I'm a fan. My family has purchased 4 cars from Carmax and never had problems with any of them. The time came for me to buy a car all by myself and Carmax made my first buying experience pleasant. The no-haggle policy takes the pressure off. If you do your homework online there's no need to worry about getting screwed. Either you like their price or you don't. I love being able to see what's on the various Carmax lots from the comfort of my own home on their website. I found the car I wanted, researched it, ordered a carfax report, made an appointment to test drive it, and walked out with a new car. Lorenzo Williams and his trainee Emilio were knowledgeable without being pushy. I've only had the car for a week but based on past Carmax experiences and this buying experience sans parents, I'm a fan of Carmax (and Lorenzo!). Sold me a 2014 Ford Explorer after showing me a bunk report that reported no accidents. This vehicle had not only one, but two accidents that we found out when we had to get rid of it after only 10 months of ownership due to it leaking carbon monoxide into the cabin and making my family and me sick. Since it's not possible to write a review with no stars at all, I'm offering "one star." I've purchased three automobiles from CarMax in the Past. First, a BMW (Z3), Second, Jaguar (S Type) and finally a Jeep (Wrangler). This was all done in the past few years. Last week I saw a very nice Corvette, and decided it would be my next car. I work out of state and told the "customer service associate" that I'd have a few questions and fly in to buy the car on a specific date. I was promised a call back and I settled in imagining my new car... Well, folks. The call never came. When I called a day later I was on hold for over 20 minutes, finally got transferred around for another ten and finally was connected to this stellar example of customer service. "I have nothing. They didn't give me any answers." This is coming from a woman who's about to get a very hefty commission, to a man who's pretty much ready to purchase a car "sight unseen." PLEASE trust me. STAY away from this place. It's as close to preditory as you can get. There are a lot of very honorable places where you can buy a used car, and they will actually appreciate your business. I had the pleasure of working with Barb Walsh to sell my car at Carmax. While I really liked my 2008 Jetta, I didn't need a car when I moved to Chicago. I wanted to sell it with the least hassle possible. I did my part by making sure my title was clear and I had all the proper documentation with me. Cool. You can see this one from the interstate. A few years ago we used Carmax for our parents, and later for ourselves, to purchase used cars. The experience was fine, no haggle pricing, everything was explained well, and they do a good job with maintenance and repairs. So with all of these positives and the excellent brand recognition, why did I give a two star rating? Well, there are several reasons. I'll try to be brief and hit the highlights. First is the fact that we felt certain things were not disclosed during the sale from a few years ago. At this point (2012) we've already bought and sold a couple of cars, and for one of them we pulled the history report and saw there was an accident listed. Strange because we went back to compare with our original paperwork provided by Carmax and did not see the same accident (the date was before Carmax obtained the used vehicle). Carmax does not use CarFAX they have a relationship with Experian to produce history reports from AutoCheck. Fine, so we thought we would pay to have the same report and saw the accident. I don't understand why this would not be disclosed at the time of sale, yet appear years later when we ourselves try to sell it. That hurts our resale efforts, and it felt like Carmax was somehow able to delay or hide the accident info on their own reports. Now my policy is to never take printed reports from dealership, we will pay to pull the same report online and confirm the information is accurate. Next, we tried to take advantage of the Carmax appraisal as we were getting ready to pick a price and list a previous car for sale. The process was straightforward and easy to understand. But the results were mixed and frustrating. I would not recommend wasting your time with the appraisal because if you think about it, the dollar amount they show you will always be low enough for them to make a profit when they turn around and sell the same car themselves or at auction. It was not a good deal for us to resell, nor was it a good deal for us to pay down the remainder of our car loan (also with Carmax Finance). Oh well. We sold that car for full price at a private sale. Your mileage may vary because I'm sure everyone has a different situation. read more

2 weekends in a row, I have been here helping my mom and my husband go car shopping. For personal preference, we never buy brand new cars. There's no point since they deprecated about 20% the minute you drive it off the lot. Here ar Carmax, you can get a good used car for a good and reasonable price. My family members ended up choosing a 2013 Hyundai Sonata and 2014 Honda Accord. Both great cars, low mileage and safe. Great sales consultants. We worked with two guys named Kevin and Bill! Awesome people, friendly and honest, down to earth guys. I loved that they didn't push and shove things we didn't want to purchase on top of the cars. They were both thorough and knowledgeable. Both super patient as each of my family members test drove 2 cars each. Make sure to DO YOUR RESEARCH FIRST before you come here. It will take forever so as long as you come in the store with a game plan, it will be smooth sailing. The finance portion takes a little while so make sure you have no plans for the day. And at the end, they thoroughly clean and detail the car, make sure you leave with a full tank of gas...Oh and they put a big bright yellow bow on the top of the hood of the car for pictures (but you don't get to keep it...boo). Definitely my #1 choice and recommendation to anyone who's looking for a used car. read more

