With the epic failure of attempting to rent kayak paddles at Puddle Dockers, we hit EMS instead. ¡IMPORTANT! If you read nothing else, read this. If you're looking to rent a kayak or paddles, look no further. ¡IMPORTANT! What would have cost us $20 a day (returned by the end of that same day) to rent from Puddle Dockers ended up costing us only $5 per paddle per day from EMS... returned by close of business the -following- day. You do the math. Plus, the store itself is huge, it sells tons of other outdoorsy gear, it's climate controlled, carpeted, and has funny, helpful (not to mention super hunky) staff. Admittedly, our sales associate had to figure out just exactly how he was supposed to check out paddles to us, but got it all sorted out with a little free humor and wit thrown in, gratis. Basically, it's everything that Puddle Dockers wasn't. Seriously. Catch my drift? [No pun intended on that last bit.]

A lot of the clothes were also in bags, and I'm not sure how people would know what they're looking at without fully unwrapping them which seemed impossible in the space. It ended up feeling really junky and I got out of here as soon as possible. It would work for them if they cleaned up a ton, displayed their clothes differently, and put away about half of the stuff out.

Basically the owner got AGGRESIVE insisting that MEN don't buy WOMENS clothes (um, what) also it's a black zip up so...zip it. His ridicule of my 16 year old escalated and as we decided to leave and not give any $$$ to this man (who started out cranky but legit is mentally unwell and possibly dangerous), he started approaching us to the point that I put myself between him and my daughter. We felt threatened and unsafe and needless to say wouldn't return if our lives depended on it. How this biz is still open is an utter shock. Clearly Ithaca isn't the community I thought it was to allow this place to stick around.

I rode a new to me e-bike to the shop, to get some: diagnostics on it, get a mirror and have it…read moremounted on it, buy a water caddy and have it mounted on it and get some questions specific to e-bikes answered. They did also this and answered a bike frame fit question that I have never managed to get a correct answer to. The visit was a win and worth the shop labor and time. I will go back to the Cayuga Ski and Cyclery.

It has the same high quality products but seems very small and short in inventory compared to the REI stores I've been to elsewhere. What really blows my mind is this is in ITHACA whose signature activity is hiking AND SENECA LAKE and they have no kayaks or paddle boards or really anything related to water activities. I was absolutely shocked as I wanted to look at some of those items and there is nothing here. Dick's sporting goods in godforsaken Binghamton has more water activity items than REI. I truly hope this is a temporary issue they will rectify. Huge disappointment.

Really nice display of taxidermy in the back of the store, with multiple species depicted. Stopped to use the bathroom and it was decently clean. But they have just about everything you'd want for athletic equipment, hunting gear, shoes, and active wear. This store has an especially nice and large section of Syracuse University clothing and memorabilia. The only major complaint is the checkouts. They are DESIGNED to produce long and ungainy lines. Even on a slow day, you're likely to wait 10 minutes to check out. This design does, however, make you feel like the only customer in the store when you ARE actually checking out.

I think one of the 2 staff members greeted me when I walked in, I wasn't sure but I said hello back. I was fine browsing alone, but not once did they ask if I needed help finding anything. The ENTIRE time I was in there (30-40 minutes), the staff members were talking to one another across the store, complaining openly about their income, about the way the store is run, about other coworkers, about their schedules, about their workload, etc. At one point one of them said something about threatening to "punch an old lady in the head," speaking about who I assumed was a co-worker from this store or another location. It was an energy draining experience. I left without purchasing anything because I couldn't stand to be around the unprofessional chatter anymore. The store itself was clean, spacious, and organized, had a decent selection of shoes, and a cute section for kids with a cartoon playing on TV. It's unfortunate that the customer service was so severely lacking, it really does make a difference in guest experience.
