I have a 16-year-old Acura MDX with 230,000 miles. The engine light started flashing and then ran rough, losing power. This happened about 18 months ago. Then, the dealer was covered up with "open recalls" (Acura recalls that many cars?) and kept my car for 3 weeks. It cost me about $3k to have two coils and spark plugs replaced. This time the dealer told me he was "covered up with open recalls." Wow. Still covered up with open recalls, huh? Doesn't speak well of Acura. Anyway, Costco's website referred me to Castleton Auto Repair. They took my car in the same morning I called and it was ready, good to go, the very next morning. One coil and spark plus replaced and new front brakes installed for $800. Wow. They're incredibly friendly and forthright. No upsale. The mechanic, Kyle, said he drove my car and found nothing else wrong. This place is now my go-to for auto service for my MDX and for my family's Subaru. read more

My car overheated and I took it here around when they closed. They said they'd look at it first thing in the morning and then give me a call. It gets to be around 1:45pm the next day and there was no call. I called, and they said my car was up next. Two hours later, I call again and they said the same thing. I call for the final time about 10 min before close (4:50ish) and they say that my vehicle is up next for tomorrow morning. So, I ask the person why I called multiple times and was told it'd be up next for an entire day but he said there had been multiple employees working so he didn't even know who talked to me. I was noticeably upset but I wasn't insulting or overly disrespectful, I work too and understand that it probably wasn't the guy I was talking too's fault but I am (for good reason) upset about my situation. I could have forgiven all of this. Shit happens. But THEN the next morning the owner calls to just go off on me for being upset? He instantly came at me with "we don't need your service" and was very rude for no reason. He would hardly allow me to say what I needed to say and kept interrupting me. Then he kept a saying how messed up my car is and how there's probably gonna be a lot more wrong with it and it'd probably take time. As soon as he said this I knew he'd try to overcharge me if I continued with him so I took him up on his offer to take my business elsewhere. No heat concern. Informed of issue when dropping off vehicle, was told, "we'll start with the thermostat." No call informing vehicle was done. Had to call them. $354 for coolant/core flush and a thermostat. Way to high on the cost especially considering the heat quit working in 3 days. Called to let them know. Silence over the phone. I asked if I could drop it off? Sure can't get to it today though. Next received call stating it was flushed for 2nd time but if it happens again they'll have to charge me!!!?????!! Less than a week later no heat. Overall short with customers. Price to high. DOES NOT HONOR THEIR WORK!!! Zero stars. read more

Update: Took my van to a reputable auto shop and found out that 3 out of 5 of my driver front wheel studs were broken. I'm told I was lucky my wheel didn't come off on the interstate. Not only could I have died, but it cost me another $250 and a day off work to repair the damage Castleton Auto did to my vehicle. I emailed CA's owner, Toby Trump, to make him aware of this and to let him know that I still feel a refund of the $270 I paid to have my van damaged is fair. I haven't heard back. Kudos to this business. When my car stopped starting reliably, I called them on a Monday morning and they said they could look at it the same day. I had it there by noon. They determined that it needed a new starter, and they had it fixed by the end of the day. It once again starts the way it should. I got there first thing this morning and they took my car right in for an alignment. The lounge was very comfortable with snacks and drinks to offer. I signed into the Wi-Fi which worked smoothly and was able to get some work done before heading into the office. The service was fast and the price was right I will be back. This shop does great work, but their customer service is hit or miss. Most of the service workers and the business gal in the office are very nice, but sometimes the owner is sarcastic and condescending and sometimes he's nice and speaks with etiquette and respect. It makes me on the fence about continuing to go there. I've gone there for years and it seems like it's become more frequent the past few years we've been. They are nice to have coupons on the internet, but can be really strict about using them. If you forget up front when you drop your car off they WILL NOT honor them in any way shape or form. This became problematic when my husband and I were juggling who dropped it off and such. We had a decently priced repair and they would not honor their coupon at the end of the day, which was frustrating. read more