My sister purchased a 2010 Chevrolet HHR in September 2010 and she never had any problems until yesterday, when she couldn't turn the ignition off and remove the key. It's after service hours at Carmax, but you can see a few of the guy's still in the service area getting ready to go home after finishing their shifts. There is an Angel in every cloud just waiting to service you, to go above and beyond the call of duty. Ryan in the service dept at Carmax was my Angel. Ryan made sure I had a loaner car, I had been shopping , transfer all of my shopping items to the loaner car, (smiled all while he was doing this ) filled out the paper work for my car repair, explained repair procedures and assure me everything would be alright.( I must mention it was raining) He could have easy told me to come back tomorrow, THAT SOME KINDA CUSTOMER SERVICE AND I'M"M LOVING IT. I don't make a habit of writing reviews. I have to feel VERY strongly about something before I do. In fact, this will only be my third review ever, but I need to share the super positive experience I had at the Hillside CarMax. Two things to preface: (1) I LOATHE car shopping, and (2) when I walked into CarMax I had just left a place that for now shall remain unnamed (but I may just still be mad enough to write a bad review - stay tuned!), and I was angry. I had barely started and was already ready to throw in the towel and just go home. I went to said place, test drove the car I've been salivating over for six months, fell in love with it, and then they offered me *4000 dollars* LESS than Kelley Blue Book value for my current car (a Hyundai Accent, just in case it's at all pertinent or interesting to the story). The car was in excellent condition. It was a 2010 and only had 16,000 miles on it. For those of you who don't do math, that's less than 4,000 miles a year. This particular dealer told me that BECAUSE of the low mileage, they wouldn't be able to sell it, so they could only give me that (ridiculously) low price. I didn't even stay for clarification on that completely inane statement. I was angry; I was upset, and I left. To make matters worse, I had dragged out my husband, two toddlers, and a surely teenager IN THE SNOW. My husband talked me into at least stopping at CarMax to see what they'd give me for it. They offered over what KBB said I should expect. Only about $150.00 over, but still! I almost took the cash and combined it with our sizable down payment (it's tax return time, yanno!) and went back to the place that pissed me off to make them an offer. Then I decided I'd rather put a rabid porcupine in my bra than give them a red cent of my money. We looked around the lot, but there was nothing that would fit our family of five just right. They were patient with me and let me look at a lot of stuff. What I wanted, what I had driven at the other place, was a Mazda 5 Sport. They didn't have any on their lot, so they looked in surrounding areas. One. In Schaumburg, and $6,000.00 over what we had planned on paying. The objective was to pay cash and go, because while my credit is fair, it's not stellar, and my husband's isn't good at all (hey, you try dying while completely uninsured; that's not a cheap endeavor). We told them there was no way we could get a decent loan so that was completely off the table. The sales person told us that it wouldn't hurt to just let him run it once. Truth in that. They had already treated me a thousand times better than Hertz (and there it is!). He ran the credit and worked some kind of super magic. I swear he did, because he got us a loan for 3.2 (!!!!! I still don't know how that happened!), and our payments are now 35 dollars less than they were on the Hyundai. Instead of being a hardship, it turned out to be an advantage. We were stoked! We didn't even have to deliberate. I needed a car big enough to haul around my babies and their copious amount of crap, and this was the car I'd been eyeing for six months. So Jaime got us a far better car than the one I was originally looking at. It has almost 30,000 less miles. It's immaculate inside. And the actual vehicle is better - I'd been looking at Mazda 5 Sports, because I was certain I'd never be able to afford the better/more luxurious Touring, but that's exactly what he got us. AND one last thing, I mentioned that the car was in Schaumburg, right? I figured we'd have to wait a couple of days for them to transfer it, but HE DROVE OVER THERE AND BROUGHT IT BACK. We took the kids to lunch and shopping at Target, and by the time we were finished, there was my new car. They also do all the work. They pay off your existing loan if there is one. They transfer the tags. They figure tax and titles into the final, financed price. They offered (and we accepted) a six year warranty. It was painless. It was absolutely wonderful, and I can't even say enough good things. Our sales associate was Jaime. He was pretty new, and we were his first actual sale. He did a bang up job. If he didn't know the answer to something, he went and found out. He spent a lot of time. He answered a lot of questions. He seemed to genuinely care, and he was very patient. Thank you Jaime. Thank you CarMax. I'll never go anywhere else again. And on my agenda for next weekend is to drive over to the Hertz in my gorgeous new car and thumb my nose at them. I was not happy with my experience at this Carmax location. I took my 2011 Jaguar XF recently and they really low balled me on the buyout offer. They knew I was trading it in for a Tesla, not sure if that played a role in their offer. Another dealer offered me $5K more. I didn't take that either and ended up selling it for $7K more than what Carmax offered me. This left a bad taste in my mouth. Be careful and don't feel pressured into taking their offer. read more

