We were jonesing for ice cream when the Harmony spot wasn't open and drove on down to Cayucos. Candy Counter was quite a find! Their ice cream ($5 kids, $6 single scoop, $9 double) was some of the best we've had around SLO and the gelato ($6 small) was the authentic Italian deal! We tried the butter pecan and honey churro ice cream and the mista gelato and all three were heavenly. The best part was our server who was so friendly, so helpful, and just had the best attitude. He made the visit even more memorable. The candy all looked fresh and fun - amazing considering the extensive selection of gourmet artisan truffles to vintage candy brands of childhood. My husband wanted ice cream so we were happy to find they have ice cream besides candy. Although I wish they would give samples before you buy, I picked strawberry and mint chip. Both were excellent! My husband got death by chocolate and peaches and cream (or something like that). The peaches was good too. I didn't try the chocolate as I'm not a big chocolate person. He seemed to like what he got. We also picked up some Jelly Belly's which you could get by flavor and not just a mixed bag of flavors which was good too. Even though we just polished off the legendary smoked salmon tacos at Ruddell's Smokehouse nearby (review: https://bit.ly/3n3G7KG), Jamie W. and I found something very alluring about finding an ice cream parlor at the base of the popular Cayucos Pier. You may already know Cayucos is a popular beach town on the Central Coast but not nearly as crowded as Pismo Beach. The more casual vibe made it more conducive for us to split a $6.50 Double Scoop Cup. I wanted an ice cream cone and, as far as I know, this is really the only place in town to get one. And it's fine for that. The ice cream isn't amazing, but it tastes fine. I think there were about a dozen ice cream options and a dozen gelato options to choose from. Two older women were working when I was there and they were not very friendly. They snapped at a couple of the customers, including a child. There was also a customer there who I think was tipsy who was not wearing her mask properly and who kept walking up to other customers really closely, who the employees didn't say anything to even though they had said stuff to other people who were being perfectly polite. FYI: they won't mix ice cream and gelato in the same cup - I don't know why. They were out of all cones (plain, sugar, waffle) when I was there, they said they were having trouble getting supplies. If you are barefoot with sand caked on your feet, they will ask you to leave and clean up before coming back in. They had a sign saying no malts or milkshakes when I was there. read more

One word; AFFOGATO! Omgosh! I discovered something new! I like coffee and chocolate but not together. That is until now!!" I asked Dave (adorable Barista that works there) what an affogato was and tried it and love it! It's dark chocolate gelato with a shot of espresso topped with whipped cream. Sounds whatever but the combo is unique and addicting. My husband and I visit seasonally and sometimes make the ride, via Harley, just for the fun of it. We enjoy the fun candies of our childhood and finding new stuff for the grandkids. Now when we go cruising if there is a place that serves affogatos I order one but honest haven't found a place between Camarillo and Cayucos that comes close to matching the craving I get for Dave's Affogato. Make sure you read the price tags before you purchase cause all sales are final and they don't tell you that unless it's in 12 point font somewhere. They seek ice cream but don't expect to get an ice cream cone. They are trained to say no to everything, employees are so fun to talk too! Just kidding.. God bless a place that caters to tourists and can afford to be open just four days week for 6 hours a day in the peak summer months. Looking for some dessert on your vacation? Try the gas station or the liquor store, because even on days that they're open, this place closes at 5:00 PM. However, this place is just like any old candy shop with less choices and more expensive prices. Granted, they are a specialty shop in quite a small beach town and their prices would be expected to be a little higher. If you're in Cayucos to get candy, there are cheaper places to get it but with not as good of a selection. Candy Counter has an array of choices and exceptional customer service with a small town mom & pop shop type of feel (well, because it is a mom & pop shop). Come here to visit some old friends (if you're a local) or if you want to support the small businesses. However, go somewhere else if you just want a cheap sugar fix (perhaps, Albertsons in Morro Bay). read more

Crowded, hot and quaint describes my recent brush with the Candy Counter. I went in solely for salt water taffy and left feeling like I got jipped by the high prices. Although to be honest it's a tourist trap right near the beach so what did I really expect? A question that still haunts me to this day. I didn't try the gelato or any of the other candy, but loved the trip down memory lane with the abundance of Warheads among other candy favorites from my childhood. The lines for the gelato was a little unreal for such a small establishment. I feel like that crowd was onto something though. I should have taken the hint and gotten some gelato for myself so that was this review would have had some real meat to it. Sorry guys. Gelato wasn't in my cards that day. Outside of the place being crowded and it's size (which can only be described as 'quaint') this place was hot. I've never been in an establishment that sells food that was hotter inside than it was outside and it was an 78 degree day outside. I felt like I was going to pass out, but my visit was short lived as my friend paid for his salt water taffy and left. The staff wasn't memorable by any means. However, what prompted my review this year was how sweet one of your employees was-my husband and I were doing our customary visit with our dog and one of the employees saw our pup and offered one of their yogurt dipped dog treats that had been broken and couldn't be sold. This is a very cute little candy shop right near the pier in Cayucas. They have all the regular prepackaged candies, some craft sodas, an ice cream counter, plus a counter with specialty chocolates and fudge. For being right near the pier, the prices were really good. I got a piece of peanut butter fudge, a specialty chocolate with cherry flavored chocolate and nuts, and a pineapple craft soda. The fudge was a little better than average, the chocolate was very good and the craft soda was excellent. The lady working the counter was switching back-and-forth between ice cream counter and the chocolate counter, which are separated for some odd reason. Pam has a great local establishment and I have been patronizing here for years. Husband Jim and daughter Bonnie can always be spotted helping out, and all her crew are very friendly and efficient. My go to candy is her yummy chocolate covered gummy bears and my wife's choice are the cola bottles. She has premium tasting bulk candy and best prices of any candy stores. Her milk chocolate salted caramels are the best I have ever tasted. I'm not a big ice cream person but anytime you go in here, warm or cold weather, the ice cream counter is always packed. This place is great for us locals but if you ever are traveling through make this a stop. When the Candy Counter used to be part of the weigh station building it was the place to go after report cards were given out at Cayucos School, at least in my family. Depending on our grades we were allowed to pick out a certain amount of candy or an ice cream as a whoohooo!! This usually only took me about half an hour... candy and ice cream available and i need to pick one - AHHHH!! Also, the owners back then were very family oriented and always treated everyone in the town like part of that family - catching up the local gossip, etc. Now that the CC has moved to a the "built up" section of the "main strip" it's gone down on my taste list. It's very sunny in that area and the candy is always near the window so sometimes it gets warm and soft. It just doesn't have the same like-a-bility that did years and years ago. read more
