I rode a new to me e-bike to the shop, to get some: diagnostics on it, get a mirror and have it mounted on it, buy a water caddy and have it mounted on it and get some questions specific to e-bikes answered. They did also this and answered a bike frame fit question that I have never managed to get a correct answer to. The visit was a win and worth the shop labor and time. A bike shop that wouldn't even let me bring my bike inside? The staff here is really something.

Purchased xc ski boots & bindings in January. The right boot was somewhat tight. They told me to use it, as it should stretch with use, and if not I could bring back for manipulation. When I went back to the store , I was told they couldn't do that. I think they fed me a line to make a sale. On top of that I was treated very rudely. I will never do business with them again nor would I ever recommend them for anything. read more

Three strikes: 1. Every time I go in that shop, since leaving a not-great Google review for helping me with a warranty replacement on a cracked Felt frame, I feel like I am bothering the people working there. Persona non grata. Dead silence while I look for whatever I need. Customer service was never great to begin with. They had one really good mechanic for a while, then he must have gone on to better things. A lot of local businesses give you a great feeling when you walk in the door-they are glad to see you, appreciate your business, etc. Not this shop. Choice for good shops is limited in Ithaca. I'm honestly sad that I don't feel better giving this place business, which I only do now in a rare pinch when I need something small and quick. No repairs anymore from me. 2. They didn't tighten the clamp enough fastening an integrated shifter and brake setup to the handlebar on my mountain bike, after a brake bleed (routine maintenance for hydraulic disc brakes). Near the end of the next race, which just so happened to be a qualifier for National XC Championships, after a few hours of racing over a fast course with not-too-techy trails, a bolt worked loose and the shifter fell off the bar. I managed to skid to a stop and very quickly rigged something up in the absence of that bolt, to keep my shifter from going into my front spokes. It was near the end of the last lap. I won the race and qualified for Nationals, but let's just say I was not a very happy camper. If you pay for a service, you expect it to be competent. If you are any sort of bike racer, it's that much more important that your bike is well maintained, which includes tightening bolts to spec, so that you don't end up as road pizza or trail paste. It shouldn't matter whether the brake is Shimano or Magoura, a good mechanic can do a bleed on either. 3. A couple years later, another routine brake bleed was needed for another bike getting it ready to go to a race. Didn't have much time or choice, so I gave them another chance. I picked up the bike before leaving to drive to Kansas for a 200-mile ultracross race there. I was in a hurry to get home and finish packing so didn't jump on to quickly test it out/inspect. My mistake. They failed to notice the brake needed to be completely replaced. The brake started to leak fluid over the front rotor by the time I got home from the bike shop. A GREAT shop in Kansas was able to overnight a replacement brake and take the bike in to fix immediately when we got to Emporia the day before the race. Incidentally, a few years ago, I used to carpool to races with a fellow female racer and pro who was sponsored by Giant. She came to this shop on a Monday needing repairs to her bike, with another race coming the weekend following, for which we were both registering. The shop could not be bothered to help get her bike fixed up in time for her next race, but said they would get it into their pipeline and it would take a few weeks. This shop is an authorized Giant dealer, and this was a Giant bike and a Giant-sponsored rider. She brought the bike in as soon as she possibly could, and was too polite to push back. I've been there a few times for ski-related things, and have found the shop to be staffed by a bunch of condescending and rude middle-aged gentlemen. You'd think that, given all the negative reviews that mention things along these lines, they would address the issues, but I can certainly say that after my recent experiences things haven't changed. I mean is it too much to ask to make your customers feel like they're not wasting your time? I'll be avoiding this place going forward, and will just take my business up to Syracuse. read more

The Cayuga Ski and Cyclery saga started in January 2020. I brought a shiny, new Surly Ice Cream Truck frame set in for a buildout. We discussed my wants and needs, carefully distinguishing between the two, and my budget. After some email exchanges, we decided on a buildout and ordering of parts. The build ended up being ~$500 over budget but I paid and then the radio silence began. Calls and emails went unreturned until mid-April when they wanted me to select pedals, a set post, and grips for an additional $144. Since the snow season came and went, I inquired about a 29+ wheelset for the trails. 3 weeks later, the build manager said it would be ~$900 and that I should consider sourcing them myself on "eBay". What? Fast forward to May, that's right May, buildout is done. Five months for a winter-ready fat tire bike that arrived in May...unacceptable IMO. I should have asked for my frameset and money back. Fast forward a few months, June. I ended up building a commuter bike and had a loose chainring. I didn't have the tool, a BB22, needed to tighten the direct-mount chainring so I called Cayuga Ski and Cyclery and they assured me they could tighten it. I brought my bike down from Cornell mid day and the mechanic didn't understand how the chainring attached to the bike. I said it was a Raceface Cinch and it is tightened to the crank arm using a BB22 tool. He didn't understand "why it didn't attach like the spider ones do". He then asked "how I got a bike right now, since Q doesn't have any in stock". I politely said that this is a 5 minute job and I can help if need be. The response was that I could leave my bike with Cayuga and they would work on it in 2-3 weeks. Pretty frustrating since someone told me I could bring it down the night before. In the end, he tried to sell me a BB22 to tighten it myself, but was out of stock, so I walked away with a loose chainring and less confidence in Cayuga Ski and Cyclery than I had arriving, which from the above paragraph wasn't much. Save yourself being talked down to by incompetent mechanics and head to see Steve Gelb at Old Goat or Glenn Swan at Swan Cycles for all your cycling needs. read more

