January 19, 2014 I'm so used to buying cakes from 85 Degrees, Diamond Bakery, JJ Bakery, NiNi and KiKi Bakery, but Cathy's Bakery...wouldn't have thought of coming here if it weren't for my mom and siblings. Well, mom's big 50th birthday was on the 20th (aka MLK day) and my brother wanted to get something different for our mom for her birthday. Mom did say that she doesn't want a birthday cake, so he thought....HEY! WHY DON'T WE GET THE PHYLLO CAKE! It's not frosted with milk cream and such, so [to us] it's not a cake-cake. My sister was awesome enough to drive to Cathy's before it closes at 8pm. We wanted to keep this a secret, so my brother asked my mom if she wanted to go to the casino at 6:30pm. Sister brought back the cake, and it was just as good as we remembered it. Love Phyllo! In the end, mom loved her cake, along with a fake dud cake and my freshly made bread pudding. HAPPY BIRTHDAY MOMMY! http://www.yelp.com/biz_photos/cathys-bakery-san-gabriel?select=RMokxF5UchQghesOHTqxBg#fgw_uFsi1iYxI0mK7jbWLQ read more

Found the crispy sponge cake!! it was $18 cash only for a box the size of a donut box LOL parking lot is small, but i had no problem on a weekday afternoon cake was a bit denser and plain in flavor than i imagined, but the crispy layer part made everything OK i'm still trying to figure out what that crispy part is Wish they sold it in smaller sizes so it's more socially acceptable for me to bring home and eat ... eating 25 or so of those babies before they go bad just wont cut it with the figure i'm trying to achieve read more

Been coming to this bakery for years solely for their crispy cake. That's all I buy here! Their crispy cake is basically a sponge cake with a thin layer of whipped cream and crispy filo pastry sandwiched in the middle. So good!!! A normal box is $22, but I think for an additional fee you can get it frosted and decorated if you call in ahead of time. Get it!!! read more

Best Taro cake in LA! You can also customize and add pudding and puff pastry layers to the cake. It's soooooo good

We were waiting for takeout next door at Chong Qing Special Noodles Restaurant and saw a few people come in and out of this bakery so we gave it a try. I got a sponge cake square as a snack to tie me over until dinner. It was a heavy slice but at the same time very airy. I loved the sponge cake. It reminded me of the sponge cakes my uncle used to buy from San Francisco from those Chinese bakeries that offered dim-sum. I'm going to have to come back to get it again and maybe pick up a few other items. read more

This is the place I usually get the crispy sponge cake from. I've been getting those since I was in high school (almost 10 years now). You can also pay a little bit more to have taro paste along with the crispy flakes. However, I just ordered a cake last week, and there are definitely less (about 1/2) crispy flakes compared to before. The workers here are very nice though. read more

Picked up two boxes of the crispy cake for $18 each and when I got home the cake tasted like it was from two days ago! I know what the cake taste like fresh and that's how I want it. This is very unfortunate that I won't be coming back nor will I be recommending my friends and family here. :/ This place used to be soo bomb. But you can't sell leftover stuff to people and expect them to come back. There so many better bakerys out there. read more

I was originally referred to Cathy's because they are one of the only bakeries in SoCal that make traditional longevity peaches "Shou Tao" steamed buns shaped like a peach. Unfortunately as a specialty item I didn't have enough time to order them-so it you're looking for longevity peaches for a birthday call ahead and order in advance. I was able to order a half sheet "classic" Chinese bakery style birthday cake and the baker was very helpful suggesting a design with longevity peaches made of whipped cream frosting. The photo he had was a little over-the-top and he could see my reaction and suggested he could tone it down. I went to pick it up the next day and it looked fantastic! The cake was light and moist a perfect Chinatown-style cake (and the price can't be beat.) read more

Overall good experience, the gentleman who assisted us was polite , the crispy sponge cake tasted well. I've never been chased out of an establishment before, but I'll still give this 2 stars because items LOOKED good? I couldn't buy any because the one (of two) employee manning the front counter told me if I wasn't going to buy anything, she couldn't do her work in the back and that I was essentially wasting her time. The selection of items LOOKED great at 8am on a Sunday, but she huffed and puffed until I moved to leave so I couldn't purchase buns, cookies, or cakes. I'm still reeling from the hostility. If you want to be treated like a Victorian street urchin, you've found the right place. read more

