Over hyped and service, meh. We had dinner at the Riverside Food Lab and walked to the Mission Inn afterwards because the Christmas lights were still up, until the end of this weekend (first weekend of January). My friend mentioned that Casey's Cupcakes was nearby and that Casey had won Cupcake Wars in 2011 (almost 10 years ago). The line was about 15 people deep and stayed that way for most of the time we were there. Truthfully, my first impression is that it would over hyped and I was right in the dot. The price of the cupcakes were to be expected, $3.75 and up but there are no prices listed with each cupcake so I am unsure which ones are more expensive. The batter was dry, from the two cupcakes that I tried, and the frosting barely helped keep each bite moist. I am not sure how she won the competition, or the others just were even drier. A scary thought... Cupcake stores around my area are so much better, moist and flavorful without the overpowering sweetness of the frosting. The service was also meh, only one person sorting the cupcakes and one person at the cashier. We asked for two separate bags because my friend bought me a cupcake and I do not live with them so it made sense to have separate bags, especially as we were strolling around the area and it would be easier to hold. I ended up at this cute little cupcake shop cause I was at Mission Inn for the Festival of Lights. The Festival of Lights literally led you to the front of their doorsteps. The cupcake shop is super adorable. Since I went on the last day of the new year, I decided I can enjoy one last, over the top, sweet before the new year. I decided my last 2017 cupcake would be the crownie. The crownie has a bottom layer of brownie and the second layer of vanilla bean cake. The cupcake is also topped with milk chocolate frosting. Yes, this cupcake was super rich. My last cupcake was not just a cupcake, it was a cupcake topped with soft serve ice cream. Who wouldn't love ice cream and cupcake together???!!! Of course, I couldn't say no. In the end, I thought the cupcake was okay. I didn't really enjoy the frosting too much and I didn't taste anything too different from all the other cupcake's places. However, the winner here for me was the soft serve ice cream. I just couldn't get enough of it. It was some good ice cream. We were just in Riverside for the Festival of Lights and also our wedding anniversary trip so getting a nice dessert was a must! I was doing a bit of research and noticed that my Yelp friend Lianne K. reviewed the places and posted cool pix (thanks Lianne!) so we started craving for for Casey's Cupcakes, we were sold. Once we got to their cute shop outside Mission Inn, we weren't disappointed, their selection was great, it made it hard to choose, prices are very reasonable, customer service is great, everyone working here was nice and helpful. We settled for the Grandma's German Cake and the Strawberry one with added soft serve ice-cream injection - an extra $ (had to spoil ourselves). The cupcakes are delicious, the strawberry one was moist, a tad sweet for me, but the German Cake one melted in our mouth and it could have started a tiny fight over it (wait, it's our anniversary, better be civil) since we shared everything. I'd go back and try other cool flavors. If you're in Riverside, put Casey's Cupcakes on your must do list. It's such a sweet treat! read more

My family and I decided to trek over to the Mission Inn for the Festival of Lights. We got there early, around 5pm, so thankfully there weren't a whole lot of people yet. I saw a short line for Casey's Cupcakes and decided to hop in. Last year when I came the light line was waaaaay out the door. I figured this was my chance. I've seen Casey on the food network and I wanted to see what the fuss was about. First off, branding is on point. It's pink and super girly. The store front although small - it is soooo pink you know who's cupcake shop this is. Cupcakes are the first thing you see. There were 2 or 3 other customers in. All the workers greeted me, but nothing envoked a "welcome" feeling. Everyone seemed monotone. They told me all about the cupcakes, prices, and everything else they had today. I bought 4 cupcakes: Red Velvet, Dark Chocolate, the Confetti, and Peanut Butter. Everything looks visually pleasing. Every cupcake comes in its own box. my family and I travelled back to the LA area that night and I don't think the cupcakes took too well sitting on the floor of the backseat in the car. I gave my family the red velvet amd the chocolate cakes. The confetti fell sideways and got smushed. The corners of the box squeezed in and try to keep the cakes in place. I think Sprinkles has a better box design (but you do have to pay extra for it). So if you're traveling with the cakes, keep them in a spot where they won't move. The cake I've bitten into is the confetti. After a few hours the cake still had moisture and wasn't dry. I normally don't like a whole lot of frosting. The frosting wasn't too sweet and was lighter than what I thought it would be. I can taste the vanilla, but the cupcake didn't amaze me. Beautifully decorated cupcakes with lots of flavors to choose from. I had their apple pie cupcake which was decorated to look like an apple pie. It was even filled with diced up cinnamon apples. My wife had their strawberry & cream one and my mom had their coconut one. They were pricey at $4.50 but they were very artistic looking, big size, and very high quality. Ingredients were natural but service was very artificial. The employees had memorized