I had visited those other sides of the property before, so I had to stop in to check out the beer side. Sharing the same building as the winery, the brewery side is very rustic looking with wine barrels stacked in the "dining" room portion of the brewery. There is a counter but barstools are VERY limited. The nice part of that is that it clears space to allow new purchases to occur without reaching over someone. I decided to do my usual flight whenever checking out a brewery for the first time. They have four 5 oz for $10 at the time of my visit. And they had loads of options to choose from. One of the really cool things they do is have light IPA's, IPA's, and their SMaSH beer comes if five single hop varieties so that if you order a flight of SMaSH, you can tell the differences in the hops. Very cool. I will have to try that the next time. Since I wanted more variety, I went with a Blood Orange Blonde (4.7%, 25IBU) which was citrusy, but not too sour. I then went with the SMaSH with the Calypso hops (4.7%, 47) which was hoppy, but aptly named light. I followed up with their regular IPA (American) at a kicking 7% (52 IBU) that was really well balanced. And I finished off with a really tasty Vanilla Bean Milk Stout (5%, 24). It's pretty rare when I like all the flavors I pick in a flight, but this was about as close as I've been. Very good options! The service in the afternoon was great, though I will say there weren't a lot of folks at the counter at 3 in the afternoon. But would you believe it if I told you we were also home to a wonderfully unique bourbon distillery? Well, you should. Old 55, located about 20 miles west-northwest of Crawfordsville on ... wait for it ... Old SR-55, is not just producing fine quality bourbon. They're experimenting with the process, pushing the envelope and developing new ways of producing this time-honored beverage. For example, from planting the grains to bottling the liquor, Old 55 does absolutely everything on site. Many distilleries -- even so-called "craft" distilleries -- source their raw material from somewhere else. The number that actually distill their own whiskey is much smaller than these so-called "small batch" operations would have you believe. And almost none -- like, a handful in the entire world -- grow their own grains. But at Old 55, absolutely everything is done right there. They grow the grain, they ferment the mash, they distill 'beer', they age the whiskey, they bottle the bourbon. In short: They do it all. Ask your own 'local' distillery if they do that. Even in Kentucky or Tennessee , the answer is usually 'No' -- though you might have to pose some pretty persistent questions to get them to admit it. Moreover, Old 55 goes well beyond the strict, minimum requirements for true "Bourbon". By law, a true bourbon has to have a corn content of at least 51%. At Old 55, the white whiskey and even the bourbon are 80% corn -- lending the final product a smooth, clean flavor that would hold its own among any of the finest distilled spirits I've had in the Heartland. In fact, while most bourbons are made from feed corn, Old 55 makes a 100% Sweet Corn Bourbon -- to my knowledge, the only bourbon on the planet that is entirely made of sweet corn. Thus, when they say that their bourbon is "unique", they're using the word absolutely literally. Only one distillery in the world can say these things ... and it's right here in Newtown, Indiana. But there is another distillery quietly making small-batch, high-quality spirits in Nashville, and that's Bear Wallow Distillery. Located just outside of downtown Nashville, Bear Wallow Distillery is one of the only female-owned distilleries in the country. They create their spirits in a traditional copper pot still, which I learned is unique. Inside the tasting room, you can enjoy a whiskey tasting or a flight, or sip a craft cocktail and relax in the shop. I chose to enjoy a "Call Me Old Fashioned" standing up at the bar, while chatting with the guy who made me my drink. My Old Fashioned was well balanced, not too sweet and made me feel all warm inside, as a good Old Fashioned should. Those who are interested in learning more about the whiskey-making craft can go on a Farm-to-Fifth Tour, which takes you behind the scenes to learn about the history of whiskey and see the full production process. I did, and I found it very informative! I had a new appreciation for the kind of whiskey and spirits they are making here at Bear Wallow Distillery. From the ingredients they choose to the barrels they use, they really put their foot in it, as they say. It appeared that there was only one bartender working, a female, and she never acknowledged us. We sat there for at least 10 minutes, directly in front of the bar, in a small establishment where it would have been difficult not to notice us. Having worked in the restaurant industry myself, I understand that things can get busy, and I always try to give staff the benefit of the doubt. I would have been perfectly happy with a simple "Hi, I'll be right with you!" Just acknowledging our presence would have been enough. Both couples at the bar received their drinks and eventually sat down, yet we were still completely ignored. We weren't sure what the bartender was doing, as her other four customers had already been served. Regardless, a simple greeting or acknowledgment is basic customer service. After waiting several more minutes without a single word from her, we decided to leave. We walked right past the bartender on our way out, and she still said absolutely nothing. We were left feeling as though our presence--and our business--simply didn't matter. It's disappointing because this could be a really cool place, and we had hoped to enjoy our visit. Unfortunately, the lack of acknowledgment and customer service made that impossible. Another observation is that the atmosphere felt uncomfortably quiet, with no music playing, to the point that you almost feel like you have to whisper. Some background music could go a long way toward making the space feel more welcoming. I'm hoping Mark Pressley or Mark Taylor will take the time to look into this situation. If camera footage is available, perhaps reviewing it could help clarify what happened and provide an opportunity for staff training. Even a short training reminder about the importance of greeting guests, acknowledging their presence, and communicating when service is delayed could make a meaningful difference. We understand that everyone has off days, but being completely ignored for that long, especially in a small establishment, is unacceptable.
