Carolina Key was the right choice! I just purchased a pre-owned Chrysler Pacifica that only came with one key fob (push button start). My wife and I needed a duplicate made. What I appreciate most about Matt, the owner, is that he has the heart of a teacher, and really wants to ensure that your needs are met correctly the first time. I had done some research on my own prior to reaching out for a pro, and he lent his expertise to steer us clear of possible gotchas with certain aftermarket remotes. The one he ordered for us is truly identical to Chrysler OEM and after programming functions perfectly (including starting the car, most importantly!) He cut the physical emergency key as well. I reached out to him because I lost my one and only car key right before the Christmas holiday. Matt immediately called me back and held my hand through the whole process of getting into my car, getting me the keys, and reprogramming my car. Disclaimer: I did not shop around for the best price. I checked their website and they offered what I needed and they had good Google reviews. So I can't comment on their competitive pricing. I'm a very cheap person especially if it's something I can get by without. I have a very old Accord and the original key with the key fob handle broke a couple of years ago. But not wanting to spend money getting it fixed, I just used my valet key with a different key fob. The battery in the key fob I was using died but instead of replacing the battery, I just used my valet key and opening the trunk using the trunk release lever (yes--I would unlock my car with the valet key and go to the driver's seat just so I could open the trunk when I had no reason to get inside the car). And then my trunk release gave out one day. And I had no way to open the trunk! (I can use the original key and I did because I had stuff in the trunk I needed to get out ASAP). But it was a little too inconvenient with the key handle broken off and I decided to become an adult and get a fully functioning car key again. So that's when I looked online to see what places offered what I wanted---replacing the battery in the original key fob and getting the original key to the key fob. I found pictures on Carolina Key's website that resembled my broken keys so I sent an email and received a reply saying that I would need to call then so they can order the necessary parts. So I called and it turns out they couldn't attach the original key to the key fob but order a new key fob and cut the key like the original key that I have. They placed the order for me, gave me an estimated delivery date, and made me an appointment for the Durham location. They told me to bring everything I had (aka all the broken parts). Once I went into the store, I didn't have to wait any and was out the door in 15 minutes. All of this process took less than a week and a little under $70. The price probably depends on which car you have and other variables, but all in all, having an actual key that locks/unlocks everything and from the distance is worth $70 to me and I wish I had gotten this done two years ago! read more

I was sold a Gen 1 Prius with no fob and one key through a private sale. Apparently, if that key were be lost/damaged, it is an expensive PITA to replace without the master. I called Carolina Key to get extras cut and programmed while my key was in working condition. Matt understood exactly what I needed and how to help. He was very friendly and accommodating as well (I missed my original appointment and he fit me in as soon as he could). He even noticed an issue I was aware of that I forgot to mention. So, I realized my lost my key to my pick up on Saturday evening 3/21/2020 and I posted on FB about needing a locksmith and while several places were mentioned, the owner (Matt Overby) with Carolina Key quickly responded to my post and came to the rescue. He quoted me a price and time of when the key would be available and on Sunday morning I get a text from him saying he didn't have any of the keys in stock and would have to delay. Well, needless to say, he didn't stop there, he called several businesses and found me a key and still provided the service he promised on the day he promised. Will definitely use him again. First let me state with over 100 reviews, I've only given a 1 star only 5 times... and some of those I upgraded after the vendor acknowledged they were wrong THIS GUY IS A RIP OFF ARTIST............DO NOT USE THIS GUY IF YOU HAVE A EUROPEAN CAR.........HE WILL FAIL and BLAME YOUR CAR. Charges me $800 for 2 keys, tells me the dealer is over $1500.... after his failure I still have to go to the Jaguar dealer, and get the same key made for $200 each Blames my car on his failure.........he is supposed to be the expert on Jaguar keys............got the keys and cut them, could not program them to my car... and blames my