I'm a UCSB professor and a Hispanic man with brown skin. I believe I experienced racial discrimination and/or xenophobia at Tri-County Locksmith in Goleta, CA, on Thursday, March 20th. I went into the store dressed in casual sportswear to ask for help replacing the battery in my car key fob--I had already purchased the correct battery and brought it with me. I simply asked if they had a screwdriver or if someone could help open the fob. A white man in the store initially said he could assist, but then abruptly changed his mind. He turned away, stood rigidly, and said he couldn't do it because he "didn't have the right screwdriver." I reminded him that just two weeks earlier, I had brought in my other key fob, and a different employee at the same store had replaced the battery without issue. He responded dismissively, avoided eye contact, looked at me with visible suspicion, and said, "Maybe someone took the screwdriver--just come back Monday." The sudden refusal, the inconsistent excuse, and the hostile body language made it clear that I was being treated differently--not because of the request, but because of how I looked. This behavior felt racially motivated and xenophobic. The experience was humiliating and deeply uncomfortable. No one should be denied service based on race, appearance, or perceived foreignness. read more

I called out tri county lock to pick and remove two basic barrel locks. The man over the phone explained that it would be $75 to come out and $50 for each half hour of labor. He told me that the tech they would send out would be a professional and be able to get the job done pretty quickly. Unfortunately, I was unable to be there when the work took place, but I trusted them to do the job completely. My girlfriend supervised the work and was unaware of the complete job that needed to be done. The locksmith came out and immediately insisted on drilling out the locks. Not ideal, but totally fine. He drills the first lock out in a matter of minutes, very impressive. However, lock number 2, which was IDENTICAL to the first lock stumped him. He spent approximately 45 minutes attempting to drill that lock out. In the end, he gave up, and tried to show my girlfriend that he couldn't get the lock off. My girlfriend then attempted to open the machine, and it came right apart. This super experienced technician spent nearly an hour trying to drill out an already compromised lock. Immediately after my girlfriend got the machine open for him, he handed her a bill for $195 which was more than what we were originally quoted. She paid the invoice, because we had to meet with someone across town. When I got home to inspect the work, I noticed that they didn't even remove the locks. They didn't clean up. Personally, I think the guy was embarrassed by what a bad job he did and wanted to get out of there because there was no reason why that job should have taken so long. You should check out the pictures of what they left me with. I attempted to reach out to them to rectify it that same day. The guy on the phone was incredibly rude but then assured me someone would come out to fix it the next day. He then confirmed again with me the next morning that someone would come out. Later in the day, I discover additional damage caused by the debris left from the job they didn't finish. I attempt to call tri county back and the guy had a tantrum like meltdown where he kept speaking over me and putting words in my mouth and trying to rush me off the phone. At one point he even made the comment of "Let my guy come out and then you can complain" and just kept repeating himself so I couldn't talk. Despite him acting like a 4 year old, he says he will personally come out to my house to inspect the work that day. I thank him for doing so. I wish this story has a happy ending, but unfortunately he ghosted me. He never called me back and never came to inspect the work like he said he would. I'm beyond disappointed with the work they did. I was overcharged, and they didn't even do the job they were hired to do. You would think for the amount I paid, they would have an ounce of professionalism... Make this right and I will change my review. read more

