Pleasantly surprised by this winery. It'd been quite a few years since my last visit and I was shocked by the growth. There is now a restaurant, distillery, brewery in addition to the winery. We ended up having lunch before doing a wine tasting. We liked all of the wine that we tried and even ended up taking some home. The winery, restaurant & brewery are all housed in a redone barn. We stopped by on our drive from Bloomington to Indy to break up the drive and try a winery we hadn't been to before. I generally have low expectations for Indiana wines, and this was pretty much what I expected. Of the four wines in my flight, I couldn't even finish two of them. (A shame since they charge more for a flight than any other IN winery I've been to -- $14 for 4 wines!) The Cab/Zin blend was not too bad -- better than I had expected, actually, so the tasting was off to a good start. But the dry Riesling was awful. It had a distinct funk to it. As a wine specialist, I feel like I should be able to describe it better than that, but I didn't want to keep sipping to identify the "funk" more precisely. The semi-dry Riesling was drinkable (but way sweeter than semi-dry). The "semi-sweet" Traminette was full-on, dessert wine level super-sweet and lacking any acidity to balance out the sweetness. I couldn't finish that one either because I was actually starting to feel a little sick from the intense sweetness. My husband liked the Zin in his flight, and I thought it was okay. I also tasted his blackberry wine. I usually like blackberry wines because they have acidity & tartness to balance the sweetness, but this one did not. It was just all sweet. The service was fine, and the atmosphere was nice. I enjoyed the classic rock music. The winery shares space with 450 North. I can't say anything about the 450 North stuff or the restaurant because I don't like beer and we didn't get food, so the two stars is based on wine quality alone. I'm glad we stopped by so I know what it is, but we definitely won't go out of our way to visit again. read more

It is certainly a-ok. And we had such a nice visit, I'm bumping it to 4 stars! The rundown: -The winery shares the location with an event space and a brewery. A brewery I had been wanting to visit, in fact! How convenient! -Off the beaten path. Not quiet as 'in town' as I anticipated. -Ample parking. -Six tastings for $4. -Dry and sweet and all in between are offered here. We drove up about 15 minutes after they opened. Walked up to the tasting bar and showed our IDs and got ready to wine-down. Jean was our tasting host/guide and she was lovely. You get a laminated menu of their wines and a dry-erase marker to indicate what you would like to try. I tend to lean towards sweet, but I am also starting to enjoy drier varieties. So I opted for a few semi-dry and semi-sweet options. Those were sweet enough for my sweet tooth! The sweet wines are like candy, if that is your thing! The bottles are fairly and affordably priced. I got two bottles and with the tasting on top of that, I paid less than $30 for my whole visit. I don't necessarily foresee myself coming back here, at least not for the wine alone. It was good and I liked it, but it wasn't my favorite. But rolled in with the attached brewery...for sure! Together, they make for a visit to remember! read more

We had a delightful afternoon here after running the Mill Race Half/Marathon in September. We put our name in for a table outside and then hit the tasting counter while we waited which was perfect. When our table was called we were in the middle of the tasting and they told us to take our time our table would be ready when we were done which was quite nice. Once outside we ordered a wine flight some cheese curds and pizza. Since this place is kind of off the beaten path the patio looks out over fields and there's not a lot of hustle and bustle around so it was just such a nice peaceful afternoon! After many years of visiting Simmons Winery, the visit today will be our last. The elderly lady at the tasting counter on Friday, 11/9 was one of rudest customer service representatives I have ever encountered. We had to wait for her to finish a personal conversation with a fellow employee for she acknowledged us. Not one smile. I had requested a tasting of the wine I had in my hand to purchase. She reluctantly gave me a tasting in a plastic Dixie cup. When my wife asked for a tasting of the wine she was going to purchase; she used the same cup. No conversation and continued the interaction with her buddy. Because of her rudeness, my wife decided not to make a purchase. I would think the Simmons family has worked way too hard to build their business to have such a representative dealing with the public. read more

This was a fun stop. We paid for two tastings and sampled many of their different wines. We are baby wine drinkers and like sweet wines. They had many to offer. The woman pouring was friendly in a genuine way. We bought six bottles because there is a discount when you do. They have plenty of merchandise as well. I ran across this winery on my way from Louisville back to Indianapolis. (I actually saw the sign and decided it sounded like a good idea.) it is a joint winery and brewery and was very inviting. The staff I interacted with were all very nice. Staff wise, the bartender didn't seem to know a ton about wine. But I do think I was in the brewery side. While she didn't know exactly what wine would suit me best, she did offer me samples of a few of them to try. (Very well dome and we found one I really enjoyed very quickly.). When I was leaving, I decided I wanted to buy a bottle of the wine I was drinking. While I was looking for it, I found another one I was interested in and asked about it. I was given a sample of it and then got offered another sample of a reserve wine that people liked better. I loved the level of service that I received at this winery and will definitely make it a stop on my trips through Columbus. read more

