Simple food with very good service from very caring waiter who double-checked that each food item I chose to consume was allergen-free. Thank you!! For soy-allergy or intolerant folks, be very careful when order as vegetable oil is used without another option. I had a cheese quesadilla with boiled beans & cinnamon coffee (and safe-no soy!). Everything was delicious & hot and coffee came with refills. My friend had a super burrito which was (indeed) super! He took half of it home since he had all the chips & salsa to himself. Location is convenient in downtown Monterey, so one can park anywhere & easily walk to the restaurant. There is street & onsite parking available. Restaurant appeared clean, but not tidy. We didn't use the restrooms. My spoon was dirty & server placed it into the coffee. This is the only reason that the restaurant lost a star. read more

I gave it four stars because we felt rushed by the waiter to pay our bill considering my wife and I in deep conversation in an almost empty restaurant. My family walked here with our two kids after a fun day out in Monterey/Fisherman's Wharf. Terrible choice. We have a stroller for our 4mo old son. We might as well have walked in with a troll from the way the staff looked at us. We gave been happy to park the stroller in a corner, or outside, we even asked the staff at the entrance (only 2 tables occupied at 5pm on a Sunday, so they were all aggregated at the entrance chatting) if they have a kids menu and if we could come in with a stroller. They walked us in and then it occurred to them that this big plastic 4wheel cart has to go somewhere... The staff didn't come back to our table for 10min until we waived them down. I imagine they thought we'd just leave or maybe they forgot about us? They brought half the drink order after another 5min (2 cans of coke?). We wanted to place our order, but the person with the drinks said they'd get our waitress. Another 5 min wait and another can of coke came and we finally got to place our orders.... man, this was an exhausting experience. The kids food were from-frozen chicken nuggets and the al pastor was ~1/3 gristle. The food came out pretty quick, but it wasn't good. The al pastor burrito didn't have much meat and was flavorless, the asada fries were soggy and coated in a bland mayo sauce. The staff continued to just ignore us until my wife got up and just left with our baby to head to the car. I waived down another staff member to get the check. It wasn't too expensive, though $60 for 4 small plates, one of which was chicken nuggets. TL;DR: Bad service for bad food. read more

OK here we are in Monterey and we're both thinking we want seafood. So I said why don't we try out tacos Gobernador (shrimp tacos) over at La Casa del Sazón. It was really really good. My wife and I both ordered the same plate and we each finished everything. They brought out a mild salsa where we could add to it in case we wanted a little more spicy. And that way we could adjust the heat level. Because the tacos were not very spicy at all to begin with, which was perfect for us so we could adjust accordingly so these tacos crispy cheesy shrimpy goodness. They put a little coleslaw on the side, but it's more Mexican style without the mayonnaise. I also really enjoyed my drink which had cucumber and lime. I am very happy and I'm looking forward to the next time we come back. I forgot to mention that I also thought that the bill was a good value about sixty dollars for everything and we each had three tacos loaded with shrimp. This restaurant is also in a very nice location with a private parking lot and in walkable distance to the Monterey shore! We love their Molcajete. We haven't ordered anything else from here. The medium is pretty spicy so be a little conservative on choice of spiciness. We love spicy food and medium is almost a little too spicy but we always order the medium . They are a little on the pricey side but good. Hands down, the best Mexican restaurant in the peninsula. I personally have heard so many good things about this restaurant, as they have various locations in the peninsula. I have never tried it till now. I am boy have I been missing out! Our server was kind and friendly. Right away, he took our order for our beverages, in which I ordered an Horchata. They Horchata itself was delicious, and definitely not artificial. I went ahead and ordered the quesabirria tacos. My boyfriend ordered some Asada Gorditas, and my parents ordered their famous Molcajete, and added shrimp. Our food was served to us right away and looked super appealing. These Quesabirria tacos definitely did not disappoint. The taco it was super crispy and fall of shredded birria and cheese. Both my parents and my boyfriend love their seasoning, and how rich the food was. The flavoring of everything was just phenomenal. Disappointed there was not much rice & beans on the plate. Chips & salsa came with the meal and I had a Mexican Coca-cola. Service was good and did not have to wait too long for my food. Ambiance was ok-music not too loud and had a few diners in for lunch. Price for my meal was extremely expensive for a combo lunch plate-my total bill was over $30 which included a $5.00 tip. Slightly cheaper if you pay cash. They also impose a 4% maintenance fee??? I don't think I'll be back anytime soon-there are a lot more other Mexican restaurants with better taste and value for your money. read more

Staff was really friendly. I ordered a Coke Zero, and unfortunately it was flat. I let my waitress know she could remove it from the table and she brought me a canned soda, and told me I could have another since I had originally asked for a fountain drink. The place is really clean and the music for the theme. The only thing I would say is that it did take a little long to get our food after ordering. Went to their restaurant in Monterey last night before we attended the Jerry Seinfeld show at the Golden State Dinner. The food was OK, not as good as we get in Carmel Valley, the service was terrible. Our waitress never looked down at our table when she passed by; I had to wave her down or speak loudly to get her attention to get salsa. C'mon, this is a Mexican restaurant, and you don't automatically include salsa with the food? It took forever to get the food, and we could not get a refill of the few chips and salsa provided. Yes, I know they charge additionally for a refill, not a problem, I just want more. The waitress was awful. Then, to add insult to injury, I got a text at about 10 pm last night, asking if I was using the credit card I used at the restaurant to buy $250 worth of goods at Walmart. It took forever, again, to get the check back after I provided a credit card, the same one used at Walmart by someone else. I'm very suspicious of this timing with my card. I will never return to this restaurant; the service is awful, and they are so tight about offering anything additional. I had to close the card and now need a new one. What a hassle. Very disappointed and unhappy about my credit card. read more
