The atmosphere outside was great- very pretty setting and good live music. The food and service were awful. The salsa was basically diced canned tomatoes with spices added to it and the chips were a random bowl of half corn tortillas and half puffed flour chips. The meat on my tacos was so bland (I had one carnitas, one chicken and one steak) and the steak was half hard fat and too chewy to eat. The waitress forgot half our tables drink order and wanted to charge us for more chips when we only ate two bowls btwn 12 people. They didn't bring chips with the guacamole which is priced MP (market price) and for a small bowl was $14! And it could not have been more oily and bland. The waitress barely came by to check on us and charged us 18% gratuity bc we were more than 6 people. Half our table was kids and they were playing in the grass the whole time so we only got a 6 person table. It's really shocking how bad the mexican food was for being in San Diego. There's so many better options. Maybe the drinks are great- we didn't have anything alcoholic. Wouldn't recommend at all for the food and service, but the ambiance outside was nice so it's a real bummer. read more

Casa Estrella is a unique spot south of Fallbrook in a historic wooden building that longer-term residents remember as the Cask and Cleaver steakhouse. Theirs is the larger location of an older one that is in-town, with nearly identical menus. At both spots, the Mexican food is great, offering many options at reasonable prices along with incredible margarita options. While this spot is a favorite, my pain point here that prevents me from giving 5 stars is they are only willing to take a few credit cards, even for very large parties. As a past server, I know that separate payments can be a nuisance, but I think that a restaurant geared towards larger parties should have a better way to handle this. We've only been here one time but have decided that it's different enough to make us put it on our "go back"list. The food was very good, hot and the choices were numerous. There was entertainment in the bar area that gave it a fun and active feel. Larger groups and couples were throughout the dining, bar and outdoor eating areas. Hidden gem alert. I found this lively restaurant on my way to a new barber. He said it was good. We went that night and it was fun! Live music, dancing, great setup with lots of indoor and outdoor space. (I definitely want to go for a hot summer night here). Service was a little slow, but the place was packed and this seems to be the norm post-lockdown. Everyone was friendly and helpful though. Food was good. I got the fajitas and have a lot of leftovers. Our table also got a burrito (very good), fish tacos (nicely portioned and tasty), and street tacos (devoured quickly). The house margarita was a medium and it was huge. There were two larger sizes: OMG and a pitcher. It was good, just what I expected it to be. I saw several people walking out with margarita leftovers. I didn't know you could do that. But it's a good idea. Worth a trip. Only open Th-Sun, so expect a 20-30 min wait. Ultimately surprised. We haven't eaten here since just after Estrellas took over. Back then, we just didn't find anything worth returning for as it was now further from our home and just the ordinary Mexican fare most American/Mexican establishments were serving. We had always appreciated them when they were in Bonsal because of the house-made combination chips (corn and flour) and salsa. They still have them. One thing I noticed are the booths and tables. I think these tuck-n-rolled vinyl benches must've been here when it was a steakhouse. Today we weren't necessarily expecting such a wonderful experience. We were greeted with warm hospitality and service and a wide range of some terrific tasting dishes. The only thing keeping this place from receiving the fifth star was the presentation of the food on the plates. The plates just seemed to be lacking the visual wow factor. Flavors, seasoning and textures were there but the dishes fell tremendously flat on visual stimulation. The bar did have a quality tap operation that even included Pliney the Elder, a beer with limited distribution. "I'll have one of those". Casa Estrellas gets very busy during its regular business hours Friday- Sunday. We got lucky this evening as we walked in and were immediately seated. The restaurant's property is large with areas outside that have been nicely manicured and romantically illuminated. A friend recommended Casa Estrella..and I am beyond grateful! Everything was amazing from the food to the ambience. Chips and salsa were perfect! Our friend told us about the tortilla chips..the FLOUR tortilla chips no less..and they were amazing! I've said it before..almost drinkable salsa. We got Tacos Imelda with beautiful grilled onions and a side salad with delicious ranch and black beans. Chicken and steak sliced to perfection and the sauce in the tacos were so good! Street tacos..can get 3 or 5 (of course ordered the 5) choice of chick, steak, or carnitas..simple and delicious! Our boy ordered shredded beef 'rolled tacos' or taquitos from the kids menu..I almost wish I had ordered some. They have the beef or chicken option and his side was fries. I cannot wait to go back and try the mango chamoy margarita, bacon wrapped jalapeños, guacamole..and so much more. I'm only giving 1 star cuz the music was fire!!! First I got there and no one asked if we wanted chips or a drink for at least 20 min had to flag our waitress down. Next our waitress finally took our order and we waited like a good 15 min for drinks but my beer and Diet Coke didn't...didn't see our waitress anywhere got up to walk to the bar and another server checked it was not on our bill...next food came out and I had asked for fajitas with chicken, beef and shrimp she placed it only for chicken and beef. I had to waive her down again to find out what happened to our appetizer which came after our food which was jalapeño poppers. Next we order a gorilla which had vanilla ice cream the nerve it was brought out almost completely melted!! When I order the ice cream I also asked for the check I was already irritated with the time....she forgot the check...another 15 min later I was over it if I wasn't honest o would have just walked out!! When it comes to authentic Mexican food, this is the place. Traditional dishes done to perfection. The chorizo and egg breakfast is an example. How it's supposed to taste. Top notch margaritas. They sat multiple tables before us and said it was because they were short servers. We waited in heat over an hour when we were told 35 min or less. Then we were told the table had been ready for a while but couldn't seat us until servers had less tables but kept seating 4, 7, 8 2, tops...without any wait to them! And really a child's sticker on a hostess face? So unprofessional! No apologies just rude excuses. When we decided to leave all of a sudden they could seat us and give water but no food?? Really?? Two years as new Fallbrook residents and we're always super impressed with Casa Estrella! Not many places in FB/Bonsall have outdoor dining and none so far with the space and ambiance that Casa has. Went there last night with family and friends. We go eat there frequently but after last night we will not be returning. So as we were eating we saw two rats running back and forth right above us. We told the waitress quietly but she did not care. So i went and to told the owner Carlos. What he said its hard to control them because of the field in the back. He also did not care that rats are running around above peoples food. Then he goes behind bar and continues to take shots. That is not ok and yes you can take care of the rat problem they just choose not to.. Im sure health dept will love that. read more