This is the place you go to when it's an emergency and you don't have time to drive to a decent bike shop in Geneva or Syracuse. I had to interact with them a few times while I was living in Ithaca, and I was always disappointed. Once, I had an issue with one of my shifters a couple of days before a race. The owner inspected my bike for less than 10 seconds and told me there was no way of fixing it and they would have to replace the shifter. He also told me they had one available but it would take them a few days to do it so I would have to miss my race. The same day I drove to the bike shop on Geneva. They opened the shifter and figured out that the problem was a cable that was stuck. They replaced the cable in 15 minutes and charged me 10$. The manager thinks too much of himself and his opinions. When I wanted to buy a bicycle he tried to persuade me that I needed a completely different kind of bike. I do appreciate good advice, but in this case he had no idea what he was talking about. He though I didn't know anything about cycling and started giving me poor advice after knowing me for less than 5 minutes. I would not let them do anything serious on my bike, and I would never buy a bike with them. At first I thought that I was being too picky. But after interacting with other members of the local cycling community, I realized that a lot of people travel to Geneva to buy and service their bikes, because the Cayuga Ski and Ciclery is a terrible business. They get two stars instead of one because the building is nice, and they have a decent selection of bikes and equipment. read more

This was my first visit with a friend, and the store rocks! Rob and Phil helped me get two of many bikes repaired. Thanks to your incredible work, I was able to ride my favorite bike this week and break my personal weekly record with 190 miles of smooth sailing. They did such a good job on my bike that it actually feels more stable and rides better than when I bought it brand new last year from a store in Lewisburg PA. Took my new skis and boots down to get them fitted and adjusted and the middle-aged man I talked to could not have been more rude or condescending. He didn't even so much as allow me to try on my boots but decided they weren't the right size (they are). I'm a grown adult and he asked me if my mom bought them for me..... excuse me??? I left because he was so unreasonable and unbearably disrespectful. What's more is I relayed this story to a friend and she said the times that she brought in her bike to get it fixed they failed to fix it right and she had to do it herself. The people here are strikingly incompetent and rude as hell. These yelp reviews speak for themselves. I have to concur with two yahoo reviews that I read recently for this shop. I definitely felt like I was inconveniencing them when I went to buy a new bike and pick it up. Not only did no salesperson mention that with a new bike purchase, you get a big discount on accessories, they wouldn't offer the discount a few days later. When I went to pick up the bike, I must have stood there for about 10 minutes, with salespeople walking around me and all of them saying, "oh someone else will be with you soon". Meanwhile everyone else is either tinkering on a bike or they go ask someone else who can in after me if that person needs help. It would have taken about 30 seconds to help me. The bikes that they do offer are nice bikes, and the store is beautiful. Just the attitude is odd, and it's hard to know who is waiting on whom in this store. It was worth the $700 I spent to see what type of business this is, I bought all my accessories elsewhere. read more

Snooty to the bones. One time I went there to fix my bike, I left my helmet on the handle. When I came back to pick it up, it was gone. I asked for it, and they retrieved it from a large grey trash can in the work area. Another time, I sent my son's bike. When I took the bike home, I noticed the kickstand was gone. I guess they hate us for some reason?! I think this is a good place for you if you are a hardcore bike enthusiast willing to spend $$$$. read more

