Thinking about their grilled catfish makes my mouth water! Catfish Charlie's is my go-to place when I'm visiting my relatives. I wish they had one of these in Houston! You order from the menu above the register and then pick your own seat. They have several flatscreen TVs to keep you entertained as you wait. We got the 6 shrimp & 6 oyster ($11.99, plus $0.99 for substituting regular french fries with their oh-so-delicious sweet potato fries), the 4 oyster & 2 grilled catfish ($9.99, plus $1.49 for substituting the french fries with a baked potato & cheese), and a bowl of seafood gumbo ($6.99). The sweet potato fries are deliciously sweet and were like a dessert for me! Everyone should sub for these instead of the regular fries. They also have fried pickles (another one of my faves)! Back to the catfish...I kept sneaking bites of my cousin's plate. These were the best grilled catfish I've ever had. The ones in Houston don't compare. The spicy, buttery, and grilled flavor gets me every time. If you want spicy, just tell 'em ya want it snappy. I'm going to be honest - I ride to Monroe every once in a blue moon to have a change of pace. It's a stones throw from Jackson and takes about an hour and a half to get there. My wife has never been so we made it a day trip. Read all the reviews on Catfish Charlie's and had to give it a try. It's an unassuming location, nice sized place - so I guess we caught them on a steady day. They weren't overly busy, but they were steady. My wife ordered the catfish plate, thin and crispy and I had the Tackle Box - which was 2 pieces of catfish, oysters and shrimps. The thin and crispy fillets are the truth - so say if you ordered two fillets, your really getting 5 to 6 pieces of fish out of that! The portions are good. Good cole slaw too. It's so many catfish joints across Tennessee, Alabama, Louisiana, Mississippi and North Florida it's ridiculous, but these guys have some really good fish. Here's the kicker - had so much food leftover, that we took it home in a to go box. So I had a taste for a late night catfish sandwich, took a couple of pieces of the leftover fillets and popped them in a pre-heated over @ 350 degrees - for about 5 minutes, and they tasted even better! That's how good their catfish fillets are. I can honestly say we will be eating at Catfish Charlie's again on our next trip to Monroe. read more

This place is simply...very very good. It is a must stop for us when we are in town a few times per year. The fried catfish & shrimp are always great but what prompted me to actually stop and do a review was my visit today. 1) The lady working the register was so friendly and and helpful...before and after I got my take out order. Plus as I was leaving I was thanked by two other employees. 2) And...I took a gamble today on my order. I always get a fish/shrimp combo or crawfish (in season) but today I went with the grilled salmon. Oh, my! I have eaten lots of salmon in lots of different places but this was the best I've had anywhere (minus my own Guice Park recipe). Seasoned well, nice charring on the outside and the inside was perfectly pink and not over cooked. And it as a very nice 9oz or so portion. Very very good for the 10.99 cost. The lady at the register says that the tuna is equally amazing. That shall be tomorrow's order :-) And, the hushpuppies, boiled potatoes and jambalaya that came with were equally tasty. We were driving through Louisiana and found this place one yelp. We asked some locals what to order and they told us to get the fried catfish fillet, thin and crispy. We also ordered a basket of fried dill pickles. I got the side of cole slaw, my wife got the sweet potato fries and my daughter got the fried onions. We sat down and realized that everything but the cole slaw was fried. After a couple bites, we no longer cared. Everything was amazing! My wife loved the catfish and she doesn't even like fish. There are no booths, just diner quality tables. I thought the food was slightly on the pricey side for what it is, but I tend to find seafood in LA a bit on the high side everywhere in the state. I ordered the 6 piece jumbo shrimp basket which came with 2 hush puppies and fries ($9.99) The lady taking my order was very friendly and the food was ready quite quickly. The shrimp was very tasty and the hush puppies were great. The fries were average, but I spiced them up with some of the cajun spices that were available at the table. One of my dining companions had the all-you-can-eat thin & crispy catfish platter ($12.99) and claimed that it was excellent. The portions were very large and plentiful on the catfish. Delicious Delta food! This is your normal neighborhood catfish house, nothing fancy. Reminds me of the ones I enjoyed as a kid in rural Alabama & east Texas. It seems to have changed a bit over time, but their fried catfish is one of the best. My friend and I would order a 4 piece basket and share it. It has never disappointed. I love their tartar sauce while adding a few spritz of hot sauce - it's what works for me. I remember reading it made the best of Delta 2010, and deservedly so. They've also started cooking up crawfish a few months back and I ordered up 5 lbs to try. It was good and I even found a gem in my order in the form of a piece of smoked sausage - Ooo yeah. This place just made 3Stars on my list. The menu is too pricey for what you get. The shrimp was tasty but missing something in the batter, the catfish was better than most places I've been but needs work on the seasoning as well. I expected better tasting seafood for Louisiana. The establishment needs a serious make over. It is very dingy looking, doesn't feel clean with dark ceiling tiles like they are trying to hide the dirt and discoloration of the tiles. While in Monroe for the day, we decided to try Catfish Charlie's after reading reviews here. When we first arrive, we noticed there were a ton of cars in the parking lot. Inside we were probably fifth in line, but the line moved very quickly. A very nice girl took our order and then we got settled in. We have two small children and decided to eat outside on the patio. The weather was perfect. Even being outside, a waiter came by several times to check on everyone. The food was delicious. We all got a catfish basket and my husband had fried shrimp as well. He declared it the best shrimp ever. We all ate way more than we should have and left very happy. The price was reasonable for the food. If we are in Monroe again, this will definitely be on our list of places to eat. read more
