If you're in Nashville, Indiana, you have to stop by the Brown County Winery tasting room on Main Street. Every single wine we tried was amazing and they have such a great variety. Sweet, dry, red, white, you name it. The prices are super reasonable too, which makes it way too easy to leave with a few bottles. What really made the visit awesome was the staff, especially Darlene. She is absolutely incredible. So kind, friendly, and knows everything there is to know about wine. You can tell she genuinely loves helping people find something they'll enjoy. My favorite moment was when she told us the bourbon barrel-aged wine was going to "give us a hug." She wasn't kidding. Stopped by Brown County Winery to do a tasting and we loved it. A great amount of wines to try and at a good price! I think it was only $5-$6 and you got to try a good amount of samples. I can't remember now but I think it was 5 or 6. The wine was delicious and it was not very busy so we got quick refills for the tasting. I will 100% go back here! Where I presently come from there are no free wine tastings, and it appears even nearby Oliver Winery no longer has free tastings, so enjoy the rare treat of a free wine tasting. The Catawba rosé and Cranberry Apple (non-spiced) were lovely, and the (presently Eclipse labelled) Blackberry will be a treat in the coming months. You can make your way dry to sweet as always, and good luck narrowing down your finds. We liked the quiet of our weekday visit, The labels look dated, but cover such yummy wine. Plain appearing (but perky!) Plum goes well with a basic frozen Costco lasagna, a good change from the usual Cabernet. Since fruit wine tastes like vacation after vacation is over, this is a great stop to find a souvenir. Hand crafted goods are also available (maybe the Gnaw Bone BCW too?), making BCW good fit for this ever crafty tourist town. We stopped here on Valentine's Day. We were passing by and a saw a sign out front that said wine tasting FREE! Really odd because most of the wineries charge for that now. There is a cute little gift shop where they have the wine tasting. The people that were working there were extremely nice and also informed me of a discount if we bought three bottles. We did take advantage of this. We also got a little extra perk because it was Valentine's Day, we received a double fudge dipped Oreo. It was delicious and came from Bloomington Chocolate Company. The winery said they do this every Valentine's Day. Still working on drinking the three bottles of wine but the next time we are down in that neck of the woods we will stop again. It has been a while since I visited this winery but I remember one specific thing about it. The ladies working knew how to handle a crowd. I couldn't believe how smooth and quickly they kept the tastings coming. They have a few specialty wines and most of the bottles are cheap! The only downfall for me is that most of the wines are on the sweeter side. On the other end of the spectrum, their port wines are among some of the cheapest I've ever seen. I did take a couple of stars off because it wasn't a memorable experience for me. While the tastings are free and there were plenty of people in there, the ladies didn't seem to want to talk about the wine at all. I've been to many wineries. I feel like one of the selling points is getting to know about the wine, the land, their story and how friendly the folks on the front lines are. I didn't get that here. The wines weren't memorable in my opinion either. Since they tend to be sweeter, all of that sugar hit my stomach and gave me a belly ache. If I was driving by again, I'd probably stop in to see what type of port wine they're slinging but I wouldn't expect a typical winery experience. read more

This was such a charming little visit. We were looking for a spot to grab a glass of wine, throw open our laptops and work for a few hours. Brown County Winery's large patio and easy-to-connect wifi hit the spot. Not to mention the delicious wine that kept us warm enough to work on a patio in 50degree temps. Before choosing a glass of wine or bottle, you can experience 6-8 of their wine samples via a complimentary wine sampling. Their offerings vary from sweet to dry with mulled wine thrown into the mix for the cooler months. I especially enjoyed their Merlot and opted for a glass. The mulled apple wine reminded me of "Apple Pie moonshine"...ah, take me back. The tasting room is cozy and features a horseshoe shaped bar for multiple tastings to occur at once. You're also able to see the wine production in the back through large glass windows. Parking is easy and Brown County Winery is only two miles down the road from the heart of Nashville, Indiana. I've been to their smaller shop in downtown Nashville many times and surprisingly, never to this location even though we drive by it going in and out of Nashville. My better half and I were in the area, headed towards Bloomington. He surprised me by pulling in the BC Winery. He knows how much I love stopping at the one in town so this was a pleasant surprise. We were greeted when we walked in and the staff was pleasant and kind. I was rushing a bit as I knew he wanted to go to an antique shop in Bloomington so this was a grab and go visit. Vista Red - has been a hands down must buy as long as I can recall. Vista White - had a taste and it went on the list. Apple Wine - we had bought some in town this summer and I wanted take a bottle home as part of a Christmas gift. If you like a sweeter, summery wine (that works year round)- I think you'll enjoy this one. Regretted now that we didn't take the Pinot Grigio too - but that leaves reason for another stop in the future :) Wine tasting wise - if you aren't sure what you like - ask the staff. We