In 2002, a visit with DR Carter had a significant change to my life with his confidence he could use Lasik to improve my vision. His competition said it would take 2 passes. DR Carter succeeded in giving me better than 20/20 which lasted over 16 years! As I conceded my age was beginning to affect my vision, I went back in Feb 2022. Salzmann Nodule Degeneration was seriously affecting both eyes, he explained. In March 2022, he performed surgery on both eyes to remove the nodules which will be recurring. He also used the latest technology to hopefully slow down the growths. Prokera. Prokera uses the amniotic membrane tissue in its products, which is preserved using the company's proprietary CRYOTEK® processing method to ensure the tissue retains its full biologic activity, Amniotic tissue has natural properties that help damaged eye surfaces heal. Prokera products promote faster and more effective healing of the cornea with less inflammation and scarring, leading to improved clinical outcomes with better vision. Sounds great eh? The process requires manually removing the nodules and then applying the Prokera lenses one eye at a time the day following surgery. The surgery, itself, isn't painful. The staff keeps you at ease and DR Carter is pretty quick and thorough. Now after the surgery, and wearing the Prokera lens for a week is not something I would love to do again, but I will, and just have to deal with it. It helps. I'm typing this review a few days later without any glasses and can see quite well. So it works. I posted a photo of the device next to a nickel. By day 5, it isn't so bad. Let me add something important. I will only let 2 people actually touch my eyes. DR Carter and one of his assistants. I trust no one else, not even me! Yes, he has worked on thousands (if not ten thousands of eyes) (Maybe he needs a sign over the door saying how many he's served.) I get the nod of approval from others he has taken care of when I mention who did the work, a few are fellow Yelpers. Many at my workplace. Some others are quite famous and had million dollar careers riding on their eyes. Huge impact on MANY lives. I see some poor reviews on here, and I guess some had bad experiences. My eyes and ears let me know he does have an amazing staff right now. I saw and heard how well that staff responds to their patients. 16 visits in a bit over a year, and not once heard or saw any patients being mishandled. If you think you have an issue, see/talk to David who is one of the best customer service/patience advocate trained people I've EVER met. 21 years, and still more than happy to trust him with my eyes. read more

My wife and have been going there for years. While we never had any complaints about the ability of Dr Carter and his staff, we do have one complaint. Although it may seem petty to some, we could no longer tolerate the Dr's political opinions. I had pointed out to him before the we would prefer not to discuss politics. But that didn't seem to matter to him. We were going there for eye examinations. I knew we had different political opinions and out respect for Dr Carter I did not want engage in a political dicussion with him. (my review was in the wrong place...so moving it here) With all these reviews popping up has made me realize I should review Dr. Carter. I had LASIK performed by Dr. Carter about 5 years ago. On the initial visit I went in to see if I would be a good candidate for LASIK. After a bunch of tests by the office staff I was told that LASIK could indeed help me see with out needing glasses or contacts. I was told I have very dry eyes, and was asked if that had ever been an issue. I hadn't really noticed, but I did have problems with my contacts drying out all the time. I was told that if my dry eyes weren't a problem to me now, they wouldn't be a problem to me after LASIK, but if they were there was some other surgery they could do for my tear ducts. Any who. I showed up for surgery on a Friday morning. There were dozens of other people there for the exact same thing. They ran a few more tests on me, and then about 20 minutes before surgery I was given a valium. I was put in a room where we laid back and listened to relaxing music. I didn't actually meet Dr. Carter until they cattle called me into the operating room. I was told to lay down on the operating table and they immediately went to town on my eyes. I was trying to freak out, but Dr. Carter kept asking me questions about my job. I used to work at Presbyterian Hospital and he found that very interesting since he is on staff there. He and the tech (not sure what he was) in the room where cracking jokes to each other. It was kind of odd, but at the same time it kept my mind off the laser on my eye! The whole surgery took about ten minutes, if that. They cattle called me out of the surgery room and I did an eye test. I had perfect vision. That rocked! I was bandaged up and my mom took me home. They tell you to keep your eyes closed as much as possible for 24 hours so I popped some Tylenol PM when I got home and slept the day/night away. Although the whole experience wasn't really personable, everyone