Saddest looking and tasting tacos ever.
    Topden T.

Long line, but the food is very unremarkable. Ordered lengua tacos and basically a few pieces of chopped meat sprinkled with onion. Dry and tasteless. Burrito was worse. French fries were fried in cheap unhealthy oil.

This is most of the menu. So many selections

This place is really good. Went here last night. The cabeza burrito was fantastic. A little on the spicy side. But it was still good. I still have my favorite place to go. But this place is a good alternative.

Best Taco-Truck-Ever, at least that we've found so far.

This is how street food is supposed to taste! We spent the morning in the touristy parts of Monterey and didn't really get too much good food out of the deal. We were driving down the road, when we saw this food truck. I plowed on the brakes and squeezed into a tiny parking spot. Man, am I glad we did. I wasn't hungry, but my wife got three different tacos and all three of them were delicious! Their salsa is spicy, with really intricate flavors, which only made the seasoned beef/chicken/pork taste even better. Wonderful! Highly recommend these guys! We ran into a guy who said he grew up in Monterey and said this was one of his favorites but didn't know of any other places to get good street food in Monterey. El Volcan may vary their location around town for all I know, so give them a call and ask them where they are at (if you can't find them a the 848-872 Del Monte Avenue location). Apparently, they have at least three trucks, since this one is #3. [ Did you hear about the map-maker from Arizona, who got fired from his job? He had no sense of Yuma. ]

Barbacoa and Lengua (tongue) Flavorless tacos! So disappointed

Every time I drive by I always wanted to try. So, today my family and I decided to eat. First of all, the service is really bad. After I paid for my bad fortune, two costumers asked for something and El Volcan personal just ignored them. Both clients left furious! Second, they take forever!!!!!! Third, they count the meat, OMG! We ordered pretty much all meats for the tacos but head (cabeza) & chicken. Every meat was serve in 1 small tortilla with a little bit and i mean a miniature of meat. Which are flavorless!!!!! Tried already this place but NO planning to come back.

Service great. Food meh. Ordered bacon wrapped hotdog... bun was soggy and so was the bacon. The tacos were nothing to write home about.

Parking is sparse in front of the restaurant but paid parking is nearby. We entered and wow, the place was busy. Not overwhelming but lots of people in the indoor dining area enjoying their food. The menu is overheard and we decided what we wanted and ordered. The employees were kind and helpful, we probably were the only people that didn't speak Spanish well in the restaurant but that wasn't an issue, SCW got the number 2 combo, I got the mole. Also ordered an appetizer. Seated and waited about 10 minutes and our order came out. Everything was freaking amazing. Such great flavors and so fresh. Even SCW who doesn't necessarily gravitate towards Mexican food made nom nom nom sounds the whole time. The mole was incredible, the best I've ever had. The whole time we were here it was an endless stream of customers, even late lunch hour. SCW was impressed by the contrast stream of people coming in. We even walked around the wharf nearby for a while and drove past again and it was still packed with people. Do yourself a favor and visit El Cantato. I know I will.

An incredible find for vegan Mexican food!…read more What a gem! El Cantaro is one of those rare vegan restaurants that delivers authentic Mexican flavors in fully plant-based form--and they absolutely nail it. As someone always on the hunt for vegan options that don't compromise on flavor, I was thrilled to find a whole menu of Mexican classics done right. We went all in: nachos, tamales, taquitos, and the fajitas in both plant-based chicken and steak. Every single dish was a hit. The veggie enchiladas in green sauce were a standout--truly amazing. Honestly, you don't miss the meat at all; the textures and seasonings are spot-on. The real showstopper was the chamoyada for dessert--a refreshing pineapple icee layered with juicy mango chunks and that signature sweet-tangy-spicy chamoy. The perfect happy ending to an already wonderful meal. If you're vegan, vegetarian, or just curious to try something different, this place is well worth the trip to Monterey. I thoroughly enjoyed every bite and can't wait to come back next time!

I mentioned breakfast burritos and as quick as that, the kids forgot all about those crappy waffles. We stopped in and ordered a variety of burritos and bowls. Everyone, including my pickiest 11 yr old, were satisfied with their meals. We had ordered extra burritos to enjoy later in the day as well, but some brazen seagulls nipped our afternoon snacks while we were combing the beach for sea glass! Ar least we got some good seaglass, right? Deliciously fresh, modestly priced, dare I say best kept secret? Reminds me of this wonderful multi-generational place I used to visit when I was a grad student in Santa Barbara. It's gone now, and I never expected to come across another establishment like that, so I was surprised that El Charrito awoke that part of me after so many years. Love this place and I can't wait to enjoy their food again!

I buy for him and my son and they'd always get skinny burritos that doesn't fill them. So today was a success as far as burrito size is concerned. Service is on and off- sometimes you get more food sometimes not. Sometimes you get a friendly, helpful staff and other times they're grumpy. This is strictly a to-go place and open for breakfast and lunch. No seating so most people would pick up their food and eat in the parking lot, or drive away someplace else.

You can tell it's been a local favorite for decades--the hand-scrawled signs and slogans everywhere give it so much character. They've been around for 40 years! The Blackened Chicken sandwich is what they're famous for, and it lives up to the hype as I've been ordering it since middle school. It's got a solid kick, and that buttermilk garlic dressing they use is addictive. If you're leaning more toward the taqueria side, the Blackened Shrimp Tacos and the Steak Fajitas are the move. I also get the House Burrito a lot as it's one of their famous specialties. Everything feels fresh and grilled, not greasy, which is a nice change of pace. The service is fast and friendly and the portions are huge for the price. It's a small, no-frills spot inside, but they have plenty of seating and a steady stream of locals picking up takeout which is always a good sign. Every meal comes with chips and salsa! Pro tip: They're closed on Sundays, so make sure you get your fix during the week. Definitely the best spot in PG for a quick, high-quality lunch that won't break the bank.
