I was driving through Monterey on a Saturday afternoon and saw this food truck parked near the…read morewharf. I was craving Mexican food, and after scrolling through Yelp with nothing catching my eye, I figured this was a sign to pull over. They have a great menu with more than reasonable prices. I ordered the Papas Volcan along with a few chicken and beef tacos. The Papas Volcan consisted of french fries, jack cheese, carne asada (my choice of meat), jalapenos, and salsa. It also came with another sauce that wasn't mentioned on the menu. I'm not exactly sure what it was, it was slightly sweet and didn't ruin the flavor at all, but I'd suggest asking if you think you'd mind it. The tacos were wrapped in handmade tortillas with perfectly cooked meat that wasn't greasy. I preferred the chicken over the beef, but both were good. Their green salsa is great for flavor and the red salsa is good for heat. I added both and thought it was a perfect combo. I'm not a fan of too many taco spots in Monterey, so I'll definitely come back when I'm back in the area!

Monterey's Farmers Market (Alvarado)…read more I've never been to this vendor in the past, because the line was always SO LONG...but one day, it was short and we hopped in...and O.M.G. It was so worth it. We got a full chicken, potatoes and Brussels spouts, and lemme tell you...I literally think about it all the time. Words can not even explain how yummy their food is. Plus side, they take card!

The smells coming from the truck are amazing and mouth watering for sure! The line is usually a bit long, but definitely worth the wait. The sides offered are roasted potatoes and brussel sprouts. All cooking in grills in between the roasting chickens so they soak up all the chicken juices. I usually get the half chicken as it is affordable for me, $8.00. And I can get two meals from it. I have had the potatoes too, but they are honestly not the show of this food truck. The brussel sprouts look so good and I will be trying them next. The five stars is really for the chicken as it is perfectly roasted with a seasoned crispy skin and juicy meat. I defitinely come here for the chicken when I can and crave it. Be sure to hold the chicken upright after you purchase it as they give it to you in a bag on a paper container. You don't want any of the juices to run out of the bag. Next, I will get the brussel sprouts. And of course the chicken.

It's a huge farmers market-style event with just about everything you can think of, and it's always such a good time. I decided to stop by this barbecue spot because it immediately caught my eye. I'm all about my chicken legs, so I ordered the chicken legs with mac & cheese, greens, and cornbread. Another cool thing was seeing a father-son duo running the place, and being serviced by the young man himself--who is clearly putting his foot in this food--was pretty cool. The greens were moist and salty--just the way they're supposed to be. The chicken was melting in my mouth and falling right off the bone. Now, I'm a very picky mac & cheese girl, so discovering that theirs was actually pretty good was a nice surprise. I'm so happy to have found this needle in a haystack because there were so many options, and I'm glad I chose this one.

SCW and I stopped into El Cantato while staying in Monterey Bay. This place was a priority for me…read moreas it's all plant based and Mexican. Parking is sparse in front of the restaurant but paid parking is nearby. We entered and wow, the place was busy. Not overwhelming but lots of people in the indoor dining area enjoying their food. The menu is overheard and we decided what we wanted and ordered. The employees were kind and helpful, we probably were the only people that didn't speak Spanish well in the restaurant but that wasn't an issue, SCW got the number 2 combo, I got the mole. Also ordered an appetizer. Seated and waited about 10 minutes and our order came out. Everything was freaking amazing. Such great flavors and so fresh. Even SCW who doesn't necessarily gravitate towards Mexican food made nom nom nom sounds the whole time. The mole was incredible, the best I've ever had. The whole time we were here it was an endless stream of customers, even late lunch hour. SCW was impressed by the contrast stream of people coming in. We even walked around the wharf nearby for a while and drove past again and it was still packed with people. Do yourself a favor and visit El Cantato. I know I will.

It took our party (8 people) a while to decide as we were spoiled with choices. But we had time as it was pretty busy for a Friday around 1. I ended up getting the carne asada nachos and the aqua Fresca that they had that day (mango and watermelon I think). Both were absolutely spectacular. The picture included might not show the best scale but I had 2 others helping me to eat this plate and otherwise I would not have been able to finish it (even as a larger man). The crunchy jalapeños with the chips, beans and guacamole were the perfect balance. As a meat eater, the texture of the faux meat was a touch odd, but the flavor more than made up for it. The staff was helpful and attentive even as they were balancing supporting customers, answer phone orders, and taking regular orders. My wife and will definitely be stopping by here more often!!
