The brisket literally melts in your mouth followed by two sides on the single meat plate. The cream corn is absolutely delicious and the green beans are amazing because they have a combination of onion, bacon, and tomato which make the sauce fabulous. The location is a little bit out of the way just a block or two from highway 90 but there is open parking next door. Service is done at the front counter and you wait for your order to be called then you find a seat somewhere that's open in the restaurant.
"If you build it, they will come." Castroville BBQ is one of those places that you will enjoy making the drive for. This BBQ joint is located in Castrovilles's Historic Downtown and offers some GREAT Texas BBQ. The staff is friendly and the building is so lively! On this occasion I ordered a sliced brisket sandwich, some macaroni and cheese, and cheesy potatoes. The sandwich was full of delicious brisket that was tender, hefty and very filling. The macaroni and cheese were cheesy and warm. And the cheesy potatoes... those cheesy potatoes were absolutely perfect! Creamy, warm, and buttery. I loved every bite. We came here on a Friday for lunch. There is a large parking area across the street from the restaurant. You order at the front counter where you also pay. We got the three meat plate with turkey, pulled pork, and brisket. For sides we got Mac and cheese, cream corn, and ranch beans. The portions were large and everything tasted great
I messed up. I take the blame. I genuinely thought this was the same owners as the old 2m(blue lacy) trailer that was in this same area. They are NOT even remotely close to that spot. I had to apologize for being wrong. For bringing a person whose opinions I value to a mediocre establishment. My ego and my credentials took a hit on this one. It's not that it's the worst place in the world, I mean it's not too far removed from that, it's that I was excited and had my date excited. The old bbq place had fall off the bone, perfectly seasoned meats, homemade pickles, and street corn. I guess I should've done my research. Let's get this quickly out of the way. The few positives. It's not too bad for the price, and the turkey was actually darn good...that's where it ends. The brisket lacked any character or depth. That salty, pepper bark was missing. I will leave it at that. I thought it was impossible to overcook green beans, they managed to prove me wrong. The jalapeño sausage had the consistency of straight from the can spam and lacked any kick. Then the most perplexing item we had. The pork belly. It was confusing. It didn't know what it wanted to be. The best pork belly at bbq place I've ever had, they let me go to the back. They smoke it, then just before it hits that fall apart temperature, the grill the skin side quickly searing it, and giving you the true pork belly experience. Take notes please. It was a texture and flavor failure. The bbq sauces were off putting as well. First not spicy, and felt more like a marinade. Also, the tables were all ridiculously dirty. Old napkins, and greasy left overs. I saw several, like more than three patrons clean their own tables. With us that would make 4. I'm going to do one thing I've never done. Every single reviewer that has been here before, and caused it to have this high of score. Shame on every single one of y'all!!! Heck go to R&R bbq and then come here again and tell me it deserves that high score! WHAT AM I MISSING?!? Was this the worst off day I caught them in? I cannot express how much I don't recommend driving here from San Antonio. Heck I live in the area and I can't even recommend it to my friends and family. Thank goodness that the bakery next door saved my reputation! That will be my next review.
