Poor service. Missed a crucial repair on my car and then tried to say there was nothing wrong. A few month later and the noise is back.

After two failed attempts to get my accident damaged car repaired at Carstar I took it to another shop. The 2nd shop showed me several things Carstar should have repaired, including not fixing the bent frame of my car. Carstar had charged my insurance company to repair several things they didn't do. After Carstar twice failed to repair my car and lied about their work, my insurance company declared my car a total loss. Stay away from this business. read more

My car was in an accident and essentially totaled but the replacement was an exact same copy so I called these folks up and ask them if they could paint just a hard top of my car so it matched the new car it was going to sit on and the lady on the phone said I checked with my supervisor and we don't do that so I said so I have to get my whole car painted in order to get the top of my car paint and she said well yes if you wanted to get the whole car payment it would cost $10,000 So I said you're telling me that paint job for a cat tiny car is $10,000 and she said yes and that's when I said you're completely out of your mind and you're sadly misinformed read more

very disappointed with my experience here i only went with them because of my insurance and the close proximity to my house a simple 3-5 day repair became a ongoing 3 week issue firstly there was a misunderstanding on my parts being ordered and it wasn't even placed until the day i brought my car in which was 2 weeks later so not sure why that happened. they will not admit to being at fault and owning up to the mistakes no further explanation on repair time because of ev vehicle mentioned in the beginning once the initial quoted repairs were fixed they found another problem. this became a multiple occurrence with problems keep coming up causing major delay. they are not clear with the reasoning behind additional service. i do not understand why all the issues were not found out all at once in the beginning. they only make up excuses to delay the issue without any proof i did not feel they handle this situation professionally because they mentioned about my rental car due date hinting they can take their time with the repair not knowing it is causing me additional out of pocket fee they lack serious communication (never call with updates) i have to be the one to call every time and follow up. they always speak to me in a condescending tone. the hours are non accommodating to people who don't work a monday to friday 9-5 job. they are closed everyday at 4:30 and not even open on the weekend?? how does this make sense i felt taken advantage of due to my race gender and age. with my lack of car knowledge they did not provide the support and assurance i needed. not once did i feel they showed any empathy. there was never an apology for the inconvenience if i could give 0 stars i would because they don't even deserve 1 star HIGHLY DO NOT RECOMMEND be glad i am not naming names because (HE) continued to be rude and unprofessional until the very end of this whole situation. read more

Victor is a true professional who is proactive in communication and able to identify and repair the most severe of damages. I just got my Mercedes, which was smashed into the curb while it was parked, back from Victor and his team's care and thus far everything seems great. I needed to get a water leak fixed for some time, so I brought my car in here for an estimate. They say it's gonna cost $150-$300 for an inspection to see what's wrong. So far so good. They tell me it's the windshield. Alright, they tell me the new estimate is ~$720. So I give them the go-ahead. A windshield replacement costs ~$250 from two other quotes I got, and all I need them to do is pop mine off and put it back on well sealed, so I know the price is really high, but I figure hey, it's already in their shop and it's worth the convenience. They also tell me at this point that the current windshield might crack when they take it off (and of course, gave me no estimate if it did). Well shoot. Oh well. I tell them that's okay go for it. Guess what? It cracked! These are professionals after all. Well the new estimate for this $250 job is now: ~$1,520.00. Well that's way too much and I say no thank you on the replacement, just go ahead and put the cracked one on and I'll get it replaced for $250 with someone else, so my grand total is only like $1000. But guess what? I can't. They already did the work, before I OK'd it. So I protest about the insane price, but there's nothing I can do. After protesting enough they demanded I pay in cash, and threatened to lien my vehicle for $250 every day I didn't pay. They practically dangled my own keys in front of my face if I didn't like them writing their own check. The whole process took almost a week when a replacement and inspection should have taken no more than a day or two. They love having your keys for as long as possible, so they have the maximum pressure on you. These people are professional extortionists. Whatever you do, DO NOT give them your keys and sign anything, or they'll write their own check with your money, and threaten you if you protest. EDIT: within just hours of posting this, these guys tried to tell Yelp that this review was not for Sunset Auto Reconstruction. They tried to take down this review. Clearly they'll go through any dishonest lengths necessary to artificially pump up their Yelp rating. I guess you can't even trust their Yelp reviews. "We run an honest shop" -Victor read more