I went to Cayuga Ski and Cyclery to figure out a bike issue and was confronted with impolite staff that were completely uninterested in helping if I wasn't going to pay them to do all the work. Salespersons walked all around, seemingly with nothing to do but too busy to help me. I went with an older bike that, in the end, had a broken axel, a problem I realized with no help to the staff at Cayuga Ski and Cyclery. Needed a tune up for my hybrid before a weeklong, 350 mile bike camp trip. Old Goat and Glenn Swan were backed up so I brought it here. Made it clear the exact calendar date I'd need the bike ready, and they agreed. Day before my trip, when I hadn't heard from them, I called: bike had never been touched. I get flats a lot and this place is close by. I've had flats fixed by them twice for under $15 with no problem. This time, however, I brought them my bike and the guy asked me to leave it there. I reiterated I just wanted the flat fixed. He ends up charging me $45 for a new tire and tube somehow and sends me on my way. The next day my bike tire is flat again when I go in to my shed. I bring it back asking how this is possible given that they just replaced everything and I literally rode the bike 2 minutes home. He gives me an attitude, tells me to get out of his store, and now I'm out $45 and a rideable bike. You can't even trust them to change a bike tire. This place is absolute garbage, go to the bike store on the commons instead. read more

After reading some earlier reviews, I hesitated before bringing in my road bike today. I'm glad I ignored the reviews, because Anthony and the other service guys couldn't have been nicer or helped more. I came in with a busted 10 speed shifter and left 20 minutes later with a new shifter nicely installed at a price much lower than I expected. Best of all, nobody tried to sell me anything I didn't really need to keep rolling. Five stars! read more

I am new to town, from Portland Oregon. I am used to using my bike everyday, and while the area isn't as accessible to bikes, I was still anxious to get my bike fixed up from the move and the other work that I was putting off. I took it into Cayuga Ski & Cyclery even though it looked expensive I figured I would at least be getting quality work done. I took it in before 4th of July, and I was informed it would be a long wait - I agreed again figuring on the cost of quality (time and money). When I dropped it off I mentioned that I was seeing cracking around the spokes on my rear wheel, and I would like to talk about that once they take a look around and see if there is anything else that needed fixing. I come in on the 15th or so to pick up my bike. Took forever for find my bike - once they found it. They informed me that my front spokes look fine. I said there must be a mix up - I needed the back wheel looked at. Sure enough, we took it out and there are the cracks. I ask the fellow working if he can email me some options - sure enough the options are emailed. Up to this point, I am disappointed, but understanding. Shit happens. Then, I get a phone call. The fellow left a message saying, I am not sure how you didn't notice, your back tire is practically see-through. This is when I was done. After mis-quoting the time, not performing the work that I asked, not noticing the bike tire on the first go around when I asked them to check for such things, and the snark in the message. I wanted to pick up my bike and be done. I called back and said as much. They now have the hustle on, as I imagine they must go through this exercise on the regular. My bike should be ready with new tire and wheel in two days. My boyfriend and I share a car (another reason why I like having my bike not in the shop), and one afternoon when my friend and I were at lunch I dropped by and paid for it, and let them know that my boyfriend would be picking it up. I spoke to the owner, and he rang me up for the full price for everything. Also, whispered that he would talk to the fellow who gave me lip. Too little, too late. When my boyfriend went to pick it up - it apparently took two times looking in the back; them asking him if he got a phone call that it was ready; and one more trip to the back before the bike being revealed. A week ago, as I went to pump up my tires for the first time, I noticed that my front tire had been changed. For some reason, they decided to seek revenge on me for receiving their shitty customer service...I will NEVER take my money or bike in that shop again. Apparently I am not the only one whose property has been stolen or mishandled in this shop. Buyer beware. Quality means something to me, and I am willing to pay more to receive good work and support talented, intelligent people. I will not support a business which must have a business model of making customers feel too stupid to go somewhere else. There was one good guy working in the shop there, and if you are reading this, please open your own shop, don't go down with that stinking pile. read more

Also, they gave my daughter some pointers for bicycle safety which impressed me. She got a cool helmet there (half price) that she actually wears. Thumbs up from this nurse/Mom! I'm an avid and experienced cyclist. I own and use a bike-stand to do most of my own repairs and have been riding in Ithaca since 2005. I've visited every bicycle store in town and this is the last shop I would recommend. If you need bike parts or accessories, know exactly or close to what you want, then shopping here is OK. Other reviewers here are dead-on about the customer experience and the lackadaisical attitude of the employees (salespeople & techs). If you go in there and know what you are doing/saying you get a completely different experience (and bill) than if you go in with questions and concerns.IIt also largely depends on which employee your are talking to. I've had one decent experience there, and one bad experience there with the rest being "Meh". The selection of parts and bikes is usually good, but sometimes not, depending on the time of year you get there. I can't speak to the price range and type of bikes they have since that's for everyone to decide for themselves, but I recall the bikes being priced reasonably. If they are convenient for you to get to, you know what you want, and you scrutinize your bill for any real 'work", they can be acceptable. But I would recommend spending your time elsewhere. "The Bike Rack" and "The Outdoor Store" are acceptable shops with respectable customer service. Swann Cycle on Mt. Pleasant Road is the best bike shop in the Southern tier if you don't mind waiting (because the place is always so packed). read more