scripts they droned out in monotone without using any of their own opinions to answer questions or make suggestions. Was very annoying. This place is located next to the Mission Inn and well, there was noting really special about this place at all. Ordered a Red Velvet Cupcake and it was nothing special, tasted like an ordinary Red Velvet. Although, there was a LOT of icing on top of the cupcake, a bit too much if you ask me. Too much icing on the cupcake, made the cupcake overly sweeter than it needed to be. Need to lay off on placing too much icing on the cupcakes. I've been to Casey's Cupcakes about six times in the last couple of months since I moved to the Riverside area. The cupcakes are so cute and delicious! They're not your average cupcake, they're ice cream-infused cupcakes! Basically, they inject ice cream into the center of the cupcakes, which I had never even heard of before I tried them here. What an amazing concept! They also sell cookie dough, ice cream shakes, and they even cater events! Their packaging and presentation are 10/10 on point. Everything looks pink and beautiful; you can definitely tell the owner takes a lot of pride in their business. I spoke with one of the employees and they said that the owner Casey, of Casey's Cupcakes, is the daughter of the owners of the Mission Inn. What a cool background story! Casey is blonde and beautiful and you can see her photo hanging on the wall in the store. I love how the interior of the store is decorated; it's very inviting and fun to hang out here with friends. They also have outdoor seating available. So far, I've tried their Marvelous Milk Chocolate, which is my favorite flavor. I've also had their Granny's German Chocolate flavor, which is my second favorite. Overall, they have 16 different cupcake flavors, which also include Sassy Strawberry, Beach Boy, Creamy Carrot, Caribbean Coconut, Luscious Lemon, Peanut Butter Pizazz, and even one for your dog called Pampered Pet Treat! I think I've seen it now haha. I love Casey's Cupcakes so much. I use to have no problem driving the distance to get a cupcake from this spot. There was even one time I called and asked if they had my favorite flavor before arriving.The original owner was there at the time and said, "We only have one, but If you're driving from that distance, we will save it," and she did- it was delicious. Well, today me and my daughter went and unfortunately the cupcakes we ordered were a huge disappointment. I knew something was up when we walked in about 30 minutes before closing, the display was full of cupcakes and they didn't even look like we remembered. I made a generic selection, asked about another I noticed and the young lady at the register said it was her favorite. I looked at it again, and decided against trying it. I asked if the owner was still the same, and was told, no, to me, that was another red flag. Then, a lady that came from the back, politely chimed in and said, "The owner is different, but the recipe is the same." I said, "oh, okay." Needless to say, it is not. Mind you, our tastebuds are a bit advanced-yes, I'm "tooting our horns," but it is what it is. If you have nothing to compare this place to, you might just enjoy them. I don't want to bash this place, I'd actually like to try and help them get it right by giving them the details of what I think went wrong. Clearly, when Casey left, she took her recipes with her, shorted them, or maybe they just aren't preparing them properly, I don't know, but something isn't right. My daughter bakes and when I asked her if she'd want to return she gave me a hard no, along with what she thinks went wrong. Ah yes! If you have that sweet tooth, Casey's Cupcakes is the place to go! The store is colorfully decorated with pink window shades outside. Winner of the 2011 Cupcake Wars, photos of the very blonde-haired Casey and her rise to fame and glamor are all over the walls. Having not seen those episodes of Cupcake Wars, the story of her history and the aura that the pink photos project unfortunately hints at an overabundance of privilege. Large jars of Casey's candies for $9.95 per pound are on the wall. A whole array of cupcakes are behind the window counter including peanut butter pizzaz, sassy strawberry, decadent dark chocolate, sugar-free coconut vanilla and of course our favorite rockin' red velvet cupcakes! We picked up a lavender macaron and a red velvet cupcake. The lavender macaron had a nice crispy cookie exterior and a hint of lavender scent to it. The red velvet cupcake was a moist and rich cupcake with an incredibly sweet white frosting topped with a dark chocolate figurine of Casey! The box that it came in was beautifully configured and opened up like a puzzle toy. So sweet and so delicious, we even made a return visit to Casey's Cupcakes later that night! The customers ahead of us had picked the last of the red velvet cupcakes when we entered the second time. So we actually left disappointed and empty handed after being teased with cupcakes earlier. However, it was probably a blessing in disguise as we avoided the symbolism of cupcake decadence and spending additional dollars to make the rich become richer! read more