that I encountered were really professional and answered any questions that I had. I have been visiting Cater Eye Center for a while now. Dr. Carter and his staff are amazing, super friendly, & nice. I needed cataract surgery when I was 22 & Dr. Carter spent over an hour stepping me through the process for that and answering all my questions. The day of the surgery I was super nervous and scared, but everyone was nice & helped calm my nerves. Now, because of Dr. Carter and his staff, I am now able to see. Booked an appointment with them a couple of weeks ago. Specifically asked if they accepted my insurance, the gentleman check and confirmed that they did. Well one day before my appointment their insurance department calls and asks for my card number and proceeded to tell me they don't accept my insurance. So now i have to call around again and get on another waiting list. Thanks for wasting two weeks of my time. It is absolutely an incredible group of professionals. I just completed my surgeries for new premium lenses. I totally felt like I was in Blessed hands the entire time. The wait every time I come here is too long. I had lasiks, which went well untilI I realised it ruined my farsightedness making me unable to read texts and anything else within hands reach is blurry. I can't put on my makeup without a magnified mirror. Had they explained that my reading vision would be drastically altered I would not have had the surgery. Don't recommend getting Lasik procedure done here. I got mine done about a year ago but I did not have a good experience with the Lasik procedure itself. Everyone says LASIK is simple to do and feel totally fine while they do it. I know 2 people that came to this same location, my boyfriend and his sister. They had normal great experiences. Even though I was comfortable with my first visit on my diagnosis, the procedure itself was traumatic. I know how my eyes feel when they put numbing gel because they did this the first time But when my procedure came, they did not put any numbing gel and I did not feel like I did the first time I came in with the gel. They just gave me Valium only. I did not know when the correct time they were going to put numbing on my eyes so I didn't say anything until they took me into the procedure room, I stated I'm not numb, I can feel what they were doing to my eyes while trying to put this thick lenses in them right before surgery. I stated "I feel this, it hurts" and they sent me out saying "give her more drugs" but that wasn't the issue... I am now super groggy and before I could say anything, I dosed off, and woke up to them putting me in the room again without adding numbing to the eyes the whole time. I stated again "this hurts, and I can still feel all this" they seemed to look as if they did not believe me and was telling me to squeeze someone's hand. As I was squeezing their hand extremely hard, I was in excruciating pain but managed through because I was scared my eyes would be messed up while they were doing the surgery. I've never experienced anything like that in my life. They put very thick lenses in one eye first, then you feel a strong suction cup pressure, they push hard 3 times, and you stare at this red light and instructed not to move. Then they do the other eye same way. I felt all this pressure and pain during it but fought through because it was "quick". They took me out after I finished, and I cried, cried all the way home, and then could not see for 24 hrs. They said I wouldn't have any issues and to call emergency if I needed to. My boyfriend called emergency next day because I was in bad pain and could not see.. and they did not answer. When I saw them again I told them what I went through and they brushed it off as if they did not believe my experience. I wanted to do a 1 yr Post op now, but after seeing reviews again and thinking about my experience, I do not want to come back or recommend anyone to see them. I instructed my friends and family not to come here because I wouldn't want what I went through upon anyone else and my feelings bout my experience should be valid. At the time the front desk was a Hispanic rude lady, and the assistant that gave me the Valium only and no numbing gel was an African American lady. That's all I can remember. The gentlemen that presents treatment plans is very nice and so is the female optometrist. (She was the main reason I was ok coming back to see them and the reason why I debated writing a review a year ago on experience) but at this point I want to express that my feelings should've been validated. read more

I visited Carter Eye Center 1 month ago and the visit itself was fine, the office was extremely cold so bring a sweater. However my main reason for the low rating is that the Dr told me to try a pair of contacts and call back and order the set if I liked the fit etc. I called back a couple weeks later to order and they said they would let the doctor know and reach out before they ordered them. I never heard back and had to call back again a week later to try and get them ordered. I finally received an email- not a call back- regarding the order amount and price options but there were two issues: 1. They wanted me to send payment via email and I did not want to but my card information in an email 2. They were over charging for a 1 year supplies of contacts, I can get the same amount and same type of contacts for $300 less (on contacts.com) than what this office was trying to make me pay. I'm putting this out there for anyone else who may not realize this so please beware! read more

