I am looking to buy a car for my daughter and my brother in law continues to rave about "CarMax". I have purchased my last five vehicles brand new from the dealerships. Since I was looking for a used car, I thought I would give it a try. Horrible service. I walked in the front door with my newborn; I wasn't greeted by anyone, although there were several male associates standing around. I continued to the parking lot to view the inventory. Pushing a stroller, I viewed the ENTIRE INVENTORY BY MYSELF! And to clarify, that was the entire front and back parking lot. Not once was I approached or asked if I needed help. There were a few cars that could have been a potential fit; however, I will never shop there again, let alone recommend it to anyone and I will tell my brother in law that he stands corrected. Jessica is the worst customer service representative. I arrived a little late due to an unforeseen accident on the freeway. I had been waiting for three weeks for my scheduled appointment for an oil change. When I arrived late(mind you I got there at 820am and had to wait for her to be done with previous person) she stated well since it's more than 15 minutes past your appointment you have to reschedule. She had no empathy for the fact that it was due to an accident and how long I had been waiting for my appointment. In the moment of frustration I walked out. I stayed in my car for about 5 minutes and then walked back in and ask for someone else to assist me. She rolled her eyes and said it would be Heather who was on the phone with another customer. Heather was able to get me in later on at 3pm. When I arrived this time 20 minutes early to my appointment I am greeted agian with an eye roll and the most insincere "Hello, I'll be right with you" from Jessica. She proceeded to draw up my paperwork and told me the job would cost $83 without even checking if it was the correct customer. So I ask did the price go up for an oil change? She said rudely "you're here for diagnostic check engine light right?" And I said to her no I'm here for an oil change. So the whole time she redraw my paperwork she did not have the nicest demeanor. She then proceeded to answer the phone and throw it in the counter while finishing up with me. Then while I sat and waited for my car to be done Jessica said inappropriate conversation to be had in a public area where customer can hear EVERY WORD YOU SAY! On July 16th, I put in for a transfer for a vehicle in Sacramento, CA I believe. The vehicle was then brought to the Reno location on July 19th when it was then supposed to go through the inspection process. On July 24th, I had gone to the Reno location and asked about the progress on the vehicle. I was informed that it was almost done with the inspection process and I should be hearing from someone with a couple days. On July 30th, I called again to find out the status on the vehicle and they didn't have an update on the vehicle. So I gave it a few more days and called again on the August 3rd, only to find out that it supposedly had a cracked windshield, and they had to wait for the replacement which would be the end of the following week. I called yet again on August 12th to find out again what the status was on the vehicle. The lady I spoke to informed me that the vehicle was ready, so I asked even after the store saying the windshield needed to be replaced. She then called the Reno store to find out the status in which the store said everything was good and I could come down to the store. Fast forward I get the vehicle, and it wasn't showing any signs of a problem. On August 15th, I went to run to the store to get a few things and guess what the check engine light came on, and wouldn't go over 25mph. This has literally been the worst buying experience ever for getting a vehicle. read more

I purchased a car from here and let's just say it has not been my best car buying experience. I bought a BMW with only 30K miles on it and within only three months of driving the car it began to fall apart. First the headlamp washers stopped working and then the cover fell off leaving me with a hole in my bumper. The mechanical issues started shortly thereafter. When I took my car in to my mechanic, he found multiple issues. It was misfiring on three cylinders, had timing adjustment issues, a huge oil leak, bolts were missing and loose under the hood and the harness was zip tied. I feel that for the low mileage, all these problems are unacceptable and my mechanic told me the car is lemon. I passed this on to carmax and they fixed it free of charge after we were very firm about not paying a dime. However, I what I really wanted was to just turn the car in, and they said my only option was to have it appraised and see what the sales manager would offer me for it. Of course it appraised for $5k less than I owe and they aren't willing to budge. Even after my mechanic said it's a lemon. All in all I'm disappointed I was sold a car like this with all these problems. I appreciate them fixing it for me, but how long until something else goes wrong? It's too new to have these issues. My first time working with Carmax was filled with mixed feelings. The salesperson, Rich, was BEYOND helpful and absolutely amazing! Never felt pressured and he was just easy to get along with. The whole process of going through the application was easy peasy, since I got pre-approved online. The pictures that were shown for the car I wanted stayed up to par, for the most part. They didn't show show every single ding and scratch, but they were all small ones. The one thing that I did not like with my whole experience was the cleanliness of the vehicle. After taking the car off the lot and inspecting it a lot closer, I slowly started to realize how dirty the car actually was. They were stains on the visor and sunroof cover, as well as blatant dirt on the ground. It wasn't thoroughly cleaned. I can tell this because I found a bottle cap between the seats in the back and the center console had a sticky spill in it. I am not asking for tip to toe spotless and ammaculant, but at least somewhat of an effort, especially with Covid. read more