I would like to give negative 5 stars please! This place is awful! Bread and cakes are overpriced for the quality. The owner is a terrible person who yells at customers. The female who picked up the phone is the rudest person I had ever encountered. I will never go back to this bakery again. Take my advice avoid this bakery. I was looking for a special cake to bring to a dinner party, and came across this Cantonese bakery on Yelp. I called them a day before and was happy to learn about their Taro Cake which could be made by the next day. Fellow Yelper Fia R and I then stopped by one Sunday afternoon, and it was already sitting pretty behind the counter topped with fresh fruits with a beautiful coat of snow-colored whipped cream from top to bottom. Our Taro and Strawberry Cake was a two-layered sponge cake held together by a layer of fresh taro paste on one side and strawberries on the other. The cake tasted super fresh with semi-sweet spongy texture and creamy fillings on every bite. As a taro fan, I absolutely loved the use of fresh taro. I thought the strawberries tasted delicious too, but wished both fillings could spread together across the entire cake so the flavors could intertwine. Comparatively, the cake was more costly than Queen's Bakery and the whipped cream was not as fluffy, airy and light. There were communication issues with the person who took my order over the phone, so even though the cake didn't turn out exactly as expected it was still full of deliciousness. This small bakery also carries an assortment of freshly baked sweet and savory breads. I'd be interested in coming back to give their highly acclaimed mango cake a try. 3.5 stars for the overall experience. read more

Called up Cathy's Bakery to order a quarter sheet of their 5-star strawberry cake for Thanksgiving. They were open on Thanksgiving - however half of the population of San Gabriel Valley had the same exact idea and the place was packed. While it was quite hard to communicate with them due to the language barrier, we found out that they couldn't find our cake. They were looking for it for 10 minutes, but given the store is the size of a shoe box, we figured either the order was lost or someone else was happily eating our cake. They said we could wait for them to make another one - however we were really in a time crunch. Luckily the bakery was prepared and had specialty cakes for Thanksgiving. So we took one look and said "heck yeah we'll take it!" They wrapped up the cake and we were off. Cash only. Fast-forward four hours later bellies stuffed with tryptophan; the dessert was brought out and low and behold the TURKEY CAKE (http://www.yelp.com/biz_photos/6pGL9s0SC3AgE0LFZCdl3A?select=9TOKZ0LiE9aISZxfw3brdQ). This was stuffed with moist (eww that word) mocha sponge cake and their delish whipped cream icing. While this was mainly for show, the quality of the cake was on par with their reputation. Thanks for coming through Cathy's Bakery. read more

Love their Crispy Cake - Su Pi Dan Go...but their individual cake slice sucks! I got a Strawberry cake slice to go, and for $3 - not worth it. The top portion was good. The strawberry flavor and icing was great and not overly sweet. However, the last two bottom layers were dried and gross. I do not recommend this slice. Bleh! Sorry Cathy's Bakery, you have failed me... This last Thanksgiving, we were celebrating at my niece's in Murietta and I wanted to bring over a dessert. I remember seeing a picture here on Yelp of a mango mousse cake in the shape of a turkey. It made such an impression that we walked in a couple of days beforehand to order the cake. There was nothing to indicate that there would be any problem producing the cake, yet on the morning at 1100am that we were suppose to pick up the cake it was nowhere to be seen; it's as if we never ordered it at all. No apologies, no explanations, just no cake... They never asked for or took a dime from us as a deposit so I guess that there was nothing lost from their standpoint. The only thing lost I'm afraid is my trust in the bakery. From now on it's strictly cash and carry whatever they have right in front at the moment although I have to admit, there was nothing up until recently that led me to Cathy's Bakery in the first place... read more

I have bought a few cakes from cathy's bakery (not at this location) and has always liked their cake because it's so light (not too sweet). So it's only safe to say that I must get my wedding cake from them. I know their cake will be good and will not disappoint. I got a three tier cake from them and they have decorated the cake exactly the way I want it. It was perfect!! I showed them a picture of how i want the cake to look like and on the wedding day when i saw my cake i was happy of the outcome. The price for their wedding cake is unbeatable. I've searched so many different cakes, Cathy's Bakery is by far the most reasonably priced. I highly recommend this store for all the brides out there. But a little note: i'm not sure how well they can do novelty cakes, but for traditional / modern ones, they are good. read more