The no haggle experience will cost you thousands of dollars in the long run! In 2013 my wife and I needed a new car and they offered us an outrageous APR. The downfall of the no haggle experience is the sales people will not fight for you to get a lower APR. What you see is what you get. I have been to two different car dealers within the last month and both of those car dealerships will negotiate with you and fight for you to get the best price and monthly payment possible! If you are good at negotiating and willing to talk to a car dealership, stay away from Carmax because the no haggle experience could cost you thousands in the long run! read more

I was in and out in less than 2 1/2 hours. The App was super easy to identify which vehicles were available and that I might consider. They would have transferred vehicles if I was interested. The loan rates were a little higher than the dealer...but overall I think I got a pretty good deal. If I knew what I wanted and invested a ton of time shopping...I could have probably found a better deal. I also traded in my vehicle and I thought they gave me a good price. Molly was my sales rep and was super helpful. The place is a little dingy...they probably should repaint. But other than that...this was a good place to purchase from. read more

I'm rating Carmax based on my experience trying to sell them my car. I had a very nice 2006 Scion tC, fairly low milage, but, with a scuff on the bumper and a few door dings. Other than the dings, the car was mint. I still owed money on it and wanted to see what Carmax would offer me because I figured it would be the easiest, most painless way to sell my car because they would pay off the rest of the loan and cut me a check for the remaining amount. I made an appointment and when I got there I was happy to see that the place was bustling and everything seems to run like a well oiled machine. The staff was friendly, everything was nice, that is until they gave me the quote. Now, Kelley Blue Book dealer trade in value was $10,125. I was expecting a number around 10k and I was willing to take that hit even though the KBB value for private party sale was $12,000, just for the sake of convenience. Well, they offered me $8,000. That's robbery! Apparently, they only offer you what they would pay at an auction (like the car had say, been repossessed) and most of the cars they sell were acquired at an auction. Forget it. I decided to go through the hassle of selling it myself in this sickened economy. And two months later, I sold it for $11,000. I think that little bit of extra hassle on my end was worth the extra $3,000. I'm sure it's a pretty decent place to buy a used car, but, unless you are willing to be robbed, do not try to sell your car to them. read more

My husband sold his car at this Carmax a few years ago, and we returned today to see what they'd give us for mine after having gotten a really laughable offer from a nearby Lexus dealer. We were quickly greeted when we walked in--there were a lot of salespeople standing around so they are clearly well-staffed--and were told it'd be about 35 min. to have our car evaluated. The woman we worked with was really friendly and pretty much told it like it was--explained how they evaluated the vehicle, etc. While they did the evaluation, we browsed the lot. They had a pretty decent selection, although we weren't looking to buy. The evaluation was quicker than we expected and they gave us a pretty fair offering price--it was within the Kelly Blue Book value that we found online. We didn't sell the car, though, since we're not sure exactly what we're doing yet, but we're definitely keeping this option in mind. What I appreciated most was that they totally stick to their motto--no hassle, no haggling, "it is what it is" kind of mentality. read more

