They sell liters!
Ryan S.

I've been here a few times and really want to like it. It seems like it wouldn't be bad if you came in with a ground of friends, but every time I've gone the atmosphere has been quiet and a little depressing. It does have a dive bar feel, but the type of dive bar where the 2 or so barflies give you the evil eye as you walk in, as if to say "what the hell are you doing here?" One time I went, half the beers on the menu were out. The bottles of alcohol behind the bar are just for show -- they don't actually contain any booze, so forget mixed drinks. The credit card limit is high, so you'd need to drink at least a liter of beer to hit it. When they do have it in stock, the beers are some decent German brands. The bartenders are friendly and take care of you. All in all, it's not my favorite place to go, but I do occasionally like to stop by when I'm in the mood.

Ein Maß Hirter. Sehr lecker.

Last of the great old Lincoln Square bars. Retains all of the charm and character its maintained for years. The beer list is small but great. Excellent German beers on draft, rotated based on the season. Always playing music too.

Hirter draft beer

German dive bar with awesome character, hospitality, and German draft beers on tap for great prices.

Who knew that you could get frozen cocktails for $5 in this tiny little bar in Lincoln Square? After imbibing on about a pitcher of 'em, I do now. And, the Monday night bartender actually loves making them! Sigh... my hangover was totally his idea ;) They serve huge steins of German beer that, for some reason, pair perfectly with some Johnny Cash on the jukebox. This watering hole may just be the most divey of the bars in this neighborhood, but I for one really dig its quaint atmosphere with outdated, ugly wood paneling and random decor strewn about with neither rhyme nor reason. This bar has its group of dedicated regulars, and don't be surprised if one of them buys you and your friends a round as they did for my group! Behold: the generosity of strangers at the Hansa Clipper.

This place is great! While I was there a guy walked in and bought everyone in the bar a shot. Fun place.

This is one of the best spots in the city. I didn't get a chance to go to the patio outside, but I will definitely try it out next time. Special shoutout to the staff who recommended some amazing wines I would have otherwise never heard of.

Stopped into this wine bar on a rainy Sunday right when they opened with five of my friends. They…read morewere able to seat us immediately in the spacious corner booth. The ambiance is really nice without feeling too "stuffy". Bar was gorgeous and service was friendly and helpful, allowing my boyfriend to sample some wines before going in on some bottles. Prices were what you'd expect for a trendy natural wine bar. The complimentary corn nuts in the antique dish were a cute touch. The charcuterie board with mixed meat and cheese was really small though. Only three pieces of cheese for five people... it made it feel like an awkward fight over who'd get to try some. The gluten free crackers were appreciated though. We ended up ordering more food including the "party tray" which I would describe more as charcuterie nachos. We didn't really know what to expect with this one so we got the canned mussels but it really would've tasted better with the prosciutto instead. It included a whipped cheese, olives, and cornichons piled onto potato chips. Less of a tray and more of a nacho-style dish. If we return next time we're in town, I'd skip the food and focus more on the wine. Beyond that, it was a fun time!

Just know this is NOT the same burger as the famed Au Cheval…read more This place has a reasonably priced smash burger with all the trimmings. Decent flavor. Fries are just so-so and when we visited they were so salty they were inedible. If you are looking for a quick burger fix, this is a great place to drop in! There is very little indoor seating but they created a nice outdoor patio area with picnic tables and cute umbrellas for shade. Perfect for summer outdoor dining. Service is reasonably quick. The place does have excellent ice cream, shakes (boozy shakes, yes please!) and concretes. Good go-to summer place for quick service meal.

Unfortunately not the best experience here, which seems to be pretty on par with a lot of folks…read more Given there are so many places for good burgers, Small Cheval fell pretty flat. The prices are way too high for the amount and quality of food you receive. The dijonnaise sauce was the highlight of the food for me. Everything else didn't have a unique, distinct quality I had been hoping for in a place like this. I found it odd that when I requested the lettuce and tomato to add, I had to add it myself instead of it already being added to the burger. The fries weren't anything to rave about either. We didn't try any ice cream, but if I'm back maybe I'll do that instead.