This is a cute place. The food was delicious. I ordered the shrimp fajitas. The shrimp was a great size. I do wish the tails were taken off. The fajitas were flavorful. The chips and dip were so good, too. I believe they have flour and corn chips. As usual, I filled up on them, so I had to take food home. The drink was very strong. read more

A very unique lot for a Mexican Restaurant. It's definitely an old Western Town backlot feel. A HUGE space! Outdoor seating, outdoor party area and a back patio bar all available. We sat inside. Upon recommendation we ordered Margaritas and true to form, they are strong. Don't pass up their Margaritas. We ordered the carnitas plate and their famous house recipe guacamole at Market Price, which came to $10. The guacamole is called a dip but it is not whipped and creamy to everyone's delight. Nice chunks of avocado were present. I'd prefer tomato, onion and cilantro in my guacamole, but then I'd be ordering my own Special recipe. It's still better than most. The carnitas while moist lacked something. I couldn't put my finger on it. Crispy edges, salt? Something was absent. I make my own and my wife said mine are better as well as our favorite Mexican Restaurant in Carlsbad, Casa de Bandini. But for $18, it is priced right The flour tortillas are small. You only get three and they are too small to share. Sonoran tortillas would be a great upgrade. Their table salsa is tasty but I requested their "hot" salsa. It's full of onions, tomatoes and cilantro. We added that to their guacamole and it improved it to our liking. Go that route. We'd definitely return. It's good enough and close enough to our new home that this could be our hometown haunt. We can't wait to sit in the bar area and outside during our follow up visits. The Servers are young but attentive. Again this is my perspective as we are in or close to our 50's, a very friendly staff. Wish we took more pictures but we were enjoying the Margaritas too much. Busy, busy, busy, wait, wait, wait! The food is worth it if you're able to muster the patience needed to hold out until your buzzer goes off because your table is finally ready. Their Mexican food is solid. (The chille relleno here is my favorite chille relleno of any Mexican restaurant. I also stan their surprise combo chips!) The live music in the dining room adjacent to the bar on select nights is also great. Mariachis to locals on reggae. We liked the fajitas, could use some salsa on the side but other than that they have great service, the wait isn't too long. The place is pretty good out their art around. The vibe of this place was very cute. It did feel like we were in a big house, which fits with the name. We waited about 40 minutes for a table and went to check out the bar while we waited. There was live music, but trying to get a drink took a while. On top of that, the drinks were so strong they weren't enjoyable. Two margaritas and you were drunk! Some might enjoy that, but when you're trying to have a drink with dinner, it was slightly over the top. Once we were sat, our service was below average. It felt like they stuck us in a back corner and forgot about us. The chips and salsa were good, but the chips were a mix of flour and corn. Someone in the group has Celiac Disease so having them mixed is dangerous! We were able to get a basket of just corn. We also asked for a side of habanero salsa for the chips and they brought out buffalo sauce- no joke. They then tried to charge us $4 for it. Be careful of your bill!