Simmons Winery has been around nearly twenty years and continues to grow. They share a main building with a sister brewery and restaurant. Across the parking lot is a banquet hall and an outdoor shelter and garden. The winery portion of the building is on the smallish side. There is a counter on the left with a tiny "rope" blocking off the 21+ only area. I wanted to do a tasting, so I asked and the server went to find someone to conduct the tasting. While I waited, I was able to check out a lot of merchandise (along the wall with the wine counter). After a brief wait, I was able to try six of their two page wine menu samples for $4. They have shading to indicate which wines are made from fruit grown on their own property. The tasting runs the standard range from dries, to semi sweets, and finishes with sweet and fruit wines, but you can pick and choose as you like. All of the varieties that I tried were good, but a few really stood out. The "Chardonel Vintner's Reserve" (2016) was a delightful way to start the tasting. My third choice was a table wine "Autumn Blush"(2016) that was so delicious that I asked for a bottle to take home! The Reisling and Rhubarb selections were quite good too, but I decided to go with something unique and different, so I picked up a Cranberry-Apple wine that should make for some enjoyable evenings out by the neighbor's fire pit. To sum it up, great atmosphere but it was kind of slow. We used to go to the old building. Since, I've switched to Gluten free so options are limited but they do have a GF pizza. It was okay, but not hot enough. We got pork nachos which were cold. They did refund us and give us chips and queso which was very nice. The pretzel I'm told didn't take like a pretzel but looked good and that cheese was good. Id give it another chance but I wasn't my best experience! The wine is delicious though! read more

All the food we had here was delicious and very fresh tasting. Ordered a half Margarita pizza for me and half veggie along with garlic bread, chips and salsa. Also got a glass of wine and an IPA beer both very good as well. I'm definitely a fan of this place and if I lived in the area, I'd go more often. The only complaint I had was the water. Simmons Winery is pretty far off the beaten path. Then again most wineries are tucked away in a far off place. Simmons shares a building with the up and coming 450 North Brewing. All the food options you get at 450, have no fear of missing othem because you're in the same room as the tastings area. (be sure to get a pizza!) The tasting bar is pretty small but honestly I'd say most visitors are there for the beer. You get 6 wine samples for the steep price of free. When we visited we had our puppy with us. Being that they serve food inside we knew we couldn't bring her in with us. Luckily they let me take each sample outside to enjoy with my girlfriend. Once we were finished we bought a few bottles and hung out on their covered patio. The atmosphere is always buzzing and every time I've been there it's never been dead. I had done some searching online to find a winery on the way up north to Indy. I found a few around Columbus and, partly due to hours partly due to reviews, we decided to stop at Simmons. At the time, we were the only ones there (we got there minutes after they opened) so it was just the two of us doing a tasting. We each made our selections and start our tastings. I went with pretty much all sweet wines, which they had plenty of. I wanted a bottle of everything I tried but only left with 3 (an Autumn Blush, Catawba, and one more that I can't remember). The woman doing our tasting wasn't the most chatty, but she could answer any of our questions and kept our samples coming in a timely manner. I didn't realize while looking this place up, that the 450 brewery was attached, so once you're done with the wine, walk the few steps to the brewery sampling area. read more

Pizza is fantastic. Solid beers and wines as well. It's a little loud, but it's a pizza joint! At the wine tasting bar I did not care for the lighting. The red wines appear dull, almost brown instead of the actual deep reds. They should address that. But overall outstanding. read more

Arguably the worst winery on the Indy Wine trail. The owner often tends the tasting room and is far from friendly. Becomes frustrated when there are more than a couple people in the building. The price to taste is a bit steep for the quality of the wine. Every wine Simmons makes can be found in a much better example elsewhere on the wine trail. While they do have a few standout wines, they're still nothing to write home about. While they have a decent setting for a Midwest winery, it pales in comparison to Mallow Run, Oliver, and even Cedar Creek, as does the professionalism of the staff. They have recently opened a brewery which is a nice touch but possibly underscores the weakness in their core winery business. While a must stop to finish the whole Indy wine trail, I would recommend skipping Simmons if you have to skip one or two. Just not worth it. read more

