My internet connection gave out but, with such beauty around me, I didn't care. Mogollon is often described as a ghost town. That's not a fair description. First, I wouldn't describe Mogollon as even a town. It's very small. Second, there are a few inhabitants so the main street is quite a cozy thoroughfare. I can imagine sitting in a chair for hours in this canyon setting. There's a museum, an inn, an eclectic store selling a mix of t-shirts, art, geodes, etc., and there's The Purple Onion. All may be closed depending on the day and the season. Fortunately, The Purple Onion was open. It seems to be known for its lunch fare of burgers and such but I settled for a breakfast of scrambled eggs, toast, hash browns, coffee, and a milkshake. The food was okay but the coffee and milkshake were both very good. If you're on the main highway and you see the sign pointing to Mogollon, take it. Even if the businesses are closed that day, the drive there and back is worth it. If The Purple Onion is open, get a milkshake. You won't be disappointed.

Her expectations (and ours) were not very high as it is hard to find truly good dining in Catron County. Boy were we wrong! The place has a great vibe with fun decor, plenty of seating, pool tables, etc. We were warmly welcomed by our server, who turned out to be one of the owners. She had an impressive knowledge of their products and shared a bit of history as well. Prod-O proudly offers craft brews and spirits from New Mexico, including their own brews and whiskey. We tried the Prad-O brews, Elfego and Eagle Peak. Both got a thumbs-up from our party. Unfortunately, we did not get to taste their in-house whiskey as it sells out faster than they can distill it. Guess that means another visit! The food did not disappoint as we enjoyed the quesadillas, pretzel with beer cheese, breadsticks, and salad, all freshly made in the kitchen by Jody, who also makes a KILLER salsa! The menu card we were handed showed a cheese pizza at $17.99, with green pepper, mushrooms, black olives and onions at $1.00 each and pepperoni at $1.75. The menu was removed after we placed our order. According to those prices, the pizza should have been: Cheese pizza: $17.99 Green pepper: $1.00 Mushrooms: $1.00 Pepperoni: $1.75 Black olives: $1.00 Onions: $1.00 Total: $23.74 Our receipt shows the pizza at $27.99. It also shows the toppings at higher prices -- $1.50 each for green pepper, mushrooms, black olives and caramelized onions, and $2.00 for pepperoni. When we got home I checked their website, and its menu matched the prices on the menu we had been given. I've attached a screenshot of that menu along with our receipt. The crust was also soft, limp, grey and very floppy. The toppings themselves were good, but the foundation of the pizza was a letdown. The owner stopped at our table and chatted with us. We mentioned the crust, although we didn't really understand his explanation. He also offered us a sample of a porter-style beer, which was very good. The service was very good as well. With relatively few dinner choices in Alpine, I would simply recommend checking the menu prices against your bill carefully before paying.
