I was referred to Dr Gupta by Mom's primary care physician to see if there was some other reason Mom couldn't move her arm. His intern examined my mother. When Dr Gupta came into the room an hour later, he said your Mom has a torn rotator cuff so when do you want to do surgery? When I said we can't do surgery on a patient with severe dementia, the anesthesia would escalate her mental decline. He said then, you don't want surgery, ok I'm done and proceeded to leave. Now I had already waited 1 hour in the patient room and I didn't wait that long to have a 30 sec conversation. I said wait a minute. You aren't hearing me. What are my mother's options ? How did her rotator cuff tear. He then took 45 seconds to show me her x-rays showing arthritis and bone spurs and her age contributed to the tear and said all I can do is refer you to physical therapy if you don't want surgery. Ok fine. We are opting for PT. I just found his abruptness off putting and I don't think he bothered with looking at the patient's mental condition before he just proclaimed she needs surgery. If he had taken the time to review her file, he would have seen surgery on a severely mentally compromised patient where anesthesia would impact her cognition further was not a good option. Essentially his bedside manners are terrible. He's abrupt and I felt since he couldn't make money off my mother, he wasn't wasting his time. It was a busy Friday night, yet the staff treated my father with urgency, dignity, and genuine compassion. What could have been a chaotic and impersonal experience instead felt human and attentive. After we arrived, the ER team worked tirelessly -- not just medically, but administratively -- coordinating with insurance, social workers, and case management. When my father became stuck in the ER due to complications with his prior facility refusing readmission, the UCLA team did not give up on him. They continued advocating, communicating, and ultimately helped secure placement in a better facility after nearly a week in limbo. That level of follow-through meant everything to our family. I especially want to recognize Nurse Claire in the ER. Her kindness and humanity were extraordinary. She gave my father blankets, made sure he was comfortable, and even offered me blankets, food, and water during a long and emotional night. She cleaned my father up with such care and dignity. After 10 hours of uncertainty, she brought calm, reassurance, and genuine bedside compassion that I will never forget. I also want to thank Dr. Carson Dangberg for advocating for my father during a very unfortunate situation. His professionalism and willingness to step in made a real difference. In one of the hardest moments for our family, this ER team reminded us that healthcare can still be compassionate and patient-centered. We are deeply grateful.

High-Risk Pregnancy Care Felt Unsafe, Rushed, and Poorly Managed:…read more I am writing this review because my family's experience with UCI Labor & Delivery was extremely disappointing and scary, especially because my sister was considered a high-risk pregnancy due to her age, diabetes, and other medical concerns. My sister was originally supposed to be induced at 5:00 AM on Sunday, 4/26, but there were no beds available. Later that day, around 6:00 PM, the hospital called and told her to come in around 9:00 PM. When she arrived Sunday night around 9:00 PM, she was brought in, but instead of starting the induction process and properly monitoring her as a high-risk patient, she was discharged around 1:00 AM because they needed the beds. This was extremely upsetting and concerning. A high-risk pregnant patient should not be sent home in the middle of the night because of bed availability. By around 8:00 AM the next morning, she started bleeding and had to rush back to the hospital. A nurse apologized and said they were sorry, which only made the situation feel even more concerning because it seemed like they knew the situation should not have been handled that way. Once she was back at the hospital, the experience continued to feel chaotic and poorly managed. The hospital appeared to be short-staffed, and communication was not reassuring. Her epidural was delayed because the doctor kept getting pulled away. She was in significant pain, and for a high-risk patient, the delay in pain management felt unacceptable. By Monday, 4/27 at 12:49 PM, she was around 4-5 cm dilated and waiting for medication to help her dilate more. Around 3:51 PM, contractions were getting stronger, and she was waiting for the epidural. Then around 6:25 PM, we were told she needed an emergency C-section. This was terrifying for our family, especially after everything that had already happened: the delayed induction, being sent home due to lack of beds, having to rush back because of bleeding, short staffing, delayed epidural, and poor communication. Thankfully, the baby was born Monday evening and is okay, and we are extremely grateful for that. However, the process leading up to the delivery was stressful, scary, and poorly handled. I understand hospitals get busy, but bed shortages should never come before the safety of a high-risk pregnant patient. My sister should not have been discharged at 1:00 AM, only to have to rush back by 8:00 AM bleeding. This experience left our family feeling like patient safety, communication, and high-risk pregnancy care were not prioritized the way they should have been.

I really liked that Dr. Bhatia didn't try to convince me to have surgery immediately (like a couple of other surgeons had done). Instead, we tried physical therapy and light medications to help the pain. Unfortunately, they didn't work, so I ended up having surgery. It went great. I woke up and my pain was gone. Recovery was pretty easy, and I haven't felt better for as long as I can remember. Not only was Dr. Bhatia an outstanding surgeon, but his bedside manner and compassion made me and family fell at ease in a very stressful time. We couldn't be happier with the care.

During the pre-op in clinic process, I met Dr. Sabin Shah, a resident. What a gem he was to turn out to be! Because I have a mechanical heart valve, out- patient surgeries become 5-8 day hospital stays for me since they have to deal with anti-coagulant issues resulting from my need to take Coumadin (a blood thinner) and manage a window of time safe to protect my valve and also safe to perform surgery. So I basically become a perfectly healthy individual in the hospital walking around attached to an IV infusing me with Heparin (faster acting anticoagulant that is administered via IV) waiting for my blood levels to become therapeutic. I've had this mechanical valve for 12 years and have had, unfortunately at least four surgeries since then. I self test my blood at home and under my cardiologists guidance, I self dose according to my cardio's guidelines. As a result of this, I have a history and knowledge of how much the doses need to be to attain therapeutic levels. Suffice it to say, after surgery there was a huge disconnect between what the in- hospital pharmacy recommended and what my experience had been with prior "loading doses" of Coumadin. Enter Dr. Shah. Dr. Shah saw me every single day of my five day hospital stay, sometimes twice daily when required. When I brought the dosing issue to his attention-he was ON IT! He consulted professionally with the hospital departments needed and I received the proper "loading doses" required to safely and quickly get my blood levels to a therapeutic level. There ended up being a few other "hiccups" with regards to medication and the pharmacy, which Dr. Shah very quickly resolved. He was always available and offering reassurance. One day, late in the evening during a walk around the hospital floor, my husband and I saw Dr. Shah waiting for the elevator (hopefully on his way home) and I had a few concerns which I addressed with him. He easily could have pushed them off by following up the next day or leaving and later calling in. However, he walked back to the nursing station with us and he went to work dealing with the "situation." What a fine, fine physician UCI is fortunate to have on board! A professional, personable individual that you can tell truly cares about his patients. There is nothing mechanical or short-spoken about him. With a tremendous bedside manner, this physician will go far and I've no doubt if he were to eventually start his own practice - patients would be willing to travel far and wide to consult with him. UCI Medical Center, when Dr. Shah is done with his residency here, you'd be very wise to offer him a fellowship! He is one of the finest physicians I've met! My sincere thanks to you Dr. Shah.