They must specialize in crazy big cakes. Mom ordered a cake for 20 people... it could feed 40. Seriously. They couldn't close the cake box cuz it was too big for it. RATATOUILLE...... I have always enjoy their bake goods, no wonder, they have rats in their kitchen. Here is a recent Health Department Report. They were also cited in Nov - 2017, these are serious violations. The Los Angeles County Public Health Department inspector visited Cathy's Bakery, 123 S. San Gabriel Blvd., on Aug. 20 and made the discovery. Specifically, he spotted: Two rodent droppings on the floor in the employee restroom Four rodent droppings on the floor near the water heater Two rodent droppings on the floor near the hot holding boiler About 10 rodent droppings on the floor under the cooking equipment and next to the oven One rodent dropping on the broken floor tile near the storage room About 15 rodent droppings under the shelves in the storage room This wasn't the first time evidence of rodents shut down the bakery. A similar action was taken in Nov. 30. The inspector also noted in his report, on file with the county, that two bags of sugar were being stored on the floor instead of elevated, as required, and "mold/mildew/debris" accumulated in the floor sink. He gave the bakery a score of 84 and shut it down. read more

I pre-ordered 36 fruit tarts and asked the staff to place them in 6 boxes so that I can give to 6 of my friends. When I went to pick them up the day after, the fruit tarts were all placed in one big box. The staff gave me some lame reason that one small box is too big for 6 tarts. She didn't want to re-package them. I told her I needed to give them to 6 different people. Given the pandemic, I want to give them individual boxes. She still found different excuses not to do it. I offered to pay for the small boxes. After some persistence, she agreed to re-package them. However, she was just using her hands to arrange them. That doesn't look very hygienic to me. That also makes me wonder how they prepare their products! read more

Their breads and pastries are pretty good, always fresh and all reasonably priced. Definitely try what they do best, which is their plain sheet cake with crispy center. You get an entire cake cut up into about 20 small rectangular pieces for $10. Others like their taro pudding cake, but to me it was bland and looks way better than it tastes. I would only recommend the taro pudding cake to older people who always complain about desserts being too sweet. Lots of parking! read more

We got a half sheet chocolate cake and a bunch of mini fruit tarts for my son's birthday. Cathy's really came through for us. The cake was spongy and tasty and the cream was delicious. The mini fruit tarts were a big hit at the first grade class. These mini fruit tarts used to be available regularly but these days they will have to be specially ordered the day before. We got the strawberry, peach and kiwi tarts. The teacher commented that the fruit tarts were a healthier choice as birthday treats (because of the fruit) and I already have a mom asking me where I got them because her son liked them so much. Definitely beats the designer cupcakes any day. We got Dots cupcakes last year and a lot of them were barely touched before they were thrown out. And boy were they expensive. This time, minimum waste, cost less and lots of compliments. The ladies at the bakery are always helpful. They brought the cake and tarts out to my car for me. CASH ONLY. A picture of the tarts is posted. read more

Me and my family have been coming here since we could remember... since 1987? I don't really know when it opened up... but this bakery here... is the EPICENTER.. of all the new frou frou super asian bakeries that have now come to be stereotyped in a certain way. 5 birthdays in my family x 22 years = 110 cakes x est. $10-$15/cake*adjusted for inflation* == $1100-$1650 spent on their cakes. I love the franchise. The owner, Cathy, has always been courteous to us... and we're not even Chinese! The standard, starwberry/vanilla cakes have always been our favorites. -- GO HERE. The birthday cakes here are sooo good. The taro cake here really beats out the ones at other bakeries. I can't wait until my birthday so that I have a reason to get another cake here. But really, you should try it. Something else that stands out about Cathy's Bakery is their baked new year's cake, which is sold around Lunar New Year. From what I remember, I think it's $6 for one, I'm not really good at visualizing but each one has an approximate 6 inch diameter (don't quote me on this). It's really good, the crust is flaky in a good way, and the inside isn't too sweet, which is awesome, because some regular new year's cakes are too sickeningly sweet and have a weird texture. read more

I thought her prices were reasonable for my wedding cake and they seem to have a good reputation on the Chinese bridal forums so after meeting with Mary I decided to go with them. Mary told me to come back much closer to the wedding date and that they only need 2 weeks notice. I ordered a 4 tiered cake that fed 150 people for $280 and also surprised DH with a groom's cake for about $35 I showed her a picture of a Lakers cake that Pink help me find on Flickr and they did a pretty good job of making something similar. This is a Chinese bakery so the nice thing about that is not having to pay extra for getting different flavors of filling. I got alternating fresh strawberry and mango w/ vanilla cake. For the groom's cake I got mocha which is DH's favorite. I got free delivery since my reception was pretty close. They will charge you a deposit for the cake stands and reimburse you when you return them. They said you don't even have to clean them Razz They were on-time and experts at making wedding cake b/c they knew they had to coordinate having the cake arrive around the same time as the florist to get it decorated, something I didn't even think about with all the other stuff I was worrying about. read more

