Caspers is a great place to go for drink specials; other than that, avoid it. The food is mediocre, at best, and overpriced for what you get. We went for breakfast and the eggs were cold, biscuits raw and coffee bitter ($2.50 a cup, I might add). The worst part is the service. The hostess was rude and frowned the whole time. They don't make you feel welcome and do only the bare minimum. If you want to drink, go there. If you want to eat, go somewhere else. read more

I only mention this because aside from the less than warm hash browns, we were warmly greeted and looked after very attentively by rookie server, Stacey. It is a sports bar atmosphere with a Perkins decor. Casual dress, but expect to hear everything going on in the bar. Food quality is for sure worth trying again!!! The BARN BURGER IS DYNAMITE! My girlfriend and I entered the bar at 8:30 walked around and chose to sit in the restaurant. We re-approached the host, and requested a table for two on the restaurant side. After her body language said no, and she had rolled her eye's upon hearing our request. ( She apparently REALLY wanted us to sit in the bar.) We where given the table, and sat down. I then for the next hour and forty-five minutes witnessed my host walk around the establishment carrying on a conversation about incest, and her acceptability if your only half related. She walked up to a servers table, opened the check, commented on how garbage the tip was, then proceeded to the kitchen and made ANOTHER comment about the tip. I had asked a gentlemen if the fish dish he had "was appetizing as it looked?". The HOST...I know again... Clearly has some sort of relationship as she stopped to have conversation, sit on the chair with her legs in the air / sideways and finally jumping like a kindergartner practically on his lap. I saw her touch, get close, and leap hug another male employee later on. Vaguely summing up her intimate conversations and interaction with the staff. ( I KNOW THIS SOUNDS MADE UP , I swear on my HONORABLE DISCHARGE this is 100% accurate. ) My server, I felt it was an off night. Overall I didn't mind her service but a filled glass more often would have been nice. As a server myself I would like to give a verbal tip for her or any waiter. Touching the table is a "TERM" it does NOT mean break my contact barrier...not once but twice. Unacceptable. Not impressed at all; I came here to eat, not to drink, so my experience is based off of being seating in the dining area. This is a blue jeans t-shirt kind of place. That's not a bad thing, but if you overdress you'll definitely stick out! Dining area was pretty empty when I came, but clean and not too noisy. Ordered drinks, I stuck with water and my friend ordered a beer. Immediately after receiving his drink, we both saw specs floating around in his beer, clearly not part of his drink and too many to count. We asked for another drink and received it around 7 minutes later. No apology; rough start. Food was boring. Nothing stood out to us; he got a steak, I got a buffalo chicken sandwich. The nicest thing about Caspers was our waitress. She was a pure delight, outgoing and very friendly. We ordered a steak and the rib plate. Neither were seasoned at all. The ribs fell overdone the bone to the point of being over cooked and the sauce was definitely not bbq. It was a tomato paste concoction that wasn't appetizing at all. The steak was tender and cooked properly but was without seasoning leaving it bland. Their famous Au Gratin potatoes were nothing special either. No seasoning and bland. The cheese was a powder base. Stopped in and sat down at a table with a couple friends. It was about 7 PM and we got our drinks server right away. The server was leaving so we cashed out and said the next server we check in with us. It was 7:15. Our drinks were empty buy 7:30. We asked the server walking by if we could order another round. Caspers post fire menu is a bit different but pretty true to the menu before their fire a couple years ago. Classic menu including steak, fish and chops. I always mix up the 4 or 5 steak options but prefer the mignon overall. Even on a Saturday night at 7 they can squeeze a table in for you. My overall review of Caspers is that you can get a really good meal at times or just average. They brought back the old school decor back as well. The food at Casper's is always reliably excellent. 