Made an appointment and Came in around 3-3:30 and not one employee came up to us, we had to hunt one down, by the time we found him we had already found the car we wanted to test drive/possibly buy.. They told us we needed to go inside n sign up n wait. There were at Least 20 Carmax employees were STANDING around talking amongst each other and not one could do a test drive. The woman "Myriam" was extremely sweet when she helped us find our car. Loved her attitude and energy. On the other hand.. with the CAR, CarMax sold us a car with a dead key battery and bad car battery. The spare key fob doesn't even work. My current key fob always has a notification popping up "change key battery" I bought my car in June 2020.. it's August 2020, my car has died on me a total number of FOUR TIMES. I had to call roadside assistance 3 times, the fourth time was yesterday and somebody had to come jump my car because all of a sudden my road side assistance coverage has changed out of no where. I don't understand what's wrong with my battery. Car had under 44K miles when I bought it. Looked like it was in mint condition. This was, by far, the easiest and least pressured car buying experience I have ever had. I test drove a similar vehicle nearby then shopped for the model and features I wanted on CarMax. I was contacted within half an hour of my request on line. I received emails on the progress of my car being shipped. When it arrived, I was invited to come test drive and either change my mind or proceed with the purchase. Test drive and all, we were only at the dealer about an hour. I would definitely recommend Car Max for your next car purchase especially if you have a specific make and model in mind. read more

I had an Audi that was no longer needed. Instead of Craigslist or eBay, I went to Carmax and they gave me a bit more than the price I was expecting. They were very professional and I thought their assessment of the weaknesses of my vehicle were all accurate. They were patient and respectful and they did not waste my time. This rating should be a 4.75, but that can't be selected. Joe M. was the associate that I worked with and the whole process was a great experience. There is ZERO pressure to buy a vehicle. First, I found several Ford F150 trucks on the CarMax website from all over the country. It was easy to view all of the options & features and typically 20+ photos of each vehicle. I found the Website to be A+++. The truck I actually purchased was a "one-owner" (like many at CarMax) and was located about 200 miles away in CA. When I decided on the right vehicle for me, Joe made the call/arrangements to have the truck transferred. The typical wait is 7 to 10 days on a transfer from North Cali. It actually to about 2 weeks due to weather delays = no problem. After the truck arrived and got the "dealer prep/wash" completed, we setup a test drive. The test drive went fine - regular streets and an adequate amount of time on the freeway - before returning. Note: You may ask/arrange to have a vehicle checked out at another dealer or with your favorite mechanic. I did not do that because the truck only had 33,000 miles. The rest of the purchase process went perfectly. The "final" doc signing was very professional and all of the various docs were clearly explained as we signed. And finally, my only complaint. After I got the truck home, I crawled underneath to check the spare tire a bit more closely and found that there was quite a bit of old, dry mud in several places on the undercarriage. I didn't expect a "perfect" used vehicle, but a little attention to pressure wash/clean the undercarriage (as I've now done) would get this a 5 star rating. read more

