So, the Catfish Cabin has been a stop we've been making for a long time on our way to and from seeing relatives in Texas. So, like always, we stopped in again today. I had heard the Hearn family had retired and sold the place, but didn't think much about it. We walked in and I looked up and noticed the ceiling tiles above the entryway were in very bad shape. Several were missing, the one around the vent was black, and you could see bowing wood panels as well. I'm not sure how that would not be some type of city code violation. But, we trudged on. My boys and I went to the restroom and saw the women's door had yellow tape over it and was closed. Yikes! The men's rr was dirty and the sink was dripping. The toilet looked like it had not been cleaned in a very long time. When we came out, my wife had been seated at a dirty table and said something to the effect of 'this isn't starting well'. The restaurant was mostly empty. They also had difficulty finding menus for us. There were also ceiling tiles in the dining area that were sagging, discolored, and bowing due to moisture. The floor was also sticky. But the last straw for me was sitting down, looking around, and seeing the wallpaper literally peeling away from the walls. It was unhealthy to be in there. So, before we ordered, we quietly slipped out. Keep in mind we have eaten here many times over the years and never had a bad meal. Go back and read my previous reviews. But when a place is in such a state of disrepair to the point that you don't feel comfortable being inside it, the food doesn't really matter. There's an old adage that says 'If what you can see is filthy, how dirty must what you can't see be!' Sadly, unless we hear otherwise. I can't see returning. read more

My son was having a birthday and loves fish, so we decided to try Catfish Cabin. It had been a while since we had been because we live closer to other fish places but were on this side of town. Their Facebook page boasted new management and recent specials. Upon entry, we were escorted to a table with a flickering light above. It literally had a strobe effect. I know it's these new fangled light bulbs but it was too much. So we asked to sit at the next table. The greeter asked if we needed a high chair but never returned with one. A waitress came and took our drink order. Momentarily, a second waitress returned with our drinks. We asked for a high chair and were supplied with one. However, it was missing a buckle. We asked if they had another one but the waitress said she didn't think there was a functional one. She went to check and returned confirming, "They all look like that." So, I held my toddler in my lap. When we ordered drinks and asked for a kids cup, she said "We don't have them. We take a gumbo cup and poke a hole in the lid." We accepted one thinking ok. I'm all for reducing your business costs. Except, the lids are quite flimsy, so I got cold water spilled on me multiple times. (Since I was the high chair.) Menu items were lacking descriptions and we had to clarify the difference between some meals, but we ordered and receive our food in timely manner. The food was ok. Pretty one-note. Definitely not worth the money I paid. Meanwhile, our first waitress came out in street clothes and hung out in the dining room, which was otherwise empty. Later, she disappeared and came back out in her work attire again. After the food came, our waitress disappeared. The bus boy came by eventually and asked if we wanted our check. We said, "yes" and packed up our uncut cake. I paid the bill and then helped my family gather for departure. When I returned to the front where I paid, the lady was on the phone. I waited and when she was finished, asked about management and shared my disappointment with our experience. She could not have cared less. Said no manager available and offered absolutely no apology or concern. Guess that's the same reason she didn't ask how the meal was or offer thanks for patronage. The first waitress came over concerned, but stated she had just started and didn't have advice to offer. I gave up and left the gloomy, dark dining room behind. I kept expecting Gordon Ramsay to come in for an episode of Kitchen Nightmares, but he never did. Shame, they could use his help. read more

Food is terrific!! Always!! Atmosphere good for a family night out or a romantic date! I've been eating here since they opened, I was in the 8th grade. I'm 65 years old now and I eat here quite a bit. I have NEVER had a bad experience!! The service is great too. Your glass stays full and they are quick to bring out more hush puppies or anything else you may need. Now, I'm in their parking lot about to go have another great meal!! Ciao! read more

They have the best hush puppies. Aside from that, we had fried pickles and it's excellent, it's crispy, not saggy in the inside, it's not salty. We also had fried catfish and shrimp poboy and it's all good as well, the only thing I didn't like is the coleslaw,it's too much liquid in it. Staff are very nice and friendly. I'm leaving this review on behalf of my wife. She had an unexpected stop due to a broken glass on her car. Catfish Cabin was next door and she likes catfish. Her experience with the waiter is the main reason for this review. The young man proceeded to sit down at the table with her and struck up a conversation telling her he saw her at church the other day, we live in MS, so he continues talking trying to convince her to order something that she didn't want. When he brought the food she did want he sat it on the table kind of hard causing some of the food to fall off, he didn't offer any apologies or try to replace the food that fell off. He then asked my wife that if any of his coworkers asked why he had been sitting there to tell them she was his second grade school teacher. I promise I'm not making this up. Well I'll start by saying, this place has been around for as long as I can remember.. and the food was always delicious, but their hush puppies stole the show.. a couple of weeks ago while in town I decided to try it out. It had been years ago since I've had their delicious hush puppies.. soooo I'll get to the point, the hush puppies are no more!!! I have no idea what they brought to the table, but they were chewy & had no flavor, inedible. Finally the food came out, looked delicious, I ordered catfish, oysters,shrimp, onion rings & a side salad. Nope!!! There was absolutely no seasoning!! Not a pinch of salt ,pepper,Cajun seasoning etc. when you have to sprinkle salt onto fried foods, it just doesn't work.Everything was Bland!Bland! I was very disappointed. Had lunch here during its fiftieth anniversary week. I forget about this place because I rarely go down Louisville Avenue, but I will make sure to frequent this restaurant on the future. I had the combination plate. Best fried shrimp that I have had in north Louisiana. Being Cajun, I am a pretty harsh critic of seafood. My boiled shrimp were perfectly boiled and seasoned while the catfish was a delight. Service was great even though the restaurant was slammed. I am making a note to eat here more often. read more