Last summer, my parents dropped a huge bomb on me. For the first time in over 15 years, the two of them were moving out of Tyler to the Rio Medina area. By the time I graduated college, they were close to finishing the move. In my first week of living in the Rio Medina/San Antonio area, my dad took me out to lunch at a place he was excited to show me: Blu Lacy Smokehouse. At that point, I was impressed. After getting a job, moving out, and living in the big city of Hutto, I would always return to Blu Lacy every time I visited my family back in the Castroville area. It was smacking every time. Their cuts of meat were quality. For being an all-day BBQ establishment, it always tasted fresh. Even better, my dad was always happy to go with me and have quality bonding time. A few months ago, my dad sent me a message on Instagram. When he DMs me something, you never know what it could be. This time, he had some major developments to share: Blu Lacy was rebranding. Originally, Blu Lacy was a sister location to San Antonio's 2M BBQ, but the pitmaster of Blu Lacy and the pitmaster of 2M decided it would be best for the two to split and focus on their own establishments. Blu Lacy was sonically similar to 2M but had its own understanding. What was the true reason for the rebrand? My best guess is that they were trying to make it fit in better with the crowd in Castroville. The unique sides might not have been cutting it the same way the Mexican-inspired sides at 2M work for San Antonio, so they pivoted. Castroville Barbecue Company is really just a facelift. It knows it wants to be a modern version of a country-style BBQ establishment, and they do a great job at it. Just like what I remember at Blu Lacy, the meats are always on point. My favorite thing is their pork ribs. The way they fall off the bone made my dad and me giggle like little kids. The jalapeño cheddar sausage is pretty great, and the brisket is in the upper half of brisket I've had. Probably the best brisket at a non-sellout BBQ establishment I've had. It tastes like sellout BBQ. I'm shocked you can get a plate by 7 PM. The sides are nice. Their potato salad, creamed corn, and macaroni and cheese are all fantastic. Personally, I think removing the Tex-Mex flair from the sides is a bit of a bummer, but for a majority of Castroville residents, I can see it as an upgrade. People like my mother just wanted something that was no-frills. I've been twice since the rebrand: once with my father, once with my girlfriend. As someone who didn't know the backstory of Castroville Barbecue Company, I asked her for her thoughts on the restaurant after lunch. She said, "I used to have an aversion to ribs, but the pork ribs healed something in me. Something deep down." Here's to the future, here's to healthy change, and here's to my dad picking up the check when we go together. Father-son bonding.
Food was so tasty and flavorful. Service was pretty fast and employees who assisted us very helpful. Such a cute vibe to this small town. We drove from San Antonio to go to DPS and decided to have lunch here and it was easy to find, parking right up front. And so good. Definitely worth the drive !!!!
Drove through Castroville this weekend and was unimpressed with the roadside eats right off the highway. I'm so glad we ventured off the highway and landed at Castroville bbq. There was a convenient lot to park right across the street. Walked right up and ordered inside. We got the two pounds of pulled pork platter for $50 with two sides- Mac and cheese/green beans. They were spicy but delicious. The breaded crumble on the Mac and cheese was divine. Sat outside on the patio with our two kiddos and puppy. Ordered drinks from the bar. They have great outdoor seating. Little fans to keep the flys at bay. Not to mention it's totally kid friendly with a playground. Service inside was quick and outside at the bar was friendly also. We'll definitely stop by again on our way through town now that we know this bbq gem exists.
10/10 bbq. Pricey, as expected, its bbq and with meat prices going up prices go up as well. Mac needed a little salt and pepper, but still good. Cole Slaw great, nice and wet. Brisket amazing. Sauce, amazing. They use the same oil to fry the fish in as to fry the fries in. Out here for work and the local coworker asked me where I wanted to eat. "Lets to go Castroville!" In a confused face he responded"What the heck is out there?" He literally ate those words. A nice peppery and smoky brisket. And the lean portion was so moist and the way it hit the light coming in from the window was mesmerizing. The jalapeño cheddar sausage had the most perfect ratio of cheese and pepper flavor. And a heat that is slight enough to enjoy. My bite into the ribs cant even be called a bite. It held its shape but the resistance from my teeth felt almost nonexistent. Man I could eat these ribs all day. Such a great meal and I even got to check out the pit room as we were leaving. Now my coworker knows what the heck is out there in Castroville. Lol.
I came for a yelp event and was supposed to get the bbq sandwich; however they were already sold out. Must be good! I didn't mind, though. They switched it out for a meat plate and I got brisket, cheesy potatoes, and green beans. They brisket was sooooo good! I've been wanting some good bbq meat! I haven't found one that just stands out in SA. The cheesy potatoes were yummy, just a little greasy for what my stomach can tolerate! I did enjoy them, though. The green beans were good at first but then it was just way too much salt!! I had my family try it and they all said they same thing. It seemed like a great place to take your family! The entrance is on the left side, I got confused and had to walk all around to get in. They had seating inside and outside. It seemed clean and kept well. I'm going to have to check it out with some friends again.