I have used Carmax two times before with pleasant experiences.... but I am going to have to say this was absolutely the worst experience I have ever had. I do not leave reviews, good or bad, but I need this person to be disciplined for her actions. KAITLYN LERA lied to me about my approval for a car I was banking on. I totaled my car a couple weeks ago, a couple came into my lane, it was an accident, everyone is okay. BUT I am with out a car since my insurance does not cover over a certain amount of days. I looked on Carmax and found a car that was around my price range. I gave her ALL my information, she ran my credit and told me "YAY you are approved!" She made it seem like all I needed to do was give them my down payment and sign papers. I ordered my car on Monday the 28th of October, it "shipped" that following Thursday and I didn't hear ANYTHING until yesterday the 5th of November. I had to return my rental car and have been with out a car since Monday. I had not shopped around because she told me I was approved, but if I had known that she lied I would have tried to buy a car else where.... here's the really shitty part.... I get excited, it's the day I get to buy my car. Little did I know it was going to be a terrible night. I had my friend drop me off at the dealership from FALLON, where I live, because why would she stay? Im buying a car, I can drive myself home......... first she doesn't even work that day and has another man take over and second it turns out I cannot get approved because my car still is on my credit as "upside down" not totaled..... and my credit is below average due to unfortunate events in my life. And now I can't get approved.... I need either $2000 down or a trade in! I cannot trade my car in it's totaled and I do not have $2000 laying around! I work two jobs and 70 hours a week just to live in the area and pay all my bills...... I was therefore stranded an hour away from my home in a city I do not know hardly anyone. The gentleman who helped me at the dealership was so apologetic and told me himself he was appalled in her actions just to try and make a "sale".... My daughter bought a Nissan Juke from CarMax, Reno. She also bought the Max Care 150K warranty from them. The car had 92,000 miles on it. It had gone through the CarMax checklist with no problems found. Within three months the car stranded her twice on the freeway. CarMax said it sounded like a CVT transmission problem and referred me to Nissan of Reno. Nissan of Reno found the fluid had never been changed. The fluid in this car needs to be changed every 30,000 miles according to Nissan. There was extensive damage and stress to the transmission. According to Nissan it needed a new transmission. CarMax Max Care covered $1500.00 of a $4100.00 Transmission. I thought CarMax at least checked the transmission level and color. It was obviously worn and burned. How can we trust CarMax repairs for anything if they can't see the obvious? I tried to contact via email CarMax, Reno but have received no response. Too bad. Im going to start this review by saying me and my family have always gotten our cars from carmax and never had a problem, this time was something different. When we went to test drive the car (2018 civic) the battery was dead. I was assured that there wasn't a problem since "someone left the hitch light on" and even if the battery was shot carmax would replace it. The car listing had said the car had 20k miles, our sales representative said "we always round up no matter what" however when I got in the car and checked the odometer the car had 22,700 miles which is more than 2k above what they listed it at. Finally, three weeks after getting the car the battery died, when I tried to call carmax someone asked what the nature of my call was I said I recently bought a car and the battery died, immediately after that they said that they would transfer me to service which never answered the phone. read more

This was a fantastic experience. My husband and I had to get a new car fairly unexpectedly. I tend to be a compulsive over planner, so we went in prequalified and with a very good idea of the car we were looking for. The website was easy to use and up to date with their inventory. We were greeted with a smile by Tim who was extremely low pressure. He asked what we were looking for and pointed us in the right direction. We looked at the specific car we came to see and also browsed the lot on the SUV side to compare other cars. Tim came out to check on us once and answered our questions. He then gave us plenty of time to talk and look by ourselves which we really appreciate. We came in and wanted to test drive a car. We loved the car and he promised he'd have us done in under an hour, and he did. I think we got a great deal. They washed and gassed up the car while we were finishing up paperwork. They even removed the standard car max sticker on the back of the car for me! Overall it was a very stress free and calm process. Everyone was extremely friendly. Visited CarMax on Saturday to view all the makes, models, sizes and features. I zeroed in on a Subaru CrossTrek 2015 and took it for a test drive. The next day my brother came to check out the mechanics, features and handling. He was impressed. We sat down to review financing and that evening I was a new car owner. I would definitely recommend this spot to buy a car at. They offer "No Haggle" prices which most of the time are more expensive than a dealership or somewhere you can actually haggle at, but it really gives you the peace of mind knowing you won't have to argue for a few bucks off your car. I will say the Sales Rep I dealt with was fairly new and not very good with the computer itself. I believe his name was Mike. However, he was super nice all the time, and helped me find my 2012 Chevy Malibu. I only had about 1.5 hours per day to come in and speak with him, so we did the process in increments and it worked out great. I couldn't be happier to have this car. I recommended my roommate to go check them out and they found him a 2012 Ford Fusion that he just loves as well. Excellent spot to go to, they are professional, seem to care, and I haven't had any issues with the car so far (knock on wood), but it appears that the extended Warranty covers quite a bit on it. read more

