The AMC

There are still plenty of places in Castroville that I have yet to explore. I've driven by The Dough Station multiple times and always thought it seemed like a good place to get some slices. An opportunity arose yesterday, and I ordered two pizzas for pickup. The only way to order takeout is by calling the store. They don't take orders online. It only took a few rings, and I was able to easily place my order. They told me it would be 25 to 30 minutes, so I showed up about 30 minutes later around 6:30 pm. After I paid, it took another 10 minutes for the pizzas to be ready, and I left with them in hand at 6:40. The place clearly had an evening rush since the parking lot was pretty full. The space is a hybrid indoor-outdoor setup with a small inside room to order and check out. It's hard to explain the exact vibe of the place, but honestly, it's such a cool spot. The restaurant is in a former gas station, and they keep that energy through modernized yet slightly rustic decor. Outside seating is picnic benches with umbrellas protecting customers from the Texas heat. The place was poppin' on a Friday night because frankly, it's the place to be. Such a cool evening vibe. It reminds me of More Homeslice off Congress in Austin, but more local and with a great bar. As for the pizza, they only have one size at 14 inches (6 slices), with a 10-inch cauliflower crust for the homies who need it. We ordered two pizzas for my parents and me, and it was plenty. For being 6 slices each, the proportions are fair, but we were hungry, so 4 slices each was perfect. Next time, I think I'll opt for one of their appetizers too because they look fire, especially the house-made parisa (say less!!). We ordered The AMC, which had brisket, bacon, pepperoni, meatballs, and mortadella. It's a unique take on a meat lovers pizza, but it was fire, especially the cuts of brisket. My dad and I crushed the pizza. No survivors. For my mom, we got a cheese pizza (they call it The McCallister) with black olives. She didn't finish the pizza, so my dad and I did. Double homicide. I rock with woodfire pizza, and The Dough Station did a great job. The entire 10-minute drive home, I was tempted to open up a box and sneak a slice, but I knew I'd be judged for my greed. I'm excited to return to The Dough Station and eat in person soon, because if the vibes don't pull me back, the pizza definitely will.

Came here on Halloween for the first time. The pizza was made quickly and was very good. The staffs were excellent and helpful. The had a nice beer and ok wine selection. The outdoor patio was very nice but just a bit noisy from the loud music and highway 90 traffic.

The Margherita pizza, the Local pizza (brisket, pickled onions and bbq sauce), and pimento cheese appetizer - all delicious!

Delicious pizzas with lots of different toppings at great prices! Fun outdoor eating area as well as seating by the bar. Great service too

Let's start with the obvious... Is the pizza good? No... It's fabulous! Perfect crust cooked to perfection and topped with delicious ingredients. My wife, son, & I had the AMC which was great. Our friends had a cauliflower crust which was best I've ever had. If you're new to Castroville order the Paris appetizer. It's not found many places and they do it well. They make homemade gelato which looked great but we will have to try that next time...

Pizza here is great. We showed up at 6pm and it was pretty busy. Order inside and then grab a seat outside. There is a full bar here too. We ordered the Chisme bread, The McCallister, flammkuchen, and The Angry. The Chisme comes with a sauce, so we got the house made ranch. Everything was so tasty. Seating outdoors are on picnic style tables, don't be afraid to share. I recommend the Chisme bread, and The McCallister.

Camera always eats first BUT we were starving by the time we got back to San Antonio so I didn't get any pictures! As someone who is gluten free it's not just the taste that matters but the safety matters too. They were extremely careful and led with "preference or allergy", a crucial distinction for someone with Celiac like me. That is great service and pride in what you are doing. Anywho, on one of our many trips through Castroville we decided to stop here after noticing this place a few months back. My gluten free Margherita pizza was great! I had sausage added. The burrata salad was so good! I have done nothing but complain about the lack of burrata in San Antonio. My husband's pizza (normal crust) was very good looking. I'm so bummed I didn't take pictures. Haha It's worth the stop! We would've eaten in for a first time try normally but we're on the road with our pups and it's just not feasible. Parking up front can be tricky but there is normally plenty of street spots. I had no idea how cute Castroville was and wish I had know back when we first moved to TX. We're leaving the state but I hope this place and this town continue to thrive! Also they have the cutest cowgirl t-shirts! I would've gotten one but they only had them in blue and yellow.