Delicious and fast. Workers offered their favorite recommendations from cold pasta salad to the hot creamy corn side dishes. Clean and organized, servers talked with and prepped the dishes In front of you.
Well worth the drive. We got there as soon as they opened for the most fresh experience. My favorite protein had to be the ribs. The sauce that you can ad just puts it over the edge. The brisket was okay. A little salty but could've have just been the day. My favorite side was the baked Mac and cheese. Perfect cheese ratio if you don't late tour Mac too creamy. Service was amazing. If you have any questions they're super quick and helpful.
Amazing bbq and super friendly service in Castroville. I went to try their rebrand and have gone back SO many times since. Pro tip, follow them on insta since they post their specials. I've tried their brisket, ribs, nachos, and turkey and all are SOOOO good. Very juicy and seasoned perfectly. They have 2 bbq sauce options (spicy and regular) and both are tasty. For sides my favorite are their ranch beans, fries, and Mac and cheese. The peach cobbler is also a must order (especially with ice cream) I love that they also offer plates but their sandwiches are my personal fav. The restaurant is super cool too and has an outdoor bar and a playground for anyone with littles.
YUM!! great texas bbq, we were passing by and as true texans needed some BBQ. great customer service, great location. 3.5-4 We decided to try this place out after having it on our list for some time. The brisket was great! Really tender, I liked the bbq sauce, a little different than "traditional bbq sauce" here, my boyfriend didn't like it. We also got the smashburger and the potato skins. The potato skins are a perfect appetizer and the smashburger was alright. The service could have been better, they kind of side eyed us, not sure why, castroville is a small town but I assume this is not a spot "for the locals" only. In general the space had enough seating for the time we went but I could see it getting packed. read more
This is our third time in and phew! That food is simply amazing!!! Tasty, fresh, with great sides to choose. You really cannot lose on what you choose. The brisket, sausage, turkey, pork...it's all good. I definitely recommend. read more

I recently selected this spot as my next BBQ destination to try out. I had a few days of from work, so I made the hike out on a Friday afternoon. Having dined at 2M before, I was hyped about this place. The restaurant is off the main road, and it appears to be two separate buildings, one specifically for the smoking. After parking, I eagerly made my way. The place appeared crowded as there were several people in line. This allowed me some extra time to decide on what to get. Although there was a line, the two guys putting the plates together were quick. I opted for the three meat plate, with brisket, turkey, pork ribs and my two sides were beans and potato salad. I opted to just dine at home so I am not sure what the dining room set up is like. All the meats were smoked to perfection, and were tender. The bbq sauce added a little extra to the meat, and I wish I had more of it. I thought the sides were spot on as well. Although it is a bit of a drive, I do plan to make it back in the very near future. read more
I got to try some of the new items on the menus and they are AMAZING! The nachos were so generous, I loved all the toppings , the cheese was chefs kiss The Turkey sandwich was so juicy and soft. I think it might be one of my favorite items. The peach cobbler is out of this world, get it with the ice cream! read more

Best BBQ in the San Antonio area. Hidden in a great little town. Worth the drive out for sure. So much parking available you will never have to worry about that. Food, amazing. I've had all the meats and they are all amazing. Sides, go for Cheesy potatoes. read more

Absolutely the best BBQ within a drive from San Antonio! Definitely won't be disappointed in the family oriented atmosphere and excellent customer service provided by staff. The restaurant is an old meat market and you can still see the remnants of that. The smell of the savory brisket, chicken, turkey and sides consumes you from the entrance and there is no turning back! Divulge you must! Their sides are classic yet their own and you can't go wrong with anything you choose! read more