The counselors and doctors here are very cautious (and rightfully so!) on their guidance for expectations, but my hopes for the procedure have been exceeded in every way! I visited here for my annual eye exam. I visited with Dr. John after moving through the other technical tests (refractor, dilation, etc.). The wait was fairly standard compared to other eye doctor offices I have visited in the past, but no more than maybe 20 mins. with other patients being seen. I felt they were friendly, but quick and efficient from check-in through check-out, and the staff answered any questions I had or provided help where I needed. They even gave me some coupons and a rebate offer for the contact lenses I need to order! This office is clean and the staff is presentable. The location offers eyeglass frames, though I did not need any new frames today. I inquired about LASIK, and they staff offered more information regarding this procedure. All in all, it was a smooth appointment with only a little waiting and then time for the dilation drugs to take effect. I will likely visit here again next year or if I need emergency lenses. read more

Beware--they will NOT disclose this at ANY time before or during your appointment......you'll learn it when you get a bill! Went in for my annual Medicare eye exam. in 1 hour CEC administered all kinds of tests, the result of which was that my eyesight must deteriorate more before Medicare will cover cataract removal. surprised, but it is what it is. Subsequently i get a bill for $68. when i left the day of my exam, CEC people said they'd submit to my United provider....saying nothing about the results of the exam costing me anything OOP, as CEC in In-Network for my United plan. when i called CEC, CEC says United paid for appointment only--not for eye exam (why would i have wanted an appt. without the exam to test for cataracts)?. I expressed that this was deceptive to not disclose an OOP expense--or the possibility/probability of this. Impossible that i am the first Medicare person to come in for what they believe--and are not told anything otherwise. CEC countered that they don't know what amount the insurance coverage will apply toward deductible, even though they scanned my insurance card upon my arrival. United paid CEC $47 and applied that to my deductible. The tests taken that day are of ZERO value because they are no longer current. i did offer $25 to settle the surprise bill. CEC said No and that they would send it to Collections. Given that CEC had my card within the first minute of my appointment, they SHOULD have run it through then, or gotten my coverage in advance to check out what United would pay for a covered annual eye exam and notified me in advance of my OOP. I canNOT be their first Medicare annual eye exam patient ever! Given this, i sincerely believe CEC is skimming unknowing people coming in for their annual eye exam. i don't do business with unethical providers, and CEC has totally quashed any chance of my coming to CEC to have my cataracts removed. read more

I have been here twice now for my diabetic eye exam. Good service and love the employees. Had a bit of a wait to be seen this past visit on March 14. I would give them 5 stars BUT -- my diabetic eye exam is covered by my insurance. However, they made me pay in full. I am still waiting for my refund of what they over charged me/the difference of what insurance and agreed upon fees are. We are on two weeks waiting now, and I CANNOT GET THE BILLING PERSON TO RETURN MY CALL WITH A STATUS UPDATE. The only way I was able to speak with him was when I showed up there on MY lunch hour and then the receptionist simply called him and let me speak to him on the phone. I call every day, sometimes twice a day and still no response. Just a simple call back would go a long way. I need my money now! read more

I would rate my experience at Carter Eye Center a 5. If I could rate it higher I would. I reviewed previous comments prior to my consultation, and I have to admit, I almost canceled my appointment. Luckily, the reason I was going to Mr. Carter was because I had gotten a gift certificate for service at the Dallas Margarita Ball and I would have tried to sell it to get my money back. I experienced nothing less than helpful staff and friendly service during my initial confrontation. It definitely set me at ease as it was opposite from the reviews I had read below. Yes, you should anticipate being there for about 3 hours. This is typical of laser eye centers. I know because I have been to one prior to coming here. They have to run several different tests to ensure you are a candidate and get your correct prescription to fix your eyes. Believe me, you