I am so glad Casa Lolea was right around the corner from my hotel. We walked in around 6 PM with no reservations and was able to snag a table for a couple of hours before the next rezzie (Tip: Make a reservation)! We sat in the back room of the restaurant, shelves filled of their famous sangria/wines. I mean this when I say you cannot go wrong ordering ANYTHING off the menu. Though their specials change daily, a few tapas I recommend are: -Potatas Bravas (Spicy cheesy potatoes) -Jamon Iberico -Tomato Bread (the bread n butter of Spain) -Risotto with Black Truffle (rich & savory) -Octopus Ceviche -Roast Beef We also ordered a bottle of their No. 1 Red Sangria Frizzante & No. 3 Brut. Best sangria I've ever tasted that I took home 4 bottles of it! Had to wear all of my clothes at the airport so United wouldn't charge me for overweight luggage LOL. The two times we went to Casa Lolea we had gone without reservations - we only went during lunch time so we were able to get a table. The place is kinda small, so if you're planning to go here for dinner - make reservations!! Hehe they have 5 different sangrias..we tried 4 out of the 5. If you plan on having Sangria (which you must!!)..stick with numbers 1 & 2! All of their tapas/small plate choices were good! But I must say, the winner for us was the black truffle risotto - amazeballs! The rice was cooked to perfection and the sauce was pure heaven. If you can't make up your mind, try their Appetizer table. Or just ask your server for recommendations. They were pretty spot on it helping us make our choices. If throughout your España stay you have yet to try a "gilda" be sure to order one here. It's a simple pintxos with olives, guindilla peppers (think pepperoncinis but more delicious!) and anchovies on a stick. For some veggies, try the Kenya bean salad. Fancy some bread with your seafood tapas? Try the Coca bread w/ tomato. Ha, and trust me when I say there is a very particular way you are supposed to apply the garlic & tomato onto your bread! So so so so good! There's a reason that Casa Lolea has lots of 5 star reviews and is always packed - it seriously rocks! My boyfriend and I stopped in on a Wednesday for lunch and were happy to only have to wait around 10 minutes for a table (this was around 2:45). We sat down and were quickly given a run down of the menu (in English - thank you so much for understanding that some of us struggle with Spanish). We decided to try out some of their house Sangrias that everyone seemed to be drinking - the cava one was light but fruity and delicious, while the rose one was a little overly sweet in my book. We were then very hungry from running around all morning so we decided to order lots of food. Everything on the menu sounded amazing so it took awhile for us to settle on the truffle risotto, patatas bravas, and Spanish tortilla. The waitress warned us that we were ordering a lot of food but we decided to go for it anyway. Well damn - that was quite a lot of food!!!!! The tortilla was a full tortilla served with a side of pan con tomate (we were definitely just expecting a slice of tortilla, whoops) but it was delicious! The patatas bravas were not the typical fried potato slices, but instead full baby potatoes cooked and coated in sauces. They were really interesting and good! The truffle risotto was amaaazing! The risotto was creamy, light, and tasted a little like mac and cheese. It paired perfectly with the heartiness of the truffle, a great combination! All in all we really enjoyed our meal! Two words: truffle risotto. We came here for some snacks and sangria and ended up having a delicious meal. The octopus ceviche, tomato bread, patatas bravas, beef tartare, and risotto were all incredible. First time I saw a Lolea drink I loved it so much that my beau got me the red bottle with the white dots because looks like a flamenco dancer dress and is just such a festive bottle that also serves as beautiful vase for a rose! We saw the sangria Lolea at...Whole Foods! and I posted the pics of that pretty bottle on Facebook. 2 seconds later, a friend from Barcelona told me that this sangria is not just an 'exotic export to the US' but there is a story behind and it was born in the Gothic quarter of Barcelona, at this small restaurant called Casa Lolea, where the initial batches of their sangria were made. I put it in my 'must visit' list when I went back to Barcelona to visit my family in September. The place was as expected, quaint, cozy, perky, sexy! Love the design even more than the food (check that bathroom!). I like everything in there, even the cool Argentinian servers with their nice accent and great service. Tapas wise, some were a little bit too exotic for me (something with avocado in a tapa is like a n-no for others, but somehow it worked). Do not expect the traditional tapas because you might get disappointed, but if you are into experimenting, you should go! Oh, and do not forget that polka dot top or dress. Our first day in Barcelona, we stopped by Casa Lolea for a quick breakfast straight after our long international flight. In short, it was delightful. The food, service, and ambience were a great way to begin our trip! I had heard this place is pretty popular so was glad we came earlier in the day, ~10:30am, for breakfast so our party of two got seated immediately. It's a cozy space with a charming interior of white tiles, wooden tables, chalkboard signs, and bottles of their famous red and white sangrias (which, by the way, I found out upon returning to the States is also sold at my local Fresh Market, score). I'd definitely say it's better for smaller groups since the seating area is rather small. My dining companion and I ordered the following to share: + Cortado coffees to drink (1,20€ each); + El Bocadillo (5€; avocado, lettuce, tomato, olives, fresh cheese, with yogurt sauce sandwich); + Huevos Royale con Salmon (6€; "eggs royale" with salmon, baby lettuce, and hollandaise sauce); + Revueltos Rojos con Chorizo (4,5€; scrambled red eggs with white wine chorizo and paprika) For such a straightforward breakfast at reasonable prices, everything was realllly good. I mean, seriously good. We loved everything but especially enjoyed the El Bocadillo. Service was friendly, patient, and quick; the menu also had both a Spanish and an English side (my Spanish isn't quite up to par so was thankful