CarMax has some great features that other dealerships do not have that make buying a used car very easy: - A comprehensive website that lists all cars in their database, along with lots of pictures (in most cases over 20 per car), location, pricing, history, and features. So you can shop from the comfort of your home! - A service that allows you to transfer any used car within 100 miles of your local CarMax for free and with no obligation if you decide you don't like the car. (My perfect car ended up being in the next state, but no problem, they transferred it to Hillside for free!) - After you select the car you want to purchase, the salesperson takes you on a walk-through of the various features of the car. This includes things like the keyless entry, headlights, windshield wipers, turn signals, stereo, coolant reservoir, oil dipstick, etc.. This service serves two purposes: 1) To make sure that everything is functioning and 2) To teach you have to use the various features on your new vehicle and where they are located. So even after they make the sale, the customer service doesn't turn off like at other places. They really seem to want to make sure you leave happy! - CarMax gives you many flexible financing options, from CarMax themselves as well as many major banks. The application process was quick and simple, and we got to choose from a few different banks and several loan terms. Another bank ended up offering a cheaper rate, saving us money. - Appraisals are fast and easy. CarMax doesn't care if you buy a car from them or elsewhere... it doesn't affect your appraisal value at all. The best part is that the appraisal is good for 7 days, so you have time to shop around. And I was actually offered more for my car here than at other dealerships in the area ($2000 versus $1700). I'd never shopped at a CarMax before and found the experience very refreshing. Everyone there was incredibly friendly and helpful! My salesperson was Mark G., and I am a "high-maintenance" person for sure, but he bore it with perfect grace and patience. His help in finding the ideal car for me was much appreciated! Mark showed me many different vehicles in the generic "sedan" category that I was looking in, let me test drive a few, but nothing in the lot both sparked my fancy and left my bank account happy. I was, however, able to find something on the website, at a CarMax in Kenosha. It took them only two days to transfer the car to Hillside for me, and it turned out to be "juuuuust right"! The walk-through on the car was really nice, as I was switching from a German car to an American one and wasn't familiar with where all the controls were or what they did. Most other places just dump you into the car and let you figure it out on your own (for example, when I bought my last car, I didn't even know it had heated seats until, on the way home, we started fiddling with some knobs on the dashboard!), so this service made me feel like an appreciated customer. My only complaint is that, due to paperwork errors and computer/printer issues, it took forever to get the paperwork signed and get the keys in hand.... about 2-1/2 hours. But everyone I was working with was very patient and friendly throughout the entire process, even though I probably was not. Time will tell how well the car holds up, but for the time being, I'm definitely a fan! Update: It's been almost a year, and absolutely nothing has gone wrong with the car. I get compliments all the time on how smooth the ride is! Absolutely, 100% satisfied and will definitely come back. read more

I didn't really care how much they gave me, I just needed to get rid of the car; so it was somewhat annoying that they repeatedly attempted to sell me hard on the incredibly-amazingly-awesomely fair offer they were going to give me. I think the salesman said 'fair value' about 250 times in the 30 minutes we were there waiting to have the vehicle appraised. Everything else went smoothly though. The car was KBB value approx. $3000, but needed a $1500 repair; Carmax gave us $1700 for it so I left happy. read more

Don't go here. I bought a car here a year ago and after a month of having it I found out the car did not have A/C (this was a 2010) and in the contract it stated that it did. After going back and fourth saying that I just wanted my money back. Which they didn't want to give me. I finally told them i would get a lawyer and we would settle it in court. After "they talked to the managers" they ended up giving me back only the down payment that I had made for the vehicle. When I signed the papers they had stated the reason I was returning the car was "because I didn't like it" which was not the reason at all...so much for your "Carmax quality check" I did not even get to talk to a manager because he was always at a meeting. I was actually a pretty big fan (first time carmax-er here; and while a lot of people told me they are fans of SELLING to CarMax, they said to be weary of buying... but I did it anyway because I liked the sales guy (he wasn't pushy) and they said they would hold the car I liked for a week while I looked around and made up my mind) then as I was driving off the lot the "check engine/needs oil change" light came on as well as the "batteries in the keys need to be replaced" light. ANNOYING. Especially after the sales guy told me "I just went through the entire checklist of everything they did to the car to get it ready and it's had everything replaced and cleaned, etc." Blah blah... BS. So I turn around and ask them to quickly do what they need to do and he tells me that all the service center guys are "gone for the day and can I just come back after making an appointment and they will do it then... " haha a.) I like in the city so it's not as easy to pop on over and b.) ANNOYING. And c.) you just SAID it was all done. WTF. So I don't let it get to me and I say "ok" and leave. I call the next day to make my appointment and they give me some long sob story about how I have to actually go to another place to get it changed, they will then reimburse me.... WHAT THE ACTUAL F*CK people. It's laughable. Not the end of the world but get yourself together CarMax. I just hope this is not the first of many issues with them... maybe I should start taking the advice from my friends.. hmm.. Good luck out there! read more