stopped here on a whim during our little YelpLouINvasion. We had planned on stopping at Bear Wallow Distillery but turns out they weren't going to be open for another hour and a half. But the beaming open sign hanging from the Brown County Winery was a beacon of joy! (Ok...it wasn't beaming. It was just the magical 4 letters "Open.") Tastings are complimentary, and you get to choose up to 8 wines to sample. There is a lot to choose from. I prefer semi-sweet to sweeter wines, and they have some tasty fruit wines. On top of that, they have plenty of dry options as well as some port and cordials. Something a little special on their part! The tasting hosts were super friendly and easily handled not only different tasting requests from several people in the same group, but they easily juggled and served an overflowing bar of thirsty wine lovers! I was impressed how smoothly it went and how quickly we were able to get our wine sippin' on! The bottles of wine are very affordable and they have a deal for $2 off when you buy three, which certainly sweetens the pot! This past weekend I ventured to Bloomington, Indiana for the first time with a group of girlfriends. Along the way we stopped at a couple of wineries, and Brown County Winery was one of them. And I really enjoyed it! It's a small winery, but there are plenty of wines to choose from. The menu is extensive, and it was right up my alley, since it included lots of sweet and fruit wines to sample. We each did a tasting, which was complimentary. You can choose 6-8 wines to sample, and of course I chose 8 - duh! Who would opt for two less wines? In addition to the tastings, we lucked out in that they were having an open house that we were able to take part in. They had the back portion of the winery opened up for walk-through and viewing, and they had complimentary snacks and festive holiday decor. We also each tried the Hot Mulled Wine and Spiced Red Wine (which was also served hot) and both were awesome! I would definitely recommend them both for the holiday season! The staff was friendly and inviting, and the guy who did our tasting answered any questions we had (specifically in regards to the differences in the ports and dessert wines). There's also a gift shop with lots of wine accessories, and local goods, in case you're in the market to pick up gifts during your visit. Pleasant server offered up some tastings... we only tried a couple... and were excited about some of the fruit wines to take home and create summer spritzers. Store was neat and cute. My wife and I stopped in for a free tasting (I didn't realize they had a tour as well!) since I like supporting local businesses and trying new wines is a nice way to spend time on a beautiful day! The winery is located in Gnaw Bone, just a few miles south east of Nashville (There is a second building in downtown Nashville that sells all their products as well.) Parking was easy in the lot out front, but the entrance does require going up a flight of stairs. Inside, there is a central counter where purchases and wine tastings take place. Around the room are a variety of items including consumables and wine related art and utensils. The wine tasting allows you to pick from their offerings, progressing from the dry wines, through semi-sweet, then to dessert/sweet and sparkling varieties. Although I do like a dry wine occasionally, during a tasting, my palate is drawn to the sweeter side. I picked up a bottle of semi-dry Traminette which would pair with cheese and fruit. I also picked up a bottle of the Cranberry Apple and a Strawberry wine for those summer days sitting out on the patio. What surprised me was the bottle of Old Barrel Port which was higher in alcohol content (20% vs 11% for most of their selections). I really liked the flavor of it as a sipping wine. I have used it before in cooking, but really enjoyed it on its own. If you are in the area, I recommend stopping by if you interested in expanding your tastes in wines. Love visit their tasting room in downtown Nashville and the winery in Gnaw Bone! I've been to Napa and tried the fancy wines at dozens of wineries, tried international wines in other countries, etc... but Brown County Winery's Vista Red will always be my favorite of all! I have a sweet tooth and I suppose I don't have a traditional wine palette--but this Indiana girl LOVES BC wines. The fact that they're pet friendly and the employees treat my pup like a special guest makes my day. He's always welcome in both locations and it gives us something fun to do in town even in the colder months that he can be included in. I don't think any of the other wineries in town offer free tastings either so that's just another reason to love them. It's just down the road from my childhood home where my parents still live so I try to visit often and always grab a bottle for special occasions/holidays. Their berry wines are great too, so be sure to visit and taste when you're in the area! read more

This may be my favorite Indiana/Kentucky winery. It is just a winery with tastings and some retails stuff- so no tours or anything like that but their wines are so good, the tastings are free, the staff is friendly and the prices are way better than most. We stopped in on the way to our cabin for a tasting Wednesday. We each tasted 7 wines free of charge. I liked 6 out of the 7 I tasted. The dry wines were surprisingly good. Daniel enjoyed their sweeter wines and we both liked the rose. We bought a couple of bottles to take home and some other items. My rating for this winery is based largely on the strength of their wines, which I don't think are particularly great. The building has been refurbished and decorated very well, and the friendly staff offers free tasting of pretty much whatever you want to try. They don't have their own vineyards, as far as I can tell, but buy up grapes and harvests in southern Indiana and then create their own vintages. Basically they have the regional sweet wines, some fruit wines, and then a few based on local varietals, such as Chambourcin. Since I detest sweet and fruit wines, the Chambourcin was what I was most interested in and ended up purchasing. It was a bit thin and not really that pleasing to me, with a bitter and somewhat vegetably finish--although it had some nice fruit. I want Indiana wines to be good, but these guys are way behind where Huber and Oliver are in terms of their more serious stuff. read more

