My fascination for Navajo & Hopi history & culture began in the 70s, so I had to stop. Antique Hopi & Navajo items dot the walls & hang from ceilings & are mixed in with newly crafted items in the cases. Carl, the owner, inherited the shop from his father. An old photo of Carl & his dad is proudly displayed on a kiosk, as well as a photo of his great grandfather, black & white photo of his grandad Outside the entrance, a Vietnam veteran & Navajo native (sorry did not get his name) paints beautiful art, the colors reminiscent of 60s & 70s era native art. What a treat to watch him work. If you're into rocks & petrified wood, Carl has buckets. Also polished stone jewelry pieces, including raw amethyst, turquoise & other semi precious stones. Hopi & Navajo artesian crafted beaded cuffs, hair clips. & other items... including really cool Carabiners with beadwork. I bought a couple for the grandkids & a pretty cuff for Someone commented negatively about the prices. Go buy your souvenirs from the dollar store, made in China on a machine.

There are a couple of listings for this shop so make sure to go to 357 Navajo Blvd. When we arrived the shop was closed but a note on the door instructed 'potential customers' to call. The owner Leo arrived in 5 minutes as promised and greeted us warmly. Inside there are three jewelry cases filled to the brim with copper, silver, and turquoise jewelry. You can find Hopi, Navajo, and Zuni handmade jewelry, ceramics, and textile pieces at Nakai's. This was the only trading post we stopped in Holbrook and is certainly worth a visit. Leo is knowledgeable about his trade and was happy to explain the differences in turquoise to me, producing the map you can see in my photos. He was patient in helping me select a pair of earrings and checking out rings in my size. Be sure to visit Nakai's and it's reasonably priced wares.

Leo is a national gem!

Crystal Forest is not only a private gift shop NOT associated with the National Park, but they also a campground. Check this out if you are traveling with an RV or tent because Petrified and Painted Desert do not allow camping to my knowledge. The museum is near the RV parking area. A separate, larger gift shop is on the other side of the National Park entrance. I'm a fan of this shop because they sell a variety of petrified wood that you are not allowed to take from the parks. "Then how do they get the petrified wood?" My oldest asked me. I did not inquire about this with staff members. It was so dark and I knew I would be soon approaching winter storms, so I wanted to get back on the road. Restrooms were available. This private gift shop is not part of the national park and is located outside the south entrance. They have a really nice collection of colorful petrified wood here. It is illegal to take petrified wood from the park, so this place is a great option to purchase some. Next to the gift shop is a campground with approximately 20 spots. Most sites have sheltered picnic tables. You can camp with an RV, tent or sleep in one of their teepees. Just check with the gift shop for availability. There is no camping inside Petrified Forest National Park, so this is your best option.

It wasn't after I took my bead purchases to the counter to pay that I saw the blown glass beads in the case. $20 for the hearts and $25+ for the owls.
