January 19, 2014 I'm so used to buying cakes from 85 Degrees, Diamond Bakery, JJ Bakery, NiNi and KiKi Bakery, but Cathy's Bakery...wouldn't have thought of coming here if it weren't for my mom and siblings. Well, mom's big 50th birthday was on the 20th (aka MLK day) and my brother wanted to get something different for our mom for her birthday. This is the place I usually get the crispy sponge cake from. I've been getting those since I was in high school (almost 10 years now). You can also pay a little bit more to have taro paste along with the crispy flakes. RATATOUILLE...... I have always enjoy their bake goods, no wonder, they have rats in their kitchen. Here is a recent Health Department Report. They were also cited in Nov - 2017, these are serious violations. The Los Angeles County Public Health Department inspector visited Cathy's Bakery, 123 S. San Gabriel Blvd., on Aug. 20 and made the discovery. Specifically, he spotted: Two rodent droppings on the floor in the employee restroom Four rodent droppings on the floor near the water heater Two rodent droppings on the floor near the hot holding boiler About 10 rodent droppings on the floor under the cooking equipment and next to the oven One rodent dropping on the broken floor tile near the storage room About 15 rodent droppings under the shelves in the storage room This wasn't the first time evidence of rodents shut down the bakery. A similar action was taken in Nov. 30. The inspector also noted in his report, on file with the county, that two bags of sugar were being stored on the floor instead of elevated, as required, and "mold/mildew/debris" accumulated in the floor sink. I pre-ordered 36 fruit tarts and asked the staff to place them in 6 boxes so that I can give to 6 of my friends. When I went to pick them up the day after, the fruit tarts were all placed in one big box. The staff gave me some lame reason that one small box is too big for 6 tarts. She didn't want to re-package them. I told her I needed to give them to 6 different people. Given the pandemic, I want to give them individual boxes. She still found different excuses not to do it. I offered to pay for the small boxes. After some persistence, she agreed to re-package them. However, she was just using her hands to arrange them. That doesn't look very hygienic to me. I was looking for a special cake to bring to a dinner party, and came across this Cantonese bakery on Yelp. I called them a day before and was happy to learn about their Taro Cake which could be made by the next day. Fellow Yelper Fia R and I then stopped by one Sunday afternoon, and it was already sitting pretty behind the counter topped with fresh fruits with a beautiful coat of snow-colored whipped cream from top to bottom. Our Taro and Strawberry Cake was a two-layered sponge cake held together by a layer of fresh taro paste on one side and strawberries on the other. The cake tasted super fresh with semi-sweet spongy texture and creamy fillings on every bite. As a taro fan, I absolutely loved the use of fresh taro. I thought the strawberries tasted delicious too, but wished both fillings could spread together across the entire cake so the flavors could intertwine. Comparatively, the cake was more costly than Queen's Bakery and the whipped cream was not as fluffy, airy and light. There were communication issues with the person who took my order over the phone, so even though the cake didn't turn out exactly as expected it was still full of deliciousness. This small bakery also carries an assortment of freshly baked sweet and savory breads. I'd be interested in coming back to give their highly acclaimed mango cake a try. 3.5 stars for the overall experience. read more

Called up Cathy's Bakery to order a quarter sheet of their 5-star strawberry cake for Thanksgiving. They were open on Thanksgiving - however half of the population of San Gabriel Valley had the same exact idea and the place was packed. While it was quite hard to communicate with them due to the language barrier, we found out that they couldn't find our cake. They were looking for it for 10 minutes, but given the store is the size of a shoe box, we figured either the order was lost or someone else was happily eating our cake. They said we could wait for them to make another one - however we were really in a time crunch. Luckily the bakery was prepared and had specialty cakes for Thanksgiving. So we took one look and said "heck yeah we'll take it!" They wrapped up the cake and we were off. Cash only. Once upon a time, you could tell the bakery cared about its products and quality. Every cake, bread, biscuits were fresh. This is the first time post pandemic I