Tri-county Locksmith, inc. is a straight-up rip-off operation. Rude service and opportunist business model. I have found myself stuck in a remote camping sight when my keys snapped in half in the trunk of my car lock. AAA directed me to the Tri-county Locksmith, inc. and they demanded $525.00 for the new keys. When I questioned the price they told me that no one else will be willing to drive to help me and threatened to increase the price if I do not agree to take their service right away. It was very disappointing to see that AAA is allowing such gross price gouging from their designated vendor. Fortunately, I got a recommendation from the camp staff to contact Scott Reardon's Locksmith Service. He was friendly, quick, and efficient. DO NOT DUPLICATE I read such good reviews on this place but my experience was something less than bad. We are a property owners and just as a precaution when we get a new tenant I usually replace the key with a quickset key. The last time I did this, I somehow got my main key which is supposed to stay in the key box, mixed up with the would be tenant's. In my confusion I noticed that the key did not have Do Not Duplicate on it, so I got out my stamp and ping! problem solved. Except my wife asked me later where the "master" or main key was. To which I showed her but it was also a Do Not Duplicate. So I now had to rectify this by going down and getting another made. So I went to Minors and asked the key maker there what to do. He told me to "You need to go to a locksmith, like Tri-County and have them do it. They may ask you for proof of ownership or something." Today I called them and explained my situation to a gentlemen who seemed quite excited and willing to spend a minute explaining the difference between an actual master key and a regular Do not Duplicate. So realizing quickly that I had committed a vernacular no no, that only a muggle could make, within the magical kingdom of Key World, I let him explain it all to me. Once we had ended the lesson I asked if they could make me the key and I clearly stated, that I needed a main key that did NOT have the "Do Not Duplicate" stamped on it. and I asked if I needed any documentation. He said no, just come down and he would take care of it. I was so happy! Wow this guy did talk alot but he was being really cool. Once at the location I stood waiting for the guy behind the counter to finish his story. He seemed to be talking to a friend who was waiting to leave, so I waited. and waited. Until finally I pulled out my phone to get a clip of story. I do not know if my phone picked it up but it I think i got another minute before I heard him say "okay that will be..." This was a customer that the guy was literally holding hostage with the purchase so he could tell his story. I realized this was probably the guy I talked to on the phone. Just then another gentlemen entered and asked if I needed help. I came forth and said I called and was told to come in, and I explained my situation, to which he said, "sorry I cant do that." pointing to the "Do Not Duplicate" on the key. I was now getting a little frustrated. " I spoke to someone on the phone, explained in detail my issues and they told me to come down. Now you say you cant?" He looked at the other, handed me the key and walked back into his office. The other customer had by this time left and the other guy asked how he could help. I revisited the conversation on the phone and he took the key and made duplicate. Before handing the key back he started explaining that "keys have a code that you should really learn.... this one is a six..." I just nodded and thanked him and put my Do Not Duplicate key back on the key ring. While handing the gentlemen the credit card. It was at this time I picked up the New duplicate main key. My relief was short lived because, as I turned it over it read. "Do Not Duplicate." I handed it back to him and said, and showed him that the key he chose as the main key was the wrong one. He insisted that he was not allowed to do it any other way. I said that is not what I need nor what I asked for. He said "that is what we do." To which I placed the key on the counter and stated that I do not want the key. The gentlemen grew angry and walked away exclaiming "This is the last time I do someone a favor!" I left. I went home dialed a locksmith in Santa Barbara and they said I could come in with proof of ownership and a valid ID and they would make a new original house Key. I gave myself 90 minutes to calm down before writing this review. I would like to chalk this down as really poor customer service. poor representation of a business. By the reaction of his coworker I have a feeling this guy does lots of "favors." Only it backfired this time because I was not asking for favors. Time for a beer! Sorry for misspells or word crimes. I want thank Tri-County Locksmiths for resolving a difficult situation recently, I bought a Kwikset lock set from home depot to replace an inoperative lock on my front door. The Kwisrt ock set was incomplete and was unable to replace my existing door hardware. Kwikset's response after an hour waiting on the phone was. "We can send you the missing parts in a week" My front door with no hardware, was now unusable and insecure. I called Tri-County Lock and they sent out a technician named Sean who expertly repaired the broken lock and adjusted all the other doors hardware. Now all the doors and locks work perfectly, and the charge was less than the incomplete Kwikset lockset that I returned to Home Depot. This was a job well done! read more

Locksmith, Sean, from Tri-County Locksmith showed up to my house wearing no mask. Started to repair the broken Baldwin door lock on my front door and told me he would have to come back for a second appointment and replace the lock once he ordered the necessary parts. After weeks of trying to contact Sean at Tri-County Locksmiths to get the job done at my house, he told me that he would take care of me. It's been over two months, they still have the parts to my Baldwin lock and did not complete the job. I have tried calling and messaging them and have gotten nowhere. I thought this was going to be an easy process, but Tri-County locksmiths made it so much more painful. Stay away! read more

