be the best in the county! The food is always fresh. Celia's rice and beans are head and shoulders above anyone else's. On a personal note, I have to limit my sodium intake and for some reason salt is the biggie in all Mexican restaurants. Celia is no exception. So I have to drink extra water for a day or two. But it is always worth it. By the way, Celia has discovered the secret of serving Mexican food and keeping the heartburn to a minimum, always a plus--which may explain why Celia appeals to all ethnicities. I came to Celia's because of the Yelp reviews. I left wondering what the previous reviewers were thinking. For a Mexican place in El Centro the menu is very limited and Americanized. The decor inside is cheesy, it screams eat and get out, and not very comfortable on top of that, but in the end who cares. It's all about the food, and the food, well... it just isn't good. I had the chilie verde plate, my friend had the chilie colorado plate. We were both disappointed, to say the least. The sauce lacked flavor, and was over salted, and the meat was cooked to the point of blandness. My friend picked at hers and left without eating most of it, while not opting to take the rest as a carry out. If you're looking to be underwhelmed for a high price come to Celia's. There are quite a few taquerias in El Centro that I've had better meals in, I'd suggest one of those instead, if the food is bland you're only out half the price that I payed in Celia's. read more

For 70 years I have longed for the food that my Spanish speaking father used to take the family for in Mexicali . Street vendors and certain restaurants provided un Americanized high quality food during the 1940s. By the mid to late 50s , it had disappeared. I've tried many places in L.A., San Diego and throughout the southwest and Señora to Sinaloa. Imagine my excitement when I found it again at Celias this month. I am a big fan of Dora's, but I think Celia's is my favorite Mexican food in the valley, without driving all the way out to Camacho's. Their chips and salsa are amazing, the chips aren't too greasy like most places. The guac is also good, they don't dilute it. However, the shining star is by far the Special Quesadilla. It is the BEST in the valley. Not too crazy cheesy, just the right amount. For those who don't know what this Imperial Valley dish is, it's a quesadilla that is deep fried into ooey gooey deliciousness. You HAVE to try it, and you HAVE to try it at Celia's. Enjoyed yet another wonderful meal at Celia's last night. We had a party of 8 and they quickly accommodated our group. Noel did a great job of waiting on us and he was on top of things the whole time. The food quickly came out and everyone oohed and ahhed about how good it all was. My Aunt had the grilled fish which was light and flaky and very flavorful. I didn't order my usual sopes (small corn masa base topped with beans and shredded beef) and chile rellenos. Nice restaurant in the Valley, very homie and family oriented. When you walk in to Celia's you can't help but appreciate the atmosphere, it's loud and filled with laughter, it truly feels like home. I went i here based on the reviews and I was not disappointed. Service was super fast and friendly. I got the special quesadilla and a chicken enchilada. Did I say service was fast? My order came to me in less than 5 minutes. I was shocked. So what is the special quesadilla? Its deep fried deliciousness. They use slices of white cheese that more resembles mozzarella rather than a grated cheddar mix you get elsewhere. After that its simply fried. Though I would suggest getting a bit more to eat than just that for dinner. It would make a good app for 2 people. Also, if you put a touch of their salsa on it, it tastes like a calzone. this restaurant's food is a throw back for me because the recipes go back the the restaurants in this area from when I was growing up. Most will say it is not the most authentic Mexican food but it is always very tasty.
