Don't you just love it when a restaurant gets things right? Owners Roberto and Rina ("Reina") Perez have figured out how to prepare and present home cooking in a commercial setting, and, in doing so, have shown that they understand the importance of "home" in that construct. Some of this is no surprise to me. Reina is cousin to Rodnia Attiq (nee Navarro), who, with her mother Rosario Sotelo owned San Diego's El Borrego for almost 25 years, until they closed their business at the end of 2025. Having been welcomed and fed many times with homely care at El Borrego, I'm not surprised that the family connection - and the warmth and hospitality included in it - extends to Cousin Reina. If you're having a bad day, it's worth dropping in for a bite to eat just so you can say "hi" to her. Between the food and the greeting you'll receive, you'll leave feeling better about things. So what to eat? Depending on the time of day and how hungry you are, you'll be pleased with Cazuelitas; Pozole Rojo or the herby Guerrero-style Pozole Verde; hearty Tlacoyos; large Enchilada plates; or probably my favorite Mexican dish, Mixiote de Borrego, which is lamb that's spiced, marinated and slow-steamed until it falls off the bone. I've eated most of those things and seen the rest on my fellow diners' tables. Especially now that El Borrego is gone, if El Centro wasn't a two-hour drive from my house, I'd be a regular, so that I could continue sampling the superb and wide-ranging menu at Antojito Como En Casa. read more

This was my first time visiting this establishment, and unfortunately it was a very disappointing experience. When we arrived, the restaurant was nearly empty with only about two tables of customers. Despite that, we were not greeted at the door and no one acknowledged us. We were left standing there trying to figure out if we were supposed to wait to be seated or seat ourselves, which already set a negative tone for the visit. That lack of attention ended up foreshadowing the rest of the service. After we were seated, everyone else at our table eventually received their food except me. When we were finally able to get the waitress's attention to ask about my order, she realized that my plate had been given to another table. By that point, I had already been waiting around 25 minutes, and I was on a limited lunch break, so the delay was extremely frustrating. To make matters worse, when it came time to pay, I was charged more than what I had actually ordered. At that point, I was so disappointed and pressed for time that I did not even bother disputing it and just wanted to leave. I want to note that this experience occurred at the Antojitos on Main Street location, not the Desert Gardens location. I truly hope management can address these issues, because first impressions matter, and this visit left a lot to be desired. read more

I must premise my review that I avoid Mexican food because of health concerns. So much of the Mex diet consists of meats, fried items and sugary drinks. My friend and I checked out Antojitos Como en Casa on a Sunday morning for brunch. The dining room was completely full which is a great sign--very popular among locals. However, the waiters were swamped and took three asks to finally get the menu and water. I highly recommend checking out the Plato Huatesco. The arrachera asada is legit! Very well marinated and tender. The quesadilla is also delicious. Highly recommend this restaurant for authentic Mexican food. I will come back hopefully on a less busy day. read more

On our way to Arizona we stopped here for a quick lunch based on the good Yelp reviews, and the reviews were right. This is a great 5 star casual restaurant to stop by in El Centro. I had the chilaquiles with 2 eggs over easy and they were the best I have had. I think what really made it great was the home made chips which stayed crispy and delicious throughout the meal. Usually chips in chilat most places quickly get soggy but these stayed pretty crisp I think because they were home made thick chips which tasted like they were just made. My wife and son had the enchiladas (one had the green sauce and the other the red) and both really enjoyed those as well. Service was pretty good as well, though it seems that they all take turns coming by the tables. We started with one person who took the order, but then had 2 or 3 others people either bringing the dishes or the check so you just have to ask any of the servers around you if you need something, but they are nice and responded quickly to anything we needed. read more

