A stop post hike at McCormick's creek. It's off the main roads, as others have noted, but there are signs in case you lose your mapping app. We each did a tasting, 4 wines for $8. The pours are generous and there's a wide selection to chose from. You can get the wine slushies and cider in your flight, too. The Georgia cupcake is a must have. The 4 of us split one and I'm not a sweets person but this was fantastic. They also have a rotating cheesecake. The inside seating area is small but there's a nice outdoor patio with tables and chairs and picnic tables in the yard.

Off the beaten path, worth a road trip to visit the quaint winery with extra tasty wine options produced on site. The owner was very insightful and he was a delight to chat with about their quality wines. They have over a 100 persimmon trees that are useful to produce two persimmon wines and one is kept in a Buffalo Trace bourbon barrel to add that extra kick. Sulfites often bother me, no bother here as these wines were all interesting and delicious. Support this locally owned business that supports others locally for sourced items. Can't wait to return here to sit outside with some wine, friends and the dog. Nice find to have an extra creamy piece of cheese cake while over looking their well kept grounds.

Such a beautiful winery! This is off the beaten path a ways, but definitely worth the trip if you're near Spencer. The winery has lots of table space available for guests & have an "order at the counter" system which is nice. It's very laidback inside & the owners and staff are so friendly. I usually get a wine flight to try multiple wines, but on this visit we decided to get their special Sangrja pitcher. It was a great deal and so good! We also ordered the Brie board & a grilled cheese to snack on. The appetizer boards are very filling and perfect to eat on while wine tasting. The winery also offers some of the best cheesecake I've had - the turtle is my favorite!

If you like tasty wine and good conversation, make a point of traveling a few miles south of Spencer to check out this family owned/run winery. They have a small vineyard of their own grapes and an orchard where they grow some of the fruits for their wines/ciders. They do have to order some base fruit/juice from other states to offer a wider range of wine types than can be grown locally, but the family handles its own processing of raw ingredients to the wine stage "in-house". As you pull into this rural location, you are likely to be greeted by the large and friendly dog. He is very laid back and seemed part of the charm that exudes from the place. From the lot in front of the tasting room, you can see the vineyard and the outdoor seating area complete with a large tent that offers shade during the hot summer. Once inside, the tasting room is small and has a counter where you will be greeted and offered 6 tastings for $5. Like most wineries, their list begins with the dry wines and progresses to the sweeter ones, including ciders. I had the benefit of being served by the husband/owner of the winery and thoroughly enjoyed hearing about the wines, the food that he likes to prepare to go with them, and about the challenges of running a winery. He hopes that business will continue to thrive so that one day, the winery may support a bistro as well. The predominant type of offering here is the fruit wine because of the easy availability of source fruit. But I sampled wines from a variety of types and found quite a few that I really liked. I really enjoyed the "Old River Red" (Petite Sirah) and the "Covered Bridge White" (Cayuga grapes). There also was a tasty Traminette (grown on the property) called "Harvest Moon". Over on the fruit wine side, I sampled the site grown Persimmon, the locally sourced Blackberry, and an apple based cider called the "Cantankerous Neighbor". The cider is much lower in ABV than the wines and has some effervescence. For visitors who want to try something unique, there is also a "Hop Head Mead" which should appeal to IPA drinkers. I really enjoyed my visit and recommend taking the adventure to Spencer to relax and support a local winery. Review #989

Finally had the opportunity to check the Owen Valley Winery and I was not disappointed at all. The view is absolutely gorgeous, the wine is very tasty and the staff is very professional/informative! I am looking forward to my next visit.

Very cute winery hidden through some back roads. We went on a Saturday night while there was a live band playing. The bartender was very friendly and knowledgeable. It was nice to sit outside and listen to music while enjoying a the conversation and wine. My husband and I did a wine tasting, he is a beer guy though so he didn't like any of them. He was a good sport. The Crimson and Cream is my favorite I even bought a bottle to take home I should've bought more. When we were walking out the door a friendly older gentlemen was coming in he said goodbye and thanked us for coming. He def could've ignored us and went on his way but it was nice to see his appreciation. My guess was he was the owner. We will def go back when in the area.