This is definitely a three-star cupcake place. Maybe even a two and a half. The place looks like a five star, it's very pretty and bright inside the cupcakes are decorated wonderfully, they even have cute little names for each cupcakes. I ordered the cupcake shake, which is a cupcake blended with ice cream with whipped cream on the top. I was very disappointed!! It may have been made with ice cubes as well. Instead of being smooth with ice cream and a little bit of the cupcake blended inside nicely it was icy. Definitely not how I like my shakes. This idea is not new or original to them. I have had this in other states and it was amazingly delicious. Unfortunately this place fell short. I have been into this location multiple times, couple years prior. I was finally in town last night and decided to get a Gluten Free Cupcake (I have celiac disease). Usually their GF cupcake is pretty good and worth the price, but this time it just fell extremely short. I do a lot of GF baking at home so I can understand how tricky it is to get things jussst right, but I was disappointed with Casey's given the price and the fact that it's so heavily invested in. The GF Chocolate cupcake tasted dry, very dry. But it wasn't dry and crumbly, just dry but still stuck together? The frosting itself had no flavor. Not even sweet. Just tasted like nothing. If you're looking for a one time treat or bragging rights that you've tried a cupcake brand that was on Cupcake Wars then this might be the spot for you. Decided to drop by there tonight while killing some time downtown. The place is usually pretty busy so I figured they must be pretty good. The store has a cute presentation, very pink and girly (kinda Barbie-esque as other reviews have pointed out) and the cupcakes look yummy. The girl who rang me up was really kind and helpful so the customer service is definitely a 5 out of 5. However, the cupcakes are mediocre at best and pretty inconsistent. I got two cupcakes: a German chocolate cupcake and the Caribbean Coconut one. I ate the German chocolate a couple of minutes after purchasing and was incredibly disappointed to find that it was dry. There's way more topping than cupcake too. I ended up eating the coconut one about 3-4 hours after purchase and was surprised to find it was moist as well as falling apart (the top fell off after two bites into the cupcake). The topping to cake ratio was the same as the German chocolate one and for the life of me I couldn't figure out what flavor the cupcake itself actually was. Like, yes, it's labeled a coconut cupcake, but the cake didn't take coconutty, if that makes sense. At the end of the day, it's nothing worth going out of your way for and it's definitely nothing to write home about. Came to visit the light festival with the family before it ends. Never been here before and came across this place while walking around. I figured I'd get the girls some nice cupcakes. The place looks very well decorated from the inside and out. My daughters got excited as soon as we walked inside and saw the many cupcakes available. The staff is very friendly and helpful with explaining the many different cupcakes they have. The cupcakes are very fresh as they are super soft. The toppings are very good and not too sweet which is perfect for me because I can't stand too much sweetness. The cupcakes are not cheap as I paid around $16 for 3 cupcakes. We have loved Casey's Cupcakes for years!!! The sugar free coco vanilla is my favorite! I think a lot of people love it too, because it will sell out sometimes! Other noteworthy flavors- peanut butter, strawberry, crownie... delicious! I wish they made keto/GF flavors that were also equally delicious! They have one GF flavor, chocolate, that is awful :( I have tried the ice cream infused cupcakes, omg what a treat! I'm not much of a "sweets" person, but sometimes life calls for a cupcake. We were staying in the area for a friend's birthday, and thought, why not! let's get her a cupcake! This place had cute designs and flavors. We picked up a white vanilla cupcake with a milk chocolate tiara on it for the birthday girl, and while we were at it, we also grabbed the amaretto strawberry cupcake (cute heart on top) and the decadent chocolate cupcake (lots of chocolate curls). We actually ate the amaretto strawberry cupcake the day after we bought it. The cake was still moist and the frosting was top notch soft. I love the amaretto flavoring, but wasn't sure how it would taste with strawberry. Hint: It was delicious. We ate the decadent chocolate one two days after buying it. We did seal it in the box with a plastic baggie around it to try to keep the elements off it. Again, perfection. A bit messier with the tiny curls, but fabulous. It is pricey, but for a once in awhile splurge for something sweet, this place is quick and easy to provide. This place is actually one of the few that I'll keep in mind regarding their frosting. For everyone referring to it being "store bought", I have to say no. Store bought brands give me a reaction due to the chemicals, but mostly because of the hydrogenated oils. How do you not automatically taste that with the store brands? It's almost like, for lack of a better thought, a metallic taste at the back of the tongue that coats the inside of your mouth. This place is usually great and friendly customer service. Today we went in, the two girls working we're not friendly and kept rushing us. There was nobody else in the store. My daughter got ice cream and I got a cupcake and we went back to the Mission Inn. I tried my cupcake and it was really dry even the frosting was dry. I gave them a call and asked if I could've possibly got an old cupcake and she said no we make them every day. So I said do you throw them away every day she said no they're good for three days. I told her obviously I got an old cupcake because mine was really dry she said OK bye. We will go somewhere else next time. read more
