I'm a long time El Centro native, though I've been away for a while.In the mean time, one of my favorite Mexican places finally went out of business - if you're from here you know which one I mean! I guess you can't mention this place without reference to that one. To me, this compared favorably, which isn't surprising since it was started by one of the same people. We came in on a weeknight - they're closed on weekends. The waitress was really friendly. The salsa and chips were as I remembered - fair waning, the salsa has cilantro, so ask for it without if you aren't a fan, but I am. I had the simple machaca burrito and a mini special quesadilla, Both were great. I believe the food is Sonora-style northwestern Mexican. The burritos aren't small but they aren't the massive monstrosities you may be used to if you're from elsewhere. The quesadilla is a local specialty, it's nice to have a little one. And a Negro Modelo beer which I always like! My sister had machaca and eggs. Sobe's is right down the street from my parents' house, so I'll be back to try other things! If I lived here I might be here every week, so it gets five stars from me! read more

1st time dining here. Very spacious and music subtle. We were there at 2pm, so not very busy, but wait staff was very attentive and not intrusive. We had the chili relleno and chicken enchiladas. Red sauce was great and the chicken tender. Chili was good except the chili still had the seeds in it. Rice was good, not overcooked. Buenuelos (sp?) Were great. Not greasy, and a large plate size. I wasn't sure what to expect from Sobe's, but dropped by here a few days go after a recommendation from a local. The inside has tons of seating and you seat yourself, but yet they serve you. The service was pretty good with just a little wait at the end of our check. With lots of options on the menu I decided to order a *Chili Verde Burrito* and got it fried for 50 cents more. My burrito was smaller than I expected as I feel there is more filling at Taco Shops as compared to this sit down restaurant. The pork had good flavor and texture and customizing my burrito here was a great choice as you can never go wrong with fried anything! I left satisfied and also quenched my thirst with yummy horchata. I would give this place 3.5 stars for when in the area of El Centro for some tasty Mexican food with decent pricing. read more

Sobe's had great reviews so we decided to give it a try. It's at the end of a row of stores in a shopping center. There were no cars and we could only see lights at the very top of the front so we were worried it was closed. But there is a sign that said Open so we were happy. The place doesn't look very big from the outside. But when you enter, there is a large room with lots of tables-then as you go back there is another room to the side. The place can definitely hold a lot of people. We were told that it can get busy at lunch-especially Saturdays. They are open Monday through Saturday 10am to 8pm and closed on Sunday. We chose our table and ordered drinks. The drinks came with chips and salsa. My hubs loved the chips which were a bit thick. We both liked the salsa as well-which never happens as it usually is too spicy for my husband-but it wasn't and it had good flavor so I liked it too. I was excited because Thursday is Caldo de Pollo and it is a favorite of mine. Both my husband and I ordered the large Caldo de Pollo. They also serve Albondigas daily so we decided to have a small bowl of Albondigas as well to try it. The other soup they serve on Monday & Wednesday is Caldo de Res. The soup came and we tried the Albondigas. It was absolutely delicious. The broth was very flavorful with chunks of veggies and the meatballs were tasty and tender. The bowl of Caldo de Pollo was indeed large, had big pieces of chopped chicken with chunks of veggies too. The broth was good but we felt it needed a bit more chicken flavor. It may have been since we were there around 4:45 because she had to go back to see if it was ready. Everyone was so nice and friendly. The food came out pretty fast and super hot. We would definitely order the Albondigas again and we will try more items of the menu next time too. read more

I srsly think people were staring at me...LOL...watching me really enjoy the scrumptious food that was before me!!! Ahhhhh...That was a Happy Memory! The Chips & Salsa...Perfection... I've never enjoyed chips as much as I enjoyed these...the Salsa had a wonderful flavor & nice spicy kick too! Oh, what to do...what to do... Oh, I know... Order some C&S to go! YUM!!! The service was excellent! Excellent! Our server, Nohemi, is so sweet & helpful! My only issues were: * At the bottom of my tea, there were some loose tea leaves...so, I couldn't enjoy the last sips without drinking leaves... Searching for good restaurants is harder as you get further away from major cities. Took my mom out for Mother's Day today, found this place on yelp of course. I was pleasantly surprised! The service was great and the food was very good. The food was served hot, we got a choice of refried or whole beans. I had 2 ala carte items, the super taco and a chile relleno. The chile was well prepared, with the traditional sauce poured on top--- very tasty. The super taco was a taco made with a flour tortilla & was also very good. Portions were good, chips & salsa were also good and chips tasted freshly fried, perfectly salted. This was a great find today, would definitely come back. read more

