first time coming and it was quite awful. the waitress were not attentive at all & while yes, they were busy, i've had to ask for the bill around 4 times. Ive had better service at other places. food was okay, nothing you can't get in other mexican restaurants nearby. Yelp asks that I consider a few things when reviewing, Food, Service and Ambiance, so I will touch on these points. The servers are very nice. The place was consistently crowded during our lunch. The ambiance was typical Mexican diner in an old house. And, one more thing, the beer was cold. On that note, I have to say the food is awful. I should have taken heed on tasting the chips that were fried in fishy, dirty grease. Second mistake, I ordered a chile relleno burrito, enchilada style. The lovely server let me know it came with rice and beans inside the burrito so I thanked her for letting me know and asked for NO rice. It came with rice inside and the relleno was fried in the same awful grease. Hubby had a lunch taco special, which comes with "soup", a watery tomato juice with fideo and no flavor. Beans were cold and the rice was bland starchy goo (his words). The tacos look nice, like in the photos online, but the shells at so thin, they break into small pieces when bitten. On our way to Oceanside from Maricopa, AZ., I was ready for a breakfast burrito after crossing the California border. I wasn't looking for just any burrito. I wanted one bursting with authentic Mexican flavors. I searched on Yelp and found this highly rated Mexican restaurant just a mile off of Interstate 8 in El Centro. I pulled off the Interstate on 4th St. and drove about a mile and passed it. It was easy to miss. I made a U-turn and drove slowly so I wouldn't miss it again. The restaurant looked like it may have been a house at one time. There was parking on the street and a small parking lot behind the building. The building sits just off the main street. It's actually a nice cozy looking building and it reminded me of a Mexican restaurant I dined at in a small town in Texas. When I walked in I knew I hit the jackpot. It was full of patrons eating breakfast and menudo and they were all Latinos/as! I ended up ordering Machaca, egg, & cheese and chorizo, egg, potato, and cheese breakfast burritos! For $11 they were big! It took a little bit for my burritos to come out, but they were worth the wait! My Machaca burrito was truly the best I ever had. It was moist to the point of juicy and very flavorful. I could taste the flavor off their seasoned grill! Just WOW! The chorizo burrito did not disappoint either. It was my wife's favorite! The salsa they included was also the bomb. It was freshly made, mild, and yet flavorful! I highly recommend this place if you're ever in or passing by El Centro for a truly authentic experience! OK, this part of my review is for my return trip to Arizona! You know I just had to return to this place! It was about 11am when I entered the restaurant; so figured I'd dine in for lunch. I noticed Borrego (lamb) was popular here after I read some reviews. So I ordered two Borrego tacos with rice, beans, and Mexican coke. I also ordered a Machaca breakfast burrito to go of course! Chips and salsa were brought out and I could tell the salsa was made fresh with roasted red peppers. It was so good and mild. It's the same salsa they give you with your to-go orders. They also brought lemon slices and a hot salsa specifically for the lamb tacos. Oh let me tell you; when they brought out my plate, I was salivating! The lamb must've been stewed or braised because I could tell it was juicy and flavorful. It came dressed with cilantro and onions. I drizzled them with some lemon juice and hot salsa. When I took a bite, my mouth did a happy dance! It was beyond juicy and my palate was hit with just a hint of lamb flavor; so if any of you are leary of eating lamb because of that wild taste you're not fond of, don't worry. It's very subtle. The rice and beans are some of the best I had. The beans had the right texture that I like and the rice was moist and flavorful. Usually I have to add salsa to the rice to improve the flavor, but not with theirs. I love discovering gems like this! Do yourself a favor and make a pit stop whenever you pass by. We stopped in right at lunch time so it was fairly busy. But we didn't have a problem getting a table for 2. The server was friendly and helped us with portion sizes and what would work for our appetites. We ordered tacos and a taco plate. I ordered 2 al pastor tacos. They came with onions, cilantro and guacamole. There was too much guacamole for my taste. And I think there could have been a little more meat. But overall the food was good. Unless you live somewhere around this is a traveling stop off the freeway. Parking was difficult if you are longer than a car. Our RV was a pain, it's not in a great location- sorta sketchy. The Giant burrito was flaming Hot in temperature and loaded with meats and beans. The tortilla was thicker and almost more bread like. It was good and about $13 I want to say. I paid $2 for a small fold over sandwich bag of tortilla chips- which was crazy- cuz as I waited the waitress was cleaning tables from a busy restaurant and if the bowls of chips / salsa off the table were not eaten she dumped them back into the kitchen chips and salsa That was Huge concerned moment !!!!! Second time we have stopped here on our way to California. We usually have our dog so we can't stop every time we pass through as it's too hot for him. This place rocks. Totally authentic. This place has REAL Mexican dishes with REAL Mexican flavor. Not just Carne asada, enchiladas and tacos. Lol. Many if not all Mexican restaurants claim "Authentic" in their name. This place doesn't have to; it simply should be a given, right? The variety in their extensive selection, the option to order breakfast at breakfast time or choose from any part of the rest of the menu if you're not feeling breakfast, is another plus. You have to give this place a try. Others are perhaps more well established in the city being they have been around forever or have more of party feel. It was hot & humid and we were next door waiting for a tire so we decided to go to Letty's to grab a bite and wait where it was cooler. The menu has a good assortment. I chose the ceviche tostada which was shrimp which comes with one tostada shell that I asked for on the side. My husband decided on a pastor burrito with beans and rice added to the burrito. The ceviche came first and we started on it like an appetizer. It had a fresh flavor and was delicious. I ended up eating it as a tostada because it was so good. And I felt good for eating healthy. My husband's burrito came a bit later and it was huge! Like as long from my wrist to my elbow! It was weird laying open but because of the beans and rice, I guess they didn't want to roll it. It made it a knife and fork meal as opposed to eating in with your hands. But it was good. They make homemade flour tortillas and they were good. The adobado meat had charred edges and, yet, was tender inside. The beans were very tasty, too. He could only eat half of it so we packed up the rest for home. I would definitely go back to Letty's. Our server was very nice and the food was great. Seeing the Caldo de Res and Pollo as well as small bowls of another type of soup made me want to get that-but it would have to wait til next time. read more