7 of us had dinner there this week and the food was superb! I had a shrimp dinner (choice of kind): 6 huge succulent coconut shrimp, and the meal came with a big, fresh salad (or soup), freshly baked bread,choice of potato, and a large quantity of fresh steamed vegetables. Where can you get all that a restaurant these days? My tablemate had a steak which he said was perfect. He has always had good steaks here. This review is for the bar area only. My drinking buddy and myself are like migrants when it comes to Happy Hour. When we find a good one, we stay. When things change in a way that is other than positive, we look elsewhere. So, being more than tired of the previous establishments we frequent, we happened upon Casper's. Agreeing with other Yelpers, it's a bit like an antique with the big barn for a bar. I can only imagine the heating bill. Per my usual lack of remembering names, I can't be sure of the name of either bartender. The one that worked the weekend was a bit of a jerk and needed a shower/deodorant. The other was absolutely on the ball with a great personality and attitude that you just knew why the regulars came on that particular day (Tuesday). I'm mostly certain his name was Tony. I love going to a place where the bartender knows the names of the regulars, even if I'm not a regular. Our first time in was not during happy hour. While gazing at the menu, my eyes happened upon the prices. Don't confuse me for a cheapskate, but I often think restaurant owners value the taste of their food a little higher than it actually is. This place was the exception. My initial thoughts being it's hard to mess up a quesadilla, we ordered one of those. Asking the bartender some additional questions about different menu items, a few regular patrons chimed in (thankfully) about how good the burgers were. I tell you what, I damn near bit the tops of my fingers off eating the Mississippi Bleu burger. Exceptionally tasty. My drinking partner was equally pleased with his basic cheeseburger. Not forgetting the quesadillas, I was nearly in awe at how much there was. Originally from Lake North conf. and was out for a wedding. My gf, a former Minneapolis "Southie" and I were headed to airport. I said I need a Walleye fix and she said there is this old school place in Eagan. It wasn't busy for lunch and has that divey feel. When I lived here yrs. ago those were the best places. I ordered two orders of walleye fingers and the walleye sliders. ABSOLUTELY, awesome!!! The sliders were about the closest things to a shore lunch, I've had in years. I do not know where the people posting here that the food is mediocre and overpriced are used to eating, but let me tell you our family has been eating at this Cherokee and the one on W 7th St for 16 years now and have never been disappointed. If you are used to eating at sports bar type places, then yes I could see where the prices and the ambiance might not suit you. You have to be able to appreciate a kitschy decor that does not have TV's blasting for background noise. The service and quality of food is amazing! Remember you do get what you pay for. So, if you are looking to watch a game while celebrating an anniversary, birthday etc than this place is not for you. It has romance, charm and wonderful food!! I have been to Casper's twice. Once with a large party and the second time, with two guests. The first time I was very impressed. A small area has been transformed to an elegant dining room situated within the restaurant. The table linens were crisp and clean. My salad was fabulous. Very impressed with the portion and the prices were somewhat reasonable. If I had to review that visit, it would have been a five. The second visit, within a month, was less impressive. We sat in a booth and I couldn't help but notice that the booth appeared shabby and run down. I guess without table linens this is to be expected. Do they ever clean the fabric on the booth bench? Our table bread was hard. My food was good. Another member of our table had ordered the French toast. She would comment later that she had made a poor selection. Maybe they used the older table bread to make the French toast? There is room for improvement here. Suggest the restaurant upgrades the interior for a cleaner look or cleans the booth fabric and carpeting. read more

On Aug. 4, my wife and I went to Casper's for their prime rib Saturday special. The food is nothing spectacular, but it is almost always dependably good. What caught our attention, though, were the flies that continually buzzed around us. Their favorite landing spot was our bread basket. My wife unfolded a cocktail napkin and covered the basket. That worked well because the flies never managed to get under the napkin. I was going to call this to the attention of the waitress who was being kept busy. When she stopped by for the obligatory "How's everything", she went away so quickly I could not get a word out. Stopped in with my family this morning for breakfast. When we walked in we were overwhelmed with the smell of cleaning products. We literally thought there was a swimming pool in the building-yuck! Although no one greeted us- do we seat ourselves or??...eventually someone came out of the kitchen and brought us to a table. The