We wish we had asked, but when I looked around I didn't see any cheese-- that would have been nice to have with. But other than that it was a nice experience. They also have some cool items in the gift shop area. My BF purchased a bottle holder that makes it look like a baseball player is holding a bat. Without a doubt, this winery deserves 5 stars. I mean, they provided free tastings! Can't get much better than that, my friends. Before I even entered the building, I was blown away by the scenery. Nestled in beautiful Brown County, Brown County Winery is definitely a site of beauty. The building itself is cute and cozy and offers an outdoor deck area where you can sit, relax and take in the views of the leaves. (Obviously I went during the wonderful fall season.) A few wine favorites were the Autumn Red Wine, cranberry apple wine and blackberry wine. Oh, and you can't forget the delicious mulled wine! I honestly didn't taste a wine there that I didn't enjoy. Yay! I'm writing about wine again! I love the upland wine trail, and Brown county winery has a special place in my heart. It's always great to have an excuse to visit Nashville. And to vet the stamp on the passport is a great one. My man and I just love going to the tasting room, then walking to the brew house, and having a bottle for home. The tasting room is ok. Busy, and small. It does its duty. For a more relaxed trip, go to the actual winery. Hell. Do both! I just always say, tip your taster and buy at least a bottle at each stop. We went to The tasting room in downtown Nashville. We were able to purchase the six pack of sweet wines that the winery offered. We also picked up a bottle of port. They boxed it up and even held our packages from other stores we had purchased that day, and held them behind the counter for us to come back and pick up later in the day. As our shopping day was coming to a close, we stopped back by and utilized the curbside pickup. A young lady assisted my husband to carry everything to our car. This is an incredible winery! They offer a free tasting of 6-8 of their wines and have a very knowledgeable staff. They also correctly recommend that you start with the dry wines first. Our hostess even greeting a nice couple who came in after us and then carefully steered the man away from trying the super sweet port first, knowing that you should enjoy a dry wine first! I honestly didn't try a bad wine there. I really liked the plum and apple wines, as well as the port wine. For less than $20, the port wine is a steal! I've never been a big fan of this winery for some reason. They do have free tastings so that's nice. They have a good selection of wine accessory shopping that's also nice. Im just not a fan of their wine. It usually leaves me sick. I also have not found the employees very friendly or helpful. The last two times we went here were because we had to for a wine trail stamp. I for sure would not go out of my way to come here again. I really appreciate a knowledgeable staff. And who can deny a complimentary tasting?! We stopped by their main location on State Road 46, as well as their little pop-up shop in Nashville. Both locations had their full menu to sample and purchase, great staff, and those wine-centric knick knacks that suburban moms go crazy about for kitchen decorations. The porch on the main location is gorgeous! Love all the mums and fall decor. The menu is good for what it is. Some wines shone more brightly than others. There's nothing "semi" about their semi-sweet wines; it's all sweetness, which I'm not super into. If I wanted to taste Welch's grape juice, I'd go buy that. However, they did have a slow cooker going of hot mulled wine, a combination of their Vista Red and their own spice blend, and it was delicious. I went home with the fixings to make my own hot mulled wine. Bae enjoyed their strawberry wine, too, so we grabbed that. I will say that having a staff member hovering around us at the counter was a little awkward and I felt self-conscious. Fun pit stop after an day of hiking at Brown County State Park. Convenient location off the main road. Wine tastings are free, you can try up to 8 or so wines. The wines are okay, what you would expect for Indiana wine. The tasting room is small. There's some outdoor seating, but it happened to be very buggy outside the day we went. If you're in the area, I think it's worth checking out, but not really worth going out of your way to visit. We still enjoyed sipping a glass of wine on the deck post-hike though! read more

I took the day off today to go with friends to Brown County to hike at Brown County State Park and to go wine tasting at Brown County Winery. After hiking for about an hour in close to 100 degree heat, we were ready to relax and explore this winery. While this winery does its own bottling, it doesn't actually grow any of the grapes or other fruit here. Tasting was free (yay!) and we tried some very nice wines. Came away with 6 bottles of wine -- most under $10! -- and some new wine glasses. Friendly people doing the pouring and got some history of the area. read more