I went online at Carmax.com I ended up finding the perfect truck and color for myself I knew financing was the route I wanted to take I had the money to put down to lower the finance rate so I picked out the truck I wanted it was in Springland, IL. I paid $849 to have it shipped to Carmax Reno it took two weeks give or take to arrive as promised. Everything was going great until I arrived to test drive it and as I put in the key into the ignition, after already being told it went through two separate inspections, the battery light came on immediately and requested new battery it had a hard time starting, test drove it and found out the alignment was off, balance was off just things that should've been handled before parking the truck, and calling me to arrive to test drive, so I gave them five days to find out what's wrong with the truck, get it fixed so I can finance/purchase and come to find out the truck still hasn't even been touched since I left. I get a call and I am told it's finally gone into the shop I get called three days later because I reached out each time to find out information on the truck and I am told that everything is fixed and I should come in to check it out and re-test drive it so today I arrive everything is going great seems as if things got fixed. I get a call and Am Threatened as to why I came in on Sunday when it was his day off so somebody else could steal the commission and he Eric said that's fine if you want somebody else we need to do it on my time. As I go to make the purchase on the truck come to find out that I was lied too on having a set price for 30 days for finance and $2700 more dollars was due to make it about $9000 total just to have a lower finance rate on a 2013 truck so lied about the rate lied about the truck wasted money wasted three days of my time just to be told all there's nothing we can do I'm sorry that he lied and lied again and lied Again... So due to their negligence and lack of care it went outside of the scope of time and time is money they will not work with you on the price basically told me sorry it's $33,000 and we need $9000 now! Absolute garbage service and the funny thing is they want you to buy into their hundred thousand mile powertrain warranty but if you can't even trust that you're going to get taken care of and it takes 3 days You will always lose- read more

So far my experience has been great. I have an appt. in a couple of weeks for a few things to be fixed on the car and then all should be good. Unfortunately I was not able to inspect/drive the car prior to buying as it was shipped from out of state so a few items needed attention after the car came in. The car is 8 years old with very low miles so of course there are a couple of issues--none serious. My sales person was Rondel and he was a pleasure to work with. Just bought a 2015 chevy equinox with 50k miles on it.. happy with the vehicle and was happy with the customer service of sales consultant Michael H., APR is high though even with a co-signer with excellent credit and a little bit of a down payment. Was not happy with the customer service of a manager named Greg over the phone. A couple days after purchasing the vehicle i noticed a squeeking noise while going over speedbumps. Called and made an appointment for an inspection. Also noticed the tires obviously need a rotation. (Front tires much more bald than back tires). Took it for the inspection and they drove it around the block and it wouldnt make the squeeking noise because there are no speed bumps around the store. But they didnt inspect anything... and they said they checked the tires and they are still up to "carmax standard" so they didnt do a rotation. I watched them walk up to the vehicle, get right in and drive around the block came back parked it and came right back inside without even looking at the tires. How'd they check the tires without looking at them? Getting back home the vehicle of course squeeks as i pull over a speed bump. So now i gotta call again and make another inspection appointment... and probably pay for a tire rotation even though I just purchased the vehicle... not happy with the service center. read more

