Carney's Hot Dog
Steve S.

Definitely some delicious hot dogs here. I went with Carney's dog, that comes with tomatoes, onions and their hearty, delicious chili. I also asked for my hot dog frank to be split and then grilled and that made it even more tasty. The frank had nice char marks and was juicy all throughout. Great dog! The ambiance here is special, as you're located inside of a former real train carriage. That gives out the vibes of excitement, like you're grabbing a quick hot dog before reaching the next town. Customer service here is attentive and professional. Good experience for a quick, quality hot dog.

Carney's is a great diner. The experience of eating in an old Railroad car is wonderful and that ambience is matched by the amazing food. Everything is cooked to order and all the employees are wonderful. I tried a Carney's Dog with Chili Cheese fries and my friend had a cheeseburger. All of them were delicious and you recieve generous toppings on everything. To the point that next time I think I'll just get regular fries cause there was enough chili on the hot dog for both it and to top the fries. Not that I'm complaining. Everything was a delight and I look forward to coming back again. They also have some great old school shirts for sale.

This place is an institution in Los Angeles. Fantastic chili cheeseburgers, chili cheese fries, shakes, and desserts for people who love a great greasy spoon. Went there today, and the people are super nice. Someone walked in and ordered a half gallon of chili? So, yah, people love this place, and rightfully so!

Love Carneys!! Been here a couple times and def will be back for more. Their burgers are fresh and I love their menu bc you can get a small or big patty. Their hotdogs are also really good!! And their fries can also be thin or thick and I love that. Staff is super quick and this place is always clean. I also love trains lol. Delicious!! Thanks!

This visit was a great trip down memory lane, it's been 25 years since I have visited Carneys in Studio City. I was surprised how much things have grown around this location. The Train car alone brought back so many great memories. Not a lot has changed, the food options are plentiful. We went for it during this trip, not sure when I will be back. We had an original Carney's hotdog with chili, onions and mustard, under the Red Eye menu we also had the Carneys hotdog with a sausage and chili, this was tied in with chili fries and Train wreck Fries, with grilled onions and thousand island dressing. I really enjoyed the chili, I love Tommy's chili but Carneys chili is just slightly better. The inside of the train car seem so small, they had many seating options inside and outdoors they have multiple seating areas. You will find the restrooms in the front train car.

Carneys is such a Valley staple. I grew up coming here and it still hits every time. The fact that it's inside a retired train car makes it extra unique, and it has both indoor and outdoor seating (I came during a rush and still managed to grab a spot). Parking is easy thanks to the lot and I usually find myself making Amazon returns at the Staples next door just to have an excuse to stop here. Food-wise, I love their vegetarian options. My go-to is the Veggie Sandwich (basically everything in a burger without the patty), but this time I tried the Garden Burger and it was also really solid. The real standout though is the Train Wreck Fries. Think In-N-Out's Animal Style fries, but in my opinion way better--loaded with cheese, grilled onions, and sauce. They're addicting and my absolute favorite thing on the menu. The inside is a little dated and the menu can feel overwhelming at first since there's a ton of choices, but honestly, the food makes up for it. Service isn't super fast, but the chefs are always friendly and the quality is consistently great. My friends who eat meat always enjoy the burgers and hot dogs. If you're in Sherman Oaks, Carneys is a must. Classic, nostalgic, and always satisfying.

Menu

Friendly quick service and my go-to lunch spot. You can't go wrong whether you choose their burgers or hot dogs. My favorites are the Chicagoan and New Yorker. I recommend eating inside the train car dining room for the full experience

Polish Sausage with sauerkraut and mustard, and chili cheese fries.

What a neat, unique fast food place. I've driven by here so many times and today was the day to stop in. I had a polish sausage "New Yorker" style with sauerkraut and mustard and chili/cheese fries. I can't say I was that impressed with either of my choices. Maybe a burger would have been a better option? Not sure I'll be back but it was definitely a ln experience.

Wow have passed this place countless times maybe a thousand times! Always said I'm going but until today I did and was so worth it! The chili cheese fries so delicious! The double cheeseburger well cooked! The LA dog! The ambiance is just so cozy!

I've been here at least 3 times I really love their burger dog. Never disappoints. Always with them yellow peppers of course. The service is ok not above and beyond no big deal but still. I came on a Tuesday after work it was not packed we were able to get a table to eat outside. I prefer the outside just feels less cluster phobic. But overall I will go again mostly because of the amazing food!

Always a good choice. On a hot Saturday with the breeze blowing, sitting outside with my New Yorker hotdog (sauerkraut, and mustard) and a chocolate shake. What could be finer? It's a bit busy because it's so popular. But well worth the wait. Recommend highly.