Great spot to stop for a sit down meal. Or call in your order and pick it up if you are on the go. I decided to try the cactus and eggs....I like a bit of adventure! It was ok, cactus was cooked but rather plain. I have eaten it raw in the wild and this was not as exciting. The rice and beans was ok as well. The corn tortillas were DA BEST, maybe other dishes are mo better. Still, $20 for dinner seemed a bit steep. As someone who spent the first 18 years of my life loving The Hacienda Restaurant in Imperial, California, I go to Sobe's now that The Hacienda is closed. Great Special Quesadillas and Chile Rellenos and everything else. Great friendly service. I stop by every time I come back to my home town of El Centro except on Sundays when they are closed. If you've ever been to Camacho's, this is the same type of menu choices and style of cooking. I was pleasantly surprised by the service and how fresh the food was. What a HUGE disappointment! We dined here based on readers' recommendations. It is possibly the worst Mexican food I have ever had! Having lived in San Diego and San Jose, I have had a wide range of Mexican food. I ordered the chicken enchilada and beef taco but they ran out of chicken due to a large party ahead of us. The enchilada sauce tasted like plain tomato sauce out of a can. No spices at all, even chili powder. No cheese anywhere, just topped with shredded lettuce. We had been here once and thought the food was good. My parents had come to town to visit so we thought we would bring them here for some good Mexican food. To our surprise the service was AWFUL, long wait to give an order and even LONGER wait to get our food. I went back once to ask if they had forgotten about us. I went in anyway and met Sobe who was so friendly and personable. Even though they had closed down everything and all the cooks had gone home Sobe still offered to whip up some food. Black Box Warning: This is ! NOT ! a vegetarian-friendly place! Beans are made with lard; even the tortilla chips are fried in lard. Besides that, the enchilada sauce looked and tasted like tomato paste fresh from a can. Guacamole contains no seasoning except salt and a hint of lemon. This place gets two stars rather than one because the staff are amazingly friendly and accommodating, even to weirdos that don't eat animals, but they don't understand us. We told the server we were vegetarians and asked her to let us know if there was anything with lard or chicken broth in our orders. She did as we asked, and advised us to have boiled rather than refried beans. Then she brought out our chips and salsa without a word. One taste was all it took. The server confirmed the chips were fried in lard, and brought out steamed tortillas instead. We were so pleased to find Sobe's. It was early, just a little after 10 am and we wanted to have breakfast / lunch, having just left Yuma. Well Sobe's was open - we called - and when we entered we may have beent the first of the day. The Waitress was nice and cheerful and helpful. The Menu was extensive and we were oh so simple. A chili verde burrito and a taquito for me and a machaca and egg burriot for her, well the burritos were both so meaty. and the machaca was so tasty and the chili verde was again so flavorful and we want to come back and it is so far away now in the rear view mirror. I am a big fan of machaca, which is a mexican style marinated shredded beef. This place makes some amazing machaca. The beef is well seasoned, moist, and comes out piping hot. Add homemade tortilla and their house salsa and BOOM, pure deliciousness! I've tried both their regular machaca burrito and their machaca w/ egg burrito. While I like the one w/ egg, I prefer just the regular machaca burrito. To top it all off, all the servers are nice, the restaurant is clean, and there's plenty of parking. Like a previous reviewer, I like Sobe's more than Celia's. The chips and salsa at Sobe's is better because they come out fresh and hot. Also, the machaca at Celia's is good but definitely not as good as Sobe's. I can't wait to try more stuff here at Sobe's. My only gripe w/ Sobe's is that they going to ruin my diet because I am always craving their machaca burrito. Damn you Sobe's.... damn your delicious machaca! read more

The service has been fine every time all 3 times I've been here on business meals. But the food is just missing something, mainly flavor. One of the other reviews suggested that the food is microwaved, and considering that my Chile verde pieces were cold on the outside edge and warm under the sauce, it is a possibility.