Disappointed. I used to eat at Catfish Cabin years ago and remember it being very good. I understand when restaurants are short handed but the service on this day was really bad and can't be totally explained by the short staff. When we ordered, we ordered onion rings as an appetizer. Well, when the server finally came out after almost 15 mins of waiting, I was expecting her to bring the onion rings, but no, she brought out the green beans from my entree. I thought I would just eat the hushpuppies that were served right away, but they were inedible. They were a chewy, tasteless mess. Even covered in ketchup, they were horrible. It was another 15 minutes before the onion rings came out and right after the rest of the food came out. It might have been ok if the food was really worth the wait, but it was not. The catfish fillets were decent, nothing great but not bad. The grilled fillets were mediocre. The building itself had a feeling of being old and run down. It was dark and kind of depressing. I had mixed feelings since the rating was not very high but it was right on my way to and from my destination so convenience was my ultimate decision maker. Thank you convenience! First: From the greeting to the "good bye" the people could not have been friendlier. Second: If you like whole hushed, this is the place to be. The fish are full sized, not the small fish that seem to be the norm at so many places. The batter is just the right thickness and the fish are cooked "just right" - crispy on the outside, still moist and juicy inside. Last: The sides - I shouldn't even comment because I hardly know. I was there for catfish. I know the fries were not bad because I ate about half; the hash puppies must have been pretty good too because I ate a few. The slaw? No idea, I never tasted it. But did I mention the fish? I over ate. So. If you're looking for great fish, this is the place to stop in Monroe. If you're traveling through on I-20, yes it's a little bit off the interstate but it is so worth. I don't plan for this to be my only visit! read more

This place was my grandparent's favorite place to eat when they would come to Monroe once a week. I remember as a kid going here during the summers ordering the "Catfish Filet Lunch". The food is good. Service is fast, but I agree with others that the inside could use some updating. But for me it's all about the memories...so I'm fine with the old furniture and old menu...contributes to the ambiance. read more

They catered for us at the football stadium. Comments from our group included ' the best crawfish etouffee I have ever had anywhere" and "the hush puppies I have ever had". Great for groups in there private area that you can reserve,have used the private area and catering for a large group. My nephew had his 18th birthday dinner there last night and I was not thrilled. We had a room in the back with around 30 to 40 people and there was 1 server for the whole room. RIDICULOUS. Not his fault I know but there should have been at least 4 back there for a party this large. Bless his heart, he did the best he could for being so overwhelmed but we asked for refills we never received and people waited so long for their food, they took it to go and didn't even eat there. I was here for a meeting in the private room so i can't attest to the service in the main dining room. The staff assigned to our room was attentive to us and our buffet was plentiful. Our buffet contained a whole lot of options and I didn't get to sample everything, but the ones I did choose were- fried catfish, fried shrimp, boiled shrimp (all of which were delicious). baked potatoes ( which were a little dried out, but I used a lot of sour cream to help that out), and the cole slaw (a little bitter, but not bad). The decor is a bit dated, but it was a nice sized meeting room that accommodated about 50 of us comfortably and suited our needs. read more

The long and short of it is: The staff was infuriatingly unhelpful, the cooking staff is seemingly incompetent, and the food was slightly above inedible. This place is what you would expect to see a bus of bingo players shuffling into on a Sunday afternoon after church. The wood paneling and cheesy nautical themed nick-knacks on the wall lead you into a wildly uncomfortable eating setting that makes you wonder why there are any cars in the lot at all. While traveling away from my native Nashville, I stepped into this country style seafood dinner (thinking that Louisianna seafood cooking would be superior to what I'm use to) and thought to myself, "Hmm, I thought that we were the only ones who think this terrible way of frying fish is tasty." And I was wrong. This is apparently a national epidemic. While catfish is not my favorite, I can tell the difference between good, bad, and unloved fish from any perspective. Every time I come here I enjoy the food and the service. The waitresses are always nice and sweet. The sweet tea is amazing along with their crushed ice. I usually order shrimp, crawfish and frog legs. They all taste pretty darn good to me. The greens are tasty too. Let me start off by saying the waitress and service was amazing, however the treatment that I got from the front desk , Lydia, was to say the least disturbing. I ordered a to go lunch order but was mistakenly given the full portion. Not a big deal. I informed Lydia that I did not have time for it to be fixed that I was on my lunch break and that I would pay for the larger portion. With food and debit card in hand Lydia snatched the food from me and rushed to the back to "take food out" of my box. First off, I didn't want someone who had been handling money and the register all day to "take food out" of my order. She then tossed my food on the counter and proceeded to ignore my complaints afterwards. But not before belittling her staff by blaming her irradic behavior on waitresses and staff. Extremely unprofessional and unhelpful not to mention highly unsanitary. I then later called the establishment back to speak with a manager since at the time I was on my lunch break. When I called back I was nonchalantly greeted by Lydia and informed that she was the manager and the other manager that I could speak with was her "husband" so complaints are null and void in other words. Needless to say I will be highly advising friends, family, co-workers and my clientel to avoid this establishment as there are far better options just right up the road. read more

The catfish was above average. The stuffed crab was the best I've ever had. The staff didn't seem quite up to the task. They tried hard and brought us to-go drinks before we left. That said, it's not a place I'd just have to visit again if I was in Monroe. Not saying I wouldn't eat there again, just not a place I'd put any big effort into visiting. read more