This was my second time coming here after many years. Carneys remains iconic due to its vintage train car seating and famous hot dogs / burgers. I came with my mom on a Monday afternoon for lunch and wow this place was packed! Though I have driven past here so many times since the last time in my life I was here, I could never have imagined how popular this place is! There is ample parking in the plaza parking where the traincar sits. They also offer stickers for sale and this seems like a fun place to take your kids to eat. Hamburger 5/5, my mom and I both got this. These were JUICY with both ketchup and thousand island sauce dripping out from the fresh ingredients. This was made right in front of us and felt incredibly fresh. Strawberry shake 3/5, this was a basic shake but it did come from a soda pump style machine and I didn't know when it had been made. I'm not certain if I would order this again.

Great burgers, dogs and fries. Order at the counter and find a seat in the cool old train car or on the patio outside.

Had the Carney dog with cheese. It was ok, but a bit salty and dry. I've had better chili cheese dogs that were not this expensive.

Do you have veggie dogs?

I don't see one on the menu. They do have a vegan burger - "hungry planet burger". Would love to see them add a vegan hot dog.

Yep Red Baron still there!

I have a peanut allergy, are there peanut free options?

Do they have a gluten free bun option? Id love to be able to have carneys again after being diagnosed with a gluten allergy

Yes we do! We added gluten free buns last year.

Hi, I can't eat pork so I wonder whether I can eat their burger or burger with chili?

No pork in our burgers or our chili or our hot dogs!

Ya gotta love Carney's. Ya just gotta. A train car loitering on a curve of the Sunset Strip,…read moredishing up Chili Cheeseburgers and Fries like heart disease is still undiscovered. The harshness of the fluorescent lights against the white walls, the aromatic steam rising up from the grill packed with burgers and chicken and onions, the cashier who sends soda cup lids gliding through the air from one hand to his other like a Frisbee hanging on the breeze. It's the epitome of L.A. fast food heaven, with a broader, more varied menu than the other similar places around town, and I've always liked it more than Tommy's. At first glance, the thin burger patties and chili seem interchangeable with that other venerable burger stop, but I think the quality is better at Carney's. Yes, the meat tastes better. The chili also appears very similar, but is actually not as greasy (aka easier on the tummy). Fries are definitely better: thin shoestrings cooked to order and served hot out of the fryer naked, letting you add as much or as little salt as you like. Though I also like chili fries, I order my chili on the side, so it's a neater, one dip at a time affair, which also keeps the fries crispier for longer. Tonight, as always, I ordered a Cheeseburger with just Chili. My wife, however, orders hers exactly as advertised, with chili, mustard, tomato and pickles. Both were hot off the grill, tasty and satisfying. Our order of fries was, indeed, quite crispy and piping hot, our side of chili at the ready for dipping. I also like to grab a few banana peppers, bite off the ends, and sprinkle the juice onto the burger for a little extra heat. Try it next time! And so, it was a good, old-fashioned L.A. dinner for a Thursday night, filled with flavor and classic comfort. Whether on the Strip or on Ventura Blvd., you can't go wrong when you stop for a meal at the train.

Such is the case with Heavy Handed, which debuted as a backyard pop-up just before the shutdown. Heavy Handed distinguishes itself on the basis of its short rib burger base and meme-filled marketing. Heavy Handed transitioned to a food truck in 2021 and now operates two brick-and-mortar locations across LA (this Silver Lake location just closed its doors). The Silver Lake outpost took over the space of beloved diner All Day Baby on a bustling strip of Sunset. The exterior combined HH's signature sunset-orange color palette with psychedelic, LA- and burger-themed murals designed by local artist DJ Neff. The spacious dining room was warmly lit by a red neon strip running the length of the ceiling. Seating options ranged from upholstered half-booths to standard wooden tables and chairs to the bar counter around the corner. Classic rock echoed around the room. My partner and I visited for weekend lunch. We ordered immediately, and our food was available within minutes. We opted to split a Double Short Rib Burger. Immediately, I was impressed by the crispy, slightly charred edges around the circumference. Meanwhile, the center bites were addictively rich and juicy. The thick-cut pickles added a vinegary snap, while the diced onions were caramelized to a jam-like consistency. The service was friendly and efficient. At first, we raised our eyebrows at the $13 pricetag, but we were satisfied with the generous portion and delicious taste. In a busy, burger-heavy neighborhood (including wildly popular peer smash burgers at The Win-Down and Goldburger), this was our favorite one.
