This place is in DESPERATE need of a deep cleaning and updating. Food was subpar. I will never come back.

Absolutely Unacceptable. I dont understand how there were so many people were eating there so comfortably. The first thing I noticed was the old greasy smell and the skeezy carpet. the server was freindly enough but didnt seem to believe me when i told her the salsa was bad. she brought me another serving and told me it was made that morning, but it had the exact same fermented taste as the first serving. she tried to bring me another serving which i declined. from the food that i saw from the buffet it was just as much of a disaster. cold food that should have been hot and hot food that should have been cold. it was truly pathetic. Only eat there if you you want to roll the dice with your body. This is easily the worst restaurant in the Metro East. read more

But this nonsense from previous negative posts is so ridiculous I had to jump on here. I've been going here since before I was mentally conscious way back when they had a place behind Ice Cream Haven, so I'm admittedly biased. That said, Casa has a place in so many people's hearts for a reason. You have to get the buffet; anything else is amateur hour. The food is in fact not mediocre but rather a heavenly gift that tastes like its been prepared by Quetzalcoatl himself. I would eat this food anytime, anyplace. I've written home much I miss Casa more than I can count. If someone told me they didn't like the salsa I'd look at them like they were a mongoloid as well; I'd buy pickle jars of the stuff if I could. And regarding the negative reviewer who said she would rather sit in her office and eat a Lean Cuisine...honestly someone who eats that type of garbage doesn't deserve to have a seat in what is by far one of the best joints in the Metro-East. How much credit can you give someone who bashes their boss for being cheap on Yelp anyways? Some people just don't know how much appreciation should be shown for a free meal at this place. And finally, this is a Mexican restaurant who's shining glory is its buffet. No, there isn't labels because I'd like to think they respect their customers' intelligence by not needing to spell out the obvious Mexican fare. Mentioning a place such as this will give you an upset stomach is like pointing out a bar unfortunately was the reason for your hangover. I really, really, really am not a fan of this place. But my boss for some reason likes it here and will pays for my food, so I really can't complain. The service is usually pretty quick and it's inexpensive (probably why he likes it.... he's a little cheap). But you get what you pay for and the quality of Mexican food isn't good. I'd almost rather sit and my office and eat a Lean Cuisine. However, us admin girls would come here after work for drinks and their drinks are usually pretty good and strong. Among my favorite Mexican I've tried since leaving Texas. I went at lunch time and they have a buffet. They make you tacos and serve up enchiladas that were great. Surprisingly my favorite thing they had was fried chicken. I wouldn't have thought a Mexican place would have great fried chicken but I am glad my boyfriend made me have some. I really wanted to like Casa Azteca, but that did not happen. It is the first time I have eaten here since high school. My husband and I ate here because of recommendations by friends and a coupon deal. When we first arrived, our table was cleared but hadn't been wiped down. You could see rings of water from where glasses had been, so I wiped it down myself so my baby wouldn't be touching a dirty table. I also found some pieces of food when I wiped the table. The chips were greasy. We were not given silverware or napkins so I had to get them from another table. We ordered from the menu rather than the buffet because of the coupon we had. I order a chicken dish that had a chicken breast covered with cheese sauce, chorizo and onions. The overall flavors of the dish were good, BUT the chicken breast was one of the worst I have ever had. It was very hard to chew. I had a very difficult time cutting it and an even worse time chewing it. There were parts I couldn't even chew. They had obviously bought the cheapest chicken they could find. The waitress did not ask me how my food was and I assume, didn't notice or didn't care, about the half-chewed pieces of chicken that I had placed on an extra plate we had in the middle of our table. I didn't feel like even bringing up my disappointment over my meal, because what would they do, make me another? They can't fix a cheap chicken breast. The beans were good, but the rice wasn't and again, tasted cheap. My husband thought his shrimp dish was ok, but didn't like the rice at all. It just tasted unusual and wasn't even whole. Maybe they *meant* to serve broke rice? One thing he definitely had to say was that his gut feeling is that he didn't think he should trust the buffet and that he probably shouldn't have ordered shrimp because he was concerned about the cleanliness of the kitchen based on the cleanliness and presentation the dining room. I guess I was in a really bad mood after the table, silverware, chips and my chicken, that it was really bothering me that the whole time we were there, the man who appeared to be the owner, stood against the back walk talking to one table. He did not check on any of the tables nor do anything except later help our waitress fold silverware. This isn't a high end restaurant so I guess I shouldn't expect great service, but wouldn't it be nice if you got it anyway? read more

I have only eaten at Casa Azteca for lunch and had the buffet every time that I have been there. The food is authentic and has great flavor and I think the taco's and enchiladas are really good. The thing that I find as most bizarre is that this place has some of the best fried chicken that I have had. It's never greasy and always has been hot and fresh. I know it seems odd to me that a Mexican place has the best fried chicken but it is what it is. The food has great authentic flavor and you can choose between mild or spicy taco's but I always get the spicy ones. The service has always been great and the staff has been there forever so I really think that helps. The only reason not a 5 star is because I have never had anything but the buffet. read more