I brought my bike in for help after its gear-shifting was increasingly loud and grinding, and the handlebar squeaked like a mouse. I was greeted promptly and it was suggested that just the standard tune-up would be a good start, and they'd be in touch about any further repairs needed. They looked at it very promptly and called to say that a couple cables and housing were needed. It was ready within 12 hours and I consider the charge ($90 -- $60 for the tune-up and the rest for parts) very reasonable. My bike is shifting like buttah, the handlebar doesn't squeak, and I wish I'd brought it in 2 years ago!! read more

I've been to this shop on numerous occasions, it's never been my favorite but parking in Collegetown for the Bike Rack isn't always ideal.However, I've yet to come out of this shop with a good experience. My biggest issue is the dude who seems to be the owner. He talks down to his customers as if he's this all knowing bike guru. It's extremely irritating to be at a place where the person helping you makes you feel like an idiot even though it's clear this guy doesn't know a thing about a mountain bike. The other guy's who work there all seem to be nice, but I wont be going ever again. On top of this, they have multiple mechanics and take weeks to do simple stuff. I was told it would take 8 days to press a head tube in... another shop did it in an hour... Hope this guy changes his attitude for the sake of his business. read more

I brought an old Felt here for warranty replacement that I had originally bought from them years ago. I'm a racer who gets my parts and work done elsewhere on my four bikes. The only reason I went to their shop this time was because the frame was under warranty and had cracked. To begin with, they charged me a total of $90 for labor after telling me there would be a $65 build fee for putting the used parts on the new frame. The extra $25 was a "labor fee" tacked on to my receipt with no explanation. I'm sure this was because the bike needed some new parts and I opted to get them from my usual mechanic for wholesale price (sponsorship!). This was the "you didn't buy all your new parts from us" fee. I did have them order a new headset for me because of compatibility issues with the frame. That ended up being $10 more than the price quoted to me. The other new parts I got from them also ended up costing more money than they told me. What a surprise. My front derailleur was also incompatible so I needed a new one and got it from MY mechanic. There were still compatibility issues. I got tired of dealing with these clowns and told them to finish what they could with the bike and I'd pick it up. They left the saddle on crooked with the post above the minimum insertion point and six inches too high, the rear brake cable slack, and the headset completely loose. The total bill was $178.00. I expected costs in the area of $135 from what they told me oreviously (I'd kept an itemized list). They've lost my business forever. If you need anything for your bikes, go to Swan Cycles. I'll never understand why the ski & cyclery moved from their location by the commons (where the running store is now). If anything, it's harder to find a place to park now on the street. They've still got the same great selection of skiing and biking stuff though, so it's worth checking out. The sell different brands than the Bike Rack up in collegetown (which is expensive), and I'm still enjoying the last bike I bought here (a hybrid, perfect for Ithaca's lack of paved roads in some places). read more

So today I needed a place to buy a inner tune for my new hybrid bike so like any other person I yelped bike shops in ithaca and this place came up I had read a few reviews about the place being snooty and rude but also read some about how helpful the staff was so off the bat I had mixed reviews of the place so I got there number off yelp called the place up. When I had called there was no answer ofcourse the answering machine came on and told me there business hours. 10am to 7pm mon through fri. I got to thinking strange maybe I should go down there and check it out so I walked down there and went up to the store the hours were posted on the door it said 10am to 7pm mind you it was 2:00pm on a Monday I went to the door and surely it was locked to be honest I really would give it a zero but yelp won't let me if you need any cycle equipment I would go to the bike shop in the commons read more

The 4-star rating reflects the service I've received by personnel other than the one I'm writing about here. I've been taking my bike to Cayuga Ski & Cyclery for about 3 years now for general tune-ups and minor fixes, even though I didn't buy my bike from them. A couple of the staff have always been very courteous and helpful and always have extended an invitation to return with any problems whatsoever. So I've been doing that over the years. Last year they fixed a bad squeak in my brakes. I initially brought my bike to the shop this past Saturday for the same thing, a bad squeak. The very nice young man tested it and we both heard no squeak. He said I should come back if the squeak were to return. It did; and I returned to the shop this past Monday. I was met by another staff member who was not the least bit helpful and he was condescending and snide. The shop had corrected a squeak in my brakes the past year, but this man told me there was nothing they could do about it and basically that they can't do an upgrade to a downgraded department store bike. He was rude and uncaring and had no interest in helping me whatsoever. I will not be returning because of him. This should be no reflection on the other personnel since they have always been courteous, friendly and knowledgeable over the years. read more