want them to take the time to get it right. I had considered Lasik a couple of years ago, but the previous doctor told me that my corneas were too thin and I wouldn't be a candidate. They said I had to get PRK, which freaked me out so I didn't do it. During my consultation with Dr. Carter he said I was indeed a candidate and that my corneas were much thicker than minimum requirements. Why, you ask? Because Dr. Carter uses newer equipment!!! I went in for my consultation on Friday and immediately schedule my appointment for the following Monday. I felt at ease doing it there. I had my surgery yesterday at 3 PM, and I have to say that it was AMAZING! I was so scared before (enough to make me put it off for so long), but once the procedure started, it was painless and fast. Honestly, I was mesmerized and though the whole thing was pretty cool. I went home and went to sleep for a couple of hours, ate and talked for a bit, then went back to sleep for the rest of the night. No pain, no discomfort. I woke up the next morning (today) and took the protective shields off. No pain or scarring and I could see EVERYTHING! I have no regrets. And on a personal note, I want to mention that I had a medical emergency (COMPLETELY UNRELATED TO THE PROCEDURE ITSELF - WOMEN'S ISSUE) while in the procedure room getting prepped for surgery. I had to ask to stop the process and get up and take care of myself. The assistant and doctor and all employees were so kind and helpful in what was an embarrassing situation for me. They allowed me to pull myself together and continued when I was ready, even though it caused them to stay past closing. They could have easily said come back tomorrow, but they took care of me and made sure I was comfortable. I'm not sure where these people in the posts below have gone, but my experience is with a 5-star company. I will and have recommend then to anyone who will listen. I am very torn on this review, as my eyes are great and my follow ups have been amazingly easy. However, my procedure day was the worst. I chose to do my qualifying exam and the procedure in the same day, which I had friends do previously and love. I got through the exams fine and was pumped but nervous to do the procedure. Apparently, I was the first procedure of the day and when it came time for me to leave the relaxation room (where they numb your eyes and give you valium), the doctor could not be found. They put me in the operation room and I laid there FREEZING for over 30 minutes. The male nurse in the room did NOT speak to me to calm my nerves, even after I asked. By then the valium and eye numbing had worn off and I was panicking. When Dr Carter finally came in, he was yelling at a nurse about how he was going to "f*cking fire the staff if they dont start cleaning up after themselves". Of course, I panicked more. He tried to make a joke and ask if I dealt with managing stupid humans and how terrible it was. The procedure went quick after we started but he did have to re-numb my eyes (since I waited forever). There was no apology for the delay. Dr Carter seems talented at what he does but customer service and experience are not his fortes. My follow up appointments have not involved them and they go swimmingly. I'm sure there is a coincidence there. read more

I booked an appointment for 10:00 AM, got there early, and waited an hour and a half before canceling my appointment. I could not take it anymore. Other patients were waiting for 2+ hours. Not only that, but after they take you into the exam room they make you wait ANOTHER 30-45 minutes before finishing up your appoint. This is absolutely ridiculous and unacceptable. I don't care how many football players you've done LASIK on, you can't make people wait for 2 hours to see the doctor. My advice is, if you value time, do NOT book an appointment with Carter Eye Center. There are MANY more competent and more professional Opthomalogists in Dallas. Also, the reviews about the front desk lady are absolutely true. She belongs in a cubicle, where she does not have to deal with people. When I came in, no "good morning", no "hi, welcome to blah blah blah". Then, when I was clearly upset because I had wasted my time, she didn't even attempt to apologize or explain why they were not able to see me. This is an epic fail of customer service. I recently got LASIK done on 2/4/19 and can't be happier! Dr. Carter seems to be very knowledgeable and experienced. Ashley was extremely professional yet also very warm and kind. She made me feel extremely at ease during my initial consultation and on the day of my procedure. I feel it says a lot about the doctors when they staff enjoy their job. Dr. John was also great during my consultation and follow up. I saw their AD initially through Facebook and Tammie help me set up my consultation. She was quick to respond and helped answer the many questions I had. I can't recommend this place enough! There were places that advertised to be cheaper but I wanted a reputable doctor. I had an appointment at the Carter Eye Center for a basic eye exam. Waited two hours. At a hour and a half I went up to the front desk