Our first visit to Simmons was October 4th - a friend of ours told us that the pizza was really good - typically, if we want great pizza my husband drives to his old college town and hits the pizzeria there and brings back several to freeze. Tired of the 3 hours drive we opted to give Simmons a try. At first, we were not too sure about things, our waitress was less than personable ( that eventually changed) and we waited for 40 minutes to get our food - we later found out that a large group came in front of us and that the pizza oven could only accommodate so many pizzas. Once the pizza did arrive it was AMAZING. So this review is based on the food and not the service or wait for this particular visit. Was it worth the wait? Absolutely, is it as good as the pizza from Pagliais' in Charleston, Illinois? Let's just say Pagliais' gets an 11 and this pizza a 10. Additionally, we have made two more visits to Simmons and the wait staff exceeded our expectations and once again so did the food. We ordered the pork tenderloin - tender, perfectly cooked and served on a very fresh bun! The tenderloin is the BEST we've ever had. It gets an 11! We intend to return in the future and look forward to a spring/summer visit to check out the vineyards and outdoor seating. read more

Tasted several wines. Bought about 4 bottles. Not thrilled with a tasting fee. One of the bottles of cabernet sauvignon was bad. still fermenting in the bottle and had an inch of sediment on the bottom. Sent them an email but never got a response. Simmons has a restaurant (450 North Brewing Company) that serves delicious fire stone pizza. I've had their pizza and pasta. They don't have a large menu, but what they have is tasty. They have beer too. I'm not as fond as beer than I am to wine, but I tried it and it was delicious for beer. I like their rhubarb wine. read more

We had our wedding and reception at Simmons Winery and it was very disappointing. We requested the reception to last until midnight, but they did everything in their power to end it early. The winery does not care about making extra money. They are very disorganized and the customer service is poor. They were very rude to our guests. Worst experience of all wineries! Difficult to find as its off the beaten path and the setting is beautiful, but the reception was cold and unfriendly. The woman providing the wine tasting seemed irritated that we wanted to sample the wine. She shared no knowledge if the wines and had no interest in chatting with customers. My husband went to the bar to taste beers while I paid the $2 for five tastings (I only tasted four because the reception was so chilly). I chose one wine and ordered three bottles. I am the only customer at the wine tasting area. She retireves my bottles, I have my credit card in hand and she chooses to provide menus to four people who seated themselves and came in after me. Her excuse...she hated seeing people wait at a table and they only had one waitress at the time. Then she decided to bring them water, while I wait. She takes their order then comes to coldly apologize for not ringing me up. I asked for a double bag to hold all three bottles safely. Again, her irritation seemed unprofessional. I went to the bar and sat next to my husband in a small bar area. Holds maybe 10 people. I was ignored by three people behind the bar For close to Five minutes. Incredible! I ordered water because I was DONE with them at tht point. There were weak apologies from the wine lady but not sincere enough for me to ever consider returning. No apologies were given for ignoring me at the bar. Maybe I'm invisible today. Smiles and customer service can go a long way. I might suggest Simmons personnel take some lessons. read more

We held our daughter's wedding reception here. Be forewarned. Get EVERYTHING in writing. The owner promised to set up the outdoor pavilion for cocktail hour with white table cloths and simple candles. This was discussed on 3 different occasions and we were even quoted the price of the tablecloths. She just didn't do it. She quoted us the price of outdoor heaters to warm this space @ $50 each but neglected to include the additional price of propane and taxes. So the expected charge of $150 morphed into $225. Since the outdoor space was never set up, the heaters went unused. She verbally offered 2 weeks before the wedding to provide top shelf liquor at the well bar rate. She started the evening providing it. When the wedding party arrived and the groom requested a Crown and coke, she refused him. When I asked her why, she said " I changed my mind". She loudly told a guest that "the bride's mother said no top shelf liquor " which obviously caused embarrassment when my guest told me her comment. She continued to display top shelf bottles all evening. The coffee tasted like water and was undrinkable. A splash of cream turned it white. When another guest told her that obviously someone made a mistake her response was " too bad. That's the way it is". She did this while tending bar all evening with a scowl on her face. During the planning process emails went unanswered, she was difficult to reach and always used the excuse of how busy she was. What should have been a perfect evening was marred by the behavior my guests and I witnessed. read more