My friend recommended I try out their vacuum fit ski boots! This is amazing technology that we have right here in town...and there is no waiting around, it can be done on site! This is the first rating I have ever given and it would take a lot for me to waste my time doing this if I did not feel strongly about my experience at Cayuga Ski & Cyclery. I recently bought a used bike and went there on a Friday early afternoon December 2015 to see about buying a helmet. I have not been on a bike in years and was really motivated to buy my first helmet but did not know anything about them. The store was completely empty when I walked in. Nice looking shop but it takes me a minute to find the helmet rack so I go over and stand there not knowing anything and kind of waiting to see if someone would help me. Some guy comes out from the back after several minutes and walks directly to the floor cash register, pushes some buttons, sees me, then walks into the back again. No words exchanged. The store is dead quite. So I start to just try on 7 or 8 helmets trying to guess what brand, size, style, etc. that I needed. Turns out, I find out later, that I was trying on sport ski helmets! I could see the guy in the back working on a bike and he was paying me zero attention; not even looking up. I was in the shop a full 15-20 minutes fumbling with everything before I walked away in sheer disgust and bewilderment. Why in the world am I not getting any service? I ask myself. It's Christmas season, the darn store is empty, I'm acting like a motivated shopper, etc. I ask myself is this because I am an African-American man? Well honestly I'm not sure about that after reading the poor reviews concerning this store's customer service treatment of some of the other people here. Normally, I think people that leave one star reviews for anything are idiots but if I could give a zero in this case I would. My money and patronage will go elsewhere. read more

For 50 minutes last night, I stood by Ski Boot section in this lame excuse for a store. The two dopy employees walked by me frequently, as they casually assisted other customers. Not once did it occur to either of the dopes to look at me, say hello, smile, or even shoot me a quick nod. Nice job if you can get it, I guess. Lookin back, I should have just left after 5-10 minutes and never returned. The two-hour trip to/from The Ski Company in Syracuse loomed large, so I stayed. And Stayed . . . Anyway, after 51 minutes (why now?) one of the dopes asked if I had been helped yet. After some vague promise to return shortly, he disappeared for 10 more minutes - which made it ONE FULL HOUR of this nonsense. The crazy thing is that during that whole time the two dopes waited on 3 (three!) customers and sold 2 (two!) pairs of boots. The store was not even close to being busy! I was fully prepared to plop down a grand, give or take, to purchase a brand new pair of Fisher RC4 130 Flex Vacuum ski boots, size 27.5. It would have been their easiest sale ever. I TRIED to shop locally. I cannot do it, not at this place! Syracuse and Onondaga County will now get my $1,000 purchase plus taxes. Amazingly helpful staff. All of my bicycle needs go through them. I usually work on my own equipment but on stuff I can't do due to tool requirements and what not I take it here. On several occasions they have brought me back into the shop and actually taught me how to perform the task myself. The staff is a good group of guys but the owner seems a bit hear and there; I rarely see him around the shop floor. I've been out for a ride and need something mid ride done to my bike like a cable adjustment or something and Ill stop in and will receive immediate attention and occasionally their work is done purely on karma points. This shop has earned my business and is easily the best LBS in town. read more

I have been going there for years -- they have fixed my bikes for me ... i bought a wonderful Scott bike that they fitted perfectly to me. A few years ago i was building my own bike and had to get parts -- they got them for me, and helped me with "next steps " helping me around rookie mistakes. They have had some turn over, but love having a local bike place ... The owner donates his time and money and some of his staff to the yearly local AIDS bike ride fund raiser -- changing 100s of flats on his dime. yeah, even if they sometime feel a bit "snooty" -- come on folks, your ego that thin? read more

I had them pack my bike and ship it to me. When I unpacked it, I discovered that they hadn't bothered to remove the rear derailleur. As a result, the derailleur hanger was bent and had to be repaired. Removing the rear derailleur is bike packing 101; I find it astounding that they didn't do this. read more

This rating is based on kind, patient help provided to me, a low-demand, recreational bike owner. On two separate occasions we've taken family bikes in need of some (or a lot of!) TLC. Both times they've been great in keeping us to a very reasonable budget while throwing in courtesy extras on little things that were easy for them but hard for us to do. I needed someone to ship a bike for me and used Yelp in order to find someone that provided good service (I think the guy with the Felt bike had some pretty lame expectations so his review doesn't count).