Castroville BBQ we go back to before the transformation a while back and here is my updated review as I had the opportunity to try it under the new name Castroville BBQ! Visited on a Friday evening and there wasn't many people aside from a couple ordering in front of me turns out on a nice evening people were enjoying the outdoor area! I ordered the 2 meat plate included the sliced brisket and pork ribs with the 2 sides cream corn and baked Mac and cheese. The brisket was ok a little dry compared to Blu Lacy and the pork ribs were meh. The baked Mac and cheese was dry and the cream corn was sweet and creamy that side is where it was! My wife ordered the brisket nachos, crispy nachos layered in white spicy queso topped with shredded brisket this is where it's at! The prices are reasonable and I noticed more options as well as the bar offerings are reasonable price and variety of beer and mixed drinks. I enjoy the fact that they have a play area for the kids while your enjoying your food and drinks overall atmosphere is great and live music makes it for an enjoyable atmosphere! Overall, a bit disappointed in the bbq however I do enjoy the atmosphere I'll be back to try out their burgers and don't sleep on those brisket nachos they are amazing! Also noticed no more Stubborn soda. :( read more

Food: 10/10 Service: 10/10 Ambiance: 10/10 sat outside the weather was fairly nice We came in last weekend around 6, the last tail end of dinner rush. We ordered the chopped Brisket family meal which ended up with leftovers because it was just the 2 of us lol. Also got 2 ribs to try and they were AMAZING!!! Mac & cheese wasn't as creamy because we got the last of it but it was still good. Potato salad has a pickle taste they do serve green onions (I asked for them on the side) and they balanced out pickle taste. We live about 20 minutes from Castroville so we will definitely be back soon!! read more

Me and my friend were touring around Castroville and decided to check out this bbq place. You see outside the smokers which is promising that you will have the freshest bbq. We stood in line and decided to order a plate that has a bit of mix to test it. It was a ok! Nothing really special to write about. read more
Again, I apologize for not having pictures of the food...However, that's because it was that good that I couldn't slow down long enough to take pix...We had 3 (2 meat) lunch plates...they had Pulled Pork & Brisket w/ Mac'N'Cheese & Greenbeans...I had Brisket & Chopped Chicken (thighs) w/ same sides...3 people & NO complaints...I gave my sides away but the Proteins were great...putting this spot in the rotation!!! read more
Ended up in Castroville today for lunch and tried Blu Lacy Smokehouse. Very clean and rustic look inside. The staff was very friendly. The food absolutely delicious. I had the chopped brisket sandwich, buns are baked fresh next door at the bakery. The brisket was tender, juicy and full of flavor. The jalapeño cheese sausage was delicious . Ohh my and the Dino Rib was my favorite .. huge, tender, juicy, & full of flavor All of the sides were on point. They have seating inside and outside. We ordered Nachos and a Philly sandwich. The Nachos were delicious but the meat topping was kinda light. The Philly sandwich was delicious, but lacked vegetables. Service was outstanding. The place is great for eating in. Very clean. read more
Went to lunch today at Castroville BBQ with my daughter. My plate consisted of BBQ beef sausage, BBQ ribs, potato salad & supposedly pinto beans. The meats were very delicious with a flavorful smoky taste, but the BBQ sauce contained too much vinegar, and the beans were navy beans, cooked like pinto beans & the potato salad needed some sweet pickle relish. The potato salad was my liking to add sweet pickle relish, everyone does not like a hint of sweet in their potato salad. My daughters plate consisted of BBQ beef marble brisket which was very juicy & tender, but she said a little too much cracked black pepper was on the brisket, BBQ ribs, which again were great, she liked the beans but the Mac & cheese was cold. The restaurant is very nice inside, and you get to see the sides when ordering your plate. The staff were very nice. We ordered peach cobbler and it was delicious! You could taste the cinnamon, the peaches & crust were juicy and it was served warm. What a treat! RECOMMENDATION: I would highly recommend this BBQ restaurant due to all food items purchased and ate were very tasty. read more
