I want to get something out there to anyone who is thinking of hiring Ricky, who is the owner of this business. He is a thief. I paid him $200 as a deposit to make me keys for my car. He took my money and after10 unanswered text later, I have nothing. He is a despicable business owner. I gave him every opportunity to make good on the work or simply refund my money. I texted and called him many, many times hoping he would come to his senses, even offering to withhold this review if he simply gave me back the $200 that he took from me. But of course he didn't respond to that. What a worthless waste of energy he is. Absolutely no business ethics. No integrity. Like the other negative reviews on this thread he failed at the most basic task of business. Even worse than that he stole my money. Not good. Ricki has just given us a new back door lock because the back door lock had stopped working properly. The new lock works with the old key which matches the front door lock. Magic! I then asked him about giving us a digital front door lock which wasn't possible with our old style of front door lock. So, we came up with a sound, secure solution. He did a great job, made it look good and satisfied all our requirements for a reasonable price. I am really happy with him and all he did for us. He tried I give him that but he was unable to help me with my Cadillac it kept programming and then deprograming once I left vehicle over and over again and now I'm stuck getting it towed to the dealer to have them fix it cuz I can't even start the car at all when I already paid Ricky $450 + a $20 tip. My car is stuck on street about to be towed with angry neighbors because I can't get the key fob to work and get my car moved. He might be great in basic keys but if you have a newer car especially a luxury like a 2018 premium luxury Cadillac go to the dealer don't get screwed and learn the hard way like me some of these cars need better programming that only the dealership can accomplish successfully so I wouldn't bother w a locksmith unless it's an old car and a basic key cuz I did and now I'm still stuck dealing with this after almost two weeks and gonna be down an additional $500+ buying a second correctly programmed key at the dealer which is shoulda just done originally. Ricky and Carpinteria Lock & Key are a 5-star Service business. Apparently, another 46 Yelpers agree with me. Do you know how hard you have to work to have a perfect 5-star review on Yelp? And it's clear Ricky deserves it. I had a pretty awful experience with the last locksmith company I hired here in Santa Barbara and wrote about it here. You can look it up if you wish, but I want to focus on the good. I want to raise up a guy that totally made my day and continues to show high integrity and skill. The lock on my home office door to the garage broke. It broke locked shut. It's the primary door I and my family use to go to and from. A major inconvenience now that it was locked shut. A previous company had repaired it a year ago and now it had done the exact same thing. It was after 9pm on a weeknight when I posted the query for quotes here on Yelp. I was stunned to hear back from Ricky within a half hour! This guy really cares! So we wrote back and forth on Yelp till a little after 10pm and he sent me his cell since the Yelp chat was not allowing me to send him a photo. I sent him the photo he requested, but felt bad it was so late. I waited till the next morning after 9am and texted again to see how soon he could get out to my house in Santa Barbara. He had a busy schedule, but squeezed me in. 3 hours later--at the exact time I was hoping he could come--Ricky was here repairing and replacing it. When he was done with that, he fixed the aforementioned return and made it better than it ever was. When he was done with that, I showed him a bathroom door that never locked properly and he ordered parts for that. It was one of those moments where I reached out to everyone in the house and kept saying, "Are you sure there's nothing else lock-related that needs repair?" Ricky was that good. He's human too, and when he showed up today with the parts for the bathroom door, we realized he had the wrong hardware. But he just said, "Hey, no problem. I'll have it on Monday and return. No charge, of course!" It almost made the whole experience with him better to know that he's not perfect. As I've said in other reviews here, you never know the true measure of a company until something goes wrong. Those are the moments that show you who you're really dealing with. I still felt badly for him having to return a 3rd time and said I'd be fine paying my bill thus far, or even ahead of time for all of his trouble. Ricky just said, "Nope. Not the way we work. Not until the work is done and you're completely happy." WOW. When was the last time you worked with a guy like that on anything? Yes, you can call us super fans of Carpinteria Lock & Key. I contacted Ricky because of all his great reviews. Not sure what happened but after a couple of cordial texts back and forth, he ghosted me. Never followed up on the type of door lock he would suggest and didn't even have the courtesy to contact me just to say that he wasn't interested in the job. Not into someone who doesn't follow-up and wouldn't trust or rely on him after this experience. I needed a key made for my van which had an ignition enabler. I was told by the dealer that I had to take it to them. The dealer wanted $350 for the keys because they had to be programmed. I bought a Ninja 300 motorcycle and needed spare keys. Home Depot didn't have the blank, but Ricky got some in a couple days and made two extra keys for me. He's tech savvy and "Johnny on the Spot" when it comes to service. He says due to a lot of motorcycles passing through town, he tries to have blanks on hand for many of them. Side note: I also ride a bicycle and coincidentally we almost ran into him today (not really) by the Polo Field, and he showed extreme caution and respect for our errant ways. I bought a blank key fob for my 2004 Honda accord and shopped around for someone to laser cut it for me and I was immediately going to go with a AAA approved locksmith but they wanted $90.00 just to cut the key I had everything else. So I thought that was a little much, and called Carpinteria lock and key and Ricky was the technician, the guy is phenomenal. First let me tell you, he only wanted $40.00 and met me off the freeway on Johnson Dr. And cut my key in less than 5 minutes. Bought the key fob for $10.00 online and put my stuff inside it and $40.00 for Ricky to engrave it. $50.00 for a brand new key, not a $100.00 that it almost cost me, thanks to Carpinteria lock and key I would recommend these guys to anybody A+ in my book. There is a reason why this business is so highly rated and that is Ricky's amazing communication and genuine care for customers and all people really! We lost our car keys at the beach in Carp and I was in a panic because we live over an hour away. I felt really anxious about the idea of towing the car that far or taking my young (unvaccinated) child in a hired car with a stranger. Ricky came to my rescue calmly reassuring me over the phone that there would be a way to get a replacement key fob made relatively quickly. Unfortunately, he didn't have the model of the key fob to match my car. Now it could have ended there, but he took the time to help me think through another solution, suggesting that I contact a dealership to see if they had the part in stock and if so he could meet me to program it, or call another locksmith to see if they had it. It's not often that a business owner recommends a competitor and he gave me not only the name of the business but told me to speak to the owner and use his name as a reference. When the other locksmith arrived, he mentioned that he might not have taken this job since it is out of his typical area, but he did because Ricky called him directly to ask if he would. Thankfully the other locksmith was able to make the replacement key and we were able to get home before sunset. I am extremely grateful to Ricky for going out of his way to help us. This review is long overdue. I was visiting SB for a weekend getaway and my purse was stolen (along with car keys). After calling another locksmith first, and waiting around hours, ultimately still not able to start my car, I called Ricky. He was super fast & responsive and drove out right away. He looked like he knew what he was doing, vs the other locksmith that came out with no actual tools for programming my key. He made it happen right away!! A big thank you to Ricky from Carpinteria Lock & Key for coming over and making a spare key for my car. I had recently bought a used Mazda 3 but it only came with one key. Since these keys come with transponders I knew u can't just go to Home Depot or something and get a spare. So in fear of losing it I called Carp Lock & Key and they came over and made a spare for my car. I know that going to the dealership would cost an arm and a leg so I didn't want to go that route. Pricing ended up being way cheaper than what the dealership wanted. Response time was incredible. Ricky was very knowledgeable and answered all the questions I had.
