Spent one night here in Macroom, (Maigh Chromtha), Co. Cork, which once had long a tradition of being a hotbed of republican resistance, from Cromwell to Collins!
The Castle Hotel. which is a very welcoming 4 star hotel, of over 50 rooms is just outside the small market town, and refers to the nearby 13th C. castle.
It's situated on the N22 road, 26km west of Cork City, and has a 3-story, 19th C. exterior with a very modern & attractive open plan interior, all looks very very new too.
4 of us stayed here, and we each had our own room, which contained a nice Queen sized double bed, (their description)!
As it was out of season quiet, (we stayed there late October), there must have been an Autumn offer on, as would have been paying each upwards of €120 usually, and I know our 'boss' would've given birth to octuplet kittens if he'd had to pay that!
Very smart spacious rooms with very good sized equally plush ensuite facilities. Good tv reception, and tea/coffee making stuff in room, and importantly for me free broadband connection in room. I even managed to tap onto the wifi hotspot, in my room despite friendly advice that the lobby was the only place.
They were all very friendly staff, when you could find them. The early evening we arrived, the chap on reception was on his own manning both the adjoining busy bar, (which is quite a few lengths away), as well as the quiet reception area, but he coped cheerfully & brilliantly.
Nice breakfast room, but from what oldcrazy77 says in his review, the quality must have deteriated alot!
I'm a veggie but my sausage & bacon loving mates were really not impressed, on this front, nor by rubbery fried eggs either, However there was much merriment in the form of my vegetarian option when it came, which although it contained no bacon or sausage, was piled heavy with black & white puddings!
A great place to explore County Cork by car from, out of season, if you want to stay in very good value for money 4 star luxury. read more