Great service. Found this place through the Axxess card. I called their office twice - first to get a quote and then to book. Both times I was greeted and taken care of quickly. It was a bit of an emergency and they fit me in that day as requested. The gentleman who showed up was very nice and quick! I had called a couple other locksmiths in the morning. The service was not nearly as great. I had to wait back for calls. Then one guy called hours later, and when I told him I had already booked someone he got angry and told me "why would you do that. Although I offered to pay someone to come out, the person that answered gave me instructions over the phone, saved me a lot of time and some $$. No charge from them. After losing the keys to my trailer, Tri-County Locksmiths came out to pick the lock and get me back in. Unfortunately, Sean struggled to get the lock opened, and damaged the lock cylinder in the process. I've had to replace the lock mechanism since returning home. Also he could not make me a replacement key from the code number on the inside - I got that from another locksmith business the next day. He denied any responsibility for damaging the lock, claiming he could not possibly have broken anything - even though the lock had been working just fine for years beforehand. Note there are two businesses with very similar names - Tri-Couinty Locksmiths (tricountylocks.com) and Tri-County Locksmith (tricountylocksmiths.net) This review is for the first one - and it has decidedly mixed reviews here on Yelp. Today I somehow completely snapped my car key in half and of course I didn't have a spare key so I was stranded downtown. I called AAA and they sent out Hector from Tri-County Locksmith. He got there a lot quicker than I was told he would and he was able to make a new key for me. He even made me a spare as well. Had a great experience with Hector, he came right on time, nailed a complex job that everyone else said they couldn't do. Lock works like a charm, and he was reasonable... all around great service. Beware, we got stuck in a scam before we went to Tri county, where these men from LA, a mystery company came up and destroyed our door, said they finished the job , which they did not and then tried to charge us 700$ . My mother locked herself out of her house late in the afternoon shortly before most businesses close. I called Tri-County and they offered to have someone come to let us in within 30 minutes (despite the late hour). Sean (sp?) arrived in half the time and helped us out efficiently. He made spare keys that were ideal for my mother and was very kind in the process. Very reasonable quote for the service. Highly recommend Tri-County. I was locked out of my RV which is in storage here in Santa Barbara. I made an appt the meet there. Hector was waiting for me when I arrived. He started working on the lock and said" there's someone in there" he got the door open and a man was standing there yelling at us to go away. He had broken in somehow. Hector quietly moved me away from the RV and pulled out his phone and called 911. I'm a senior woman and felt scared and vulnerable. I do not recommend this company. I hate writing bad reviews , however I had a really terrible experience with a man working here. 1 year ago I requested a replacement key be made with a fob. I was given a replacement key that was temporary until the fob was able to be created. They informed me they would call when it was ready. I never heard from them , and eventually that key fell apart because it was given to me very loose. I called on the weekend and a guy came out and helped me hold the pieces together to get the car started. That lasted another few months- finally I lost the main piece and called them on a friday morning. I explained the situation and proceeded to get lectured by a man on the other side of the phone stating i should always have 2-3 keys and that I should have called. While i know i could have probably done a better job of following up , in ever got a call from them like they said they would? Okay, that wasn't so bad - although I don't like to be lectured when i'm considering doing business with a company. He informed me that he would do some research on the key i needed and then return my call. I never received a voicemail from him so a few hours later I called. I got a hold of a man in the shop and asked him to please have the other guy call me back ( he never gave me his name). He said he would give him the message , since he had no idea what job I was talking about. at around 5pm I still hadn't heard , so I called back and explained the situation. I explained I had called earlier and the man proceeded to yell at me saying "no you did not call" and that he was "waiting for me." I calmly apologized for the misunderstanding but that I did call and got someone in the shop. He proceeded to yell saying "Dont argue with me!!". I hung up. I called ESP and they literally drove to me within 30 minutes as I walked home from work- and made me 2 keys for $230. The guy was so sweet and I feel valued my business. read more

Remember the good ol' days when people were decent for the sake of decency? That's what I was reminded of leaving this place. Let's back up. I had a problem with the lock on my car's truck, so I brought the car into Tri-County's shop so they can check it out. I was worried the problem will end up costing me an arm and a leg, but it turns out (from what I could understand) the lock's internal mechanism was stuck out of place and needed to be pushed back and lubed with a little WD-40. The locksmith fixed it in 2 minute's time, then simply told me to take care. Stunned, I asked if I owed him anything, and he replied with "nah... just recommend us to a friend." Indeed, I will!
