I was driving through Monterey on a Saturday afternoon and saw this food truck parked near the wharf. I was craving Mexican food, and after scrolling through Yelp with nothing catching my eye, I figured this was a sign to pull over. They have a great menu with more than reasonable prices. I ordered the Papas Volcan along with a few chicken and beef tacos. The Papas Volcan consisted of french fries, jack cheese, carne asada (my choice of meat), jalapenos, and salsa. It also came with another sauce that wasn't mentioned on the menu. I'm not exactly sure what it was, it was slightly sweet and didn't ruin the flavor at all, but I'd suggest asking if you think you'd mind it. The tacos were wrapped in handmade tortillas with perfectly cooked meat that wasn't greasy. I preferred the chicken over the beef, but both were good. Their green salsa is great for flavor and the red salsa is good for heat. I added both and thought it was a perfect combo. I'm not a fan of too many taco spots in Monterey, so I'll definitely come back when I'm back in the area! read more

This is how street food is supposed to taste! We spent the morning in the touristy parts of Monterey and didn't really get too much good food out of the deal. We were driving down the road, when we saw this food truck. I plowed on the brakes and squeezed into a tiny parking spot. Man, am I glad we did. I wasn't hungry, but my wife got three different tacos and all three of them were delicious! Their salsa is spicy, with really intricate flavors, which only made the seasoned beef/chicken/pork taste even better. Wonderful! Highly recommend these guys! We ran into a guy who said he grew up in Monterey and said this was one of his favorites but didn't know of any other places to get good street food in Monterey. El Volcan may vary their location around town for all I know, so give them a call and ask them where they are at (if you can't find them a the 848-872 Del Monte Avenue location). The fish (tilapia) tacos were pretty good, flavor- and ingredient-wise. The grilled onions (on the side) are a nice touch, the tortillas tasted home-made, and I liked both salsas. But they were too messy to be eaten without a fork and napkins, which they didn't provide. And my "to go" container was a paper plate. Better service and I'd give them 4 stars. read more

The pastor tacos were perfect, I wasn't even particularly starving but decided to give it a shot because it looked popular. I'm glad I did. The tortillas were homemade, salsa was nice and spicy, and the grilled onions gave it extra touch of flavor. The pastor was tastier than the asada. Very good food. There were 2 folks working and 1 person ahead of us. We ordered 2 asada tacos plus rice and beans and 3 lingua tacos. The guy makes the tortillas right in front of us, very fresh. Great prices! We only paid $12 for our food and it took 6 minutes. There were others that said it was slow, not sure what their reference point was? We will definitely come back. I've been wanting to try this taco truck for a while now and I wish I had not . First of all be careful when they ring you up because the girl overcharged me so when I questioned her she repeated the order and said ok and gave me the look like give me the money ... I literally took my calculator out (phone) and did the math and showed her she then said the 5 dollar difference was tax ... I added tax and she was like ok and re ring me up and got what I had told her . I ordered a plain hot dog but got home and it had every topping on it .... I think they made the wrong one but regardless it was soggy and messy. The fries with the asada on them were ok but the sauce they put on was kind of sweet so it kind of grossed me out . The burritos have gone down hill. Very bland super burrito, just carne asada, rice, and pinto beans. The burritos used to be pretty good when the older man was working the kitchen and young man worked the register. It's hard to beat Taco Azteca in Glendale, CA but the El Volcan truck has satiated the taste with their asada tacos. My only suggestion for them is to ditch the homemade tortillas for prepackaged. Homemade tortillas on a taco truck add to the already slow serving times. The tortas are ridiculous!!!!! The bread is soft and fresh, super tasty. Didn't like the tacos, smallest tortillas I've ever seen, the burritos are a much better bang for your buck, BUT adding the tip into my bill really pisses me off, I had already put a tip in the tip jar they have at the counter. My bill came to $15.44 and they added a $3 tip to that. So I guess they think the food is worth a 20% tip. No thanks, won't do that again. read more

The people that work here aren't going to win any congeniality contest but the food is awesome. I will start with the shrimp tacos. Get them. Seriously they are awesome. The tortilla was made fresh and all the ingredients were fresh. Shrimp can easily get over cooked but they did a great job and they were cooked perfectly. The most underwhelming food truck I have ever been to. -Horrible Service -Wrong Order -Below Average Food The young girl (maybe about 10 or 11 yrs old) at the register taking orders overcharged us and didn't even know all the items on the menu --which is why she claimed she charged us wrong. Additionally, the tax was overcharged, but the young girl had such a hard time taking our order and overcharging us that we didn't bother correcting her yet again. The food looks NOTHING like it does on the side of the truck. In fact, this food looked as sloppy as Burger King and was 7/11 quality at best. Once we got our food, it turned out both our orders were wrong (no surprise), but since it took us nearly 10 minutes to order just 2 items, we didn't want to waste any more time.