I decided to call the shop and ask if we purchased the part could they just charge us labor a man says sure but the cost of labor will be double, I advised my mother of the rip off they were running but she had already had her car towed there so my mother spoke with the owners wife who tried to assure that this was the best price then they offered to give her a discount. When they finished the work the quoted the same price from the beginning my mother then asked about the discount to which the man because of your daughter I won't give a penny off. Fantastic mechanics! I know next to nothing about cars, including my own. These guys answer all my questions thoroughly in language I can understand. And it never seems like they mind doing it, either. I never get the sense that they are telling me things they think I should already know (though likely I should). I first used them to inspect a couple of used cars I was considering buying. They did a great job and provided me with a ton of advice beyond the quality of the individual cars. In fact, on their advice I went with the car I liked a little less because they showed me how the long term maintenance costs on that car would be cheaper. I think they generally charge about $75 for this inspection, which was worth it for me to have an independent opinion. And, because they looked at two cars for me, they voluntarily gave me a discount on the inspection for the second one. Based on this experience, I took my car in for its regular maintenance. It was simple to set up an appointment with only a day or two of notice. Again, they were great about giving me information up front and allowing me to make decisions about what work I wanted done. They answered basic questions and broke down their advice into work that should be done at this point and what could wait a couple of months. The work was done in the time I was told it would be and they were nice enough to give me a ride to the local Starbucks so I could wait there. Afterward, I got more advice about when I should do follow-up maintenance (includng the mechanic's 'ideal scenario' recommendations and recommendations based on what manufacturers generally advise). And, I confirmed with him that the shop recycles the oil after an oil change. The shop isn't all that close where I live, but their customer service, attention to detail, and the quality of their work makes the trip more than worthwhile. read more

I cannot emphasize how much on how wonderful this auto repair place is! We just moved to the area from California, and my 2002 4Runner took quite a beating hauling a large trailer on our move here. On top of that, it was badly in need of a tuneup. We noticed it was starting to act a bit funny so time for some TLC. We found this place via Yelp, and bought it in. I was dreading the news... totally expected a $1,500 bill but at the end of the day, the bill was only... $338? A total tuneup? Yep. Nothing wrong with it? Not at all, just needed a fuel filter replacement, an oil change and new spark plugs. Seriously? Yes, ma'am. WHEW! (OK, I've been in California for almost 12 years, my last tuneup bill was $1,200!) That was last month. Yesterday the engine light popped on. Crap. My husband remembered he was supposed to replace the gas cap but never did, so he swung by AutoZone to buy one, and then to Castleton Auto... yep, it was the old gas cap causing a "leak". No charge for the diagnostic check. Engine light now off. My husband was in and out in 10 minutes. When they say "Hoosier Hospitality", I can definitely say you'll find it here! Wouldn't recommend. There were a lot of good reviews, so I was finally glad to find an honest mechanic. Brought my car in to fix air conditioning. He told me it would cost $1,100 to fix it. He charged me $125 anyway. I also asked if he would be a fair mechanic. He seemed quite irritated at me asking. Needless to say, I am still looking for a fair, good and honest mechanic. Could not repair my car after 2 weeks and $800 - This guy said to me that he was SWAG'ing it (scientific wild ass guess). He was just replacing parts and if it fixed it great, if not, replace another part. He had if for over 2 weeks. On two occasions, he said it was fixed but it wasn't. Each time I paid my bill. Finally, he said he would no longer work on it because the car was in bad shape (pampered '94 Mustang GT). I took it to a Ford dealer. It was fixed in one day. The item that the dealership replaced on the vehicle had nothing to do with what Castleton Auto Repair was doing. A total rip off. read more

I arrived to have my car inspected at 8:00am (without an appointment) and I was out of there by 9:00. In that time, they not only managed to fit in a time to inspect my car, but they gave me two possible options for what I could have done to have the leak fixed in my car. One option would cost $100 and the other would cost $700. Tobi wanted to try the $100 option first, because he knew it would save me money. He was very professional and kind.