went to the store. The shelves were half empty. The cashier was a middle age lady that was dancing and thumping to the upbeat of the loud mando-pop dance music playing in the store. I bought a mango mousse cake that was in the refrigerated section behind the glass and a club sandwich. Bad decision and choices. After I purchased the goods. I was hungry in the car. I open the wrapping to the sandwich and I ate it. It was so dry and they really skimped on the condiments and indigents in the sandwich. It was so dry like I was eating plain bread. I thought nothing of it till I drove 20 miles back home. After lunch the family decided to have the cake. OMG - the jello topping was dry like dehydrated fruit roll-ups. And the cake was dry and flaky. You can tell the cake was sitting for too long. How can a reputable bakery sell stale products. I will not go back to this bakery ever again. It was really bad - please take close look at the goods you buy here (take a good visual look of it) and ask how old is the cake or confectionery you're planning to buy. Remember the only take CASH! Sorry Cathy's Bakery, you have failed me... This last Thanksgiving, we were celebrating at my niece's in Murietta and I wanted to bring over a dessert. I remember seeing a picture here on Yelp of a mango mousse cake in the shape of a turkey. It made such an impression that we walked in a couple of days beforehand to order the cake. There was nothing to indicate that there would be any problem producing the cake, yet on the morning at 1100am that we were suppose to pick up the cake it was nowhere to be seen; it's as if we never ordered it at all. No apologies, no explanations, just no cake... They never asked for or took a dime from us as a deposit so I guess that there was nothing lost from their standpoint. I have bought a few cakes from cathy's bakery (not at this location) and has always liked their cake because it's so light (not too sweet). So it's only safe to say that I must get my wedding cake from them. I know their cake will be good and will not disappoint. I got a three tier cake from them and they have decorated the cake exactly the way I want it. It was perfect!! I showed them a picture of how i want the cake to look like and on the wedding day when i saw my cake i was happy of the outcome. The price for their wedding cake is unbeatable. I've searched so many different cakes, Cathy's Bakery is by far the most reasonably priced. I highly recommend this store for all the brides out there. I went to get some buns at noon today (Sunday). The coconut buns was very dry. The hot dog onion bun was very dry. It was in plastic bags, which should have been able to keep the buns moist. They are not 5-hour old bread. They probably are day old bread. But they are most likely 2 or more days old. I understand that business is slow. But selling days old bread buns that are dry as cardboards only set the business into a death spiral. I have been a regular customer whenever I am in SGV. But today will be my last visit. You get an entire cake cut up into about 20 small rectangular pieces for $10. Others like their taro pudding cake, but to me it was bland and looks way better than it tastes. We got a half sheet chocolate cake and a bunch of mini fruit tarts for my son's birthday. Cathy's really came through for us. The cake was spongy and tasty and the cream was delicious. The mini fruit tarts were a big hit at the first grade class. These mini fruit tarts used to be available regularly but these days they will have to be specially ordered the day before. We got the strawberry, peach and kiwi tarts. The teacher commented that the fruit tarts were a healthier choice as birthday treats (because of the fruit) and I already have a mom asking me where I got them because her son liked them so much. Definitely beats the designer cupcakes any day. We got Dots cupcakes last year and a lot of them were barely touched before they were thrown out. And boy were they expensive. But really, you should try it. Something else that stands out about Cathy's Bakery is their baked new year's cake, which is sold around Lunar New Year. From what I remember, I think it's $6 for one, I'm not really good at visualizing but each one has an approximate 6 inch diameter (don't quote me on this). It's really good, the crust is flaky in a good way, and the inside isn't too sweet, which is awesome, because some regular new year's cakes are too sickeningly sweet and have a weird texture. read more

