I spoke with several friends who are physicians and multiple of them told me that Dr. Shulkin is the best in his field and who they would go to themselves. Before seeing him, I had done vision therapy and used glasses with prisms. Neither of these solutions fully corrected for the issue. Dr. Shulkin was highly reassuring and said I was a great candidate for surgical correction, which would involve moving a muscle in each eye by about 5 millimeters. He said both eyes would take a combined 15 minutes and that he estimated an 85% chance of perfect outcome on the first surgery, with a small possibility that a follow-up would be needed for minor correction. The procedure itself was very simple, though it requires general anesthesia due to the whole cutting into your eyeball thing. The facility was great, people were friendly, and pre-op and post-op instructions clear. Dr. Shulkin checked in with me several times to be sure things were going well afterwards and noted that the outcome looked fantastic. There was a little soreness which improved markedly within a couple days, and 2 weeks later other than a little redness, there are no visible signs. Most importantly, the results were great. Alignment is perfect, and function is 100% with muscles seemingly in full balance. I had waffled on doing this surgery for years, but am very glad I did. I highly recommend Dr. Shulkin.

Fifteen years after a very successful cataract surgery on my right eye with no problems, I was on a golf trip in Baja California with my buddies and my lens decided to dislodge out of the back of the pocket it was positioned in. Dr. Frazee made arrangements to see me right away when I returned to Plano, made an immediate diagnosis with an urgent exam, and referred me the same day to both retina specialist and corneal specialists as secondary lens implantation is a niche specialty itself. The refraction test is an extra $55 but I was made aware of that. All totaled, the bill was $785 for that day not including the tests that I paid for! The ins.adjustment was $505. So I paid $279.50 and now they want another $74.50.

I visited several eye doctors, hoping to be a candidate for LASIK. Unfortunately, every one of them ruled it out and recommended PRK again. Then I found Dr. Michael Mazaheri, and to my surprise, he was the only doctor who said NO--not just to LASIK, but to PRK as well. He explained in detail why surgery would be risky in my case, citing thin corneas and retina. I'll never forget what he said and I quote: "If I agree to perform surgery, then I'm only thinking about my pocket--but I care about your vision." Unlike the other doctors, who didn't even mention my elevated eye pressure, Dr. Mazaheri took a cautious, thorough, and ethical approach. He recommended a conservative treatment plan first, prescribing eye drops and a range of vitamins to strengthen my cornea and retina. His plan is to monitor my progress and reassess in a year--possibly starting with surgery on the right eye first, since the left is more compromised. Was I disappointed to learn that surgery isn't an option right now? Absolutely. But I am grateful beyond words for Dr. Mazaheri's honesty, expertise, and dedication to doing what's best for his patients--not what's profitable. I'd much rather take care of my eyes first than rush into a surgery that could turn into a nightmare. Thank you, Dr. Mazaheri, for treating your patients with integrity and compassion. I have multiple complex eye issues going on at the same time and he is very accommodating and understanding - which is great for someone like me who is terrified of having people and objects go near her eyeballs (think Kubrick's "A Clockwork Orange"). I never feel pressured to spend money I don't have, and though it can be complicated every year billing and I work together to parse through my primary and secondary medical insurances as well as my vision insurance to get everything covered as much as possible. I never have a problem getting squeezed in when I scratch my cornea either - though that happens far less frequently now than it used to as we have figured out why it kept happening and how to better prevent it. He has no ego like so many other doctors and sent me to a retina specialist and now they work together, and we coordinate with my migraine management schedule to try and take tests at the right time. If anything doesn't work for me I typically have what I would consider a long window of time to test and return for either a refund or replacement - imagine if other doctors did that for medications or treatments! Huge shout-out to Jen/Jenn/Jenny (please forgive me - I am terrible with names) is AH-MAZE-ING when it comes to frame adjustments so she has been able fit all my frame choices to not only crooked features but also to adjust the nose bridge flare and and other angles for the more "Alternative Fit" I need - which is harder to do when you only wear acetate frames. She's a magician, I swear it, and if you ever find that your frames never seem to look right or fit right, or after a while they need re-adjusting, call and ask when she'll be in to ask for her help. I have even learned the hard way that sometimes my Rx is right but after adjustments (and sometimes due to the shape/curvature of the frames initially) need to be tweaked with added measurements.