Pizza, sandwich, salads, all good.

Great food, service is amazing. Love the way it is set up. I recommend the big sexy sandwich.

You have to try the Chief pizza and the Smores pizza. They are a little stingy with the cheese and sauce, so you might ask for extra.

The shop is made from an old gas station that was converted into a cafe. They serve pastries along with a wide range of coffee beverages. I always find myself drawn to their seasonal drinks, which are usually themed around something fun. This year's holiday menu was Ice Age themed, but I remember last year being Shrek themed, and I think there was even a Top Gun themed menu at some point over the summer. For the Ice Age menu, I got a Manny which was a Chocolate Orange Mocha drink. I got it hot and it was great! The space inside is quiet, nice, and well lit. It's a great place to get work done. In the past, I've noticed the wifi could be tragically slow, which made some tasks difficult. During my most recent visit, though, I don't recall the wifi being slow at all, so it seems like that issue has been fixed. There is also plenty of outdoor seating if you get lucky with one of the three nice weather days in San Antonio. I really like the coffee here. For such a small shop, they do a great job, and it has become an essential stop for me every time I am in Castroville. RIYL: Coffee shops that are old gas stations but do not have a functional gas pumps anymore, so you don't accidentally get gasoline instead of a latte. I hate when that happens!!

Always hate when food trucks sell out, though it is understandable. Friendly employees, ready to answer any questions regarding the menu. What did we choose tonight? *Fried Mushrooms were unsatisfying. Slacking on flavor, breading overpowered. *Southwest Turkey Melt Sandwich, full of creative ingredients. Avocado, cheese, lettuce, tomatoes, pico de gallo, and even some kettle chips! Turkey was tasty deli thin cut, flavors came together well. Texas Toast was grilled with the right amount of butter an oil (you know how often places serve it drenched in oil!). I will say that the cheese was a little firm and the sandwich a little lukewarm for a "melt". Chose *Potato Salad as the side, which was tastier than expected; appreciated that there was not as much mustard or vinegar as most. *Mushroom Swiss Burger ironically had cheese that was far more melted than the Turkey Melt. Which was awesome, of course. Fresh and flavored sliced mushrooms (unlike them fried ones), a tasty fat patty (moist, tender, maybe a little extra flavor needed), and buttery, slightly sweet buns. Overall excellent. Came with *Fries, which were satisfactory; some were burnt and dry. Dessert was a *Fried Twinkie with Raspberry Drizzle. Oh, it was heavenly.

No. Did I know there was a Castroville-favorite restaurant there as well? Also no. We had to try it. Located inside the Alsatian Golf Club's clubhouse is their 19th-hole restaurant and bar: Julianna's Restaurant. Upon entry, you realize the place has been around for some time. It feels very classic San Antonio, with wooden walls accented by tan and white bricks. The restaurant's aged interior gives it a cozy, lodge-like charm. Though the restaurant was pretty busy on a Saturday night, we were seated instantly at a booth that gave me a perfect view of the Georgia-Alabama game on the bar's TV. After nine or eighteen holes, you never know what you're in the mood for. That's why Julianna's has plenty of options: sandwiches, pizzas, pasta, seafood, steaks, and other meat dishes. Our server came by very quickly and got us our drinks, which for me was a tall Saint Arnold Oktoberfest. I had a tough time deciding between two options: a bone-in pork chop or their creamy Cajun pasta. I opted for the bone-in pork chop with a Caesar salad, bacon green beans, and herb rice. My dad got the creamy Cajun pasta, and my mom got the Southwest chicken. It wasn't long until the Caesar salad came out, with huge croutons and a generous helping of dressing. It was excellent to the point my mom wished she had ordered it over her chicken tortilla soup, which she also enjoyed. If you ever order a meat entrée and they stick a steak knife in it, you're in for an ESPN Instant Classic. The pork chop was huge, topped with a house raspberry chipotle sauce. It was tender and cooked well. I'll admit, trying to find the bone versus the pork was a challenge, but I think that was a me issue. I would order it again. As for the sides, the bacon green beans were sneakily running for Sixth Man of the Year, and the herb rice paired with the pork chop quite well. I would go back. The meal was high quality and felt like a hidden gem even for longtime Castroville residents. What a treat. RIYL: Going to golf courses while being very bad at golf.