Don't be fooled by the vast advertising campaign by CarMax. This is quite simply just a huge used car lot. We bought a 2013 Audi A5 ($30,000) from them and within 4 months the auto body putty and cheap paint job, used to make it appear pristine, started to crack and pit. I called my salesman countless times and he and the dealer (all of them very smiley) just kept putting me off. After several months they finally said no to any help with the problem because the car had passed their "rigorous" paint inspection before being sold and so there could not be anything wrong with the paint. What a crock of BS. I should not have trusted them, and neither should you. Buyers beware!!! read more

The price they offered was very reasonable and the Kelly price was higher, so they matched it. I'm very happy with the experience. The only downside was the length of time it took once I decided to sell (an hour or so). Where to begin? Lack of communication just because we like to communicate through email to prevent 20 calls a day from dealerships while searching for a car which cost us a chance at a transfer for a vehicle. The bad attitudes as soon as you have concerns or the "bullying" method when you do ask details about the car and its a concern and they say "well, if you don't want the car". No. Just answer the questions. You make it feel like you're hiding something. How about the #1 issue. We get an outside loan and Carmax tries everything to avoid accepting the loan and after a week of avoiding filling out an online portal from our lender in order to verify they would mail the funds to the right people, Carmax states over the phone that they don't accept electronic funds though we give the name of the rep at the lender and the specific instructions on how Carmax will obtain the funds (a check through 2nd day air from UPS). Their response kept being "we don't accept electronic funds. If you would like, we can do a loan application over the phone or you can have an outside lender." That was our outside lender that Carmax refused payment from. Why didn't they state they didn't deal with that lender when we were there talking about that specific lender a week and a half earlier? I would stay away from Carmax. If they don't want to follow simple requests from an outside lender which puts the money in their pocket then ask yourself, will they put money out to fix their vehicles right? That was our concern and we did not do business with them. I know their response would be that they did do the portal and called the lender but when I followed up with the lender there was no record of Carmax calling and no record that the portal was even looked at to be reviewed let alone completed. Another funny coincidence with them is when you want a vehicle transferred you must pay the transfer fee before the vehicle will be transferred. This makes sense since there is a cost to them. The downfall is they take your credit card info over the phone but when you go through the issues we went through and get a refund they take the credit card info again but then mail you a receipt like you are expected to sign it and return it before they refund the money. Well, why didn't we have to sign that you are taking our money? Seems like they add steps in hopes the consumer doesn't follow through so they can keep the transfer fee. This is a wonderful way to buy a used car. I had spent some time researching subcompacts and had settled on the Honda Fit as the best choice for my needs. I was prepared to buy a new one from Honda, but I wanted a manual transmission, which is tough to find. Before going to a Honda dealer I thought I'd see what CarMax had to offer in 2017 models. Lo and behold! They had a manual with low miles in Reno! I live about 90 minutes away in California and though I was a little concerned about buying a car out of state, I felt uncomfortable about asking them to move it to Roseville Ca when I hadn't even looked at it yet. I called for an appointment and they set me up. Unfortunately, I came down with the flu, and had to cancel. They offered to save the car until I could come, and after a couple of days I felt well enough to drive "over the hill" as we say in our town. From the moment we walked in, the service was outstanding, not in the cloying, won't leave you for a moment till you sign way either. They found the car, let me drive it. Used their vast resources to buy our trade-in at above Blue book, temporarily get out of state registration, and since it was Saturday night, set up financing so we could drive it home, and get our credit union financing on Monday. They explained thoroughly how DMV would work, and made sure we had a complete package to give them when we got back to California. They helped us clean out our trade-in, and even put a big yellow bow on the Fit for us for Facebook share. The staff was efficient, polite, supportive, and professional. They worked around every paperwork and possible glitch as it occurred without once making us feel like they were doing us a favor. This was my second CarMax buying experience, and convinced me even more that it's the best way to buy a car.