car on his failure........the idiot even forgot to put a battery in each fob..... DO NOT PAY FULL PRICE UP FRONT, AND I RECOMMEND YOU BUY YOUR KEY FOBS FROM THE DEALER OR ONLINE... AS for programming your keys.........good luck..........and make sure he buts a battery in it NOW WATCH, the idiot will blame me and my car.......isnt he supposed to know??? DIDNT I PAY HIM TO KNOW? THE POINT OF THIS REVIEW IS GET THE QUOTE IN WRITING AT LEAST VIA EMAIL. At first Matt and Myles were super nice so I totally understand all the good reviews. But it's a different story if anything goes awry. First, we ordered keys for two cars. The charge was $150 for two keys and $100 for each car site visit (to come out to the house and even though the two cars were sitting together in the same driveway). We paid $500 in advance. When they came out, one set of keys did not work (Accord). Then, we found a key to the Accord, so we did not need two keys, only one. We asked about getting two remotes instead and stated that we would come in and avoid the $100 fee for coming out. Matt said they we could get remotes and the difference would be $100. I assumed he would refund me the difference when I came in. When I took the car in to pick up the key and two remotes, Myles was there and asked me to PAY $100. I explained that I'd already paid $250 and I brought the car in, instead of requiring a home visit. Matt tried to reach Myles to clarify, but was unable to do so. I picked up one key and one remote. He said Myles would reach out when he returned. The next day, Myles called and explained that the remotes were more expensive and that I owed him $100. I tried to explain my understanding of our agreement but he cut me off and got extremely belligerent. I told him I wasn't going to argue with him, that I simply wanted to explain my understanding. I was hoping to offer a compromise given the misunderstanding and the fact that neither or he nor I had any written quote or agreement. He simply would not let me explain. I tie him I would come in. I wrote down my understanding and went to the office. Matt picked it up and said is this yours. I said yes and that I wanted him to explain my understanding. Without reading it, he said that he understood my position, he wasn't going to read it, I could have it back or he would simply throw it away, which he then did, tossing it into the trash can right then. There have to be other places that can provide keys and good customer service, and I guess i'll fins them and send folks that way. BEWARE AND GET IT IN WRITING. read more

So I initially saved a deal from NextDoor for Carolina Key that was BOGO Free key fob, so I called the office and spoke to Myasia? Nyasia? I can't remember her name, but I told her I had that deal and she tells me it's buy one get one half off and gives me the quote, so I hung up. I went through my email and found it where it said BOGO free and called back and she said "oh if you have the email then we can honor it," so she quotes me $250 for 2 2018 Toyota Camry key fobs and schedules me for the next day at a certain time. She then calls me back a few minutes later saying that she has to reschedule me because SHE looked at the schedule wrong (she did apologize), so I schedule to come in that Friday, 10/15 at 2p. I pay the $250 for the keys over the phone and she tells me I'll get an email shortly from them. I get the email and she forgot to mention that tax was included so my total was a little over $216. I get a call from Matt on Friday morning, saying that he can get me in earlier, and to come right then, so I did (thinking that all I was doing was picking the keys up) and when I get there, he's sitting in a car with the door open and tells me he'll close the door so I can go inside. No introduction, no I'll be right with you, nothing, so I assumed he was the owner of the car. So I go in, and the office is empty. He comes in a few minutes later and said I got there right on time as he was finishing up the car that he had been sitting in. He then proceeds to explain that I need to leave the key with him to be cut and it would take 45 minutes to an hour. I told him that I wasn't aware that was the process. He claims that he heard the young lady tell me that and I insisted that she didn't. I had already left work and needed to get the process started, so I walked over to Nantucket and ordered lunch to wait. Overall, I wasn't really impressed with the "first impression" of the company. About 15 minutes later and 2 bites into my sandwich, I get a call from him that my keys are ready. I walk back over and he's looking at his phone, says "Have a nice day," and points to my 3 keys on the counter. No thank you for your business, apologies for the incorrect timing quote, nothing. If good customer service is something you require of a business, this isn't the one. read more