and inquired about the status of my appointment and the young lady looked surprised... she went back and said your next. They put me in a room where I sat for another 30 minutes. I went back out front and said I've been here two hours. The young lady again looked surprised and said" no one has been back there". I said no and I have to leave. She said sorry. I turned around and walked out. I've not heard a word from anyone about an apology or to reschedule me. So I can only assume that their business is so good they don't need mine. I had Dr Carter do my lazer surgery 20 years ago and have referred several people to him over there years. LONG STORY SHORT: ABYSMAL SERVICE I went to Carter Eye Center twice; both times for an eye exam and contact/glasses prescription update. I chose them exclusively because they were nearby and one of the few offices covered by my vision insurance. During my first visit, I waited for an exorbitant amount of time. I waited dutifully. After my exam, I felt the new contacts I was given were not as clear or comfortable as my old ones. The PA was very dismissive and did little to try to find a solution. This irritated me, but I thought (as it was one of the very limited options on my vision insurance) I would give them another try. During my second visit, I was forgotten. Literally. I mean I walked straight up to these people, said "good morning" and wrote my name on their little ledger with the time I got there. I'm a patient person who naively tries to give the benefit of the doubt when receiving poor service, but after over an hour and a half of sitting within the line of sight of these people I got up asked how much longer it would be. They were somehow shocked I was there, as if I had suddenly cast away my invisibility cloak and made some grand appearance. My name was still on the little ledger. Once my contacts came in (weeks after I was told they would) I picked them up. I had paid in full upon ordering, but knowing the level of service I should expect, I had the receptionist check my balance owed. I was told zero. Shortly after, my address changed, and as I had no intention of ever returning to Official Lasik Providers of the Dallas Cowboys I did not update my address with them. They did have my phone number. I had my LASIK done in July 2013 and have nothing but great things to say!!!! Okay first off, I did a TON of research before I decided on a doctor to perform my LASIK. The surgery is a very critical one, and if performed wrong you can lose your entire vision! SO, yes I did a lot of searching for the perfect doctor! While searching I could Dr. Carter, and realized he was literally 1/2 mile from my home in the M Streets AND he had done LASIK for a few Dallas Cowboys, SOLD. My first visit was a LONG visit, so be prepared to be there for a few hours. They haven't forgotten about you, I promise. I had my eye exam, and met with a financing person. I didn't meet Dr. Carter until my initial visit, which was fine because I know he is a busy man. Talking to him before my surgery made me more sure that I made the right choice for my LASIK. He was very comforting and eased my nerves! During the surgery they numb your eyes and give you a sedative to help you relax. THANK GOD, because I was freaking out! The surgery only took about 20 minuets, maximum. And after it was over they covered my eyes with white patches, and I had to have someone drive me home. As soon as I got home from Carter Eye Center, I went to sleep, as directed by the doctor. I won't lie, that first night with the patches on my eyes I kind of got depressed. I thought I was going blind because I was so disoriented from the drugs and my eyes being covered. The next morning I was instructed to go back to the eye center to let them look at my eyes. I did an eye test and had 20/15 eye sight!!!!! I couldn't believe it, for the first time in my whole life I could see without contacts or glasses!!!! It was so amazing! After everything, I think I spent $4000, total for my eyes. If I wouldn't have gotten the permanent eye plugs to keep my eyes from drying out or the life time guarantee my total would have been around $3000! I got 2 years interest free financing, and the payments haven't been very expensive, in fact I am almost done paying for it! One year later, my vision is still perfect! They gave me a 4 month follow up on my eye surgery for April 2020 but because of corona virus they change to May 20th at 12 noon.on May 20th at 9a.m .I called their office to make sure of my visit and the lady told me am scheduled to come at 1:30 p.m. i was at their office at 1:15 p.m only to be told that I need a refferal but i have been their patent for the last 7 years. They treated me like nobody in lousy way.Dr. Harvey Carter needs to hire better professional people who are willing to treat their customers decently. read more

I just got my lasik surgery done with Dr. Carter and the whole team was awesome. The ladies in the front were super helpful in coordinating the appointments and also in making it a humorous day for me as I was terrified going in. Everyone was professional and I loved my surgery.