Very strange/bad experience with these folks. First, the guy who came to tow my car to a body shop (after being hit from behind) talked me into taking it to his friend's place (this place), saying he could maybe cut the deductible in half for me. Talked a lot about the great work they do, which I verified on Yelp and compared to the place my insurance was recommending I go. So I switched to this spot. Well, when the car was towed there and work finally began, I asked about what this guy said about the deductible. I was pretty much scolded and firmly told that wouldn't be happening, and that he doesn't work for the shop. So... why is he out there drumming up business for you guys? At this point, my car was already there, and they had good reviews, so I went with it. It took an average amount of time to do the work (needed new bumper, light covers, and trunk needed realignment from directional force). When my car was "done," I went to check it out. Only realized when I got home that there was a new scratch on a panel above where the accident was (which I know is new because it wasn't in the damage pics from right after the accident) *and* the trunk isn't aligned properly, so if you close it softly, it just bounces back open. It also scrapes on the right side at the inner arm that supports the trunk. I have fought back and forth between insurance and this shop to get that scratch repaired, and didn't want to take the car back for the trunk fix until I knew the scratch would be repaired too, at the same time. The shop recommended I take the car back for the trunk repair and then bring it back later for the scratch repair, once insurance OKd it. But who can actually give up their car, going back and forth and back and forth, for several different body shop visits?! And of course, insurance said "hell no" to covering a scratch that wasn't from the accident. So bottom line, there's weird stuff going on with this shop and a tow guy who apparently isn't associated with them, and they don't do great work. They also don't take accountability for scratches they put on your car in the process of fixing it, and they'll be totally fine asking you to disrupt the heck out of your life taking your car in for 3 different appointments, which should just have been one. Worst body shop experience I've ever had. read more

After a full weekend of going home to volunteer and provide my support to evacuees and survivors of the North Bay fires, coming home to San Francisco and waking up to a broken window from an attempted car burglary was a little disheartening, needless to say. Nevertheless, I was to not let it weigh me down as it is an issue easily fixable and nothing compared to the horrors and heartbreak I've been witnessing lately. So I sucked it up and took my car to the auto body shop down the street from my house to get the window replaced - Sunset Auto Reconstruction. I've passed by it almost every day on my run into Golden Gate Park, and after hearing good things about the shop and receiving a better quote than the last place I checked out, I decided to get it done there. The person I worked with was John the owner, who is a very humble, present, and overall pleasant man to interact with. We immediately got to talking about the 2012 Giants World Championship Series poster on his wall, then proceeded to talk about the fires in the north bay, our friends whom have been affected, my experience volunteering, as well as the social work I do in the local community. He made an easy call and let me know the part would be there in a few short hours. After coming back later in the afternoon, he asked me how my day at work went and before I knew it, my car was ready. The window was not only repaired but he had also kindly vacuumed all the broken glass from my backseat. When I asked him if he took card, he replied that he didn't take anything. After a bit of confusion and asking him if he was serious, I realized he wasn't charging me the $100 he originally quoted me. I began to cry and said that was extraordinarily generous, and he teared up as well saying that I do very good work. We embraced and I thanked him profusely. After so much tragic devastation and an extreme sense of hopelessness, this touching act of human kindness was so remarkably moving... And will most certainly be enough for me to return to this business in the future as well as spread the word to all my friends and family here in San Francisco. 10 out of 5 stars for not only your business but for giving me hope and inspiration in human kind. read more