Staff is always friendly and accommodating. We almost always have the buffet. They have the best beef enchiladas and fried chicken on the buffet . I tried something different and ordered off the menu last night. I got the street tacos and was blown away. I told my husband, " if anything happens to me and I die in the near future, these are the best tacos I've had in my whole life ." We had been in the heat all day and the cool component of the tacos is amazing for summer.. the cold fresh cilantro, and shredded lettuce and chopped onions in each bite of hot chicken and slightly melted cheese was perfect. Go to the buffet, load up with tacos, enchiladas, rice, beans, and some fried chicken. This place is down the street from my parents home. Every time I come visit i make them go here with me. It is delicious authentic central mexican style cuisine. If you are looking for Baja style or Chipotle style, you will be disappointed. But, if you like shredded chicken, homemade red chile, fresh fried chips, and enchiladas then you will be as happy and satisfied as me. read more

Very displeased, Coming from California only two months ago, we were jones ing for some "authentic" Mexican cuisine which we've come to love in CA. The only thing authentic was the language. We spoke with two hosts who didn't understand basic English questions. The first question I asked was what beer they offered, since they weren't listed on the elementary menu. They gave me a blank stare and repeated, "beer?" After asking about domestics, three times, finally a server said bud. We were then promptly served chips and salsa, as any good Mexican place should start. The chips were like any run of the mill restaurant chip, over greased and under seasoned. Then came the daunting task of ordering out food. Their menu is numbered and if your order strays in any small way from the numbered menu, you will receive an incorrect order. For example, I asked for a shrimp burrito. Very simple, a little surf and turf. She seemed to understand so I asked if she could kick it up a notch by adding some spice. All I said was "spicy?" Again I got a blank stare. So I asked, "spicy? Chipotle? Jalapeño?" Ok jalapeño! I ask, she said. I will admit the service was quick, but my "spicy shrimp burrito" arrived as a "spicy beef burrito." Way to go! As I wait for the server to return, I have enough time to write this review in its entirety. Bottom line, don't waste your time. read more

Wife and I went here for the first time a couple weeks ago and were pleased with the food. Unfortunately they DO NOT serve horchata... Maybe they ran out when we went which I hope was the case. If not the case then it's a real disappointment. What kind of a Mexican restaurant doesn't serve horchata?! And my parents are Mexican... We'll go back and give it another try. Decent choice for Mexican food in O'Fallon. The buffet is the way to go. Small selection but plenty to eat. In addition to tacos, enchiladas, chimi's, beans, rice, & chili...you can try some pretty decent fried chicken, hot wings, & hot link sausage. Interesting for a Mexican buffet. The buffet lack condiments to dress the entrees. My favorite is the huge sopapilla chips & honey! Your buffet experience won't be life changing, but it is a solid lunch option. I have been here more times than I can count. After all this time, because it's like they are attempting to change things a little bit...like seat yourself, adding to the menu, and different, but nice and fresh chips, it finally dawned on me to check in and do a review. One thing I really like about this place is predictability of their small number of items on the buffet that can be counted on to be good every time. Fried chicken is really lightly battered, crispy on the outside, but moist and tender on the inside. Tacos are the best around and made the way you want it every time. Try the chili on top of the burrito or the rice ... it's very nice. They tasted exactly the same today as it did 13 years ago when we first tried it. Don't know how they do it, but it tastes the same every time. Only thing they could make a little better might be the salsa. It is more tomatoey than savory. The refills for buffet customers are the same salsa used on tacos and they're warm. read more

The other Mexican food here is the very bastardized versions you see frequently in the midwest Swimming in a puddle of cheese, refried beans that still kinda taste like the can they came out of, etc. BUT......this place has the best fried chicken around. To my surprise, this place is excellent. Disappointed to see lot of negative reviews because folks are judging based on comparison to where they are from. You have understand that this place is in a working class section of O'Fallon, Illinois; you're not going to get the authentic experience. This is plain and simple a good TEX/MEX buffet...period. They have your standard fare of the Mexican stable classics, burritos, enchiladas, etc. I find that the taste here is very flavorful, and sharp. The buffet lay out is a bit annoying as they serve the food to you from behind the buffet stand. Not too thrilled with someone touching my taco shell with their hands (I'm a germ freak) as they scoop the meat on there, but oh well. The flavor is heavy on cumin, but I think it tastes good. The buffet is really cheap. The atmosphere is cozy. Not sure if they need a salad bar in there, it doesn't fit well. They should just have additional Mexican dishes instead. But do stop on by, cause you will be surprised. read more

Not on par with The La Hacienda in Washington Park or all time best Mexican Hall in Fairmont City both in the 60's. This is a small family restaurant in my neighborhood, so I really wanted to give it a great rating. Unfortunately. I completely dislike eating here. My husband and son love their all-you-can-eat buffet, but I don't know why. I find all their food bland; The beans, rice, salsa, everything is so boring we tasteless. I am a vegetarian so I do not eat the beef or chicken the rest of my family likes , that may make a difference. But I prefer food with flavor and there is none from the iceberg lettuce to the sopapillas... Everything. Instead of nine dollars a person for buffet, I would much prefer going to Qdoba or chipotle and getting a flavorful burrito for the same price. read more

I will probably not return to this place... Terrible experience from the moment we walked in the door. Not greeted by the hostile, surly "hostess" just a rude how many? And she held out a pager. We were afraid to ask how long the wait would be!! After being seated at a dark table with 2 burned out bulbs on the table light, I ordered with out being able to see the menu.. The food was mediocre at best. I really think if we had a better first impression it would have been a more pleasant evening. read more