We wanted flan cake, we read a review that mentioned flan cake, we came here to get some flan cake and... There was no flan cake. To quote one of the ladies manning the counter, "WHAT'S FLAN?" Well, that certainly settled THAT... We tried telling her it was like custard, and her final answer? They didn't have anymore of the custard cake. I knew that bakeries run out of a lot of items at the end of the day, but based on their Yelp-a-liciousness, I wanted to try it anyway. We ended up buying a few things to take home and enjoy: some sort of pre-wrapped sponge cake, a slice of their version of tiramisu, and a slice of some kind of custard fruit cake; weird because they told us five minutes earlier that there was no custard cake left in the bakery. We got home and the tiramisu was not anything even close to tiramisu. And that custard cake? There was no custard on it. In fact, it was a frosted version of the plain sponge cake we just bought. What the hell? We were disappointed, and to make matters worse this bakery holds the plastic lining on the sides of the slices with scotch tape. Have you ever tried to get that tape off the liner without mangling the cake? In Cathy's, there is a lot of what seems like yelling. They're not mad, but nevertheless, it's their "inside voice", and it comes across as sort of rude if you're not used to the culture. I really didn't mind the curt service: I've been a customer of Kelley's Bakery down in Atlantic Square, so I'm used to it. (she's actually pretty nice to her regular customers) I know that it's all subjective; my own personal preference based on my taste (or lack thereof), but the cakes weren't really encouraging us to go back for more. Bottom line, I'm not a fan of this place. read more

I've been ordering cakes at this bakery even before i knew i was getting cakes here! I hope that made sense LOL. Anyways my parents are big fans of this bakery and every time a birthday in the family comes up this would be our go to bakery. Even if there isn't a birthday we'd order huge sheet cakes for holiday parties as well. These are some of our favorite cakes: 1) Crispy cake: omg this cake is the bomb! it's light and fluffy cake with flaky, crispy phyllo in the middle. It's just so good and you can eat plenty of it without feeling guilty! 2) Fruit cake w/ pudding: i love the pudding on top with a peach or mango filling! its a little more rich and decadent, but overall still a fairly light cake 3) Mixed fruit cake w/ clear jelly on top: This cake tastes almost like the pudding cake, but its display looks so pretty because it's sliced fruit arranged beautifully with a clear layer of jelly on top. 4) Coffee cake: MY dad's favorite cake! the coffee cake is moist, light, fluffy and the coffee taste is just perfect. My favorite part of their cakes is the cream! i'm not a big fan of thick, american frosting because i find it way too sweet and it overpowers the cake, but at Cathy's bakery their cream is light and sweetened just perfectly, it's the cherry on top for their cakes! I've been purchasing my family's cakes from this place for a while now. Since I'm a procrastinator (even on my own birthdays, & yes I buy my own birthday cakes), I never place in orders in advance; I come the day of. They always have a decent assortments to choose from. I would never order something out of the ordinary like taro cake, but I've strayed from the typical strawberry favorite though they do have both if memory serves right. Every single time, the cake has been delicious! I usually buy the ones that are $20, but by the end of the night, only half of the cake is gone for 5 people. The cake itself is very moist and fluffy. The inside generally is full of fresh fruits. It also doesn't hurt that some of them are gorgeous, despite being a typical Asian bakery! However, they're quick to write on "Happy Birthday!" without really asking for preferences which then ends up looking shabby/shakey, or they'll sometimes just stick a little decoration off the side that will make the cake look cheap. Throw in "meh" customer service and limited English, I'm taking off a star. Plenty of parking in an empty lot. It's very easy to miss this place, so keep an eye out if you're using a GPS. read more

I don't like Las Tunas because it was a bit unclear so it did take us a little bit to find this place. Luckily I speak Mandarin fluently so calling them and asking for better directions or clarifications worked. Even though they speak Mandarin, some of the people who work there still don't get what I am saying. Maybe they are Cantonese? Speaking either Mandarin or Cantonese might be a necessity if you want to ask for anything specific. For the full review and pics go to http://www.kats9lives.com/2008/08/this-little-piggy-went-to-bakery.html They have a decent selection of bread, but I think I'd still prefer to go to Kee Wah Bakery. Their regular bread was good. I might be just personal preference so be sure to give Kee Wah, Cathy's, and Diamond Bakery a try to see which one is your favorite. I will give them this much, they make the cutest bread and cakes! The piggy bread is so adorable, which I loaded in the photos. They also had this inventive Porcupine cake in the fridge.