First let me start by saying if I could rate a zero star or negative star I would but you can not so I picked 1 star only because I had to rate it some how. Stopped in one night to get feel for a GMC Terrain. had to wait a good 30 minutes for a salesperson to even show me the car. Not sure if this was his first day on the job but he certainly had no clue on how to sell a car. Wanted to test drive a specific car as we were comparing it to another car on a dealers lot. got in and it was missing a button on the dah board. I believe it was the auto lock button. He proceed to tell me it was nothing and that is the way the car was built. what he failed to realize is that while waiting those 30 minutes we walked around the lot and looked inside a lot of cars. there was another GMC Terrain right next door and that button was not missing. same year, make and model. So he proceed to lie to us 2 minutes into the sale. As we pulled out of the lot we were trying to get air in the vehicle it was pretty hot. as you may know it is CarMax's policy that they need to drive the car out of the lot. not a problem gave me time to figure out the air. Well once again the sales guy told me another lie...it just needs time to cool down. Not sure if he has been in a car in the 21st century but you can tell pretty quick that there is something wrong with the air or not. It took about 5 minutes of him trying to tell us that the air would be on soon when we realized he never pushed the A/C button or the recert fan. He was just blowing hot air in more ways than one. because it was getting close to their closing time he only let us drive around the block. to me that was ridicules.....after all we were there in plenty of time to get what we needed done. So after a short test drive they made up our minds and we went back to the dealer down the road and bought from them. The same dealer who stayed open for us 2 days in a row once past 10 and the other day until 11 when we signed the papers. Suggest going to Haggerty GMC in Villa Park as they were a pleasure to deal with. brought my car in for a free estimate on what they would pay. it went okay but I seriously think they undervalue your appraisal. I think if you have the ability you would be better off trying to sell the car on your own or use as a trade in with a dealer. Overall both transaction were a HORRIBLE EXPEREINCE!! I had my vehicle transferred to the Hillside location and although originally the car was removed from the listing, it eventually became available and ready to ship. My sales person, Molly was on top of it and had it sent right away. It was the quickest car purchase I have made in a long time, I test drove the car, checked it out and began paper work. Probably took about 2.5 hours to complete. I would say if you can refinance with your bank or another lender, interest rates are a little to high especially if you have good credit. read more

I just bought a 2009 Chevy HHR from them 3 days ago and I am so in love with it! I would give them more stars if I could!! My sales guy Mike was really nice and he went above and beyond for me. I think I test drove and looked at more cars than anyone! He was really nice and knowledgeable and he worked with me for about 5 hours. I am normally not a high maintenance person but the last car I got was such a horrible experience for me. I think I am still a little shell shocked form it! I have no idea how to haggle and how to buy a car. THIS is why I love carmax. I even was showed a history/carfax on the car. I thought that was pretty amazing. The Finance manager Maurice was also pretty amazing and patient with me and he worked hard to get me into a car I not only loved, but could also afford! They really took the time to explain things to me in detail. And in ways that didn't make me feel dumb. I kept everyone there pretty late on a Friday night. And everyone was not pissy and trying to hurry along. They seemed happy to help me. I teared up as I pulled away. Of course it would have been nice to get more for my trade in but it was worth it not to have to haggle and stress out over it. I will never ever look elsewhere for a used car! The only reason this location scores a little lower than others is it's right off the highway. A little dirty, a little noisy, but still all the great benefits of Carmax. Yes, they are a little pricey, but there are many reasons they are worth it. 1) Car quality. Anything on the lot is clean, good condition, and runs like a champ. 2) Honesty. I forgot how crooked other dealers are until recently. With Carmax, they are up front with everything. What they will pay for your car, what you pay for theirs, etc. They will even pay the same for your car whether you buy one or not! 3) Maxcare! We love this option. If you buy a qualifying vehicle, get it. I have already had a $500 repair covered and fixed for $50. And that was the first mechanical repair outside of routine maintenance and body work my car has needed since we got it in 2013. read more