Food 10/10, service prompt, friendly, accommodating and filled with gratitude, ambiance has good musics, great lighting, and configurations for all party sizes. The mixiote was so good the meat fell right off the bones. Coffee made me think I was back in Mexico enjoying the good life. We've been working in Imperial County for over 15 years and we go to this place at least once a week when we are down here. Great salsa and chips to start. I always either get rolled corn tacos or the folded tacos. The food is great every time. They put all the delicious topping on either of those two plates and each bite has all kinds of textures and flavors. This is still the location to go to, I don't feel like the new location is as good as this one. Just a great local restaurant that is not trying to follow trends and just sticks to great tasting classics. We came in here late evening and were graciously accommodated. Our server was fantastic. We had the cheese enchiladas which were quite good. The kids had quesadilla which was also tasty. Coworkers and I stopped by for a late lunch before driving back to San Diego and the main seating area was full! It was a good sign that this restaurant was popular and turned out good food as well. They were out of agua fresca but the ice teas we ordered instead almost had to be two handed as they were so large. Food was authentic and filling. Chicken enfriojoladas were just like an enchilada but covered with a bean sauce. The green pozoles, only served Thursday's, were a hearty stew that my coworkers raved about. Looked for a place to stop in El Centro to eat that wasn't KYC or someplace where I would have to get tested for hepatitis afterwards. Something authentic and clean. Yelp comes through once again. Stopped in for a dish I saw on the Yelp review, but the proprietor told me it wasn't available that day. She recommended the chicken soup, that clearly was not the 'chicken soup' I grew up with, but a large bowl of flavor, warmth, spice and, like a warm hug, went by way too fast. I don't go through El Centró often.... But when I do, this will be a stopping spot. Btw.... With that said, I have to say that recently my coworkers and I have been very disappointed with the service. Not so much with the servers, but with the time it takes for our food to be prepared in the kitchen. We eat there during our lunch hour, and twice in the last 30 days, we've had to leave the restaurant because we had to get back to work and couldn't wait any longer for our food to come out. The first time happened at their original location. Today, it was at their second location on Main Street. On each occasion, the reason was that there was a large group and the kitchen was swamped. That's no excuse. Large groups at popular restaurants are to be expected, so management needs to ensure proper staffing during peak times. Again, the food is great and the servers are very nice, but if you see a large party and your time is limited, I suggest you go elsewhere. read more

On our way to our next adventure, we where going to go to ihop, but we decided to support a local business. I quickly found this restaurant with good reviews. Now this is a truly hidden gem! As soon as we enter they greeted us and sat us down. They provided us with chip and salsa. The chips where not homemade, salsa was a bit tricky to know if it was store bought. Food wise was good! The sopes where delicious! Ham and eggs where good, the ham was in chunks. The chilaquiles where delicious, the portions was a lot. I order a quesadilla, in the description it said it was handmade, but the flour tortilla tasted store bought. Their aguas frescas was delicious! Agua de coco and agua de fresa, we also got cafe de olla and fresh conchas. The fresh conchas taste that they where just made, very delicious! The waitress only stop to serve us and jut to take the plates didn't come back to check in between if we needed anything else (the restaurant wasn't full with guess). Today, 6/11/2024 I had a bad experience at this place. I ordered a carne asada plate. The carne asada was flavorless and so tough I couldn't chew it. The waitress came to check on us and I told her it was bad and the meat was tough and I couldn't eat it. I tried but I just couldn't eat it. She could have cared less. No mention of making something else for me or giving me a rebate for a $21 plate of food of which most of it I couldn't eat. The refried beans were liquid. Gross. I actually thought they made a mistake on the beans so I asked for another serving. I'll add a picture but there was a small amount of liquid beans on my plate. So she brings me a small Styrofoam container of more liquified beans! I couldn't get past the texture. So my boy and I are out $50 total and I left hungry. I went to Johnny's Burritos and got a delicious carne asada burrito that I could chew. Properly seasoned tender meat. It's sad that a $10 Johnny's burrito was way better than food served to me at antojitos como en tu casa. I'll never go to Antojitos again. This place use to be real popular and maybe they can make some things well. But! Don't ignore customers when they give you negative feedback. Don't serve tough inedible steaks and if you do, make it right! I'm glad Johnny's Burritos is located on my way home. I'd leave lower than a 1 star review if I could read more

Terrible experience, came in around 4 and sat down. Asked for aguas and said that they were sold out. Then asked for pozole, and said they were sold out and ran out of all the caldos. It seems like they didn't have enough to remain open. Recommend closing earlier if unable to supply with at least 50% of your menu. Would not recommend coming in in the afternoon, but unable to comment if they still have food in the morning. Wish the experience went better.