restaurant was very cold. My wife went to use the restroom and there was a guy in there cleaning a stall- no sign to indicate the bathrooms as closed for cleaning. At first she thought she may have walked in to the wrong restroom-She opted to wait until she got home. We ordered a couple Bloody Marys- the condiments looked really old- rubbery pickle and very old olives! A few little changes could have made this a much better experience. Caspers is a much better alternative for a night out compared to Wild Bills in Apple Valley. It's less popular and the crowd is a little bit older, but that's not really a negative aspect about it. My husband and I had an open house style reception here just a couple weeks ago in the banquet room; and everything was absolutely phenomenal! The banquet rooms had a great set up so our guests could comfortably flow through the room; the staff was amazing! Our servers did an excellent job making sure our guests were never without any drinks, etc. as well as checking in about the refills of food so they never got low/cold! Tony did a fantastic job of answering any/all questions we had while setting the date for our reception; and keeping in communication up until the big day! Casper's is a cool place with a very fun atmosphere. The food was pretty good and service was decent. However, my group and I started drinking there at 8 and Stayed until close. We each ordered 8-10 drinks and they were insanely watered down. We mentioned to the waitress that our drinks were weak with next to no alcohol and she said that's just how bars are. Just to be able to tell there was alcohol in the drinks we had to order doubles. Fun atmosphere but if you are coming here to drink I would suggest somewhere else unless you like being sober. read more

I have to give it one star. I won't be back. I went for Mother's Day brunch. The place was packed -- usually a good sign. And while I didn't love the long buffet line -- about 20 minutes -- if I had ordered off the menu, I would have had the same wait time. No my problem was much more basic: poor food; weak service. There were two main buffet lines: entrees and sweets/sides. The entrees were promising: scrambled eggs; eggs benedict; waffles; sausage (kielbasa); ribs; prime rib. Of these, eggs benedict was tasty, scrambled eggs were dry and overcooked, waffles tasted like a dry sponge (only less sweet), the ribs were "seasoned" with an awful ketchup sauce and were too fatty, and the prime rib: inexcusably overcooked. As I mention above, the place was filled to the rafters. Literally. The second floor of the barn was sold out. Nearly every table had 8-10 guests. I've been to plenty of restaurants that are oversold and that go on a long wait. We all have. Most are run much more efficiently and in a better way than this one was. Each server had to have had 6 tables at one time. The Moms at my table -- there were several -- had a tough time getting a drink, silverware and etc. The servers and busers did not remove plates in a prompt manner. It was just -- it was chaotic. Would I go back? No. There are too many good restaurants in this town and in this part of the Twin Cities. Sure, it was Mother's Day and that is often a big revenue day for restaurants because many of us like to go out on that day. But well run restaurants thrive when they sell all the seats in the place. They had the dining areas packed. Big groups had people who couldn't get in or out of their seat without more than one person getting up. People were seated at the end of tables, so I felt like I was invading their personal space by trying to get by on my way to the buffet. Way too many people seated at one time. The food was mediocre. The hot foods didn't impress, and they were serving prime rib that was clearly undercooked. Prime rib is supposed to be rare, but it's not supposed to be raw. This joint clearly isn't equipped to handle a buffet meal, and our large group paid far too much to be packed in like sardines for a meal together. I mean it when I say we'll go to somewhere cheap and unspectacular before we'll pay $16-17 per adult for a horrible Mother's Day brunch. I waited over 5 minutes before I got annoyed and went up to the redheaded bartender and I politely asked "Miss, is there are server on the patio tonight?" She replied "yup". She then turned back around and continued whatever she was doing on the computer. So I went back to my table, assuming she would tell the server we were waiting. I assumed wrong. We waited another 5 minutes and still no one came up to our table. So we got up and left. I have been in the service industry for over 10 years and never once have I treated/been treated so terribly. Good food, service and prices. What needs improvement is the handicapped parking. The paint is very faint and need to be repainted.