No yak milk (booo!), but there is wine. However, I must warn all of the people who prefer dry wine:…read moreThere is no dry wine here. It's all sweet. Even the driest of the wines, the Cabernet Sauvignon, is very sweet. So, if you love sweet wines, this place is for you! Right now, they are only pouring a Cabernet, a red blend, a Riesling and a sweet Rose. The grapes are imported, but Woolley Yak has their own vineyard, and the intention is that they will soon start producing wine from their own grapes. You can get a flight of wine, or a glass of wine, or a mimosa, and then you can take your wine outside with you as you explore the grounds. There are picnic benches here and there. There's also a food truck that sells four different types of grilled cheese sandwiches and handheld charcuterie cups. I think food is only available Friday through Sunday, though. I visited with children (well, a teen and an almost tween), but they are a good hang and will play on a playground with the best of them, so we headed straight for the nature play space. The playground was designed to encourage kids to engage in unstructured play, so it has a lot of natural elements all around, like tree stumps, hay bales and logs. My kids are "co-op kids" for life (their early years were spent at a nature-based cooperative preschool), so they thrive with this type of playground. There's also a tire mound to climb, a balance beam to balance on, and a basketball shooting station made from a grain wagon. There's lots of space to run around, and a few trees to climb, too. The big draw of Woolly Yak is the yaks! There are also Babydoll Southdown sheep, Kunekune pigs and chickens that live on the ranch. You can just sit on a bench and watch these animals do their things in their living spaces. Or, if you want a more up-close experience, you can purchase a ticket to one of the animal experiences, like storytime with sheep or tea with lambs. You can also experience brushing the yaks and giving them treats. If you didn't want to do any of those experiences, though, you could just visit the ranch to see the animals for free! There is no admission to enter the ranch or to park. It's a nice place to visit to stroll around and see what you can see.

I will say these are sweet wines so if you're a dry wine person I would go to see the Yaks, not drink the wine. But I love the concept of grabbing a glass or a bottle walking around the grounds and visiting the Yak pen. There is a beautiful pond on site along with a food truck and some picnic tables, which is perfect for an afternoon outside to relax and enjoy nature. The website mentioned sheep, chickens, and pigs, (as well as Yaks) I only saw the pigs and Yaks while I was there however I did not inquire about the other animals, So if you're going for the animals you may want to call as I'm not sure if the other animals are only out certain times.

Initially, we were unsure where to enter; there's a barn structure and a house and we didn't want to walk into someone's home accidentally! But, the tasting room is indeed located in the unassuming converted house. The interior has a bar area, a couple seating spaces and an outdoor space. The tasting is generous, 5 wines for $5 plus the slushies. This winery specializes in fruit wines, which tend to be sweeter than what I typically drink. However, the pear wine was a refreshing delight after our day in the steamy outdoors. The slushies were surprising-I also don't usually like these because of their sweetness- but the ones here were not sticky sweet. Small charcuterie snacks are offered if you need a snack with your flight, glass or bottle. I wish I got the name of the woman helping us. We had great conversation and she made the experience comfortable, casual and just fun. Tilted Compass was the kind of place you can visit after enjoying a day outside at the park. Or add this winery to your list of new places to try for a low key weekend adventure.

This one, however, rocketed to the top of our list among Hoosier wineries whose products we have tried. Not only was the wine a treat, the experience of the visit was also memorable. The facility was very nice, from the impressive external landscaping to the lovely wine shop/tasting bar to the relaxing garden-patio-themed dining area. We visited with the intention of just doing a tasting but ended up having a light lunch along with that tasting. We were glad that we did as the charcuterie board that we ordered was terrific with olives, naan, hummus, chips, cucumbers and more. It was enough to be shareable. But the highlight was still the wine. We also shared the flight as we did not want to overdo it. We tried the Peach Sangrini, Peach Pie, Lemon Moscato, Raspberry Espresso and Sweet Red Lime. All were good but I'd have to say that the standouts to me were the Lemon Moscato, which was refreshing and tasty, and the Sweet Red Lime which delivered what the name implied with a citrusy, lightly sweet flavor. The prices were not bad as I thought it was a good value for what we received. I would be remiss if I did not also note that the service was top-notch. Our server was efficient, attentive and knowledgeable. The greeter was also pleasant and welcoming. It is likewise noteworthy that we had our 8-month-old granddaughter with us, and it was greatly appreciated that they offered a family-friendly experience that accommodated her as well. Our daughter and son-in-law live in Indy, so this place is just an hour or so away. We'll look forward to the next time we can visit as there are several other varieties of wine that appear to be worth trying.