for this--maybe by next time). If you've been to Barcelona and missed out on Casa Lolea, consider your trip incomplete. WOW. A few days before we left, we had coffee with friends who had been to Barcelona and stumbled across CL and loved it so much they brought home their pre-bottled Sangria. They raved about it being one of their fave nights and highly recommended it. Oddly enough, most of the tour books, and other review sites out there, barely mentioned it because it's not in the super Touristy Gothic Quarter. This was exactly midway for us between our hotel and the border of the GC in our neighbourhood of El Born. The vibe is cool here, sorta like a rustic hipster spot with 50s style waitresses (aprons, matching casual/cool outfits). In speaking with our server she informed us that they are a Sangria factory, and they are. They produce 3-4 varieties of sangria, and to dine in you pay about 12-15 euros, but if you decide to take it and go the price drops to about 7-8 euros. We had the red and it was by far my favourite drink of our entire trio and hands down the best sangria I've ever had before! For food, being a tapas bar, and our first night, we went all ordering a portion of Jamon Iberico, Spanish Tortilla (omelette not a wrap), a goat cheese and beetroot salad and something called Catalonian bread. Everything was outstanding but the best item, and one that I soon learned was everywhere in BCN was the Catalonian bread. It's a crusty coco bread, toasted and served with whole garlic cloves, a ripe tomato and olive oil. What you are to do is cut the garlic cloves in half and rub it all over the toasted bread so that by the time it's melted you've essentially "buttered" your bread in garlic. Then you smush the ripe tomato on the bread before topping the whole thing with fresh olive oil. Such a simple dish but it was my favourite thing of the trip (even more so than Jamon)! What a cool spot. Thanks to a recent transplant from the US we learned about this place. It's in a tiny neighborhood near the palace of music. They are an offshoot of the sangria brand so you can try no.1 or no.2 or brut or no.19. We loved them all and I admit it tried them all! The sardines were excellent. The risotto with black truffles was so rich. And the herrings and olives were really great. We also loved the goat cheese with salad and walnuts. And the Spanish ham was great. There quite a few tourists here but the place has authentic local color. Make sure to get here early or get a reservation as its tiny and well known to tourists and locals alike. Our second time here was in the fall. It was even better. We loved the ceviche Polpi. And the salad with figs, raspberry and duck ham with almond cream. Wow what a treat. It's bold and slightly effervescent with hints of fresh cherries and strawberries. A bit of citrus juices and spices round out the flavor. The packaging is adorable. I wanted to take the bottle home as a souvenir but sadly had to ditch it at the airport die to weight restrictions. (Someone bought too many bottles of meloncello from Sorrento). Although at the airport, there's a shop that sells their amazing sangria so I purchased a small bottle as a final taste of Barcelona! My roommates and I stumbled upon Casa Lolea while heading to a coffee shop in the same area. We passed by and saw people eating toast with honey and nuts on it, and had to go in. The inside is super cute- there's red and white polka dot bottles, and different types of Iberian ham hanging from the wall. They had both Spanish/Catalan and English menus, which was really helpful. The toast itself was perfectly crunchy, with really light and fluffy ricotta cheese topped with honey, nuts, and blueberries. Later that day, we were looking for a place in Barcelona with the "best sangria," and found out that Casa Lolea was indeed the place to go. It was a shame that we were unable to eat tapas here too, as different tables' tapas looked extremely good. Make sure you make a reservation if you go at night- we were only able to be seated for an hour as most of the tables were booked. Between the four of us, we tried 3 different Sangrias. All of them were of varying dryness and fruitiness, but the waiter was super knowledgable about which one we would prefer. The Sangrias were HUGE, and really good. This is a fantastic restaurant. I highly recommend dining here while in Barcelona. You will need reservations especially on the weekend and summer. The staff is extremely friendly and welcoming. Let's start wtih the Sangria, they have their own brand of sangria with various flavors. I recommend sticking with the classic. They are sweet but that is Sangria. The other variety, especially the white Sangria is very sweet and not my favorite. On to the food: you myst get the torta - best i had in Spain. It is to die for. The pasta and the specials were also very good. Their version of the potato bravas is also excellent. We were a little disappointed in the tuna so don't recommend that. One of my favorites in Barcelona! We stumbled upon this place when we were walking back to our hotel and realized it is very close by and decided to stop for quick bite. It was early evening and not too busy. The place has cutesy decor with polka dots and a lovely waitress. There was a separate English menu and we were given brief orientation on what they are known for. I ordered the popular red wine sangria and it was awesome! It came in a huge glass and was very tasty with lot of fruity infused flavor. The patatas bravas was the first patatas bravas we had in Barcelona and no other places beat this one. The small whole potatoes covered in yummy sauces was heavenly. Hubby ordered Spanish tortilla and it came with pan con tomato. The Spanish omelette was alright. Hubby dint totally love it. My black truffles risotto was awesome. It had lot of truffles and gave the dish a very strong smell and taste. The risotto was creamy and well flavored. Dessert was mel i mato- cheese mouse with fresh berries and honey. I loved it. The cheese was like ricotta cheese and the sweetness was from honey and it complimented the sweet and tart berries. Our first night in Barcelona we checked out this place. It has a very home-y feel to it and the staff were all very accommodating! We got the risotto, the potato bravas, and the tomato/garlic bread paired with the house white wine.