I thought her prices were reasonable for my wedding cake and they seem to have a good reputation on the Chinese bridal forums so after meeting with Mary I decided to go with them. Mary told me to come back much closer to the wedding date and that they only need 2 weeks notice. I ordered a 4 tiered cake that fed 150 people for $280 and also surprised DH with a groom's cake for about $35 I showed her a picture of a Lakers cake that Pink help me find on Flickr and they did a pretty good job of making something similar. This is a Chinese bakery so the nice thing about that is not having to pay extra for getting different flavors of filling. I got alternating fresh strawberry and mango w/ vanilla cake. For the groom's cake I got mocha which is DH's favorite. I got free delivery since my reception was pretty close. They will charge you a deposit for the cake stands and reimburse you when you return them. They said you don't even have to clean them Razz They were on-time and experts at making wedding cake b/c they knew they had to coordinate having the cake arrive around the same time as the florist to get it decorated, something I didn't even think about with all the other stuff I was worrying about. read more

Found this place on Yelp and am so glad we did. We were looking for an affordable bakery for our wedding, and hit the jackpot with Cathy's Bakery! The price was much better than Diamond or JJ's Bakery and Mary was able to design a cake for us that went perfectly with our color scheme. She was friendly, helpful, energetic and really easy to work with throughout the planning process. The cake came out awesome! It was vanilla with fresh strawberries and mango filling. When we expressed concerns that it wouldn't be enough to feed 200 guests, she gave me her number and offered to drive some sheet cakes over to the wedding banquet if we needed it-- we didn't run out of cake that night but were really touched by her customer service. We wanted flan cake, we read a review that mentioned flan cake, we came here to get some flan cake and... There was no flan cake. To quote one of the ladies manning the counter, "WHAT'S FLAN?" Well, that certainly settled THAT... We tried telling her it was like custard, and her final answer? They didn't have anymore of the custard cake. I knew that bakeries run out of a lot of items at the end of the day, but based on their Yelp-a-liciousness, I wanted to try it anyway. We ended up buying a few things to take home and enjoy: some sort of pre-wrapped sponge cake, a slice of their version of tiramisu, and a slice of some kind of custard fruit cake; weird because they told us five minutes earlier that there was no custard cake left in the bakery. We got home and the tiramisu was not anything even close to tiramisu. And that custard cake? There was no custard on it. In fact, it was a frosted version of the plain sponge cake we just bought. What the hell? We were disappointed, and to make matters worse this bakery holds the plastic lining on the sides of the slices with scotch tape. Have you ever tried to get that tape off the liner without mangling the cake? In Cathy's, there is a lot of what seems like yelling. They're not mad, but nevertheless, it's their "inside voice", and it comes across as sort of rude if you're not used to the culture. I really didn't mind the curt service: I've been a customer of Kelley's Bakery down in Atlantic Square, so I'm used to it. (she's actually pretty nice to her regular customers) I know that it's all subjective; my own personal preference based on my taste (or lack thereof), but the cakes weren't really encouraging us to go back for more. I've been purchasing my family's cakes from this place for a while now. Since I'm a procrastinator (even on my own birthdays, & yes I buy my own birthday cakes), I never place in orders in advance; I come the day of. They always have a decent assortments to choose from. I would never order something out of the ordinary like taro cake, but I've strayed from the typical strawberry favorite though they do have both if memory serves right. Every single time, the cake has been delicious! I usually buy the ones that are $20, but by the end of the night, only half of the cake is gone for 5 people. The cake itself is very moist and fluffy. The inside generally is full of fresh fruits. It also doesn't hurt that some of them are gorgeous, despite being a typical Asian bakery! However, they're quick to write on "Happy Birthday!" without really asking for preferences which then ends up looking shabby/shakey, or they'll sometimes just stick a little decoration off the side that will make the cake look cheap. Throw in "meh" customer service and limited English, I'm taking off a star. Plenty of parking in an empty lot. It's very easy to miss this place, so keep an eye out if you're using a GPS. read more
