I liked that I was close to home, easy parking on Market St with parking app, learned that Reynold's Candy used to occupy this space and amigo Dan's grandmother was a regular customer. Everything else was good but questionable. We got the Executive Cheesesteak. It appeared to be made with Filet tips. It came with french fries. It was less than the $22 posted on google maps. I came here with my mom for lunch a couple of days ago. She used to work downtown years ago and highly recommended Cavanaugh's, so I agreed to meet her. My first impression is that the architecture was beautiful. It was a little too traditional for my tastes, but the high ceilings and the greenery surrounding them made them a little more modern. The dining placements were odd. It felt more like cafe seating than a restaurant - walking through tight tables to get to your own. Their food menu mostly consists of pub/bar food. I ordered the cheesesteak without horseradish and mushrooms and my mother requested one their salads. The salads looked good and my mom enjoyed it, but I was disappointed with the cheesesteak. I like to order meals plain so that I can taste the quality of the food without it hiding behind other ingredients, then depending on how good it is I'll return and order the same thing without any alterations. This was not the case. The cheesesteak was dry and bland and had mushrooms. The fries that accompanied it were cold and just OK in terms of taste. I ate two bites of the cheesesteak and finished off the fries and that was my lunch. My mom tried the cheesesteak and she decided to take it home for herself, but also agreed it was dry and bland. I believe the entire platformed dining area had one server. She was nice and didn't linger for too long. I expected the food here to be good since it was downtown and with so many competitors within feet of this place, but maybe I came here at the wrong time or with the wrong intentions. I'm so glad this place survived the pandemic. Cavanaugh's is your classic American lunch spot in the middle of the downtown business district. They are only open for lunch. Highly recommended if you are selected for jury duty and have some time to kill. Prices are very reasonable, $14.50, for a fully loaded chicken salad. The guys and gals working here are great and know how to please. This place is the only reason I miss going into the office! read more

While walking down Market st in Wilmington we decided to stop in Cavanaugh's for lunch. The place itself is really cool inside. They told us it used to be a candy factory and soda fountain establishment and it beautiful just to see the inside. The service was very good and the people were very friendly. For lunch I had the tuna (cooked rare) over a nice salad. The only negative was that the salad was slightly over dressed, but other than that it was really tasty. read more

My coworker and I love to go here for lunch. I have been going here for years and honestly never have had a complaint. Today I tried something different. The French onion soup is great but it had a LOT of cheese on it. I am a cheese lover so for me to say that it means it's a lot. But trust me it's good. This is a great lunch spot for downtown Delaware. They are ridiculously quick when you have a short lunch break, and the food is delicious. Even on a busy day when all the tables are filled in the summer time, they are still remarkable quick. The menu is pretty expansive plus there's daily specials. Some recommendations for lunch... The club sandwich special with avocado is delicious and the Italian sausage covered in peppers and onions is also delectable. The short: An old building, still trying to figure out if this was a home or a venue, but a historical setting nonetheless. The upstairs is where I ate, and it looks somewhat "under construction" but looking down into the main dining area was kinda fun. Seating outside, under umbrellas, is a good idea if it's not too hot... but it gets hot in Wilmington. Also, the Paulaner umbrella doesn't means it's on tap, sorry. Stella Artois is, maybe that works for you. In any case, I ordered some cajun chicken sandwich -- what is it with me and sandwiches lately? -- and it was pretty good. My co-workers and I eat here for lunch at least once a week. We love the atmosphere because when you sit upstairs, you have a nice view of the entire restaurant and it's nice and cozy up there. We usually all get soups with every meal, and the soups tend to be delicious. They seem to always have the roasted red pepper soup and rotate two other specials. You can't really go wrong with any of them. The main courses themselves are very satisfying. The salads are HUGE, and every burger I've ever had there has been fantastic. I love the setup of the place, it looks like an old 'something' although I'm not sure WHAT! We had salads and soups, both were delicious. Here's the thing about Cavanaughs 's, the food is fine. It's at least as good as most of the other places on Market St. Atmosphere is really nice--well above average and their prices are reasonable. My only quarrel, and it's a fairly significant one, is that their staff is kind of rude and non-accomodating. I have always noticed it but today I was denied a very simple change to a pasta and then 2 people next to me were denied a four top in a half empty restaurant. It's not enough to keep from coming back. They should work on server attitude though. read more

For those of us who work in center city Wilmington, there aren't a lot of good sit-down restaurants. Cavanaugh's has good specials sometimes, but make sure you read the specials outside before sitting down. The standard menu fair is over priced and not very appealing. My coworkers and I had an excellent lunch the other day. The open faced crab melt was out of this world. I also had the roasted red pepper with chicken soup which is as good of a soup as you will find. Two of my coworkers had the tortilla crusted chicken salad and both agreed it was as good of a salad as they have had anywhere. Our fourth person who is from the south had the bbq baby back ribs special and said it was equal to any southern cooking he has come across. We are very familiar with Cavanaugh's and have been here often. They also cater all our firm lunches and do a great job. The owner and his staff are all over the place making sure you have a great lunch every time. There is clearly a reason that Cavanaughs has stood the test of time when so many other restaurants in this town have not made it. read more
